    Abstract [en]

This thesis discusses the subject knowledge of university librarians, gained through education and/or experience in the field. The aim was to investigate the subject knowledge for university librarians, how the existence of subject knowledge or the lack thereof affects the librarians’ work and how the users’ view on the librarians' subject knowledge. I also wanted to investigate if there were differences between librarians at the interdisciplinary libraries and special librarians and whether there were differences between disciplines. This thesis is based on professional theory and librarian occupation as a profession or semi-profession. Additionally I explored what previous studies (mostly American) had said about the subject knowledge of university libraries, both general and divided into different disciplines. For this study I used online questionnaires to 274 librarians, library assistants and other staff of university libraries and 169 users. The questionnaire for the libraries was sent out to contacts at selected libraries, which in their turn asked the staff at these libraries to participate. For user survey I asked users in the libraries personally to participate and then sent out email to them. The responses were analysed mainly on the basis of computer generated results in the web tool and these results was published in the form of tables and diagrams in the study. The results of this survey was mainly that the portion of librarians with subject background was quite low, particularly in terms of subject specific degree, and that experience was relatively high. They are also differences between librarians on interdisciplinary libraries and librarians on subject specialized libraries, mainly that the proportion of completed degree in library science is higher for the subject librarians and the proportion who think that subject knowledge is important is lower in the same group. There are also differences between different disciplines, mainly in the terms of degree, both in library science and other topics, experience, and if the subject knowledge is important in the field. Based on these findings I could conclude that the librarian occupation is a semi-profession rather than a profession. The main conclusions was that librarians think that subject knowledge is important but that this is not seen to the same extent in their education or training although that it partially counterbalanced by experience. Its users find the librarians' subject knowledge partly is quite poor but that they nonetheless receive sufficient help. There are according to me possible methods to raise the subject knowledge of university librarians, mainly by trying to associate librarians with appropriate education to subject libraries and to create a specialisation on university librarianship.

Plattformsbaserad webbanalys: -En analys av besökarstatistik hos Flygresor.se2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Intertextualiteten i nyhetsmedierna: En fallstudie om hur medietexters samspel påverkar framställningen av Polisens omorganisation i nyhetsmedierna2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate, from a dialogical perspective, what messages are conveyed about the Swedish Police Agency's reorganization in the big city press for a limited period in the autumn of 2016. Dialogical analysis provides a tool to not only investigate each text individually, but also to examine the internal relationships between the texts in our selection. The study answers the following questions: What image of the Police Agency's reorganization is conveyed in the media? How does the message about the reorganization of the police agency change by the interplay of the media texts?

The result shows that different messages emerge depending on how the reorganization is put into context when different actors' voices and different content topics are highlighted. The results also shows several examples of intertextual relationships between the different texts. Intertextual relationships are shaped when a text uses information or quotes from other texts and puts it into a new context. This study shows how information from a significant news article about the Swedish Police Agency’s effectivity is re-used in other articles and how this leads to a shift of message.

The method used is dialogical analysis and partly also a discursive perspective. This study, which emerges from a social constructivist perspective, contributes to the understanding of how media texts interact and the effect this have for the reader(s).

Läsfrämjande insatser för socialt utsatta barn: Ett foucauldianskt perspektiv2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master’s thesis focuses on educational discourse as it appears in texts about reading promotion interventions directed towards children in public care and children in families with long-term financial assistance. Three case studies of interventions are presented: Skolfam, Paired Reading and Letterbox Club Sweden. The aim of the thesis is to investigate how the interventions are related to the Foucauldian concepts of governmentality, pastoral power, normalization and technologies of the self. The method used is based on the ideas and concepts of Michel Foucault, who deals with the different modes by which we as human beings perform our subjectivity in relation to discourses and institutions. The case studies analyse how reading and math activities are directed towards socially vulnerable children for the prevention of adverse outcomes and social exclusion in adulthood. The relationship between social problems and literacy are of central importance to the analysis.

The results of the analysis reveal that the interventions are linked to liberal governmentality. The reading promotion activities are expected to change the children’s reading behavior and attitudes toward education. It is hoped that the interventions will achieve a self-regulating capacity among the children, in order to make them improve their school achievements. The underlying ambition is to form and shape subjects to become independent, democratic citizens who are capable of maintaining a life without long-termed social assistance.  The interventions are especially focused on supporting the foster parents to best meet the needs of the children in accordance with liberal governmentality.

This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Popularity of Brand Posts on Sina Weibo: A Correlation Analysis of the Influential Factors on Tuborg’s Brand Community2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Social media continues to serve as vehicles for fostering relationships with customers. One specific way to implement this is to create and operate brand fan communities on social networking sites. Brands can place posts (including videos, messages, quizzes, information, and other material) in these brand communities. By customer’s reposting or commenting on the posts, it subsequently reflects the brand post popularity. In order to investigate the possible drivers for brand post popularity in the Chinese social media context, this thesis selects Tuborg’s Green Fest as the case, its official account on Weibo as the platform, and analyzes the correlation between six driven factors and brand post popularity pairwise.

Results show that interactivity is the most important factor for popularity; a higher level of interactivity would help boost popularity. Followed by entertaining content and vividness are also two factors that positively related to brand post popularity. Moreover, the post theme of Fans interaction is most popular with fans, while the theme of Green Fest information would have negative impact on post popularity. Nevertheless, informational content is not welcome by the fans either, which may have a negative influence on popularity. Managers of brands that operate brand fan communities can be guided by this research with regards to deciding which characteristics or content to place in their brand posts.

Understanding Chinese Student Social Networking: Interpersonal Communication at Renren.com2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With the development of technology, the Chinese Internet enters into a socialization phase- Web 2.0 ages. In this phase, the Internet realizes socialization and individuation, and makes the individuals become the main role in the Internet. Now, Social Networking Service (SNS) is a new Internet service mode in Web 2.0 times, and it bridges the virtual network and real individuals, and also becomes a new popular vehicle to interpersonal communication. Social media is extending the communication scope of human beings and SNS connects people in different places together and it realizes the real interpersonal communication in the Internet to some degree. People can establish certain relationship with others in social network platform.

In China, SNS sites are divided into many types and focus on different social groups. Among them, the development of student SNS is most fast. Now, numerous Chinese students use student SNS to communicate with others, and this thesis aims to explore the characteristics of the interpersonal communication at student SNS site. The thesis takes Renren.com as the study objective to explore. The study is mainly based on quantitative method and the primary data is collected by online questionnaire. Based on the data and the perspective of Peng (2001), I conclude five characteristics of the interpersonal communication in this SNS. They are, (1) the trust is establishing, (2) the development of communication scope is not evident, (3) the role of the communication objectives is relative single, (4) the weak instrumentality, (5) the high frequency of interaction.

Besides analyzing the characteristics of the interpersonal communication in this site, I also discuss the general impact of student SNS on the interpersonal communication among Chinese students. In addition, I also come up with my personal view about the student SNS. Specifically, the traditional online community only shortens the information distance among individuals, but the effect on shortening the mental distance is less. The student SNS transforms the communication among individuals to a real and sincere condition, and it not only shortens the information distance among individuals, but also shortens the mind gap among individuals. Second, in student SNS, because individuals use real names, and most of the followers are acquaintances, individuals can get more self-consciousness through true feedback. Third, student SNS may be a new platform of public sphere and it enables the users to go there and back between the personal space and public sphere.

Communicating in the Diverse German Workplace: An Empirical Study of Intercultural Competence from German and Foreign Employees’ Perspectives2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Since today’s workplace is becoming more and more culturally diverse, personnel intercultural communication competence (ICC) has grown in great importance in many organizations. In spite of its significance, little empirical research on intercultural competence in the real workplace has been conducted. The study examines perspectives of German and foreign employees on intercultural competence according to personal experiences in the culturally diverse workplace in Germany. Views on general aspects of intercultural competence from the two groups are compared. The results show different views between host-cultural and foreign employees on ICC aspects and the competence that is seen relatively crucial in collective views.

The Political Economy of Provincial TV Stations in China2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

My master thesis aims to examine how a Chinese political economy context has shaped the media landscape in China, especially in the domain of provincial television. The key issues are: 1) what the role of private profit accumulation is for provincial TV stations in China; 2) Whom the ownership of provincial TV stations in China belongs to; 3) how global capitalism influence provincial TV stations today; 4) how government regulation influence provincial TV stations today. Theoretically, we follow a political economy framework developed by Wasko (1994), Meehan (2005), and Mosco (2009) and relate western theories to a Chinese social context, by referring to a range of academic works focusing on the Chinese media and a political economy context in China (e.g. Bai, 2005; Zhao, 2008). Based on a case study of Hunan provincial satellite television (Hunan PSTV), the results show that: 1) advertising is the main contributor to the total income of provincial TV stations; 2) provincial TV stations are state-owned according to the party-state’s definition, but they have started to gain some capitalistic characteristics as they are increasingly driven by  audience-rating and advertising revenue; 3) party-state can support the commercialization of provincial TV stations by taking a series of reforms, and at the same time, it can readily suppress the development of provincial TV stations, by issuing legal decrees.

A Comparative Analysis of the New York Times and China Daily’s  2011 News Coverage of the Chinese Government2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyze comparatively the New York Times and China Daily’s 2011 news coverage regarding the portrayal of the Chinese government. The study is positioned in international communication studies. The research employs a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods: content analysis and discourse analysis. 252 news articles from the China Daily and 324 from the New York Times during 01-01-2011 to 31-12-2011 were selected for the content analysis in order to compare the theme of news, news sources, comments on the Chinese government. Furthermore, six news articles on three cases were selected for the discourse analysis to further examine the representation of the Chinese government and the framing types embedded in the news coverage of the two newspapers. The study suggests that although the two newspapers share some similarities regarding the portrayal of the Chinese government, differences can be obviously observed. In particular, the New York Times tends to apply an anti-Chinese government frame while a pro-government frame is common in the China Daily. As a result, the Chinese government is represented as “other” by the New York Times and as “us” by the China Daily.

#NiUnaMenosBolivia fights back: A discourse theoretical analysis on the struggle against gender-based violence in Bolivia2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Femicides are not a new phenomenon. Marches involving thousands of people all around the Latin American continent to fight them, however, is. Ni Una Menos - Not one woman less - is the slogan that also mobilized Bolivians to mass-based protests in November 2016.This thesis investigates the counterpublic of #NiUnaMenosBolivia for the purpose of understanding its discursively articulated identities. A multidisciplinary discourse theoretical analysis combines Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s discourse theory with Nancy Fraser’s contributions to the struggle over needs of counterpublics to examine textual, photographic and ethnographic data. Two levels of identities of #NiUnaMenos are extracted from the investigation: Internal agonistic identities pinpoint at the friction between the representors and the represented identities of the counterpublic. A collective identity evolves in the context of the struggle for justice, freedom and dignity through the construction of an antagonistic “Others” who are held responsible for femicidal violence. This study builds a bridge between feminist activism and academic discourse for feminist studies of the region. It further develops and exemplifies a methodological toolkit for a theoretically based discourse analysis on contemporary women’s movements.

The aura of the artwork in the digitalization age: An experimental study based on Benjamin and Baudrillard2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores how the aura of the artworks changes in the age of digital reproduction through the empirical experiments conducted in Uppsala Konstmuseum. By employing the definition of the aura given by Benjamin in The work of art in the age of the mechanical reproduction and The arcade project, this thesis conceptualizes the “aura” into eight dimensions and then operationalizes the eight dimensions in order to find whether audience’s evaluation of the artwork changes when they are given different stimulus in the control experiment. From the control experiment, the quantitative data will be obtained from a questionnaire and non-participant observation. The qualitative data will be obtained from the interviews. By also applying the simulacra theory of Baudrillard to the analysis part, this thesis finds that there exists a small difference in the perception of the aura between the people who see a digital copy and who see a real painting. The aura still has its power. However, such power is really weak, as many dimensions of the aura have been weakened by the digital simulacra. Through this study, I suggest the museums to take cautious steps to digitalize their artworks though there is no evidence that virtual museums can replace real museums.

Celebrity Humanitarianism in the era of Social Media: An Exploratory Case Study of the UN campaign “The World Needs More...”2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Social Media has become a tool which connects distant people, but what kind of feelings does it connect? What motivates us to feel sympathy for a distant sufferer, for the tragedy of others? Moreover, what kind of discourse in social media can turn our feelings into actions, into donations, into help for those in need?

This study intends, in first instance, to explore whether social media has transformed the essence of humanitarianism. Has cosmopolitanism actually changed through the humanitarian communication of today? Or has it just brought narcissism and locked the audience into a comfortable zone? Within this context, we explore what kind of role do celebrities play when they become part of a humanitarian campaign.

This study explores the case of the United Nations campaign launched in 2013 under the name “The World Needs More______”, which through the use of celebrities such as David Guetta and Beyoncé, intended to build the connection between “how does people feel” about distant sufferers and “what can they actually do” to contribute to the cause.

Through a multimodal critical discourse analysis performed via data collected on Twitter and YouTube, together with a Mediated Discourse Analysis carried out on three videos of the campaign, we conclude that social media has brought a shift in the way of constructing the humanitarian imaginary, not only within a positive or negative frame, rather as an hybrid of both, in which positive and negative representations merge to encourage participation and engagement from the audience, although for the particular campaign under study, the use of celebrities made people act in support of the celebrities and to enhance their own social media personae rather than promoting to solve a humanitarian cause.

Living Between Two Cultures: Intercultural communication of Chinese immigrants in Uppsala2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The research has focused on Chinese immigrants in Uppsala and the purpose of the research is to find out how intercultural communication has influenced the beliefs of Chinese immigrants in Uppsala. The beliefs here refer to ideas about family, education, workplace, and the state with regard to Hofstede et al.’s dimensions of national cultures. The thesis will focus on two dimensions: power distance and masculinity versus femininity. Two main concepts that are used in the thesis are intercultural communication and acculturation. In order to understand these two concepts, different models are introduced in the thesis: Gudykunst & Kim’s (1997) intercultural communication model, John Berry’s (2005) acculturation model, and Hofstede et al.’s acculturation curve. The research has used semi-structured interview as the main methodology and the research has conducted twelve interviews. The research shows that intercultural communication has influenced the beliefs of Chinese immigrants in Uppsala with regard to family, school, workplace, and the state in power distance and masculinity versus femininity. Justifications on beliefs in family, school, workplace, and the state have been displayed in the research.

Participatory Contact Zones And Conflict Transformation: The Participatory Intensities Of The Cyprus Friendship Program2018In: Conjunctions: Transdisciplinary Journal of Cultural Participation, ISSN 2246-3755, Vol. 5, no 1, p. 3-21Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Despite the celebratory approach towards community participation in peace-building, less attention has been placed on the participatory process itself, leaving ambiguous how, and to what degree, power is actually redistributed in these processes. This article aims to address this gap by further developing Torre’s concept of the participatory contact zone. This notion first structures a mapping of Cypriot bi-communal education-related projects (2010-2015) and then supports an in-depth analysis of one project, the Cyprus Friendship Program (CFP). This case study uses Carpentier’s four-level, twelve-step model for participatory analysis to scrutinize the participatory intensity of the CFP’s organizational processes, focusing on the power position of the involved youngsters. It shows that teenagers participate in the CFP at varying degrees: While their power position on a more structural level is limited, there are three areas where these youngsters become more empowered: Co-organization (at lower levels), the teamwork during activities and the development of new initiatives.

Rädda miljön? Klicka här!: En deskriptiv studie om initiering och uppmuntran till slacktivism på Naturskyddsföreningens officiella Facebooksida.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to map out what kind of environmental issues that the environmental organization, Naturskyddsföreningen, present through slacktivist posts on their Facebook page. Furthermore, the study aims to gain an understanding of how Naturskyddsföreningen, in their slacktivist posts, initiate and encourage slacktivism. Our two research questions are: 1) What kind of environmental issues are presented in slacktivist posts on Naturskyddsförening’s Facebook page? 2) How are some environmental issues presented in slacktivist posts?

The first research method used in this study was a quantitative content analysis with the objective to map out what kind of environmental issues that were presented in slacktivist posts. The material for this method consisted of 169 Facebook posts published by Naturskyddsföreningen. A critical discourse analysis was used on 5 slacktivist posts to get somewhat of a clue about how Naturskyddsföreningen present some environmental issues in a slacktivist way. One of the main results shows that the kind of environmental issues that are most frequently presented through slacktivist posts concerns ‘Food & groceries’ and ‘Forest & nature conservation’. The results also show that slacktivist posts was spread by shares and likes to a higher degree than non-slacktivist posts. In light of the study’s first theory, the first level of agenda setting, we can conclude that Naturskyddsföreningen holds the potential to influence the agenda within smaller Facebook networks.

By certain choices of words and formulations Naturskyddsföreningen include other discourses that are built upon current societal values, norms and structures within the slacktivist discourse. These discourses, much like the second level of agenda setting, help frame and individualize the issues and promote the presented solution - slacktivism.

Journalisters syn på källkritik: en jämförelse av två generationer2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Experiences and perceptions of South-South and North-South scientific collaboration of mathematicians, physicists and chemists from five southern African universities2016In: Scientometrics, ISSN 0138-9130, E-ISSN 1588-2861, Vol. 108, no 2, p. 717-743Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Faced with limited resources, scientists from around the world enter into collaborations to join their resources to conduct research. Like everywhere else, international co-publishing in southern African countries is increasingly on the rise. The aim of this study was to document and analyse the level of scientific productivity, collaboration patterns, scientists' experiences and attitudes towards South-South and South-North collaboration. We performed 105 interviews with scientists based at five southern African Universities, namely; University of Malawi-Chancellor College, National University of Science and Technology, the University of Botswana, the University of Zambia, and the University of Zimbabwe. We also traced 192 scientists from the various departments at these universities that had jointly published 623 scientific papers in the field of basic sciences in the period 1995-2014 in Web of Science journals. Our results show that in the majority of the cases funding from the North contributed substantially to increased scientific productivity, and international co-authorship. The results also show that collaboration with southern scientists is equally valued as that with northern scientists, but for different reasons. We conclude that supporting international and national collaboration which includes increased scientific mobility, strong scientific groups and networks, are key factors for capacity building of research in southern African Universities.

”För den intresserade allmänheten”: En undersökning av hur tre specialsamlingar visas upp på Instagram2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this master’s thesis is to examine how social media, specifically Instagram, is utilized in three special collections libraries in Sweden. The intent is to understand why Instagram is a plausible platform for the purpose of showcasing the libraries’ cultural heritage collections, how this is done and who the target audience is. The theoretical framework for this study is based on Roland Barthes’s visual semiotic terms denotation and connotation. The study also applies Lorri Mon’s analytical tools when examining how libraries can use social media in a successful manner.

The three selected libraries are Uppsala University Library, Lund University Library and Roggebiblioteket. Six Instagram posts, between October 2018 and Mars 2019, from each library are analyzed, and e-mail interviews have been conducted with the librarians behind the accounts. Finally, the results are compared to showcase their differences and similarities, but also to compare them to previous studies on social media use in libraries.

The results show that Instagram is used to display the libraries’ cultural heritage and make the collections more approachable to the general public – specifically to foreign researchers. The librarians also use Instagram as a platform to connect with other cultural heritage institutions and librarians all over the world. Through publishing esthetically pleasing pictures of old historical books, maps and other materials, they want to attract new users and put their library on the map. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Särpräglad kommunikation: En studie om särpräglad, homogen & inkongruent kommunikation inom bilbranschen2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The following bachelor thesis is a contribution to the already existing work within the area of strategic communication and brand communication. The main purpose of this report is to find out and analyse if the brands Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz manage to be unique, in their brand communication, in comparison to each other. This study aims to clarify exactly where these unique characteristics lie, if they are anywhere to be found. By studying the brands homogeneity and possible incongruence within the two dimensions rhetoric and graphic the study’s intentions is to result in the brands concept. By clarifying the brands conceptual foundation, the analysis will be able to point out the unique characteristics in the brand communication. The goal of the study is also to give a better knowledge and insight about building brands and brand communication.

The two issues of the study are the following: 1) How does Audi’s, BMW’s and Mercedes-Benz’s brand communication differentiate from each other in terms of homogeneity and incongruence? 2) Does the brands succeed to communicate its unique characteristics despite the strong brand competition? The theoretical frameworks on which the study is mainly built on are theories concerning 1) incongruence brand communication, 2) the traditional perspective of brand communication, 3) the three dimensions within the study of brands.

The method that is used in the search of answering the studies issues is a qualitative content analysis. The empirical material of this study is based on nine different information brochures describing three models of each brand.  Also six TV commercials, two from each brand, that represent various models of the three brands. We have also done a short interview with an anonymous employee at BMW Sweden, who answered a few questions regarding the brand.

The results show that all three brands have a communication that is homogeny. However, they take steps in various directions in their communication that reduce this homogeny. The study shows that these steps are often taken in the communication regarding the smaller car models; A3, 1-series and A-class. The results show that the brands succeed with communicating their unique characteristics with Audis concept of incredible technical performance, BMW with its familial and everyday feel and Mercedes-Benz with the concept of pure driving experience and tradition.

Keywords: Traditional perspective, incongruence, homogeny, unique characteristics, rhetoric, graphic, concept, corporate branding and strategic communication.

Towards a Standard Heritage: Institutional Practices and Metadata Standards in the Library, Archival and Museum Domains2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis is to investigate the prospects and potential consequences of standardisation in the cultural heritage sector. Libraries, archives and museums are studied as separate domains and the correlation between the epistemological views, institutional practices and the central document types are investigated in the light of the prominent domain-specific metadata standards. The investigation is situated in the metatheoretical framework of collectivism and more specifically in the socio-cultural theoretical perspective that enables the analysis of libraries, archives and museum as collectives centred on specific practices. Domain analysis, as advocated by Hjørland, provides a methodological structure for delineating the domains through epistemological studies and analysing the documents connected with these domains. The library domain is studied in relation to the MARC-format, the archival domain through EAD and the museum domain on the basis of CIDOC-CRM. It is found that MARC and EAD are adapted to the central document type of the domains in which they were developed, that the standards reflect the practices of those domains and that they are transferable beyond the domain to a limited extent. CIDOC-CRM could more easily be used in other domains to provide semantic interoperability enhancing joint retrieval. However, a change in documentary practice might have implications for the view of the documents and the very definition of the domains. Standardisation as such is normative and favours a single perspective above all others. Developing a standard across the domains requires careful consideration to avoid loss of domain-specific practices and information and may lead to a reconstitution of the domain.

    Abstract [en]

Title: Corporate social performance - How to become a employer of choice?

Author: Siri Westerberg & Björn Viktor Ängerfors

    Tutor: Josef Pallas

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis was to study which aspects of an Employer brand that job seekers value the highest, and are therefore the most important to communicate to this group. Key questions to be answered are Which aspects of an employer brand are rated highest by students when it comes to choosing an employer? Is there a difference between men and women in what they value highest and lowest? Is there a difference in how job seekers rate the highest and lowest rated dimensions depending on how long they have studied?

Method/Material: The material used in this article consists of a survey filled out by 49 respondents who were all students at Uppsala University, Sweden. The survey was based on a model of corporate social performance (CSP), taken from the Kinder, Lydenberg and Domini company profiles index. Main results: The main results demonstrate that the aspect that was rated highest by respondents was that the company has an accepting attitude toward its gay and lesbian employees. There was however no great difference between the four CSP dimensions. The main results further show that the companys’ treatment of its employees is something jobseekers value when considering seeking employment at a company. The survey did not find that there was any notable difference between male and female respondents. The survey found that for three of four CSP dimensions, respondents tended to rate lower the further along in their educations they were.

Distribuerad öppenhet: En studie av konceptualiseringen av öppenhet inom open access-rörelsen2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The following thesis concerns the conceptualization of openness within the open access movement. Open accesscan be understood as a phenomenon or a movement that aims at changing the current system of scholarly communication.Consequentially, the movements goals arose in relation to the escalating serials crisis in scholarly communicationand the increasing power of commercial publishers. The purpose of the thesis is to study three centralopen access declarations with the aim of uncovering the different conceptualizations of openness found withinthese texts. Leaning on the theoretical position known as actor-network theory, the declarations role within a surroundingnetwork is explored by focusing on how openness as a concept has been produced and reproduced bycentral actors. Two overarching questions frames the study: How is openness conceptualized within the declarations? And how can openness, as a concept, be understood as an effect generated by a larger network? The first part of the study focuses on the first question. In order to provide an answer I have conducted athematically structured text analysis of the declarations. The results of this part show that openness, in relation toopen access, is part of a discourse where research is considered a public good. I claim that this indicates thatopenness is related to the larger questions of information freedom and the enclosure of intellectual commons. The purpose of openness is described within the declarations as contributing to mechanisms of decentralized controlover information, which in itself generates a greater efficiency and lower costs in regards to scholarly communication. The second part of the study is concerned with the larger, overarching network and in what way the conceptualizationof openness can be seen as a network generated effect. To answer this question I deploy the theoreticaltools provided by ANT. Focus lies on how the declarations relate to each other and on how central actors havecontributed to the conceptualizations. The results show that openness and open access has shifting meanings thathave been modified in various ways. They also show that actors through a collective negotiation process defineand shape the meaning of openness by circulating ideas on electronic dissemination and distributed processes

    Abstract [en]

This thesis emanates from the understanding that it is of importance that transgender-themed literature is indexed in accordance with how people who identify as trans name themselves and interpret the concept of trans. Based on interviews with representatives from controlled vocabularies and LibraryThing users who tag transgender-themed material, existing attitudes towards user influence in controlled vocabularies are described and the significance of tagging for transgender-themed material is looked into. With queer theory and postcolonial theory as its main framework the analysis looks at what possibilities there are for users to influence controlled vocabularies and explores possible strategies for a future library catalog that includes the voice of the Other. The study lands in the understanding that many of the resisting attitudes towards user influence within the systems for subject headings in fact lie in the systems’ limitations. The conclusion is made that the concept of connected knowledge could be a possible way to integrate Others in the shaping of subject headings. Opening controlled vocabularies to user influence does not automatically break down hegemonic structures or include all voices, nor does it make indexing predictable. But as the monolithic power is compromised, the possibility of transgender-themed literature to be indexed according to how people who identify as trans would name it increases. This is a two years master’s thesis.

    Abstract [en]

Based on real-world examples of identity theft, and particularly a recent incident in Sweden, this paper explores the nature of identification from a social ontology point of view. This is contrasted with the traditional representational view, which is shown unable to handle critical aspects related to institutional control of identifiers and identity. Specifically, the paper shows that identification and the definition and allocation of identifiers is an institutional and political rather than scientific process, and that since “identity” in itself is a social construct, the process of identification depends on the institutional context in which the objects to identify exist as valid institutional facts. These institutional objects are often originally generated by the use of information systems, which means that genuine real-world institutional objects and their identifiers can be found within these information systems. This implies that the representational view of information systems with a sharp distinction between the real world outside the information system and the system itself (only seen as a model or perceived state of that real world) cannot be maintained.

Not so Shore Anymore: The New Imperatives When Sourcing in the Age of Open2015In: Proceedings of the 23rd European Conference on Information Systems / [ed] Jörg Becker, Jan vom Brocke, Marco de Marco, 2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Software outsourcing has been the subject of much research in the past 25 years, largely because of potential cost savings envisaged through lower labour costs, ‘follow-the-sun’ development, access to skilled developers, and proximity to new markets. In recent years, the success of the open source phe-nomenon has inspired a number of new forms of sourcing that combine the potential of global sourcing with the elusive and much sought-after possibility of increased innovation. Three of these new forms of sourcing are opensourcing, innersourcing and crowdsourcing. Based on a comparative analysis of a number of case studies of these forms of sourcing, we illustrate how they differ in both significant and subtle ways from outsourcing. We conclude that these emerging sourcing approaches call for conceptual development and refocusing. Specifically, to understand software sourcing in the age of open, the important concept is no longer ‘shoring,’ but rather five identified imperatives (governance sharedness, unknownness, intrinsicness, innovativeness and co-opetitiveness) and their implications for the development situation at hand.

Software Sourcing in the Age of Open: Leveraging the Unknown Workforce2015 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This SpringerBrief discusses multiple forms of open-source-inspired outsourcing: opensourcing, innersourcing and crowdsourcing. It uses a framework-based comparison to explain the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. By pointing out characteristics along with benefits and pitfalls of each approach, the authors provide nuanced and research-based advice to managers and developers facing software sourcing decisions. The differences and commonalities of these three emerging approaches are carefully analyzed. Chapters explore the primary challenges of reliability, efficiency and robustness in open-source methods. Examples from industrial cases are included, along with extensive references to recent research. The brief concludes with a comparative analysis of approaches and outlines key implications to be aware of when outsourcing. Software Sourcing in the Age of Open: Leveraging the Unknown Workforce is designed for professionals and researchers interested in outsourcing challenges. The content is also suitable for postgraduate students interested in contemporary software sourcing approaches.

In this panel report, we analyze the discussion that unfolded during the “Design Science Research: A Scandinavian Approach?” panel held at the third Scandinavian Conference on Information Systems in Sigtuna, Sweden, in August, 2012. The second author of this paper chaired the panel, which also included Tone Bratteteig, Shirley Gregor, Ola Henfridsson, Alan Hevner, Jan Pries-Heje, and Tuure Tuunanen as panelists. Three themes that highlight how the design of artifacts contributes to knowledge production emerged during the panel. The first theme addresses our responsibility, as a research community, to come up not only with descriptions of the world but also to try to change things into preferable states. The second theme emphasizes that knowledge production also happens through the design of artifacts. The third theme identifies an apparent pragmatic turn in our discipline.

Vad händer med åsikterna?: Järvadialogen som kommunikationsinsats2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The area of Järvafältet in the northern parts of Stockholm is one of the many large-scale investments into Swedish residency executed in the 60’s and 70’s, and which got the name Miljonprogrammet. Not until today these buildings have been restored, and frustration has been brewing in these areas for some time. Järvadialogen is the name of a communication program connected to the housing restoration in the area of Husby, which is a part of Järvafältet, and functions as a promotional and informational dialogue between residents in the area and those responsible for the communication program. The cultural diversity in the area of Husby is significant, and with theories on intercultural communication, change communication and power we study the performed communicative process and the manner in which it is received. How is the communication program Järvadialogen shaped and performed, and how are the messages sent received and interpreted? This following study looks at how the communication program Järvadialogen is designed and carried out, as well as how the communication is received. It questions what happens to the opinions? and by performing an extensive text analysis complemented by personal interviews along with group interviews the study explores both sender and receiver perspectives. Methods and theories bring to light the importance of building a relationship among sender and receiver, power relations and change communication. Cultural aspects are evaluated and criticized in regards to communication performance, and more specifically this study shows that the existing frustration in connection to the communication program in Husby is not a result of miscommunication, but of a sense of exclusion, which originates in socio- and economic differences.

Att förebygga förändringsmotstånd i en organisation i samband med IT-implementation2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Main results: Världens Chans can be seen as an information campaign by the government which purpose is to contribute to the fulfilment of the millennium goals by drawing the attention of the public to their existence. Utrota Fattigdomen Nu, on the other hand, is an influence campaign by the civil society which purpose is to exterminate poverty by putting a pressure on power holders and to change the attitudes and the behaviours among the public. Both campaigns are based on a network with lots of different actors, functioning as opinion makers. Furthermore, communication campaigns are important tools in the fight against poverty.
