Down the Slippery Slope: The Perils of the Academic Research Industry2013In: Transformations in Research, Higher Education and the Academic Market: The Breakdown of Scientific Thought / [ed] Sharon Rider, Ylva Hasselberg, Alexandra Waluszewski, Dordrecht: Springer Netherlands, 2013, 125-135 p.Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present chapter attempts to describe the move into what can be called the era of the academic research industry. To write and “produce” more in less time has become a value in itself, rhetorically accompanied by claims that it needs to be “cutting edge” and to achieve excellence. Because research is much like performing arts, the advantages of scale, however, are illusory. The equation of more and better research in less time is hard to achieve because of the inherent logic of creativity in research: the time-consuming activities of experimentation and failure. The overall perils of the industrialization of academic research lie in that these insights, that we need to allow for risk-taking and the acceptance of genuine uncertainty, are buried in all the more elaborate efforts of time and space management that deceptively make us feel as if we are in control. As a consequence of the “slippery-slope” effect, where you do not notice each individual step along the treacherous path, academic researchers more or less tacitly accept these efficiency practices and norms evolving within the research industry, practices that actually may destroy or irrevocably damage necessary preconditions for original research, innovation, and discovery.

Has academic freedom survived?: An interview study of the conditions for researchers in an era of paradigmatic change2007In: Higher Education Quarterly, ISSN 0951-5224, Vol. 61, no 3, 334-361 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

European universities are being shaken by two revolutions. One is a radical change in the way research is funded, the other is the increased emphasis on the teaching role of the universities. This interview study examines what effects these radical institutional changes have had on academic freedom. Based on a small number of in-depth interviews with Swedish researchers in various disciplines, different posts, active either at an ancient or a new university, the study explores the concept and content of academic freedom, the current prospects for its survival and the effect of changes in funding on the content of research and research process as such. The results suggest that the institutional changes, not least in the way the funding system is organised, are having a determinate impact on the behaviour of academics, while academic freedom as a norm still thrives in the research community as a whole.

Intellectual conformism depends on institutional incentives, not on socialized culture:  2006In: Behavioral and Brain Sciences, ISSN 0140-525X, E-ISSN 1469-1825, Vol. 29, no 6, 569-570 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The study by Ceci et al. shows that academic behavior associated with the core principles of intellectual freedom is more shaped by institutional incentives than by organizational culture. From an organizational theoretical point of view, this is quite an unexpected finding, not least because we do believe universities to be fairly strong and explicit cultures that should be successful in socialization.

The cultural roots of Estonia's successful transition: How historical legacies shaped the 1990s2007In: East European Politics and Societies, ISSN 0888-3254, E-ISSN 1533-8371, Vol. 21, no 2, 316-347 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article investigates the cultural roots of Estonia's surprisingly successful transitions in the 1990s. Taking the point of departure in historical institutionalism, two layers of political cultural legacies are identified as particularly crucial in preparing Estonia for the democratic government installed after independence. First, the article argues that even in a Baltic context, Estonia stood out as a hotbed for social initiatives and elite networks during Communist times. Second, to understand why such liberalisation within the authoritarian Communist regime started earlier in Estonia than elsewhere in the Soviet Union, there is a need to acknowledge the importance that the historical experiences of the inter-war republic played. Estonia then developed a civic culture that partly survived even during the Pats regime from 1934 to 1939. These experiences surfaced once the yolk of Stalinism was lifted in the 1950s and shaped Estonia under Communism into a society of "collective mobilization" where democratically inclined counter-elites could form.
