    Abstract [en]

    The dissertation addresses the problem of reference actualised in religiousrealism's claim that religious nonrealism is religiously inadequate since init "God" does not refer to a God existing independently of human conceptualisations. The study aims to show that the referential argument against religious nonrealism is not necessarily successful once the existential and referential presumptions of the argument are critically examined. To that end a gradual distinction between conceptualisations with lower and higher dependencies on physical characteristics is introduced to account for how we conceptualise our surroundings and why we consider something to be real or not. Further, Donnellan's referential-attributive distinction is understood in the light of the dissolution of the strict division between semantics and pragmatics, and is used for suggesting a view on the referent as constituted by the speaker's directive intentions as manifested and interpreted in the context of utterance. From ordinary language use, including contexts such as children's make-believe play, it is shown that both physically existing and so called non-existing objects are constituted as referents with higher or lower dependencies on physical characteristics and as having various conceptual relations and functions. It is finally argued that such a pragmatic analysis of what constitutes the referent to "God" can account for why God in a religious context can be considered to be real without additionally asserting God's metaphysical and independent existence.

    Finns det en klyfta mellan kyrkan och folket?: Intervjuer med församlingsbor och präster i Stockholmsområdet2009Doktoravhandling, monografi
    Abstract [en]

    Aim. To describe and compare parishioners’ and minister’s 1) existential, spiritual and religious experiences, 2) expectations and conceptions regard-ing the Church and the ecclesial activities and 3) in theological terms reflect over these experiences and conceptions.

    Method. A random, stratified, sample was constructed relating to parishion-ers and ministers in 24 parishes in the Stockholm bishopric, concerning men and women in the ages 25-65. The educational level of parishioners, was comparable to the average of Stockholm residents.

    Results. Both parishioners and ministers described several existential and spiritual/religious experiences. It was not clear if there were any differences between the two groups concerning spiritual/religious experiences. Yet, their experiences were interpreted in different ways, inasmuch that ministers more often interpreted their experiences in confessional terms. Parishioners thought that religion could be expressed in many different ways. They considered the divine services to be too rigid and distant and wished that ministers should be on their own level and not set themselves above ordinary people. The ministers could be placed on an continuum from sender orientation to receiver orientation due to their expectations and con-ceptions regarding the Church and the ecclesial activities. Sender orientation means to primarily start with the Church statement of faith. Receiver orienta-tion means, to primarily start with the parishioners from their own world-view where religion can be expressed in many different ways. The ministers presented in total 48% sender orientation descriptions and 52% receiver ori-entation. Comparable figures for the parishioners were 5% sender orientation and 95% receiver orientation.

    Conclusions. There seems to be a tension between, on one hand the view of a Church with an aim to meet the existential and spiritual needs of the pa-rishioners, and on the other hand a Church with a primary mission to com-municate the Christian articles of faith. If half of the ministers have a direc-tion in which parishioners have no interest and do not ask for, this might be a problem for the Church.

    Twenty-four parishioners and 24 ministers of the Church of Sweden were interviewed concerning their beliefs about religion, the Church and ecclesiastic activities. The results showed that ministers could be placed on a continuum ranging from sender orientation to receiver orientation. Sender orientation means, primarily, directed towards reaching people who proceed from a definite opinion, namely the Church's teaching. Receiver orientation means, primarily, directed towards reaching people who proceed from their own worldview where religion may be expressed in many different ways. Parishioners gave a total of 5% sender-oriented and 95% receiver-oriented descriptions. Comparable figures for ministers were 48% sender-oriented and 52% receiver-oriented. If more than half the ministers have an orientation that neither interests nor attracts parishioners, this can be a problem to the Church.

    BETWEEN THE NARROW LIMITS OF STRUCTURAL VIOLENCE AND ARMED CONFLICT VIOLENCE: Case Study of Indigenous Peoples in Arauca, Colombia2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave

    Indigenous communities living in Arauca department, a region located on the Eastern Plains of Colombia, are at an imminent risk of physical and cultural extermination -according to the orders 004 and 382 from the Constitutional Court of Colombia- due to a double vulnerability which stems from a historic structural violence dating from the creation of the nation-state and direct violence as a consequence of armed conflict. The physical extermination refers to the high mortality rates that this population suffers either by violence or natural death, while the cultural extermination is a result of both an accelerated process of acculturation and a progressive loss of culture, territory and respect from traditional authorities. This study, by analyzing the local context and the actions that have done harm, addresses the best practices for humanitarian interventions over the role of territory, culture, governance and autonomy as key factors for empowering community members to overcome, face or diminish the consequences of these vulnerabilities.

    Conflict Drivers between the Lou Nuer and Murle of South Sudan2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    This study analyzes the major conflict drivers behind an inter-ethnic conflict in South Sudan between the Murle and Lou Nuer people groups in 2011 and 2012. It will begin with the historical context of the current conflict. Myriad theories exist as to the causes of conflict, but there is no defined method to analyze each and every context. The second step of this paper will be to examine three different theoretical frameworks- political, economic and social. Conflicts are driven by multiple causes, and in this case various types of causes as well. Different perspectives on the reasons behind conflict must be analyzed, and in particular how they interact and influence each other. The final task will be to consider the significance of various political, economic and social conflict drivers in the particular context of the Lou Nuer and Murle of Jonglei State, South Sudan.

    The research was carried out over a period of eight months in South Sudan and during the time period both sides continued to carry out major attacks. It is recognized that studying an ongoing conflict is ambitious as conflicts are not static and continually change. However, multiple approaches are being attempted to end the fighting between the Murle and Lou Nuer while not fully understanding all the causes behind the conflict. This paper intends to expand humanitarian comprehension on the topic and encourage parties involved in the peace process to implement programs that counteract the conflict drivers.

    Objective:

    To determine whether employees’ spiritual values and practicesin the workplace attenuate occupational stress and work-related exhaustion,and promote mental well-being.

    Methods:

    Participants (N = 649) completedvalidated measures of mental well-being, occupational stress, and workrelatedexhaustion, as well as two newly developed measures of individualspiritual values and practices in the workplace.

    Results:

    Factor analysis confirmedthat spirituality items belonged to two separate constructs. In logisticregression models, the Spiritual Values in the Workplace scale was positivelyassociated with mental well-being and low occupational stress. Thespiritual practices at work scale was positively associated with low workrelatedexhaustion.

    Conclusions:

    Employee spiritual values and practices, aswell as workplace acceptance of such practices, appear to promote mentalwell-being and attenuate stress.

    Den unge Manfred Björkquist: Hur en vision av kristendomens möte med kultur och samhälle växer fram2008Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    This thesis is a biographical study of Manfred Björkquist’s early life and addresses questions concerning the development of his vision of Christianity, culture and soci-ety. A comparison is also made between Björkquist’s vision and the classical typol-ogy of H. Richard Niebuhr. The investigation is motivated by the pivotal role Man-fred Björkquist (1884-1985) played in Swedish church life in the 20th century. He was born in northern Sweden to a country vicar and follower of confessional Luther-anism and Pietism. In 1902-09 Björkquist studied at the University of Uppsala with the goal of becoming a Lutheran priest and missionary. Parallell to his studies, Björkquist was active in Christian work which was characterized by Lutheran Pie-tism, openness to Anglo-Saxon revivalism and a belief in the relevance of the na-tional church. A spiritual awakening in the Christian Student Association in Uppsala in the spring of 1908 and a new church-centered Lutheran theology provided the immediate context of Björkquist’s vision. He expressed it with the catchword »The people of Sweden – a people of God through Jesus Christ» and connected it to his concept of the national church, folkkyrkan (the folk church), as a vehicle for re-christianizing the nation. This re-christianization was meant to take place through voluntary conversion of individuals to personal faith in Jesus Christ and an active cultural and social involvement of the church in the contemporary life of the nation. In accordance with the social component of his concept of the national church, Björkquist used his vision to attempt to bring about a consensus between rival social groups and contending ideologies through dialogue. By adopting the organizational methods and patterns of activities that characterized the new social movements, Björkquist at the same time strengthened the forces of change in civil society.

    Abstract [en]

    Since Max Weber's controversial thesis about the source of Western capitalism, social scientists have become embroiled in, and preoccupied with the central question of the function of ideology in human behaviour. In the process, other questions relating to this issue and especially that of religion came to attract the attention of many researchers. Such researchers focus their attention on the explanation of human behaviour in the sense of the motivating impetus for an individual's action. This line of research has been pursued in this study with the objective to explore the link between selected religious (Christian) doctrines and certain socioeconomic values and religious actions, particularly the engagement in religious rituals. A quantitative data analysis approach has been employed to reach conclusions on data collected from three Christian denominations in Ghana in 1995/96: Roman Catholic, Evangelical Presbyterian, and Seventh-Day Adventist Churches. The main emphasis has been on the use of Attribution and Expectancy theories of motivation and their role in human behaviour. Educational attainment appears to dictate respondents' socioeconomic values rather than religious beliefs (Attribution and Expectancy), while these beliefs have a measure of impact on the practical religiosity of respondents. It has been argued that while Attribution and Expectancy aspects of religious beliefs play a vital role individually in urgingbelievers to pursue a religious project, the influence of each should rather be seen as complementing the other as each separately is necessary but insufficient for religious involvement. On the other hand it is the Expectancy aspect that exerts more influence on believers' ritual practices than Attribution. On the whole the extent of a believer's religious involvement is a function of both inferential dimensions. These inferences have insignificant impact on the socioeconomic values of respondents in this study.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis approaches the topic of communication strategies that can influence and improve peace negotiations and conflict resolutions. The aim of this thesis is to highlight ways in which the use of communication can possibly pave the way towards a world with less conflicts by researching two communication approaches called nonviolent communication and strategic communication. To achieve a greater understanding of the two communication models, they will be applied to the case study of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Consequently, this thesis will also include a comparative analysis which will highlight differences and similarities between the two approaches where, as a result, the core of communication will be discussed.Overall, this thesis will highlight the importance of communication. Communication is a topic that affects all areas of life, the area of religion included. This thesis argues that both nonviolent communication and strategic communication are essential approaches in realising what the core of communication entails. To conclude, this thesis states that both of the two chosen communication models are useful, and can possibly pave the way towards a world with less conflicts, but in different ways. This thesis demonstrates that communication can build bridges, make connections, and restore faith in humanity.

    Abstract [en]

    The main purpose of the thesis is to investigate the possibility of bridging the dichotomy between Islam and the criteria of modern society by means of reinterpreting the principles (foundations) of Islam. The reformists Abdolkarim Soroush, Sedigheh Vasmaghi and Tariq Ramadan seek to prove that the methods keeping strictly within the boundaries of tradition interpreting the Quran along the lines of previous generations is not necessarily the sole means of coming to an understanding of the Quran’s message. The thesis discusses these reinterpreters’ critique of tradition and their arguments for the possibility of uniting the principles of Islam with the prerequisites of modern society. In conjunction with this, the question whether modern society presupposes a strict division between the private and the public sphere is problematized from a point of departure in Jeffrey Stout’s Democracy and Tradition. The thesis attempts to show potential conceptions of a modern society based on the principles of Islam.
