Integral invariants in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories2011Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 5, s. 021-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Integral invariants in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories are discussed in spacetime dimensions 4 <= D <= 10 for SU(k) gauge groups. It is shown that, in addition to the action, there are three special invariants in all dimensions. Two of these, the single-and double-trace F-4 invariants, are of Chern-Simons type in D = 9, 10 and BPS type in D <= 8, while the third, the double-trace of two derivatives acting on F-4, can be expressed in terms of a gauge-invariant super-D-form in all dimensions. We show that the super-ten-forms for D = 10 F-4 invariants have interesting cohomological properties and we also discuss some features of other invariants, including the single-trace d(2)F(4), which has a special form in D = 10. The implications of these results for ultra-violet divergences are discussed in the framework of algebraic renormalisation.

    Infinitely many M2-instanton corrections to M-theory on G(2)-manifolds2018Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 9, artikel-id 077Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We consider the non-perturbative superpotential for a class of four-dimensional N = 1 vacua obtained from M-theory on seven-manifolds with holonomy G(2). The class of G(2)-holonomy manifolds we consider are so-called twisted connected sum (TCS) constructions, which have the topology of a K3-fibration over S-3. We show that the non-perturbative superpotential of M-theory on a class of TCS geometries receives infinitely many inequivalent M2-instanton contributions from infinitely many three-spheres, which we conjecture are supersymmetric (and thus associative) cycles. The rationale for our construction is provided by the duality chain of [1], which relates M-theory on TCS G(2) manifolds to E-8 x E-8 heterotic backgrounds on the Schoen Calabi-Yau threefold, as well as to F-theory on a K3-fibered Calabi-Yau fourfold. The latter are known to have an infinite number of instanton corrections to the superpotential and it is these contributions that we trace through the duality chain back to the G(2)-compactification.

    Abstract [en]

Heavy fermion alloys at critical doping typically exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperatures, including a logarithmic or power law rise in the ratio of specific heat to temperature as the temperature is lowered. Anomalous specific heat of this type is also observed in a simple class of gravitational dual models that exhibit anisotropic scaling with dynamical critical exponent z > 1.

Rigorous Test of Non-conformal Holography: Wilson Loops in N=2* Theory2013Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 3, s. 062-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

N=2* gauge theory in four space-time dimensions arises as a deformation of the parent N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mill theory under which its hypermultiplet acquires a mass. This theory, on the one hand, has a known supergravity dual and on the other hand is amenable to localization. We explain, using localization, a dynamical selection of the supergravity Coulomb branch vacuum at large N. We also demonstrate that large Wilson loops obey perimeter law, again finding exact match between direct field-theory calculations and string theory. Additionally, we compute free energy at large 't Hooft coupling.

    One-point functions in AdS/dCFT from matrix product states2016Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 2, artikel-id 052Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

One-point functions of certain non-protected scalar operators in the defect CFT dual to the D3-D5 probe brane system with k units of world volume flux can be expressed as overlaps between Bethe eigenstates of the Heisenberg spin chain and a matrix product state. We present a closed expression of determinant form for these one-point functions, valid for any value of k. The determinant formula factorizes into the k = 2 result times a k-dependent pre-factor. Making use of the transfer matrix of the Heisenberg spin chain we recursively relate the matrix product state for higher even and odd k to the matrix product state for k = 2 and k = 3 respectively. We furthermore find evidence that the matrix product states for k = 2 and k = 3 are related via a ratio of Baxter's Q-operators. The general k formula has an interesting thermodynamical limit involving a non-trivial scaling of k, which indicates that the match between string and field theory one-point functions found for chiral primaries might be tested for non-protected operators as well. We revisit the string computation for chiral primaries and discuss how it can be extended to non-protected operators.

Extended supersymmetric sigma models in AdS(4) from projective superspace2012Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 5, s. 138-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

There exist two superspace approaches to describe N = 2 supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-models in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS(4)) space: (i) in terms of N = 1 Ads chiral superfields, as developed in arXiv:1105.3111 and arXiv:1108.5290; and (ii) in terms of N = 2 polar supermultiplets using the AdS projective-superspace techniques developed in arXiv:0807.3368. The virtue of the approach (i) is that it makes manifest the geometric properties of the N = 2 supersymmetric sigma-models in AdS(4). The target space must be a non-compact hyperkahler manifold endowed with a Killing vector field which generates an SO(2) group of rotations on the two-sphere of complex structures. The power of the approach (ii) is that it allows us, in principle, to generate hyperkahler metrics as well as to address the problem of deformations of such metrics. Here we show how to relate the formulation (ii) to (i) by integrating out an infinite number of N = 1 AdS auxiliary superfields and performing a superfield duality transformation. We also develop a novel description of the most general N = 2 supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-model in AdS(4) in terms of chiral superfields on three-dimensional N = 2 flat superspace without central charge. This superspace naturally originates from a conformally flat realization for the four-dimensional N = 2 AdS superspace that makes use of Poincare coordinates for AdS(4). This novel formulation allows us to uncover several interesting geometric results.

Ladders for Wilson loops beyond leading order2012Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 9, s. 057-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We set up a general scheme to resum ladder diagrams for the quark-anti-quark potential in N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory, and do explicit calculations at the next-to-leading order. The results perfectly agree with string theory in AdS(5) x S-5 when continued to strong coupling, in spite of a potential order-of-limits problem.

    The holographic interpretation of J¯T-deformed CFTs2019Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 1, artikel-id 198Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Recently, a non-local yet possibly UV-complete quantum field theory has been constructed by deforming a two-dimensional CFT by the composite operator JT, where J is a chiral U(1) current and T is a component of the stress tensor. Assuming the original CFT was a holographic CFT, we work out the holographic dual of its JT deformation. We find that the dual spacetime is still AdS(3), but with modified boundary conditions that mix the metric and the Chern-Simons gauge field dual to the U(1) current. We show that when the coefficient of the chiral anomaly for J vanishes, the energy and thermodynamics of black holes obeying these modified boundary conditions precisely reproduce the previously derived field theory spectrum and thermodynamics. Our proposed holographic dictionary can also reproduce the field-theoretical spectrum in presence of the chiral anomaly, upon a certain assumption that we justify. The asymptotic symmetry group associated to these boundary conditions consists of two copies of the Virasoro and one copy of the U(1) Ka-Moody algebra, just as before the deformation; the only effect of the latter is to modify the spacetime dependence of the right-moving Virasoro generators, whose action becomes state-dependent and effectively non-local.

    Complete integration-by-parts reductions of the non-planar hexagon-box via module intersections2018Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 9, artikel-id 24Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We present the powerful module-intersection integration-by-parts (IBP) method, suitable for multi-loop and multi-scale Feynman integral reduction. Utilizing modern computational algebraic geometry techniques, this new method successfully trims traditional IBP systems dramatically to much simpler integral-relation systems on unitarity cuts. We demonstrate the power of this method by explicitly carrying out the complete analytic reduction of two-loop five-point non-planar hexagon-box integrals, with degree-four numerators, to a basis of 73 master integrals.

    Abstract [en]

We construct topological Wess-Zumino term for supercoset sigma-models on various AdS 3 backgrounds. For appropriately chosen set of parameters, the sigma-model remains integrable when the Wess-Zumino term is added to the action. Moreover, the conditions for integrability, kappa-symmetry and conformal invariance are equivalent to each other.

String corrections to circular Wilson loop and anomalies2018Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 2, artikel-id 120Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We study string quantum corrections to the ratio of latitude and circular Wilson loops in N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling. Conformal gauge for the corresponding minimal surface in AdS(5) x S-5 is singular and we show that an IR anomaly associated with the divergence in the conformal factor removes previously reported discrepancy with the exact field -theory result. We also carefully check conformal anomaly cancellation and recalculate fluctuation determinants by directly evaluting phaseshifts for all the fluctuation modes.

    Heavy charged scalars from cs̄ fusion: a generic search strategy applied to a 3HDM with U(1) x U(1) family symmetry2018Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 3, artikel-id 024Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We describe a class of three Higgs doublet models (3HDMs) with a softly broken U(1) x U(1) family symmetry that enforces a Cabibbo-like quark mixing while forbidding tree-level flavour changing neutral currents. The hierarchy in the observed quark masses is partly explained by a softer hierarchy in the vacuum expectation values of the three Higgs doublets. As a consequence, the physical scalar spectrum contains a Standard Model (SM) like Higgs boson h(125) while exotic scalars couple the strongest to the second quark family, leading to rather unconventional discovery channels that could be probed at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, we describe a search strategy for the lightest charged Higgs boson H-+/-, through the process c -> H+ -> W+ h(125), using a multivariate analysis that leads to an excellent discriminatory power against the SM background. Although the analysis is applied to the proposed class of 3HDMs, we employ a model-independent formulation such that it can be applied to any other model with the same discovery channel.

    4 Type IIB flux vacua from G-theory I2015Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 2, artikel-id 187Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We construct non-perturbatively exact four-dimensional Minkowski vacua of type IIB string theory with non-trivial fluxes. These solutions are found by gluing together, consistently with U-duality, local solutions of type IIB supergravity on T-4 x C with the metric, dilaton and flux potentials varying along C and the flux potentials oriented along T-4. We focus on solutions locally related via U-duality to non-compact Ricci-flat geometries. More general solutions and a complete analysis of the supersymmetry equations are presented in the companion paper [1]. We build a precise dictionary between fluxes in the global solutions and the geometry of an auxiliary K3 surface fibered over CP1. In the spirit of F-theory, the flux potentials are expressed in terms of locally holomorphic functions that parametrize the complex structure moduli space of the K3 fiber in the auxiliary geometry. The brane content is inferred from the monodromy data around the degeneration points of the fiber.

    Abstract [en]

We find analytic solutions of type IIB supergravity on geometries that locally take the form Mink x M-4 x C with M-4 a generalised complex manifold. The solutions involve the metric, the dilaton, NSNS and RR flux potentials (oriented along the M-4) parametrised by functions varying only over C. Under this assumption, the supersymmetry equations are solved using the formalism of pure spinors in terms of a finite number of holomorphic functions. Alternatively, the solutions can be viewed as vacua of maximally supersymmetric supergravity in six dimensions with a set of scalar fields varying holomorphically over C. For a class of solutions characterised by up to five holomorphic functions, we outline how the local solutions can be completed to four-dimensional flux vacua of type IIB theory. A detailed study of this global completion for solutions with two holomorphic functions has been carried out in the companion paper [1]. The fluxes of the global solutions are, as in F-theory, entirely codified in the geometry of an auxiliary K3 fibration over CP1. The results provide a geometric construction of fluxes in F-theory.

    Uniqueness of Two-Loop Master Contours2012Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 10, s. 026-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Generalized-unitarity calculations of two-loop amplitudes are performed by expanding the amplitude in a basis of master integrals and then determining the coefficients by taking a number of generalized cuts. In this paper, we present a complete classification of the solutions to the maximal cut of integrals with the double-box topology. The ideas presented here are expected to be relevant for all two-loop topologies as well. We find that these maximal-cut solutions are naturally associated with Riemann surfaces whose topology is determined by the number of states at the vertices of the double-box graph. In the case of four massless external momenta we find that, once the geometry of these Riemann surfaces is properly understood, there are uniquely defined master contours producing the coefficients of the double-box integrals in the basis decomposition of the two-loop amplitude. This is in perfect analogy with the situation in one-loop generalized unitarity. In addition, we point out that the chiral integrals recently introduced by Arkani-Hamed et al. can be used as master integrals for the double-box contributions to the two-loop amplitudes in any gauge theory. The infrared finiteness of these integrals allow for their coefficients as well as their integrated expressions to be evaluated in strictly four dimensions, providing significant technical simplification. We evaluate these integrals at four points and obtain remarkably compact results.

Black holes in supergravity and integrability2010Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 9, s. 80-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Stationary black holes of massless supergravity theories are described by certain geodesic curves on the target space that is obtained after dimensional reduction over time. When the target space is a symmetric coset space we make use of the group-theoretical structure to prove that the second order geodesic equations are integrable in the sense of Liouville, by explicitly constructing the correct amount of Hamiltonians in involution. This implies that the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism can be applied, which proves that all such black hole solutions, including non-extremal solutions, possess a description in terms of a (fake) superpotential. Furthermore, we improve the existing integration method by the construction of a Lax integration algorithm that integrates the second order equations in one step instead of the usual two step procedure. We illustrate this technology with a specific example.

    Abstract [en]

We generalise the standard, flat p-brane solutions sourced by a dilaton and a form field, by taking the worldvolume to be a curved Einstein space, such as (anti-)de Sitter space. Our method is based on reducing the p-branes to domain walls and then allowing these domain walls to be curved. For de Sitter worldvolumes this extends some recently constructed warped de Sitter non-compactifications. We restrict our analysis to solutions that possess scaling behavior and demonstrate that these scaling solutions are near-horizon limits of a more general solution. Finally, our framework can equally be used for spacelike branes and the uplift of the domain wall/cosmology correspondence becomes in this context a more general timelike/spacelike brane correspondence.

The N = 2* Super-Yang-Mills theory (SYM*) undergoes an infinite sequence of large-N quantum phase transitions. We compute expectation values of Wilson loops in k-symmetric and antisymmetric representations of the SU(N) gauge group in this theory and show that the same phenomenon that causes the phase transitions at finite coupling leads to a non-analytic dependence of Wilson loops on k/N when the coupling is strictly infinite, thus making the higher-representation Wilson loops ideal holographic probes of the non-trivial phase structure of SYM*.

    Abstract [en]

We show that gauge symmetry breaking in the Weinberg-Salam model can be implemented by a mere change of variables and without any explicit gauge fixing. The change of variables entails the concept of supercurrent which has been widely employed in the study of superconductivity. It also introduces a separation between the isospin and the hypercharge, suggesting that our new variables describe a strongly coupled regime of the electroweak theory. We discuss the description of various embedded topological defects in terms of these variables. We also propose that in terms of our variables the Weinberg-Salam model can be interpreted in terms of a gravity theory with the modulus of Higgs field as dilaton and the de Sitter space as the ground state.

In this paper we investigate the properties of series of vacua in the string theory landscape. In particular, we study minima to the flux potential in type IIB compactifications on the mirror quintic. Using geometric transitions, we embed its one-dimensional complex structure moduli space in that of another Calabi-Yau with h1,1 = 86 and h2,1 = 2. We then show how to construct infinite series of continuously connected minima to the mirror quintic potential by moving into this larger moduli space, applying its monodromies, and moving back. We provide an example of such series, and discuss their implications for the string theory landscape

We obtain all planar four-point correlators of half-BPS operators in N = 4 SYM up to five loops. The ansatz for the integrand is fixed partially by imposing lightcone OPE relations between different correlators. We then fix the integrated correlators by comparing their asymptotic expansions with simple data obtained from integrability. We extract OPE coefficients and find a prediction for the triple wrapping correction of the hexagon form factors, which contributes already at the five-loop order.

    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates scalar perturbations in the top-down supersymmetric Janus solutions dual to conformal interfaces in the D1/D5 CFT, finding analytic closed-form solutions. We obtain an explicit representation of the bulk-to-bulk propagator and extract the two-point correlation function of the dual operator with itself, whose form is not fixed by symmetry alone. We give an expression involving the sum of conformal blocks associated with the bulk-defect operator product expansion and briefly discuss finite-temperature extensions. To our knowledge, this is the first computation of a two-point function which is not completely determined by symmetry for a fully-backreacted, top-down holographic defect.

    Spontaneously broken Yang-Mills-Einstein supergravities as double copies2017Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, Vol. 2017, nr 6, s. -72, artikel-id 064Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Color/kinematics duality and the double-copy construction have proved to be systematic tools for gaining new insight into gravitational theories. Extending our earlier work, in this paper we introduce new double-copy constructions for large classes of spontaneously-broken Yang-Mills-Einstein theories with adjoint Higgs fields. One gauge-theory copy entering the construction is a spontaneously-broken (super-)Yang-Mills theory, while the other copy is a bosonic Yang-Mills-scalar theory with trilinear scalar interactions that display an explicitly-broken global symmetry. We show that the kinematic numerators of these gauge theories can be made to obey color/kinematics duality by exhibiting particular additional Lie-algebraic relations. We discuss in detail explicit examples with N=2 supersymmetry, focusing on Yang-Mills-Einstein supergravity theories belonging to the generic Jordan family in four and five dimensions, and identify the map between the supergravity and double-copy fields and parameters. We also briefly discuss the application of our results to N=4 supergravity theories. The constructions are illustrated by explicit examples of tree-level and one-loop scattering amplitudes.

Explicit formulae for Yang-Mills-Einstein amplitudes from the double copy2017Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 7, artikel-id 002Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Using the double-copy construction of Yang-Mills-Einstein theories formulated in our earlier work, we obtain compact presentations for single-trace Yang-Mills-Einstein tree amplitudes with up to five external gravitons and an arbitrary number of gluons. These are written as linear combinations of color-ordered Yang-Mills trees, where the coefficients are given by color/kinematics-satisfying numerators in a Yang-Mills + phi(3) theory. The construction outlined in this paper holds in general dimension and extends straightforwardly to supergravity theories. For one, two, and three external gravitons, our expressions give identical or simpler presentations of amplitudes already constructed through string-theory considerations or the scattering equations formalism. Our results are based on color/kinematics duality and gauge invariance, and strongly hint at a recursive structure underlying the single-trace amplitudes with an arbitrary number of gravitons. We also present explicit expressions for all-loop single-graviton Einstein-Yang-Mills amplitudes in terms of Yang-Mills amplitudes and, through gauge invariance, derive new all-loop amplitude relations for Yang-Mills theory.

    Abstract [en]

Scattering amplitudes have the potential to provide new insights to the study of supergravity theories with gauged R-symmetry and Minkowski vacua. Such gaugings break supersymmetry spontaneously, either partly or completely. In this paper, we develop a framework for double-copy constructions of Abelian and non-Abelian gaugings of N=8 supergravity with these properties. They are generally obtained as the double copy of a spontaneously-broken (possibly supersymmeric) gauge theory and a theory with explicitly-broken supersymmetry. We first identify purely-adjoint deformations of N=4 super-Yang-Millstheorythatpreservethedualitybetweencolorandkinematics. A combination of Higgsing and orbifolding yields the needed duality-satisfying gauge-theory factors with multiple matter representations. We present three explicit examples. Two are Cremmer-Scherk-Schwarz gaugings with unbroken N=6,4 supersymmetry and U(1) gauge group. The third has unbroken N=4 supersymmetry and SU(2) x U(1) gauge group. We also discuss examples in which the double-copy method gives theories with explicitly-broken supersymmetry.

    Double field theory at SL(2) angles2017Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 5, artikel-id 028Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

An extended field theory is presented that captures the full SL(2) x O(6; 6 vertical bar n) duality group of four-dimensional half-maximal supergravities. The theory has section constraints whose two inequivalent solutions correspond to minimal D = 10 supergravity and chiral half-maximal D = 6 supergravity, respectively coupled to vector and tensor multi-plets. The relation with O(6; 6+n) (heterotic) double field theory is thoroughly discussed. Non-Abelian interactions as well as background fluxes are captured by a deformation of the generalised diffeomorphisms. Finally, making use of the SL(2) duality structure, it is shown how to generate gaugings with non-trivial de Roo-Wagemans angles via generalised Scherk-Schwarz ansaatze. Such gaugings allow for moduli stabilisation including the SL(2) dilaton.

By imposing an upper limit on the volume of the internal manifold, as required in order to obtain finite values of the four-dimensional gauge couplings, and validity of the supergravity approximation we show that, for a given manifold, only a finite number of line bundle sums are consistent with supersymmetry. By explicitly scanning over this finite set of line bundle models on certain manifolds we show that, for a sufficiently small volume of the internal manifold, the family number distribution peaks at small values, consistent with three chiral families. The relation between the maximal number of families and the gauge coupling is discussed, which hints towards a possible explanation of the family problem.

    Abstract [en]

By considering a Gaussian truncation of N = 4 super Yang-Mills, we derive a set of Dyson equations that account for the ladder diagram contribution to connected correlators of circular Wilson loops. We consider different numbers of loops, with different relative orientations. We show that the Dyson equations admit a spectral representation in terms of eigenfunctions of a Schrodinger problem, whose classical limit describes the strong coupling limit of the ladder resummation. We also verify that in supersymmetric cases the exact solution to the Dyson equations reproduces known matrix model results.

    Abstract [en]

We construct a new class of differential operators that naturally act on AdS harmonic functions. These are weight shifting operators that change the spin and dimension of AdS representations. Together with CFT weight shifting operators, the new operators obey crossing equations that relate distinct representations of the conformal group. We apply our findings to the computation of Witten diagrams, focusing on the particular case of cubic interactions and on massive, symmetric and traceless fields. In particular we show that tree level 4-point Witten diagrams with arbitrary spins, both in the external fields and in the exchanged field, can be reduced to the action of weight shifting operators on similar 4-point Witten diagrams where all fields are scalars. We also show how to obtain the conformal partial wave expansion of these diagrams using the new set of operators. In the case of 1-loop diagrams with cubic couplings we show how to reduce them to similar 1-loop diagrams with scalar fields except for a single external spinning field (which must be a scalar in the case of a two-point diagram). As a bonus, we provide new CFT and AdS weight shifting operators for mixed-symmetry tensors.

    Abstract [en]

We present a version of the twin Higgs mechanism with vector-like top partners. In this setup all gauge anomalies automatically cancel, even without twin leptons. The matter content of the most minimal twin sector is therefore just two twin tops and one twin bottom. The LHC phenomenology, illustrated with two example models, is dominated by twin glueball decays, possibly in association with Higgs bosons. We further construct an explicit four-dimensional UV completion and discuss a variety of UV completions relevant for both vector-like and fraternal twin Higgs models.

A note on obstinate tachyons in classical dS solutions2013Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 3, s. 138-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The stabilisation of the dilaton and volume in tree-level flux compactifications leads to model independent and thus very powerful existence and stability criteria for dS solutions. In this paper we show that the sizes of cycles wrapped by orientifold planes are scalars whose scalings in the potential are not entirely model independent, but enough to entail strong stability constraints. For all known dS solutions arising from massive IIA supergravity flux compactifications on SU(3)-structure manifolds the tachyons are exactly within the subspace spanned by the dilaton, the total volume and the volumes of the orientifold cycles. We illustrate this in detail for the well-studied case of the O6 plane compactification on SU(2)xSU(2)/Z_2xZ_2. For that example we uncover another novel structure in the tachyon spectrum: the dS solutions have a singular, but supersymmetric, Minkowski limit, in which the tachyon exactly aligns with the sgoldstino.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper we propose a quantum version of the swampland conjecture. We argue that quantum instabilities of de Sitter space discovered using field theoretical methods, are directly related to the difficulties in finding stringy de Sitter vacua.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper we consider type IIA compactifications in the isotropic Z(2) x Z(2) orbifold with a flux-induced perturbative superpotential combined with non-perturbative effects. Without requiring the presence of O-planes, and simply having D6-branes as local sources, we demonstrate the existence of de Sitter (dS) critical points, where the non-perturbative contributions to the cosmological constant have negligible size. We note, however, that these solutions generically have tachyons. By means of a more systematic search, we are able to find two examples of stable dS vacua with no need for anti-branes or O-planes, which, however, exhibit important non-perturbative corrections. The examples that we present turn out to remain stable even after opening up the fourteen non-isotropic moduli.

    Abstract [en]

We consider a class of (orbifolds of) M-theory compactifications on S-d x T7-d with gauge fluxes yielding minimally supersymmetric STU-models in 4D. We present a group-theoretical derivation of the corresponding flux-induced superpotentials and argue that the aforementioned backgrounds provide a (globally) geometric origin for 4D theories that only look locally geometric from the perspective of twisted tori. In particular, we show that Q-flux can be used to generate compactifications on S-4 x T-3. We thus conclude that the effect of turning on non-geometric fluxes, at least when the section condition is solved, may be recovered by considering reductions on different topologies other than toroidal.

On the distribution of stable de Sitter vacua2013Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 3, s. 018-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The possible existence of (meta-) stable de Sitter vacua in string theory is of fundamental importance. So far, there are no fully stable solutions where all effects are under perturbative control. In this paper we investigate the presence of stable de Sitter vacua in type II string theory with non-geometric fluxes. We introduce a systematic method for solving the equations of motion at the origin of moduli space, by expressing the fluxes in terms of the supersymmetry breaking parameters. As a particular example, we revisit the geometric type IIA compactifications, and argue that non-geometric fluxes are necessary to have (isotropically) stable de Sitter solutions. We also analyse a class of type II compactifications with non-geometric fluxes, and study the distribution of (isotropically) stable de Sitter points in the parameter space. We do this through a random scan as well as through a complementary analysis of two-dimensional slices of the parameter space. We find that the (isotropically) stable de Sitter vacua are surprisingly rare, and organise themselves into thin sheets at small values of the cosmological constant.

    Type IIB on S-3 x S-3 through Q & P fluxes2016Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 1, artikel-id 057Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We study a class of orientifold compactifications of type IIB supergravity with fluxes down to 4D in connection with truncations of half-maximal gauged supergravities yielding isotropic STU-models with minimal supersymmetry. In this context, we make use of a group-theoretical approach in order to derive flux-induced superpotentials for different IIB backgrounds. We first review the toroidal case yielding CEP-like superpotentials characterised by their no-scale behaviour. We then turn to S-3 x S-3 and S-3 x T-3, which, surprisingly, give rise to effective descriptions of non-geometric Q- and P-fluxes through globally geometric non-toroidal compactifications. As a consequence, such constructions break the no-scale symmetry without invoking any non-perturbative effects.

    KK-monopoles and G-structures in M-theory/type IIA reductions2015Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 2, artikel-id 096Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We argue that M-theory/massive IIA backgrounds including KK-monopoles are suitably described in the language of G-structures and their intrinsic torsion. To this end, we study classes of minimal supergravity models that admit an interpretation as twisted reductions in which the twist parameters are not restricted to satisfy the Jacobi constraints w w = 0 required by an ordinary Scherk-Schwarz reduction. We first derive the correspondence between four-dimensional data and torsion classes of the internal space and, then, check the one-to-one correspondence between higher-dimensional and four-dimensional equations of motion. Remarkably, the whole construction holds regardless of the Jacobi constraints, thus shedding light upon the string/M-theory interpretation of (smeared) KK-monopoles.

A note on smeared branes in flux vacua and gauged supergravity2014Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 4, s. 025-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In the known examples of flux vacua with calibrated spacetime-filling sources (branes or orientifold planes), one can smear the source in order to perform a standard KK reduction and obtain a lower-dimensional supergravity description. Furthermore, it is expected that the smeared and localized solution preserve equal amounts of supersymmetry. In this note we point out that the AdS7 solution discussed in arXiv:1111.2605and arXiv:1309.2949 is a counterexample to this common lore. The solution is supersymmetric when the spacetime-filling D6-branes are localized but breaks supersymmetry in the smeared limit. By using the embedding tensor formalism we demonstrate that there is no gauged supergravity description for the solution, regardless of the source being smeared or not. We conjecture that for flux solutions with separation between the KK scale and the AdS radius this cannot occur.

    Abstract [en]

We consider known examples of non-supersymmetric AdS7 and AdS4 solutions arising from compactifications of massive type IIA supergravity and study their stability, taking into account the coupling between closed- and open-string sector excitations. Generically, open strings are found to develop modes with masses below the Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound. We comment on the relation with the Weak Gravity Conjecture, and how this analysis may play an important role in examining the validity of non-supersymmetric constructions in string theory.

    Unstoppable brane-flux decay of D6 branes2017Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 3, artikel-id 141Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We investigate p (D6) over bar branes inside a flux throat that carries K x M (D6) over bar charges with K the 3-form flux quantum and M the Romans mass. In such a setup brane-flux annihilation can proceed through the nucleation of KK5 branes. We find that within the calculable supergravity regime where g(s)p is large, the (D6) over bar branes annihilate immediately against the fluxes despite the existence of a metastable state at small p / M in the probe approximation. The crucial property that causes this naive conflict with effective field theory is a singularity in the 3-form flux, which we cut off at string scale. Our result explains the absence of regular solutions at finite temperature and suggests there should be a smooth time-dependent solution. We also discuss the qualitative differences between (D6) over bar branes and (D3) over bar branes, which makes it a priori not obvious to conclude the same instability for (D3) over bar branes.

Black holes as bubbles of AdS2017Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 10, artikel-id 171Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we propose that bubbles of AdS within Minkowski spacetime, stabilized at a finite radius by stiff matter and an electromagnetic gas, can be an alternative endpoint of gravitational collapse. The bubbles are horizonless with a size up to 12.5% larger than their Schwarzschild radius depending on their charge. We argue that they are stable against small perturbations, and have thermodynamical properties similar to those of real black holes. We provide a realization of the bubbles within string theory that relies on a specific brane intersection giving rise to a shell carrying dissolved charges from lower dimensional D-branes as well as a gas of open strings. We also note that our construction provides a new way of understanding the entropy of Reissner-Nordstrom black holes in the extremal limit.

Observational signatures from horizonless black shells imitating rotating black holes2018Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 7, artikel-id 070Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In arXiv:1705.10172 it was proposed that string theory replaces Schwarzschild black holes with horizonless thin shells with an AdS interior. In this paper we extend the analysis to slowly rotating black holes, solving the Israel-Lanczos-Sen junction conditions for a rotating shell composed of stringy matter to determine the metric. Outside of the shell we find a vacuum solution that differs from Kerr with a 32% larger quadrupole moment. We discuss the observational consequences and explore the possibility to distinguish between a black shell and a black hole. Promising methods include imaging of the black hole at the center of the Milky Way using the Event Horizon Telescope, precision measurements of stars in close orbits around the central black hole, and future observations of colliding super massive black holes using the space based gravitational wave observatory LISA.

Towards classical de Sitter solutions in string theory2009Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 9, s. 114-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We investigate the type II string effective potential at tree-level for de Sitter critical points. We derive necessary ingredients for having de Sitter solutions in orientifold models with fluxes. Furthermore, we examine some explicit O6 compactifications in IIA theory on manifolds with SU(3)-structure in the limit where the orientifold sources are smeared. In particular, we use a simple ten-dimensional Ansatz for four-dimensional de Sitter solutions and find the explicit criteria in terms of the torsion classes such that these de Sitter solutions solve the equations of motion. We have verified these torsion conditions for the cosets and the Iwasawa manifold and it turns out that the conditions cannot be fulfilled for these spaces. However this investigation allows us to find new non-supersymmetric AdS solutions for some cosets. It remains an open question whether there exist SU(3)-structure manifolds that satisfy the conditions on the torsion classes for the simple de Sitter solutions to exist.

Black holes in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime2009Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), ISSN 1126-6708, E-ISSN 1029-8479, nr 3, s. 070-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A model of 3 + 1 dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant coupled to abelian gauge fields has been proposed as a gravity dual for Lifshitz like critical phenomena in 2 + 1 dimensions. The finite temperature behavior is described by black holes that are asymptotic to the Lifshitz fixed point geometry. There is a one-parameter family of charged black holes, where the magnitude of the charge is uniquely determined by the black hole area. These black holes are thermodynamically stable and become extremal in the limit of vanishing size. The theory also has a discrete spectrum of localized objects described by non-singular spacetime geometries. The finite temperature behavior of Wilson loops is reminiscent of strongly coupled gauge theories in 3 + 1 dimensions, including screening at large distances.
