The discovery and development of topical medicines for wound healing2019In: Expert Opinion on Drug Discovery, ISSN 1746-0441, E-ISSN 1746-045X, Vol. 14, no 5, p. 485-497Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Chronic, nonhealing skin wounds claim >3% of the health-care budget in industrialized countries, and the incidence is rising. Currently, two parallel trends influence innovations within the field of wound healing: the need to reduce spread of antibiotic resistance and the emerging use of health economy and value-based models.Areas covered: This review focuses on the discovery of drug candidates and development of treatments aiming to enhance wound healing in the heterogeneous group of patients with nonhealing wounds.Expert opinion: Nonhealing wounds are multifaceted and recognized as difficult indications. The majority of products currently in use are medical device dressings, or concepts of negative pressure or hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Global best practice guidelines for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers recommend debridement, redressing, as well as infection control, and are critical to the lack of coherent clinical evidence for many approved products in active wound care. To accelerate wound healing, there is an emerging trend toward biologics, gene therapy, and novel concepts for drug delivery in research and in the pipeline for clinical trials. Scientific delineation of the therapeutic mechanism of action is, in our opinion, vital for clinical trial success and for an increased fraction of medical products in the pharmaceutical pipeline.

Anti-windup and Control of Systems with Multiple Input Saturations: Tools, Solutions and Case Studies2003Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Control of linear systems with saturating actuators are considered and anti-windup compensators for multiple-input multiple-output systems, and robust, almost time-optimal controllers for double integrators with input amplitude saturations, are proposed.

Windup effects are defined and anti-windup compensators aiming at minimizing the windup effects are proposed. The design is based on 1) linear quadratic (LQ) optimization techniques and 2) heuristic design using Nyquist-like techniques and pole-placement techniques.

A root-locus like technique that can, approximately, foretell possible directional problems that may be present in MIMO systems with input saturations, and that can be used for design of anti-windup compensators and for selection of appropriate static directional compensators, is proposed.

The problem of control of double integrators via saturating inputs is addressed and a robust piece-wise linear controller that gives almost time-optimal performance is suggested. It is shown that time optimal control of a double integrator via an input amplitude limiter, is equivalent to time-optimal control of a single integrator having a rate limiter at the input. One such application, concerning control of hydraulic cylinders in container crane systems, is presented. An extension of the controller, allowing synchronous control of two integrators with input rate limitations, is proposed.

    Abstract [en]

Ann Öhrberg, ”Fasa för all flärd, konstlan och förställning”. Den ideala retorn inom 1700-talets nya offentlighet (“Shy all vanity, art and dissimulation”. The ideal rhetor in the new public sphere of the 18th century)

In this essay Swedish cultures of politeness during the other half of the eighteenth century are explored with focus on rhetoric and gender. The dethronement of classical rhetoric in the eighteenth century has been associated with the formation of the public sphere and the communicative needs of the rising middle class. Cultures of politeness were crucial for this process. The point of departure in the essay is the ideological tension between classical civic rhetoric on the one hand and cultures of politeness on the other. The latter are found to be associated with ideals of femininity, and thus gendered in contrast to a classical rhetoric tradition. Materials are fetched from Sweden’s most influential learned societies: Tankebyggarorden, Utile Dulci, Apollini Sacra, Sällskapet Aurora, and Göteborgs Vetenskaps- och Vitterhets-Samhälle. The questions at hand are: Who were considered a suitable rhetor in the societies? What was seen as ideal eloquence and rhetoric? Analyses of speeches demonstrate how notions on ideal eloquence are intertwined with conceptions on national splendour and gender. The ideal rhetor combines naturalness and candid manliness with sensibility and the ability to tender friendship with other men. The rhetoric he uses harmonises with these characteristics. Elderly ideals of classical rhetoric are rejected, but yet sometimes used in practice.

Only 26 women were accepted as members in the societies under discussion. Three main reasons for their participation are identified. Firstly social grounds: women in early modern Sweden from the higher social strata were expected to appear in public. Secondly women were elected for patriotic reasons. Thirdly certain female qualities (sociability and sensibility) where seen as essential for the societies. Despite an originally positive attitude towards qualities being branded as feminine, women were gradually being marginalised and towards the end of the century the male rhetor alone occupies this public scene as well.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation deals with Swedish women writers during the so called Age of Libert y (1720 -1772 ).A total of 141 female authors of printed texts are presented, the majorit y unmentioned in earlier research. The study is focused on t wo forms of literature :occasional poetr y (poems that were written for special occasions such as weddings and f unerals)and political texts (general political texts as well as texts discussing women 's issues).A number of authors are discussed more thoroughly, for example the occasional poets Charlotta Frölich,Hedvig Paqvalin and Charlotta Löfgren, and a group of political authors, such as Sweden 's first female journalist,Anna Margareta von Bragner and t wo female members of the Gyllenborg family, that was part of the Swedish elite. Two chapters are devoted to Hedvig Charlotta Nordenflycht, one of Sweden 's most successf ul authors during the Age of Libert y.

The dissertation is based on gender theor y.A double approach is used:a sociological perspective is combined with rhetorical analysis. The sociological perspective reveals that women writers of ten played an active role in the public sphere, but they also met with great dif ficulties.Apart from legal and political restrictions, women were denied higher education. One important factor which favoured women writers 'activities was the old ideal of the noblewoman, still present in Sweden in the Age of Libert y,whereby women from the upper classes should be active in a variet y of ways, including participating in representative contexts. The social position of the writers is of utmost importance to explain why women writers could act the way they did.One major result in the investigation is that female political authors as well as occasional poets acted on behalf of their households and net works. The term "social obligation "is introduced for literature that was written mainly out of social purpose.Using a distinction bet ween power and authorit y one also can point out that although women writers had no formal or legal authorit y during this period, they could gain social authorit y and they did have power.

The rhetorical analyses of texts show that women writers were skilled in the art of rhetoric and also reveals that there are no significant dif ferences bet ween texts written by female authors if one compare with texts written by male authors. One explanation to this is the paradoxical nature of classical rhetoric :it had its roots in public life,to which women were denied access, nevertheless it was possible to learn rhetorical methods and techniques without higher education, for example by imitation.

Few women writers challenge existing gender-ideals in their texts. But on the other hand, only a handf ul of the texts written by female authors show signs of humilit y,and in these rare examples it is brought on by genre or social inferiorit y.Women writers did not apologize for their literar y activit y.And just by going public, they crossed the narrow boundaries that (on a symbolic and normative level)were commonly set for women.
