    Abstract [en]

    The boreal forest carbon balance is predicted to be particularly sensitive to climate change. Carbon balance estimates of these biomes stem mainly from eddy-covariance measurements of net ecosystem exchange (NEE). However, a full net ecosystem carbon balance (NECB) must include the lateral carbon export (LCE) through discharge. We show that annual LCE at a boreal forest site ranged from 4 to 28%, averaging 11% (standard deviation of 8%), of annual NEE over 13 years. Annual LCE and NEE are strongly anticorrelated; years with weak NEE coincide with high LCE. The decreased NEE in response to increased precipitation is caused by a reduction in the amount of incoming radiation caused by clouds. If our finding is also valid for other sites, it implies that increased precipitation at high latitudes may shift forest NECB in large areas of the boreal biome. Our results call for future analysis of this dual effect of precipitation on NEE and LCE.

    Trots uttalat jämställdhetsarbete syns inga tydliga förbättringar på toppositioner i den svenska företagsvärlden. Denna studie undersöker hur kvinnor kan avancera till toppositioner genom att studera ett företag som gått från manlig till kvinnlig dominans i styrelsen. Resultatet tyder på att de avgörande faktorerna för kvinnors karriäravancemang är graden av könsmedvetenhet, att tala om problemet, vilja till förändring, aktivt jämställdhetsarbete, kvinnliga förebilder och strukturer som främjar lika förutsättningar för män och kvinnor. Teorigenomgången svarar dels på varför kvinnor inte har kommit fram och dels på hur jämställdhet ska uppnås. Den här uppsatsen svarar på hur kvinnor har kommit fram och hur jämställdhet har uppnåtts, vilket är studiens teoretiska och framförallt praktiska bidrag.

    Kontorslösningar med olika typer av utrymmen, så kallade aktivitetsbaserade kontor, blir allt vanligare  bland  svenska  organisationer.  Utspridningen  av  denna  kontorstyp  är  mycket omstridd.  Tydligt  är  att  det  vanligen  pratas  om  ämnet  ur  ett  finansiellt  kostnadssparande perspektiv. I denna uppsats har en fallstudie av en organisation som har genomgått skiftet från ett  klassiskt  cellrumskontor  till  ett  aktivitetsbaserat  kontor.  Uppsatsen  söker  svar  på frågeställningen  Hur  påverkar  implementeringen  av  ett  aktivitetsbaserat  kontor  anställdas produktivitet?. För att undersöka hur produktiviteten har påverkats används en teoretisk modell som  visar  på  en  anställds  produktivitet  är  beroende  av  den  anställdes  välmående  på arbetsplatsen. Sex stycken intervjuer  har hållits och interna dokument från organisationen har varit del av underlaget. Studiens resultat visar på att implementeringen av ett aktivitetsbaserat kontor leder till en förbättring av de anställdas välmående på arbetet och därmed en förbättring i  produktiviteten.  Utöver  detta  framkommer  det  att  organisationen  kraftigt  har  minskat  sin kontorsyta  och  att  det  aktivitetsbaserade  kontoret  därmed  är  en  metod  för  att  spara  pengar. Dessutom har studien funnit att det är av stor vikt att ledarskapet inom en organisation förändras då organisationen går från en klassisk till en aktivitetsbaserad kontorsmiljö.

    Self-driving cars are soon to become a reality to the commercial market. A self-driving car does not have a human operator, which enables some interesting characteristics. The main benefits are considered to be:

    • The number of accidents and traffic jams should be reduced.
    • Enhanced comfort.
    • Energy usage could be decreased while capacity could be increased.

    This study concerns the causes for improved energy efficiency. The reason for improved energy efficiency is mainly because of the variation in terms of acceleration, braking and distance holding are reduced. The vehicles are more intelligent and can work together as a unity. There are reasons to believe that self-driving cars will first operate in highway conditions. The study has therefore tried to estimate what the potential benefits could be in terms of energy usage and capacity when comparing two sets of traffic flows in such an environment. One set of traffic flow was symbolized by self-driving cars, and one set was composed by conventional vehicles. With the settings and conditions defining the simulations in this study one can expect positive effects in both in energy usage and capacity with a traffic flow symbolized by self-driving cars. When comparing the two sets, with an increasing traffic flow from non-congestion up to congestion, the results showed energy savings around 10 percent with self-driving cars.

    Följsamhet till nyinsatt behandling med ACE-hämmare/angiotensin II-antagonister och kalciumantagonister

    Introduktion: Bristande följsamhet leder till ökad mortalitet och morbiditet. Detta innebär stora kostnader för samhället. Följsamheten till långtidsbehandlingar antas vara omkring 50 % i Sverige.

    Syfte: Att undersöka följsamheten till nyinsatt behandling med läkemedel inom ATC-grupperna C08 (kalciumantagonister) och C09 (ACE-hämmare och angiotensin II-antagonister)? Hur stor andel av läkemedelsanvändarna gör ett uttag respektive ≤4 uttag? Är det någon skillnad i följsamhet mellan användarna av läkemedel från ATC-grupp C08 och C09? Är det någon skillnad i följsamhet med avseende på kön och ålder?

    Material: Deltagarna var de som gjorde minst ett uttag av läkemedel inom ATC-grupperna C08 och C09 under perioden 2011-01-01 till 2011-02-28. Dessa personers ytterligare uttag inom respektive ATC-grupp registrerades under två år. Deltagarna sorterades med avseende på kön och ålder (≤44, 45-64, 65-74, ≥75). Uppgifterna hämtades från Socialstyrelsens läkemedelsregister. För att beräkna statistiska skillnader användes Pearsons chi-II-test. 

    Resultat: Ur ATC-grupp C08 var det 35,1 % av totalt 15584 personer som gjorde ≤4 uttag och 16,2 % gjorde endast ett uttag. Motsvarande resultat för ATC-grupp C09 var 23,7 % och 10,2 % av totalt 21484 personer. Kvinnor hade en signifikant högre andel som avslutade behandlingen än män. De yngsta och de äldsta hade en signifikant högre andel som avslutade behandlingen än de i åldrarna 45-64 och 65-74. Läkemedelsanvändarna i ATC-grupp C08 hade en signifikant högre andel som avslutade behandlingen än läkemedelsanvändarna i ATC-grupp C09.                      

    Konklusion: Ytterligare studier behövs som kan förklara varför följsamheten skiljer sig mellan olika åldrar och mellan användarna av läkemedel inom de båda ATC-grupperna. Nästan hälften av alla som avslutade en behandling i förtid gjorde det inom tre månader, d.v.s. efter endast ett uttag.

    Föreliggande uppsats ämnar studera hur pedagoger som arbetar inom förskolans resursavdelningar genom sitt tal konstruerar barnen i behov av särskilt stöd samt försöka förstå vilka konsekvenser en särskiljande praktik får för dessa konstruktioner. Studien är genomförd på tre resursavdelningar i en kommun i Sverige. Metoden som används i undersökningen är kvalitativa gruppintervjuer med arbetslag som fokusgrupper. Som underlag vid intervjuerna har frågeområden funnits men samtalen har tagit olika form beroende på vad informanterna har valt att lyfta. Det empiriska materialet har sedan analyserats med hjälp av en verktygslåda hämtad från kritisk diskursanalys. Resultaten tyder på att pedagogerna konstruerar barnen i behov av särskilt stöd utifrån kategorier kopplade till deras särskilda behov som t.ex. diagnoser. Vid talet om barnen i behov av särskilt stöd är det vanligare förekommande med begrepp hemmahörande i en medicinsk diskurs snarare än i en pedagogisk diskurs. Barnhabiliteringen ses som en viktig instans för att förstå vilket slags stöd barnen i behov av särskilt stöd behöver. Diskursen om barnet i behov av särskilt stöd reproduceras genom, för verksamheten, meningsbärande konstruktioner och utmanas då normen för dessa konstruktioner bryts.

    Today’s human rights are highly state-centred. The purpose of this thesis is to develop human rights theories by critically compare it with an obvious opposite: anarchism. The thesis presents three criteria, which a good human rights approach should meet. The aim is to study how well the current approach and an alternative anarchist approach meet these criteria of a good human rights approach. Hohfeld’s description of “rights” and “duties” is used to understand how a human-rights account possibly could function in a state-less world.

     

    The thesis concludes that within the current approach several challenges arise when states are the carrier of duties of the human rights. The obvious conclusion might be that the anarchistic state-less approach fails to meet the criteria for a good human rights approach, but the thesis shows that it is not that easy. Anarchism teaches us about other carrier of duties then states, which in some cases are to prefer. The thesis challenges the sovereign states with the help of anarchism. Furthermore the thesis shows that already today the growing global civil society is challenging the sovereign states by introducing other actors. The thesis do not intend to present an alternative solution for the human rights problems, instead the aim is to critically study things we take for granted by philosophical reflection.

    Abstract [en]

    Neuroendocrine tumors (NET´s) are often characterized by overproduction of peptide hormones. In spite of pronounced clinical symptoms, the tumor lesions can be small and difficult to detect. The general aim of this thesis was to investigate, in vitro and in vivo, some of the potential monoamine pathways present in NET´s, using radiolabeled tracers for positron emission tomography (PET), with the intention to explore the value of PET-imaging in the management of NET´s.

    We used the 11C-labeled serotonin precursor 5-hydroxy tryptophan (HTP) as the tracer for imaging of NET´s. More than 95% of the subjects displayed a high tracer uptake on PET and tumor detection rate with PET was higher in >50% of the patients compared both to computed tomography (CT) and somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS). The primary tumor was imaged by PET in 84% (16/19), compared to 47% and 42% for SRS and CT, respectively. Tumor visibility was better with PET due to a higher tumor-to-background ratio and a better spatial resolution. There was a strong correlation (r = .907) between changes in urinary-5-hydroxy indole acetic acid and changes in transport rate of 11C-5-HTP during treatment, indicating the use of PET in treatment monitoring of NET´s.

    Pretreatment with carbidopa decreased the urinary radioactivity concentration four-fold and significantly (p<0.001) increased the tumor tracer uptake. This greatly improved image interpretation and tumor lesion detection.

    A screening for expression of monoamine pathways in NET´s revealed a high in vitro binding of the monoamineoxidase-A ligand harmine to tumor sections. PET examinations with 11C-harmine could visualize tumors in all patients, including non-functioning endocrine pancreatic tumors (EPT´s).

    Finally, the in vitro turnover and in vivo distribution of the amino acids glutamate, glutamine and aspartate was investigated. Limited uptake in vivo indicates the lack of utility for these substances as PET-tracers for imaging and characterization of NET´s.

    Abstract [en]

    Background and Aims: A majority of neuroendocrine gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) tumors can be detected by conventional radiological methods and scintigraphic techniques. Still there are problems to visualize small tumor lesions and non-functioning tumors. The aim of this study was to investigate some of the monoamine processing pathways of neuroendocrine GEP-tumors and try to find a new tracer substance for in vivo characterization and visualization by Positron Emission Tomography (PET).

    Subjects and Methods: Autoradiography of tumor sections from 8 midgut carcinoids (MGC) and 8 endocrine pancreatic tumors (EPT) was performed with C-11-labeled tracers for serotonin and dopamine transporters, serotonin HT2A-, dopamine D1- and muscarinic receptors and for monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A). The in vitro results initiated PET studies with C-11-Harmine in 4 patients with MGC and 7 patients with EPT (one insulinoma, two glucagonomas and four non-functioning EPT).

    Results: The MAO-A-ligand Harmine expressed specific in vitro binding of 87 +/- 21% for MGC and 125 +/- 50% for EPT, compared to reference tissue (rat brain, 100%). All other substances showed relatively low specific binding. C-11-harmine-PET could visualize tumors in all patients. The mean standardized uptake value (SUV) for MGC was 7.5 +/- 3.9 and for EPT 12.9 +/- 2.7, whereas the SUV of normal liver, intestine and pancreas were 3.1 +/- 0.5, 3.4 +/- 1.2 and 8.9 +/- 3.0 respectively. Conclusions: This study demonstrates in vitro and in vivo that neuroendocrine GEP-tumors are characterized by a high MAO-A-expression, thereby adding to the similarities of neuronal and neuroendocrine tissue. It also indicates a possible application for C-11-harmine as a new PET-tracer for neuroendocrine GEP-tumors with the potential to visualize also non-functioning EPT's.

    Abstract [en]

    Positron emission tomography (PET) with 11C-labeled 5-hydroxytryptophane (5-HTP) is a sensitive technique to visualize neuroendocrine tumours (NETs), due to high intracellular uptake of amine-precursors like L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) and 5-HTP. NETs are often small and difficult to localize in spite of overt clinical symptoms due to hormonal excess. In our study, 38 consecutive NET patients underwent 11C-5-HTP-PET and morphological imaging by CT within 12 weeks prior to surgery. Surgical, histopathological and 5-HTP PET findings were correlated. 11C-5-HTP-PET corresponded to the surgical findings in 31 cases, was false negative in six, and true negative in one case resulting in 83.8% sensitivity and 100% specificity. Positive predicted value was 100%. In 11 patients 11C-5-HTP-PET was the only imaging method applied to localize the tumour. Thus, we could demonstrate that functional imaging by 11C-5-HTP-PET in many cases adds vital preoperative diagnostic information and in more than every fourth patient was the only imaging method that will guide the surgeon in finding the NET-lesion. Although the present results demonstrates that 11C-5-HTP may be used as an universal NET tracer, the sensitivity to visualize benign insulinomas and non functioning pancreatic NETs was lower.

    Background and Aims: A majority of neuroendocrine gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) tumors can be detected by conventional radiological methods and scintigraphic techniques. Still there are problems to visualize small tumor lesions and non-functioning tumors. The aim of this study was to investigate some of the monoamine processing pathways of neuroendocrine GEP-tumors and try to find a new tracer substance for in vivo characterization and visualization by Positron Emission Tomography (PET).

    Subjects and Methods: Autoradiography of tumor sections from 8 midgut carcinoids (MGC) and 8 endocrine pancreatic tumors (EPT) was performed with C-11-labeled tracers for serotonin and dopamine transporters, serotonin HT2A-, dopamine D1- and muscarinic receptors and for monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A). The in vitro results initiated PET studies with C-11-Harmine in 4 patients with MGC and 7 patients with EPT (one insulinoma, two glucagonomas and four non-functioning EPT).

    Results: The MAO-A-ligand Harmine expressed specific in vitro binding of 87 +/- 21% for MGC and 125 +/- 50% for EPT, compared to reference tissue (rat brain, 100%). All other substances showed relatively low specific binding. C-11-harmine-PET could visualize tumors in all patients. The mean standardized uptake value (SUV) for MGC was 7.5 +/- 3.9 and for EPT 12.9 +/- 2.7, whereas the SUV of normal liver, intestine and pancreas were 3.1 +/- 0.5, 3.4 +/- 1.2 and 8.9 +/- 3.0 respectively. Conclusions: This study demonstrates in vitro and in vivo that neuroendocrine GEP-tumors are characterized by a high MAO-A-expression, thereby adding to the similarities of neuronal and neuroendocrine tissue. It also indicates a possible application for C-11-harmine as a new PET-tracer for neuroendocrine GEP-tumors with the potential to visualize also non-functioning EPT's.

    PURPOSE: Positron emission tomography (PET) with 11C-5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) as tracer is a promising imaging instrument in the management of patients with neuroendocrine tumours (NETs). However, high radioactivity concentrations in the urinary collecting system sometimes produce image reconstruction artefacts that can make detection of small NETs difficult. As a means to decrease urinary excretion of radioactivity and thereby improve image quality, we examined the effect of pretreatment with carbidopa (CD), a peripheral inhibitor of aromatic amino acid decarboxylase (AADC), which converts 5-HTP to serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT). METHODS: Six patients with midgut carcinoid metastases were examined with 11C-5-HTP PET before and 1 h after oral administration of 100 or 200 mg of CD. RESULTS: There was a fourfold significant reduction of tracer uptake in the urinary collecting system after CD administration (p=0.0277, n=6), with a mean standard uptake value (SUV) of 155+/-195 before CD and 39+/-14 after CD. In tumour lesions there was a significant increase in SUV after CD administration (p<0. 0001, n=18), with a mean SUV of 11+/-3 before CD and 14+/-3 after CD. There was no difference between the doses (100 and 200 mg) of CD in this respect. In all patients, image interpretation and tumour detection were markedly improved after CD administration. CONCLUSION: We conclude that CD premedication improves 11C-5-HTP PET image quality and facilitates detection of NET lesions. Because of the similarity of metabolic pathways, this method could probably be applied to improve PET imaging using other tracers like 18F-DOPA and 11C-DOPA.

    PURPOSE:

    Carcinoid tumors, especially those of midgut origin, produce serotonin via the precursors tryptophan and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). We have evaluated the usefulness of positron emission tomography (PET) with carbon-11-labeled 5-HTP in the diagnosis and treatment follow-up evaluation of patients with neuroendocrine tumors.

    PATIENTS AND METHODS:

    PET using 11C-labeled 5-HTP was compared with computed tomography (CT) in 18 patients (14 midgut, one foregut, one hindgut carcinoid, and two endocrine pancreatic tumors [EPT]). In addition, 10 of 18 patients were monitored with PET examinations during treatment.

    RESULTS:

    All 18 patients, including two with normal urinary 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (U-5-HIAA), had increased uptake of 11C-labeled 5-HTP in tumorous tissue as compared with normal tissue. Liver metastases, as well as lymph node, pleural, and skeletal metastases, showed enhanced 5-HTP uptake and PET could detect more lesions than CT in 10 patients and equal numbers in the others. Tumor visibility was better for PET than for CT due to the high and selective uptake of 5-HTP with a high tumor-to-background ratio. Binding studies indicated an irreversible trapping of 5-HTP in the tumors. Linear regression analyses showed a clear correlation (r = .907) between changes in U-5-HIAA and changes in the transport rate constant for 5-HTP during treatment.

    CONCLUSION:

    PET with 11C-labeled 5-HTP demonstrated high uptake in neuroendocrine gastrointestinal tumors and thereby allowed improved visualization compared with CT. The in vivo data on regional tumor metabolism, as expressed in 11C-5-HTP uptake and transport rate, provided additional information over conventional radiologic techniques. The close correlation between the changes in 11C-5-HTP transport rate and U-HIAA during medical treatment indicates the potential of 11C-5-HTP-PET as a means to monitor therapy.

We show that the relative mutation rate and the "evolvability of fluoroquinolone resistance" are related by a power law slope of 1.2 over 3 orders of magnitude. Thus, even weak mutators can drive the evolution of fluoroquinolone resistance under selection pressure.

    Autosomal recessive hereditary spastic paraplegia (ARHSP) with thin corpus callosum (TCC) is genetically heterogenous and approximately 35% of patients carry mutations in either of the SPG11 or SPG15 genes. Disease onset is during the first three decades of life with spastic paraplegia and mental impairment. Peripheral neuropathy and amyotrophy may occur. Kjellin syndrome is characterized by central retinal degeneration in addition to ARHSP-TCC and the disease is associated with mutations in the SPG15 gene. We identified five patients in four unrelated kindreds with spastic paraplegia and mental impairment. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed TCC, atrophy elsewhere in the brain and increased T2 signal intensity in the periventricular white matter. Probands from the four kindreds were screened for mutations in the SPG11 gene. All patients were found homozygous or compound heterozygous for truncating SPG11 mutations of which four are reported for the first time. Ophthalmological investigations revealed that the four index cases have central retinal degeneration consistent with Kjellin syndrome. PET examinations with N-[11C-methyl]-L-deuterodeprenyl (DED) and fluor-18 2-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) were performed in two patients with Kjellin syndrome. We observed a reduced glucose uptake in the thalami, anterior cingulum, and sensorimotor cortex indicating neuronal loss, and an increased DED binding in the thalami and pons which suggests astrogliosis. From our results we extend the SPG11 associated phenotype to comprise also Kjellin syndrome, previously found to be associated with mutations in the SPG15 gene. We anticipate that degeneration of the central retina is a common and previously unrecognized feature in SPG11 related disease.

    A variety of chest physiotherapy techniques are used following abdominal and thoracic surgery to prevent or reduce post-operative complications. Breathing techniques with a positive expiratory pressure (PEP) are used to increase airway pressure and improve pulmonary function. No systematic review of the effects of PEP in surgery patients has been performed previously. The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the effect of PEP breathing after an open upper abdominal or thoracic surgery. A literature search of randomised-controlled trials (RCT) was performed in five databases. The trials included were systematically reviewed by two independent observers and critically assessed for methodological quality. We selected six RCT evaluating the PEP technique performed with a mechanical device in spontaneously breathing adult patients after abdominal or thoracic surgery via thoracotomy. The methodological quality score varied between 4 and 6 on the Physiotherapy Evidence Database score. The studies were published between 1979 and 1993. Only one of the included trials showed any positive effects of PEP compared to other breathing techniques. Today, there is scarce scientific evidence that PEP treatment is better than other physiotherapy breathing techniques in patients undergoing abdominal or thoracic surgery. There is a lack of studies investigating the effect of PEP over placebo or no physiotherapy treatment.

    Syftet med denna undersökning har varit att få ökad förståelse för hur några elever i grundskolans senare år uppfattar sin skapande förmåga i bildämnet samt vilken betydelse lärarens handledning kan ha för den skapande processen. Lärarens handledning har undersökts utifrån perspektiven handledning i form av uppmuntran och beröm, handledning som instruktioner, handledning som kritik samt att läraren lämnar utrymme för fritt skapande. Enligt läroplanen hör skapande förmåga, lust och kreativitet till det bildundervisningen skall utveckla hos eleven.  Det är alltså lärarens uppgift att bidra till undervisning som uppmuntrar eleverna till skapande förmåga. Datainsamlingsmetod har varit kvalitativa intervjuer med sex elever i årskurs nio. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att lärarens handledning har betydelse för elevernas skapande förmåga. Störst betydelse har lärarens instruerande handledning, men uppmuntran och beröm har även viktiga funktioner att fylla, som motivator och självförtroendehöjare, och bör ske parallellt med instruktioner. Mycket tyder på att negativ kritik, och även kritik som menas vara konstruktiv, kan påverka elevernas engagemang och självförtroende negativt i den skapande processen. Att eleven ges frihet i den skapande processen är betydelsefullt för att vägen till att vilja skapa ska öppnas, men friheten bör ges inom vissa ramar.

    The third main objective of the Convention on Biological Diversity aims to guarantee that the process of using traditional knowledge in research and development of new products is fair and equitable. The framework put in place for implementing this third objective, access and benefit sharing, is supposed to enable and ensure the participation of traditional knowledge holders. Using a qualitative study to examine two cases of access and benefit sharing, the TBGRI-Kani case and the Samoan-Mamala case, this thesis seeks to develop an understanding of how power structures affect these processes. Drawing on theories of participation, deliberation and social dominance the findings show that access and benefit sharing runs the risk of being an empty space controlled by the strongest actor, which in most cases are the receivers of traditional knowledge. Rather than celebrating the mere inclusion of traditional knowledge holders in the access and benefit sharing process, attention should be given to the hierarchies within the process as such.

    Då värdens yta är upp till 70 % täckt av vatten finns det stor potential för energigenerering av vattnets vågrörelser. Uppsala universitet har beställt denna rapport då de har en prototyp av vågkraftgenerator för att kunna ta tillvara denna energitillgång. Då den produktionsmetod som beställaren idag använder är både dyr och tidskrävande behöver industrirobotar introduceras i produktionen.

    Rapporten kommer att undersöka om möjlighet finns att producera det två gummibaserade ändstopp som linjärgeneratorn behöver. De produktionsmetoderna som kommer att behandlas är stansning, vattenskärning och fräsning av EPDM Duro 65. Då kostnaderna har hög prioritering är den industrirobot som produktionsmetoden ska utföras med av en 23 år gammal modell.

    Rapporten kommer även att presentera ett färdigt förslag för att direkt kunna implementeras in i produktionen. Detta om resultatet uppnår de specifikationer som produktionsmetoden måste uppfylla för att kunna implementeras. Den kommer även att göra en ekonomisk beräkning för att se om projektet kan ha ett ekonomiskt intresse för beställaren. Rapporten kommer slutligen att ge förslag för fortsatta studier.

    Abstract [en]

    Quasars form one of the most energetic phenomena in the universe, and can be traced out to very large redshifts. By studying the galaxies which host the active nuclei, important insights can be gained into the processes that trigger and maintain the quasar powerhouse. The evolution rate of the quasar population is furthermore similar to that of ordinary galaxies, which implies a connection between black hole accretion and star formation in the host galaxies. While the properties of quasar host galaxies at low redshift have become better constrained in recent years, less is known about hosts at earlier cosmic epochs. In addition, though radio-quiet quasars are by far more common than their radio-loud counterparts their host galaxies have not been studied to the same extent, in particular not at higher redshifts.

    An imaging campaign of a large sample of quasars at intermediate redshift (0.4 < z < 0.8) was carried out at optical wavelengths using the Nordic Optical Telescope, and is studied in this thesis together with two smaller samples. The joint material forms more than half of the total number of observed sources in this redshift interval and increases the number of resolved radio-quiet hosts at z>0.4 considerably. The morphology and mean magnitudes are found to be similar for radio-loud and radio-quiet host galaxies. Both types of host are shown to have optical colours as blue as those of present-day late-type spirals and starburst galaxies, which is likely the result of ongoing star formation.

    With increasing redshift, observations of host galaxies become more difficult. High spatial resolution can be achieved with adaptive optics, but the variation of the point spread function in the near-infrared wavelength band which is most suited for detection is large and rapid. A statistical approach to the problem of characterizing the point spread function has been developed, making use of simulated objects which are matched to the different atmospheric conditions. Bright, compact host galaxies showing signs of merging and interaction were detected in this way for three quasars at z~2.2, which were observed with the ESO 3.6 m telescope. The method is not restricted to host galaxy analysis but can be utilized in other applications as well, provided that the underlying extended source can be described by an analytical model.

    Background. The inequalities in health is a global problem and needs to be addressed from many levels. School is an important arena where a lot of health promotion can be implemented. Failing school can lead to week living conditions which in turn can lead to poor health. The socioeconomic perspective is an important factor that emerges in the work around inequalities in health.

    Aim. To investigate school health nurses health challenges from a socioeconomic perspective.

    Design. A descriptive, qualitative study with deductive frame.

    Method. The study is based on eight structured interviews in Uppsala municipality. All school health nurses participated voluntary. The interview guide was based on 27 semi-structured questions. The data from the interviews has been analysed by a qualitative content analysis. Bronfenbrenners ecological systems theory has been used as a theoretical framework.

    Results. The results show that health challenges from a socioeconomic perspective is a very complex area. The work of school health nurses varies but they all cooperate with many different professions. Mental health problems and physical inactivity emerges as the clearest health challenges and is present regardless of socioeconomic status or structure. The study shows that the composition of the students which have lower socioeconomic structure gives higher work load for the school health nurse.

    Conclusions. The study shows that more research needs to be done in order to increase the knowledges about inequalities in health. By increasing the knowledges resources can be distributed in an equal way and inequalities in health can be levelled up, especially for adolescents.

    Nils Rosén (von Rosenstein) (1706–73), Professor of medicine at Uppsala University, is less known than his colleague Linnaeus, but has, mainly through his textbook Underrättelser om Barn-Sjukdomar (1st monograph ed. 1764), had an enormous influence on the care of children throughout Europe.

    In this thesis, four Latin dissertations, put forth under the presidency of Nils Rosén, are edited, with translation, commentary, and introduction. These dissertations quite clearly represent the latest medical knowledge of the mid 18th century, and recent theories are propounded, discussed, and examined against practical and empirical knowledge; the texts are thus representative examples of the kind of academic dissertations that communicated and discussed relevant factual matter as opposed to those that just constituted an amount of text, suitable for elaborating on during the disputational ceremony.

    In my introduction, I mainly concentrate on medical and pharmacological technical terminology, but more general aspects on scholarly and scientific Neo-Latin are also dealt with. The dissertations edited are De variolis praecavendis (1751), De variolis curandis (1754), both treating smallpox; De epilepsia infantili (1754), on children’s epilepsy, and De morbis infantum (1752), dealing with the health care of children in genere, and interesting as an early Latin version of parts of Underrättelser.

    This thesis examines the application of Article 15(c) of the Directive 2011/95/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 December 2011 on Standards for the Qualification of Third-Country Nationals or Stateless Persons as Beneficiaries of International Protection (the Qualification Directive). It uses a concept of ‘rule of law’ theory to examine and discuss what kind of difficulties that the application of Article 15(c) poses for the rule of law. Two different aspects of the rule of law are examined in relation to the aforementioned article of the Qualification Directive to determine what impact the article has on the rule of law in the European Union.

    One is the principle of legal certainty in relation to that the text of the provision is worded poorly for application by the relevant national authorities in the European Union Member States where it can be seen through the analysis of previous writings on the topic that the wording of Article 15(c) in fact does impact the rule of law and possibility to guarantee legal certainty for the individual applying for international protection.

    The second aspect of the rule of law that is examined in the principle of fairness or more specifically the principle of procedural fairness. It is shown through the research and analysis that the principle of procedural fairness is of utmost importance to uphold when dealing with decision-making in asylum matters and that Article 15(c) as it stands today is detrimental to the upholding of the principle in the European Union.
