Kost, kön och prestation: En studie om årskurs nio elevers kostvanor i olika inkomstområden2010Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is a comparative study of the occurrence and function of information literacy in the curricula of the Swedish and Bavarian Gymnasium and investigates the occurrence of the term ”information literacy” and shows through what other linguistic means the notion of information literacy is expressed in the curricula. The study also wishes to analyze how the notion of information literacy manifests itself in the different school systems. Relevant textual passages of both curricula are compared to each other through the theoretic lens of Bruce’s phenomenographic model of information literacy. This study shows that although the term of ”information literacy” is absent in the analyzed texts several other terms are used in both curricula to express similar notions.

The study further shows that although all seven of Bruce’s conceptions of information literacy are represented in the curricula some major differences exist between the two educational systems. Thus the analysis shows differences in the use of information technology which in the Swedish curriculum is seen as an educational goal in the individual subjects whereas according to the Bavarian curriculum training in the use of information technology takes place in the subject of Informatik. Other differences concerning information literacy are shown through the notion of the control concept. Here it is shown that in the Bavarian curriculum emphasis has been put on the training of the memory capacity of the student as a form of information organization. Bruce’s wisdom conception is further used to show that the Bavarian curriculum emphasizes the use of subject knowledge for democratic purposes. This is shown most clearly in the syllabi of the humanities to be seen.

Through the use of Bruce’s conceptions it can also be shown that both in a Swedish and a Bavarian context information retrieval is partly absent in the natural science syllabi, whereas it plays a major part in the syllabi of the humanities. This can be connected to a common lack of faith in the value of information retrieval in the natural sciences. This is a two years master’s thesis in library and information science.

Long-term retention of neurotoxic ß-carbolines in brain neuromelanin2003In: Journal of neural transmission, ISSN 0300-9564, E-ISSN 1435-1463, Vol. 111, no 2, p. 141-157Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

beta-Carbolines show structural resemblance to the neurotoxic N-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine and are metabolized to mitochondrial toxicants. Humans are continuously exposed to low levels of beta-carbolines through cooked food, coffee, alcoholic beverages and tobacco smoke. beta-Carbolines have previously been detected in higher levels in the pigmented substantia nigra than in the cortex of humans. The distribution of 3H-labelled harman and norharman in the brain of pigmented and albino mice and in frogs (a species having neuromelanin) was studied by tape-section and light-microscopic autoradiography. Furthermore, the binding of these beta-carbolines to dopamine-melanin and melanin granules from Sepia officinalis was examined. The results revealed a high affinity binding to melanin and a long-term retention (up to 30 days) in pigmented tissues, including neuromelanin-containing neurons of frogs after a single injection. The role of long-term exposure to food-related beta-carbolines and a retention of these compounds in pigment-containing neurons in the induction of idiopathic Parkinson's disease should be further considered.

Selective Retention of β-Carbolines and 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene in the Brain: Role of Neuromelanin and Cytochrome P450 for Toxicity2005Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The ß-carbolines norharman and harman structurally resemble the synthetic compound 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) that is known for its ability to damage neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and thereby induce parkinsonism. MPTP is, however, not normally present in the environment whereas the ß-carbolines are present in cooked food and tobacco smoke.

In this thesis it was demonstrated that norharman and harman had affinity to melanin and were retained in neuromelanin-containing neurons of frogs up to 30 days post-injection (the longest survival time examined). It was also demonstrated that norharman induced neurodegeneration, activation of glia cells and motor impairment in mice. Furthermore, this compound induced ER stress and cell death in PC12 cells. An in vitro model of dopamine melanin-loaded PC12 cells was developed in order to study the effect of melanin on norharman-induced toxicity. In this model, melanin seemed to attenuate toxicity induced by low concentrations of norharman. After exposure to the highest concentration of norharman, melanin clusters were disaggregated and there was an increased expression of stress proteins and caspases-3, known to be involved in apoptosis.

The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene was demonstrated to have a CYP1A1-dependent localization in endothelial cells in the choroid plexus, in the veins in the leptomeninges and in the cerebral veins of mice pre-treated with CYP1-inducers.

These results demonstrate that the distribution of environmental compounds could be influenced by the presence of neuromelanin and expression of CYP enzymes in the brain and that norharman may induce neurotoxic effects in vivo and in vitro.

The beta-carboline norharman is present in cooked food and tobacco smoke and show structural resemblance to the neurotoxicant 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine. C57BL/6 mice were injected subcutaneously with norharman (3 and 10 mg/kg) twice per day for five consecutive days. Eighteen hours after the last dose an increased expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein and fluoro-jade staining were demonstrated whereas the number of tyrosine hydroxylase positive cells were unchanged in the substantia nigra. Two weeks after the last treatment a decreased motor activity was observed whereas cognitive functions remained intact. In cultured PC12 cells norharman treatment induced mitochondrial dysfunction and increased the number of caspase-3 and TUNEL-positive cells. The results demonstrate that norharman induced apoptosis in cultured cells as well as early neurodegeneration, glial activation and sustained motor deficits in mice and suggest that exposure to norharman may contribute to idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

    Abstract [en]

The most conspicuous feature in idiopathic parkinsonism is the degeneration of pigmented neurons in the substantia nigra. A major problem for the study of the significance of neuromelanin for the development of parkinsonism is that common experimental animals lack neuromelanin in substantia nigra. The aim of this study was to develop an in vitro model that could be used to study the role of neuromelanin in chemically induced toxicity in dopaminergic cells. Cultured neuron-like PC12 cells were exposed to synthetic dopamine melanin (0-1.0 mg/ml) for 48 h, resulting in uptake of dopamine melanin particles into the cells. The intracellular distribution of dopamine melanin granules was similar to that found in neuromelanin-containing neurons. Dopamine melanin, up to 0.5 mg/ml, had negligible effects on ultrastructure, induction of the endoplasmic reticulum-stress protein glucose regulating protein 78, activation of caspase-3 and cell viability. The decreased cell viability in response to the cytotoxic peptide amyloid-beta25-35 was similar in melanin-loaded cells and in control cells without melanin. The results of the studies suggest that melanin-loaded PC12 cells can serve as an in vitro model for studies on the role of neuromelanin for the toxicity of chemicals, in particular neurotoxicants with melanin affinity, in pigmented neurons.

    Abstract [en]

The food contaminant norharman structurally resembles MPTP a compound that selectively damages pigmented brain areas. Both compounds are sequestered and retained in melanin-containing neurons. The aim of the study was to examine whether intracellular melanin can modulate the toxicity of norharman in melanin-loaded PC12 cells. Dopamine melanin protected against norharman-induced upregulation of grp78, activation of caspase 3 and necrosis at low concentrations (5 and 50 µM). In contrast, at a high conentration (500 µM) there was a significantly increased expression of grp78, hsp90 and caspase and a disassociation of melanin aggregates and dispersal of melanin granules to swollen neurite terminals. In human populations, a long-term low-level exposure to toxicants with a high affinity to melanin will probably result in accumulation in melanin-containing neurons in vivo. Our data suggest that accumulation of a neurotoxicant in melanin-loaded cells may lead to increased cell stress, apoptotic signaling and disassociation of melanin aggregates.

    Abstract [en]

Immunohistochemistry and autoradiography were used to identify sites of the cytochrome P450 enzymes (P450) 1A1 and 1B1 expression and activation of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA), in the brain of rodents pretreated with the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonists beta-naphthoflavone (BNF), 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl or vehicle. Immunohistochemistry revealed that CYP1A1 was preferentially induced in endothelial cells (EC) in the choroid plexus, in veins in the leptomeninges, and in cerebral veins of AhR agonist-pretreated mice. No induction occurred in cerebral capillary EC. In vehicle-treated mice no localization of CYP1A1 in EC was observed. CYP1B1 was expressed in smooth muscle cells of arteries in the leptomeninges, in cerebral arteries/arterioles and to a low extent in ependymal cells of AhR agonist- and vehicle-treated mice. No CYP1B1 was detected in capillary loops of the choroid plexus or in cerebral capillaries. Following administration of [(3)H]DMBA to BNF-pretreated mice, a marked irreversible binding in EC of the choroid plexus and of veins in the leptomeninges was observed but not in cerebral capillaries. In vehicle-treated mice, there was no [(3)H]DMBA-binding at these sites. Furthermore, a high level of irreversibly bound [(3)H]DMBA occurred in EC at these sites in precision-cut mouse/rat brain slices and in excised blood-brain interfaces incubated with [(3)H]DMBA. Since [(3)H]DMBA binding sites corresponded with the sites of CYP1A1 induction, we conclude that rodents express a constitutively low but highly inducible and functional CYP1A1 in EC of some of the blood-brain interfaces. The role of CYP1A1/1B1 and environmental pollutants in the etiology of cerebrovascular disease needs further consideration.

Dopamine melanin-loaded PC12 cells: A model for studies on pigmented neurons of substantia nigra2005In: Pigment Cell Research, ISSN 1755-1471, E-ISSN 1755-148X, Vol. 18, no 4, p. 306-314Article in journal (Refereed)

The purpose of this essay is to explore school librarians view on junior high school students literacy and approaches to promoting reading in the school library. My main focus is to identify what norms and values that are made visible in the school librariens description of a junior high school student literacy and a junior high school student as a reading subject. The empircal study is based on qualitative interviews with five school librarians from Stocholm county. Social constructivism is used as a theoretical framework in the analysis and different theroretical tools within critical discourse theory, Bourdieus theory of power positions in the social field and literacy as social practise. Three main discourses were identified in the analysis; the reading discourse, the school librarian discourse and the norm critical discourse. All of these discourses overlap and influence each other. In the reading discourse the junior high school student is constructed as a ”reader” or a ”non-reader” and the construction of literacy is based upon a traditional view of literacy in school as educative. The school librarian discourse construct the role of the school librarian as inferior in relation to the teacher role in the classroom. In the norm critical discourse a definition of the term norm critical is limited to a LGBT and gender perspective, leaving out other perspectives such as class, ethnicity and disabillity. The school librarian construct an image of a junior high school student and a junior high school student literacy based on schools socioeconomic area. The segregation in the swedish school system is made visable in the descriptions of the different conditions of each school library and it is difficult to disregard this inequality when it comes to school librarians working conditions and the effect that it might have on junior high school students reading and literacy in school.

Adoptionen av mobila betalningssätt i Sverige2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Cash payments is steadily decreasing today in sweden while at the same time  contactless and mobile payment methods are steadily increasing. 2017 was the first year the use of mobile payment methods surpassed the use of cash and the same year the majority stopped carrying cash on hand. The release of NFC/RFID based mobile payment methods like Samsung and Apple Pay may be the next step towards a cashless society. With the already developed and popular payment methods in Sweden like Swish and contactless credit cards the trends observed in the rest of europe may differ from Sweden’s. There is a lack of research in how swedish users perceive mobile payment methods and what factors influence their decisions of a potential adoption. This study aims to evaluate what factors influence swedish users and how these factors affect the potential adoption of mobile payment methods.  The study has conducted a qualitative approach gathering data from four interviews with swedish nonusers of the technology. The analysis is based on Rogers’s innovation diffusion theory (IDT). 9 factors that influence swedish users were found. These are, ignorance, benefit, simplicity, supporting infrastructure, security and risks, integrity, trust, social influences, and alternative payment methods. The factors influence the potential adoption in a positive or a negative way. Compatibility, complexity and communication channels was identified to affect the adoption in a mostly positive way  while benefit, testability and observability were mostly negative.

    Abstract [sv]

Livskvalitet hos patienter med nydiagnostiserad bestående perifer facialispares2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Peripheral facial palsy is caused by a damage on the facial nerve. The condition brings a lot of functional limitations and include physical, psychological and social function. For patients suffering from peripheral facial palsy, the loss of these functions affects the quality of life. The condition can not be cured, the treatment goal is therefore to reduce symptoms by recreating symmetry and function. There is a lot of different treatment options. To evaluate if facial palsy treatment can reduce symptoms and give a higher valued quality of life, the patients quality of life initially needs to be valued before treatment. This was the aim of the study. As a method, a quantitative approach was used, data collections consisted of two patient-reported outcome measures, Facial disability index (FDI) and Facial Clinimetric Evaluation (FaCE) scale. The instruments are validated and developed to measure quality of life in peripheral facial paralysis patients. The scores were transformed into a 100-point interval scale where the lowest value indicates severe paralysis, and the highest value indicates normal facial function. For physical function the mean value is 53,7. The social/well-being function shows a mean value of 64. The functions of facial movement, facial comfort, oral function, eye comfort, lacrimal control and social function show mean values of 50 or lower. Facial movement was the lowest scored function (mean= 20,6). The total of FaCE scale questionnaire declares a mean value of 36,8. A significant positive correlation was seen between physical function and social/well-being function (r = 0,55, p < 0,05). The result shows a positive correlation between several subscales in FDI and FaCE scale. The strongest correlation was seen between physical function (FDI) and facial comfort (FaCE scale) (r = 0,73, p < 0,05).

Conclusion: The result highlights a general low quality of life in newly diagnosed facial palsy patients.

Identification of MYCN and SOX9 target genes and a study of drug treatment effects in medulloblastoma2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most common malignant brain tumor affecting children. The transcription factors MYCN and SOX9 are associated with initiation, maintenance and recurrence of MB and are also connected to more aggressive tumors. In this study, a ChIP was performed to isolate DNA from genes that are transcriptionally regulated by these proteins. Identification of these target genes will reveal new potential drug targets and help us better understand the functions of MYCN and SOX9. The ChIP was not fully optimized during this project and the target genes were not sent for sequencing and identified. To study the connection between SOX9 and recurrence, cells with different levels of SOX9 were treated with drugs, after which cell viability was measured. No significant difference in resistance could be measured. Change in expression level of MYCN, SOX9 and other relevant genes after drug treatment was also studied. The results show an increase in SOX9 and HES1, suggesting that these genes are involved in tumor recurrence.

    Abstract [sv]

Flywheel energy storage: a conceptucal study2011Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master thesis was provided by ABB Cooperate Research in Västerås. This study has two major purposes: (1) to identify the characteristics of a flywheel energy storage system (FESS), (2) take the first steps in the development of a simulation model of a FESS.

For the first part of this master thesis a literature reviews was conducted with focus on energy storage technologies in general and FESS in particular. The model was developed in the simulation environment PSCAD/EMTDC; with the main purpose to provide working model for future studies of the electrical dynamics of a flywheel energy storage system.

The main conclusion of the literature review was that FESS is a promising energy storage solution; up to multiple megawatt scale. However, few large scale installations have so far been built and it is not a mature technology. Therefore further research and development is needed in multiple areas, including high strength composite materials, magnetic bearings and electrical machines. The model was implemented with the necessary control system and tested in a simulation case showing the operational characteristics.

Ett kvinnligt nätverk på en manlig arbetsplats: En studie om jämställdhetsarbete i en mansdominerad organisation2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Varför köper svenska företag tillbaka egna aktier?2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The Art of Diversifying an Investment Portfolio with Art2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The paper discusses art as an alternative tool for portfolio diversification. As interdependence between the financial markets is growing and asset correlations are increasing, it becomes difficult to build a well-diversified investment portfolio. Our purpose is to find out if art could be used as an alternative portfolio diversifier. We examine the art and stock markets of Sweden in terms of correlation, risk and return. As market measures, we use the SIX Return Index and our constructed hedonic art price index, based on 2,966 observations from the Swedish auction market during the period between 2009 and 2016. The results show no significant correlation between the markets. In comparison with the stock market, the art market appears to be less profitable and more volatile. Considering that art still provides positive return, we conclude that art can be used for portfolio diversification purposes.

Increased expression of heparanase in symptomatic carotid atherosclerosis2013In: Atherosclerosis, ISSN 0021-9150, E-ISSN 1879-1484, Vol. 226, no 1, p. 67-73Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: Proliferation of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) can stabilize atherosclerotic lesions but the molecular mechanisms that regulate this process in humans are largely unknown. We have previously shown that heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs), such as perlecan, regulate SMC growth in animal models by modulating heparin-binding mitogens. Since perlecan is expressed at low levels in human atherosclerosis, we speculated that the effect of heparan sulfate (HS) in human disease was rather influenced by HS degradation and investigated the expression of heparanase (HPSE) in human carotid endarterectomies. Methods and results: Gene expression analysis from 127 endarterectomies in the BiKE database revealed increased expression of HPSE in carotid plaques compared with normal arteries, and a further elevation in symptomatic lesions. Increased HPSE protein expression in symptomatic plaque tissue was verified by tissue microarrays. HPSE mRNA levels correlated positively with expression of inflammatory markers IL-18, RANTES and IL-1β, and also T-cell co-stimulatory molecules, such as B7.2, CD28, LFA-1 and 4-1BB. Previously reported single nucleotide polymorphisms within HPSE were associated with differential mRNA expression in plaques. Immunohistochemistry revealed that inflammatory cells were major producers of HPSE in plaque tissue. HPSE immunoreactivity was also observed in SMCs adjacent to the necrotic core and was co-localized to deposits of fibrin. Conclusions: This study demonstrates increased expression of HPSE in human atherosclerosis associated with inflammation, coagulation and plaque instability. Since HS can regulate SMC proliferation and influence plaque stability, the findings suggest that HPSE degradation of HS take part in the regulation of SMC function in human atherosclerosis.

Improvisation i folkmusik?: En svensk folkmusiker improviserar: Mats Edén i Norafjälls2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Cecilia Österholm: Improvisation i folkmusik? En svensk folkmusiker improviserar: Mats Edén i Norafjälls. C-uppsats.

Handling the dilemma of self-determination and dementia: A study of case managers’ discursive strategies in assessment meetings.2015In: Journal of gerontological social work, ISSN 0163-4372, E-ISSN 1540-4048, Vol. 58, no 6, p. 613-636Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In assessment meetings concerning care services for people with dementia, Swedish case managers face a dilemma. On the one hand, according to the law, the right to self-determination of every adult citizen must be respected, but on the other hand cognitive disabilities make it difficult to fulfill obligations of being a full-fledged citizen. In this article, we examine 15 assessment meetings to identify discursive strategies used by case managers to handle this dilemma. We also examine how these affect the participation of persons with dementia, and indicate implications of our study for social work practice and research.

    Abstract [en]

Girlhood is a recurring theme and problem in contemporary Swedish and Finland Swedish literature. The writings of Monika Fagerholm, Mare Kandre and Inger Edelfeldt and many other authors are full of girls not wanting or not being able to be Proper Girls. This dissertation, its thinking and writing, is inspired by a wide range of feminist, queer and aesthetic theory, focusing on femininity. A crucial point of departure is the collaboration between literature and theory and especially how literature can be seen as theory and a way of creating knowledge. The dissertation explores some of the notions of femininity in literature from 1980 to 2005, using a variation, hybrid and/or translation of queer - skev in Swedish. The word skev draws on the original meaning of queer, strange or twisted; its coinage was influenced by Norwegian and Danish attempts to translate queer. Skev illuminates forms of normativity not strictly tied to sexual desire – taking queer one step further but also back to the original meaning of the word. The term gurlesque is another way of thinking about and beyond proper girlhoods. Gurlesque is a mix of feminism, femininity, the cute, the disgusting and the grotesque. The literary girls are opening up spaces for trying to think femininity beyond the heteronormative order, about girls comparing, desiring, and twisting each other and other forms of girlhoods. Skev is not a category or a label you can easily put on a literary girl. Even the girls that seem to be proper and behave accordingly turn out to be uncomfortable and rebellious in many senses.

    Abstract [en]

Inflation forecast uncertainty is of importance for a wide range of agents in the economy, central banks in particular. Ways to describe and account for this uncertainty in a consistent manner have received increasing attention of late, in part due to the growing number of inflation-targeting central banks. This article develops a large structural VAR for the Swedish economy and estimates it in a Bayesian framework. The methodology permits not only structural interpretation and analysis but offers a natural way to formalize forecast uncertainty, as the posterior predictive density from the model has the interpretation of a fan chart.

Can forecasting performance be improved by considering the steady state?: An application to Swedish inflation and interest rate2008In: Journal of Forecasting, ISSN 0277-6693, E-ISSN 1099-131X, Vol. 27, no 1, p. 41-51Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates whether the forecasting performance of Bayesian autoregressive and vector autoregressive models can be improved by incorporating prior beliefs on the steady state of the time series in the system. Traditional methodology is compared to the new framework-in which a mean-adjusted form of the models is employed-by estimating the models on Swedish inflation and interest rate data from 1980 to 2004. Results show that the out-of-sample forecasting ability of the models is practically unchanged for inflation but significantly improved for the interest rate when informative prior distributions on the steady state are provided. The findings in this paper imply that this new methodology could be useful since it allows us to sharpen our forecasts in the presence of potential pitfalls such as near unit root processes and structural breaks, in particular when relying on small samples.

Incorporating Judgement in Fan Charts2006Report (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

Within a decision-making group, such as the monetary-policy committee of a central bank, group members often hold differing views about the future of key economic variables. Such differences of opinion can be thought of as reflecting differing sets of judgement. This paper suggests modelling each agent’s judgement as one scenario in a macroeconomic model. Each judgement set has a specific dynamic impact on the system, and accordingly, a particular predictive density – or fan chart – associated with it. A weighted linear combination of the predictive densities yields a final predictive density that correctly reflects the uncertainty perceived by the agents generating the forecast. In a model-based environment, this framework allows judgement to be incorporated into fan charts in a formalised manner.

Killing Four Unit Root Birds in the US Economy with Three Panel Unit Root Test Stones2004In: Applied Economics Letters, Vol. 11, no 4, p. 213-216Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study tests for the presence of unit roots in four US macroeconomic time series using panel unit root tests. The Im, Pesaran and Shin (Journal of Econometrics, 115, pp. 53–74, 2003) test, the Multivariate Augmented Dickey-Fuller test (Taylor and Sarno, Journal of International Economics, 46, pp. 281–312, 1998) and the Johansen (Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, 12, pp. 231–54, 1988) likelihood ratio test are applied to unemployment, the real exchange rate, the nominal interest rate and inflation. The three tests all have ways of controlling the obvious cross-sectional dependence in the panel. Using monthly data from 1960 to 2002 there is evidence that all time series are generated by stationary processes.

Mean Reversion in Swedish Macroeconomic Time Series - Evidence Using a New Panel Data Approach2004In: European Review of Economics and Finance, Vol. 3, no 4, p. 23-36Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The presence or absence of unit roots in a time series can be used to test the validity of a number of economic hypotheses and the persistence of economic time series therefore receives a fair amount of attention. This paper tests for the presence of unit roots in four time series of major interest to the Swedish macro economy. The time series properties of the real exchange rate, the nominal interest rate, inflation and unemployment are investigated using both traditional univariate unit root tests and panel unit root tests in a new panel setting. It is well known that there is power to be gained when testing for unit roots by using a panel setting. By applying two different panel unit root tests - the frequently used Im, Pesaran and Shin (2003) and the less used, but potentially highly informative, Johansen (1988) likelihood ratio test - the drawbacks of panel unit root tests, such as formulation of null and alternative hypothesis and the common assumption of cross-sectional independence, are also addressed in this study. Applying the tests to monthly data from 1972 to 2003, the panel unit root tests provide strong evidence that all four time series are stationary-processes.

Size Properties of Cointegration Tests in Misspecified Systems2004In: Applied Economics Letters, Vol. 11, no 15, p. 919-924Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The small sample size properties of three frequently used cointegration tests when a system has been misspecified are investigated. Specifically, the misspecification consists of one relevant variable being omitted from a system with one cointegrating vector. A Monte Carlo study shows that the Johansen (1991) trace test, adjusted by a simple finite sample correction, has the most robust behaviour when lag length in the test equations is chosen according to traditional information criteria.
