    Studien syftar till att undersöka vilka metoder fem verksamma lärare i Uppsala kommun använder för att tillmötesgå högpresterande och särbegåvade elevers behov i klassrummet, vilka svårigheter lärarna finner med nivåanpassningar samt vilket stöd de skulle önska för att kunna bemöta starka elever bättre. Intresset att undersöka understimulerade elevers situation i skolan kommer från personliga upplevelser och erfarenheter av att dessa elever hamnar i skymundan i klassrumsmiljön medan mycket resurser läggs på inlärningssvaga elever. En översikt av publicerad forskning visar på riskerna med att inte uppmärksamma särbegåvade elever på rätt sätt och ger förslag på hur särbegåvade elever kan stöttas.

     

    Studiens material samlades in genom observationer och intervjuer med fem lärare i Uppsala kommun. Datan analyserades därefter utifrån ett sociokulturellt perspektiv och med särskild utgångspunkt från teorin om den proximala utvecklingszonen.

     

    Resultatet visar att samtliga lärare som deltagit i studien inte känner att de har några nämnvärda svårigheter att bemöta de högpresterande eleverna i undervisningen. Lärarna finner det snarare problematiskt att finna tid att ta fram rätt material samt att hitta källor där konkret material finns. Lärarna är medvetna om vad eleverna behöver och hur de ska kunna tillmötesgå dem. Den mest frekvent nämnda metoden är fördjupningsuppgifter vilka ämnar att bredda elevernas kunskaper i det aktuella ämnet. En annan vanlig metod är öppna uppgifter där eleverna får möjlighet att utveckla och motivera sina lösningar efter egen förmåga.

    Abstract [sv]

    Syftet med uppsatsen var att undersöka hur identiteten “invandrare” konstrueras, samt vilka diskurser kring “invandrare” som framträder, i svenska nyhetsmedier under mars månad 2017. Vi ämnar belysa hur den aktuella diskursen ser ut. Då vi lever i en alltmer globaliserad värld där vi interagerar med människor från andra kulturer blir det än viktigare att vara medveten om hur diskurser kring andra människor förs. Med hjälp av diskursanalys, i kombination med en kvalitativ och socialkonstruktivistisk ansats, tillsammans med postkolonialism och orientalism samt gestaltningsteorin, har vi analyserat 19 artiklar som publicerades under mars 2017 i Aftonbladet och Dagens Nyheter. I resultatet besvaras frågeställningarna: Hur konstrueras identiteten “invandrare” i det analyserade materialet? och Vilka diskurser framträder i analysen? Analysen visar att identiteten “invandrare” är starkt förknippad med negativa aspekter, trots att det finns de som försöker erbjuda en alternativ bild. Det framkommer även att integrationsdiskursen är dominerande, utan att för den delen vara fristående från de tre övriga diskurserna, förorten, problem och motverka fördomar. Inom diskurserna framträder “invandraren” nästan uteslutande i samband med sociala problem, vilket tolkas härstamma från postkoloniala tankar om de Andra. Resultatet bryter något från tidigare forskning på området i och med att vi identifierar en diskurs med positiva förtecken som erbjuder motstånd mot de övriga diskurserna.

    Abstract [en]

    The landmark book series Slott och herresaten i Sverige (transl. Castles and Manor Houses in Sweden), published in 1966-1971 by Allhems forlag, is still today considered the most important art historical reference work on Swedish manor buildings and country houses. The 18 volumes seem to present a near complete picture of the nation's rich heritage of manor buildings, combining the comprehensive and topographically organized guide book with the thoroughness of the architectural monograph. This paper will address the more problematic aspects of the book series, its critical role in the writing of a Swedish architectural history and in shaping a national country house narrative. While each volume provides an authoritative and concise overview of the history, ownership and stylistic development of the most significant manor buildings in the province - their architecture, interiors, gardens and collections - the presentation with its general descriptions, formal analysis and neutral tone omits a more in-depth analysis of these complex environments as well as underlying social, political and economic aspects. The descriptions have, in a sense, been working against the depth of historical understanding and the identification of more complex networks. As a consequence, the Swedish manor house is presented as a continuous and self-contained "treasure house", with the critical perspectives and broader European context very seldom present in the characterizations.

    Denna studie handlar om hur unga män med utländsk bakgrund bosatta i socioekonomisktutsatta områden upplever massmedia och dess föreställning gentemot området de bor i.

    Studien är kvalitativ genom fokusgruppsintervjuer och berör frågor om hur dessa unga mänmed utländsk bakgrund beskrivs, hur massmedia talar om socioekonomiskt utsatta områdensamt hur massmedia spelar en roll i rapporteringen av dessa ovanstående faktorer.

    Vi kom fram till att dessa unga män med utländsk bakgrund bosatta i socioekonomiskt utsattaområden upplever att massmedia målar upp och reproducerar en övervägande negativ bild avde och området de bor i. De talar mycket kring sina egna känslor och hur upplevelsernapåverkar dem samt hur de speglar sig i deras liv.

    Denna uppsats behandlar ett ämne som jag har sett diskuteras och debatteras mycket i nyhetstidningar, sociala medier, arbetsplatser och i olika sammankomster där människor möts – Ungdomskriminalitet!

    Genom den kvalitativa forskningsmetoden ville jag ta reda på hur ungdomar med kriminell bakgrund ser på sina livsval och kartlägga hur arbetet med och för ungdomar med kriminell bakgrund kan te sig hos svenska myndigheter.  Sammanfattningsvis visar min studie på att det finns olika orsaker – bostadsområde, skola, arbete, socialt nätverk samt familjeförhållande är av betydelse för hur våra liv kommer att formas i framtiden. Denna studie visar på vikten av samverkan, men ger också en inblick i hur verkligheten ser ut för många ungdomar i dagens samhälle, där bl.a. ekonomisk- och social status leder till att ungdomar begår brott i tidig ålder. Jag har intervjuat fem killar som bor i vad man definierar som socio-ekonomiskt utsatta områden i Stockholm. Jag lyfter deras berättelser och analyserar resultatet så att läsaren kan få en helhetsbild av ungdomskriminaliteten i socio-ekonomiskt utsatta områden. Vidare lyfter jag deras egna upplevelser och förklarar dem med hjälp av sociologiska teorier/begrepp så som – konsumtion, socialisering och kapital.

    För att kunna stå sig på den alltmer konkurrensutsatta marknaden är det många företag som implementerat olika informationssystem som ska hjälpa dem att utveckla nya affärsmöjligheter. För verksamhetscontrollers kan dessa system bidra till att informationsinhämtningen effektiviseras vilket leder till att mer tid finns för analysarbete. Syftet med denna uppsats blir således att undersöka hur verksamhetscontrollers arbetar med olika typer av analyser i sitt dagliga arbete.

    Analyserna kan vara av både vertikal och horisontell karaktär och för att undersöka hur dessa används har en kvalitativ studie genomförts där tio stycken verksamhetscontrollers har intervjuats. Det framkommer att trots deras ökade teknikstöd ägnas inte lika mycket tid åt analys som de hade önskat, vilket i många fall bidrar till att de upptäcker avvikelser när de redan har hänt. För att undkomma detta problem visar studien en indikation på att företag nu satsar på en mer framåtblickande styrning, vilket ökar betydelsen av horisontella analyser.

    In this paper, the discussion on transnational project performance is linked to knowledge sharing. The aim is to enhance our knowledge of how knowledge sharing affects transnational project performance. Using case study data, derived from a transnational project assigned with the task of developing a transnational product, show that transnational project performance was hampered by communication and coordination difficulties. The findings show how (1) the double meaning of knowledge sharing and (2) the organizational context as setting the boundaries for project management in practice are related to transnational project performance.

    In this paper, we link the discussion on the differentiated multinational corporation (MNC) with organisational mechanisms for knowledge development and sharing. The aim is to explore the impact of different organisational mechanisms on knowledge development and sharing. Using case-study data-drawn from the same MNC-to explore two different organisational mechanisms, a Centre of Excellence and a transnational team, the findings illustrate how multifaceted knowledge development and sharing are. The organisational structure of the two organisational mechanisms partly determines whether knowledge development occurs locally or globally. This, in turn, has consequences for how knowledge sharing evolves. The sharing process is like a double-edged sword: how to share globally while allowing for local adaptations or how to share locally while developing global knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper develops a conceptual framework addressing the development and sharing of knowledge by Centres of Excellence and transnational teams, which are important organisational mechanisms used by headquarters to manage knowledge processes within multinational corporations. The inherent differences of Centres of Excellence and transnational teams are conceptualised in terms of pre-existing knowledge, practices, interaction and communication. The inherent differences in the organisational mechanisms influence the amount of subsidiary participation and what factors that facilitate and hamper knowledge development and sharing respectively.

    The purpose of this paper is to study how communication enables knowledge integration within transnational projects. Using longitudinal case study data to explore the theoretical arguments, interesting findings emerge. The main finding is that knowledge integration within the transnational project was hampered by ignorance – among project managers and members – of the impact and link between the use of different communication tools, subsequent communication process and knowledge integration. Other findings relate to how institutionalised behaviour persist change and subsequently partly explained why the communication process and thereto related communication tools were not adjusted to new circumstances and conditions. Finally, communication is an inherent part of knowledge integration within a transnational project and there is a need for communication to be sensitive to the complexity of the knowledge being integrated.

    I denna uppsats tittar vi på löneandelens och inkomstskillnadernas utveckling i Sverige sedan 1970-talet. Faktorer som förklarar ökade inkomstskillnader och minskad löneandel i Sverige ligger till grund för analysen. Fokus ligger även på de mätproblem som präglar löneandelen. Syftet med uppsatsen är att ge en översikt över den aktuella diskursen som råder kring inkomstskillnader och löneandelen i Sverige. Vi undersöker om det finns några samband mellan förklaringsfaktorerna till ökade inkomstskillnader och minskad löneandel i Sveriges utveckling och varför måtten är problematiska som forskningsämne. I vår slutsats finner vi det svårare att mäta löneandelen än inkomstfördelningen pga. definitionsproblem. Vi finner en koppling mellan den svenska inkomstfördelningen och löneandelen när det gäller ökade kapitalinkomster. Det går inte att säga hur mycket faktorerna påverkat löneandelen och inkomstfördelning eftersom det saknas tillförlitliga simuleringsmodeller.

    Abstract [en]

    Essay 1: If grandparents have an independent impact on their grandchildren's schooling, intergenerational correlations estimated using two generations will underestimate the true level of intergenerational persistence in education. Recent research has found such multi-generational effects, but there is still no consensus on whether these estimates are due to a direct impact of grandparents on their grandchildren, or if they arise because of measurement error or model misspecification. In this paper, I estimate the intergenerational transmission arising from direct interactions with grandparents by comparing families where the grandparent died before the birth of the grandchild with those where the grandparent lived to meet and spend time with the grandchild. I find that direct effects contribute most, if not all, of the transmission coefficient across three generations.

    Essay 2: Sibling correlations in education and income have been extensively studied in the literature, and attempts to look inside the correlation have focused on family and neighborhood effects. In this paper I estimate sibling spillovers in education—that is, the effect of an older sibling's schooling on their younger sibling's schooling. To estimate causal effects, I use a compulsory school reform in Sweden in the 1950s to instrument for the older sibling's schooling. I am unable to detect statistically significant sibling spillovers, implying that any such spillovers must be relatively small.

    Essay 3: (with Che-Yuan Liang) The implementation of a copyright protection reform in Sweden in April 2009 suddenly increased the risk of being caught and prosecuted for illegal file sharing. This paper uses the reform to investigate the effects of illegal file sharing on music and movie sales. We find that the reform decreased Internet traffic by 16 percent during the subsequent six months. It also increased music sales by 36 percent. Furthermore, it had no significant effects on movie sales. We conclude that pirated music is a strong substitute to legal music whereas the substitutability is less for movies.

    Essay 4: (with Magnus Gustavsson) This paper shows that between 1975 and 2005, Sweden exhibited a pattern of job polarization with expansions of the highest and lowest paid jobs compared to middle-wage jobs. The most popular explanation for such a pattern is the hypothesis of "task-biased technological change", where technological progress reduces the demand for routine middle-wage jobs but increases the demand for non-routine jobs located at the tails of the job-wage distribution. Our estimates, however, do not endorse this explanation for the 1970s and 1980s. Stronger evidence for task biased technological change, albeit not conclusive, is found for the 1990s and 2000s. In particular, there is both a statistically and economically significant growth of non-routine jobs and a decline of routine jobs. No link between wage changes and routine tasks, as would be expected from task-biased technological change, can however be established.

    This paper shows that between 1975 and 2005, Sweden exhibited a pattern of job polarization with expansions of the highest and lowest paid jobs compared to middle-wage jobs. The most popular explanation for such a pattern is the hypothesis of ‘task-biased technological change’, where technological progress reduces the demand for routine middle-wage jobs but increases the demand for non-routine jobs located at the tails of the job-wage distribution. Our estimates, however, do not support this explanation for the 1970s and 1980s. Stronger evidence for task biased technological change, albeit not conclusive, is found for the 1990s and 2000s. In particular, there is both a statistically and economically significant growth of non-routine jobs and a decline of routine jobs. Results for wages are, however, mixed; while task-biased technological change cannot explain changes in between-occupation wage differentials, it does have considerable explanatory power for changes in within-occupation wage differentials.

    This paper investigates the connection between the Swedish wage profile of net job creation and Autor, Levy, and Murnane’s (2003) proposed substitutability between routine tasks and technology. We first show that between 1975 and 2005, Sweden exhibited a pattern of job polarization with expansions of the highest and lowest paid jobs compared to middle-wage jobs. We then use cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of job-specific employment to map out the importance of routine versus nonroutine tasks for these changes. Results are consistent with substitutability between routine tasks and technology as an important explanation for the observed job polarization during the 1990s and 2000s, but not during the 1970s and 1980s. In particular, the overrepresentation of routine tasks in middle-wage jobs can potentially explain 44 percent of the growth of low-wage jobs relative to middle-wage jobs after 1990 but largely lacks explanatory power in earlier years.

    The implementation of a copyright protection reform in Sweden in April 2009 suddenly increased the risk of being caught and punished for illegal file sharing. This paper investigates the impact of the reform on illegal file sharing and music sales using a difference-in-differences approach with Norway and Finland as control groups. We find that the reform decreased Internet traffic by 16% and increased music sales by 36% during the first six months. Pirated music therefore seems to be a strong substitute to legal music. However, the reform effects disappeared almost completely after six months, likely because of the weak enforcement of the law.

    Piracy, Music, and Movies: A Natural Experiment2010Report (Other academic)

    This paper investigates the effects of illegal file sharing (piracy) on music and movie sales. The Swedish implementation of the European Union directive IPRED on April 1, 2009 suddenly increased the risk of being caught and prosecuted for file sharing. We investigate the subsequent drop in piracy as approximated by the drop in Swedish Internet traffic and the effects on music and movie sales in Sweden. We find that the reform decreased Internet traffic by 18 percent during the subsequent six months. It also increased sales of physical music by 27 percent and digital music by 48 percent. Furthermore, it had no significant effects on the sales of theater tickets or DVD movies. The results indicate that pirated music is a strong substitute for legal music whereas the substitutability is less for movies.

    This study estimates intergenerational wealth correlations across up to four generations and examines the degree to which the wealth association between parents and children can be explained by inheritances. Using a Swedish data set with newly hand-collected data on wealth and bequests, we find parent-child rank correlations of 0.3-0.4 and grandparent-grandchild rank correlations of 0.1-0.2. Bequests and gifts appear to be central in this process, accounting for at least half of the parent-child wealth correlation while earnings and education can account for only a quarter.

    This thesis explores the Swedish Institute’s construction of a national narrative of Sweden and the war and how it changed over time by comparing three time periods, 1939-1945, 1946-1959, 1960-1969. The adapting narrative of World War II serves to illustrate changes in the Swedish Institute’s projected Swedish identity, focusing on neutrality as an intrinsic component. Creating a national narrative to compliment Sweden’s image served to strengthen Sweden’s international reputation. Thus the Swedish Institute’s narrative of Sweden and the war adjusts according to the changing contexts. Ultimately the Swedish Institute constructed a narrative that was complimentary to the image of Sweden they intended to promote internationally.

    Om ett företag inser att marknaden har en orealistisk syn på bolagets intjäningsförmåga måste företaget informera marknaden om det. När ett företag gör det mellan de planerade och stadgade rapporterna kallas det för en vinstvarning. Tidigare studier finner abnormal avkastning i perioden kring offentliggörandet av en vinstvarning, samt att det finns bakomliggande faktorer som påverkar reaktionen. Majoriteten av tidigare studier är gjord på andra marknader än den nordiska, och i samband med att reglerna angående informationsutgivning skärptes. Syftet med denna uppsats är att studera aktiemarknadens reaktion anknytning till att en vinstvarning offentliggörs på de nordiska börserna. Undersökningen bygger på en eventstudie med totalt 169 observerade vinstvarningar under åren 2008-2016. Studiens resultat visar på en statistiskt signifikant negativ abnormal avkastning under dagen vinstvarningen offentliggörs, samt i perioden efter offentliggörandet. Resultatet visar även på att företag som vinstvarnar fler än en gång har en lägre abnormal avkastning, än de företag som endast vinstvarnar en gång under den studerade perioden.

    Syftet med forskningsarbetet är att undersöka pedagogernas syn på konflikthantering samt hur barns konflikter förebyggs i förskoleverksamheten. För att uppnå ett trovärdigt resultat har kvalitativa samtalsintervjuer i samband med barnobservationer använts som metod för undersökningen.

    Genom datainsamlingen kan det konstateras att konflikter tillhör förskolans vardag och kan vara både stora och små. Konflikter kan uppstå av många olika anledningar och något som pedagoger är överens om är att konflikter uppstår främst i samband med missförstånd mellan barnen. De menar att missförstånd har en central plats i barns konflikter och barn kan missförstå varandra både verbalt och icke verbalt beroende på situationen. Pedagoger har ett stort ansvar vid arbete med barns konflikter och konflikthantering, det kan vara konstruktivt eller destruktivt beroende på hur det hanteras. Det kan även handla om öppna och dolda konflikter. En slutsats som kan dras är att Vygotskij´s sociokulturella teori genomsyrar i pedagogernas arbete med att hantera och förebygga barns konflikter. I teorin ligger kommunikationen centralt och det har en stor betydelse vid detta studieområde, utan kommunikation kan konflikter inte hanteras. Det kräver att pedagoger stöttar och vägleder barns lärande utifrån den proximala utvecklingszonen. Genom pedagogens närvaro, delaktighet och vägledande arbetssätt kan barns lärande vidareutvecklas. Det är en god förutsättning för pedagoger att ha barns utvecklingszon som utgångspunkt vid lärande av konflikthantering. Konflikter och konflikthantering ses som ett lärandetillfälle för både barn och pedagog. Barn som lär sig att behärska sig, blir både tålmodiga, lyhörda och även mer empatiska. De värnar om varandra ännu mer och lär sig att vara en bra kompis. Så småningom ökar de sina sociala färdigheter och använder prosociala handlingar gentemot varandra. Även pedagoger tar lärdom för vidare arbete med konfliktsituationer. De reflekterar och ifrågasätter sitt handlande och bearbetar sina brister för att göra bättre ifrån sig. Det är ett bra sätt att utvecklas inom sin pedagogiska roll.

    Financing of research and development, as an important component of innovation, has attracted a renewed attention in academic financing literature. This paper examines the effect of financing constraints on R&D investments of high-tech Swedish companies over the period of 2010 to 2016. Accordingly, balance sheet data related to 49 companies, which has the smaller amount of employees in comparison with the rest of high-tech publicly listed companies is collected. Moreover, a dynamic model based on previous literature about financing constrained is developed to study the relation of both internal and external resources of financing with R&D investments of the selected companies. The result of this study shows that internal resources of financing such as cash holdings have a positive correlation with R&D investments. The coefficient of this financial variable is large enough to conclude that selected firms are financially constrained. However, based on other factors such as consideration of age and occurrence of global financial recession in the period that this study is accomplished, I concluded that dependence of companies to their internal resources for financing their R&D investments is an outcome of the characteristics of their environment.

    This thesis studies abnormal returns of credit rating changes. The purpose is to examine whether downgrades and upgrades lead to abnormal stock market returns. German data is used from the time period 1998-2018. This thesis examines ratings from all large credit rating agencies. These are Standard and Poor’s, Moody’s and Fitch. There is a total of 362 company rating changes during this period. After sorting the data, the remaining changes to be studied are 143 downgrades and 93 upgrades. An event study approach is used to examine changes during the whole period, combined with a comparison before and after the financial crisis in 2008. The comparison is interesting due to the criticism towards credit rating agencies before and during the crisis. Downgrades do not show any significant abnormal returns. Upgrades show positive (negative) abnormal return 15 days before (after) the announcement. One potential explanation is that upgrades might already be anticipated by the market participants and subsequently followed with an effect of overreaction. There is no significant change close to the event date. The comparison between before and after the crisis does lack significance to prove differences.

    The gambling regulation in Sweden is a controversial topic. The thesis compares the Swedish gambling regulation with current regulation in Britain and Denmark. Cost-benefit analysis is used to analyze the various differences between the regulations. Primarily information is used from surveys, interviews and legal texts to explain the existing problems related to the gambling market. This thesis compares the conditions in the different countries and differences in various gambling types. The thesis also sets out the conditions for the private companies and differences in socio-economic benefits. The conclusion is that the present regulation is not as economically efficient as the comparison countries’ gambling regulations.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis is to test two hypotheses about how work affects political participation. The first concerns unemployment, and states that unemployment has strong and negative effects on political activity. The second hypothesis is found in theories of participatory democracy, and claims that more democratic workplaces lead to more political participation. Existing empirical evidence on both of the hypotheses is not conclusive. Furthermore, studies have mainly been carried out using data collected in the United States. Here empirical tests of the hypotheses are undertaken using a Swedish survey.

    The results confirm the first hypothesis; unemployment has negative effects on political participation. The reasons for these negative effects are that the unemployed become less active in organisational life, fall outside of the recruitment networks where people are being asked to participate in politics, and experience a decrease in income. The second hypothesis is not supported. Workplace participation does not affect political participation, according to the analyses. The results are surprising for both hypotheses, and contradict previous empirical findings. The differences in results are likely due to differences in research design and differences in approaches to analysing political participation. Previous studies are inadequate in these perspectives, it is maintained.

    The thesis ends with a discussion of the results from the perspective of normative democratic theory. It is argued that the lack of political equality is particularly acute when the low participation among the unemployed is considered.

    Several schools of thought claim that citizens can develop their democratic skills at the workplace. Here I focus on the hypothesis put forward by Carole Pateman and by Sidney Verba and colleagues that state that by practicing civic skills and democratic decision-making at the workplace, citizens become more active in politics. I test the hypothesis with a nationally representative panel survey of the Swedish population. My findings contradict previous empirical research as no impact on political participation was discovered. I argue that the effects may have been overestimated in prior studies because the tests were based on cross-sectional data: insufficient care was taken with a number of significant methodological problems. The study points to the importance of using panel models when investigating the causes of political participation.
