Utbetalningspolitik i Sverige: En studie om utdelningar och återköp i svenska börsföretag2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper provides evidence on Swedish payout policy during the past 20 years (1992-2012). The sample data consists of companies that were listed on Stockholm Stock Exchange (SSE) “Large”, “Mid” or “Small Cap” list during spring 2014. We show that repurchases of shares still represents a small proportion of the total payout, which contradicts results from other international studies. The dividends therefore still constitute the bulk of the total payments. We document a drop in net income during the financial crisis followed by reduced payments during 2008-2009. Repurchases decrease significantly during this period to virtually absent; confirming previous studies that argue that repurchases are a more flexible payout method than dividends.

Ambiguity Stress Scale: utveckling av ett mätinstrument för upplevd otydlighetsstress2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Motivation & Målkongruens: i ett produktionsföretag2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Subsidiary network embeddedness: Integration, control and influence in the multinational corporation1997Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with subsidiaries in multinational corporations and especially how thespecific operational environment of the subsidiaries affects integration, control andinfluence in the multinational corporation. This study demonstrates that subsidiaries'embeddedness in their business networks does not only influence them, but also thebehaviour and development of the multinational corporation of which they form a part.By using a network approach, one can detect and study the specific operationalenvironment, in terms of suppliers, customers and other counterparts, such ascompetitors, government agencies, and labour unions. Interdependence is createdbetween the subsidiaries and their counterparts through the gradual adaptation ofresources and activities. Interdependence makes it possible for the subsidiaries and thecounterparts to influence each other's activities and operations. In this study we havemade a distinction between external embeddedness, that is relationships withcounterparts outside the legal system to which the subsidiaries belong, and corporateembeddedness, meaning relationships with sister units.

The empirical base of this thesis comprises 100 subsidiaries in 20 divisions inSwedish multinational corporations. The main empirical findings are as follows: Thesubsidiaries' embeddedness in their networks effects their headquarters' integrativeendeavour and the subsidiaries' perceived control. The more the subsidiaries are highlyexternally embedded, the more restricted headquarter's possibilities to control theirbehaviour and development, while the opposite is true the more corporately embeddedthe subsidiaries are. The resources created in the network can be used by thesubsidiaries to influence the strategic behaviour of the multinational corporation if theyare providers of technological knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

For decades, scholars have put forward the idea that change in industrial networks depends on the relationships and networks themselves. However, models are still lacking that conceptualize the heterogeneity of relationships and networks and that show how this heterogeneity actually affects change. This paper puts forward a model suggesting that network structure—in terms of an open or closed system—and relational embeddedness together affect the ways knowledge is gained, given knowledge flow and problem solving as two sources of knowledge. Moreover, the paper proposes that this effect influences the tacitness and novelty of the knowledge gained. Additionally, network structure and gained knowledge are postulated to have an impact on two changes, the establishment of relationships and the development of technology, which take place in industrial networks. The paper advances six propositions and concludes with implications for research and practice.

Balancing subsidiary influence in the federative MNC: a business network view2007In: Journal of International Business Studies, ISSN 0047-2506, E-ISSN 1478-6990, Vol. 38, no 5, p. 802-818Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we argue that a fruitful approach to the analysis of inter-organisational power in multinational corporations (MNCs) is to model the organisation as a federation. In the federative MNC, the headquarters and the subsidiaries are involved in a perpetual bargaining process. Thus a crucial issue is what power bases are there that the different actors in the federative MNC can use to influence strategic decisions. In this paper, we focus on the power bases associated with the local business network in which the different subsidiaries are embedded, and on the headquarters' knowledge concerning these networks. A causal model is developed and tested with data from 97 subsidiaries in 20 MNC divisions. The results indicate that the strength and influence of a subsidiary's local business network are determined by the extent to which the subsidiary provides technology within the MNC. The fact that the business network is strong does not suffice to augment the intra-organisational power of a subsidiary. In addition, our investigation also provides support for the idea that, when the headquarters has a sound knowledge of the subsidiaries' business networks, it is better able to balance or moderate the influence of strong subsidiaries. The paper concludes by pointing out a potential dilemma facing the headquarters of the federative MNC: externally embedded subsidiaries can provide access to a variety of competencies, but they may also reduce the subsidiaries' interest in contributing to the overall performance of the MNC.
