Så ska det låta: Studier av det musikpedagogiska fältets framväxt i Sverige 1900-19652000Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The subject of this dissertation is the evolution of the music education field in Sweden. The study has three levels. The first discusses different music educational issues. The second is about the individuals and institutions that have dominated the field, and the third level is about the structure of the emerging field.

Important themes in the discussions are analysed by using a variety of sources - letters, diaries, books, school books, speeches, curriculum texts, journals and reviews. The symbolic assets of dominant individuals and institutions are identified. Hence, different strategies and positions in the field are clarified.

One conclusion is that the present field of music education emerged from an apparatus dominated by the Royal Academy of Music. During its development, the field had two important poles. One was related to the compulsory school system, and the other was related to the sphere of professional musicians and the music institutions. Furthermore, two other poles are identified as forward- and backward-oriented.

Different successful strategies were found in the field, illustrating the most important positions. These positions are identified as servant of the church, local celebrity, innovator of art and culture, liberator of the child, showman and micro-politician.

Important themes in music education are discussed in this study, like the relationship between Method and the Master, the relationship between Music and the Child, and the disciplination of the body.

Homologier2008In: At sætte spor på en vandring fra Aquinas til Bourdieu: æresbog til Staf Callewaert, Hexis , 2008, 1. udgave, p. 273-293Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [da]

From Sermons to Sex: Complaints about Church of Sweden Priests 2000 - 2004. A Preliminary Report.2009Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The Church of Sweden (national, Lutheran) was disestablished in the year 2000 and former state obligations were transformed to the church itself. Major changes were made in the oversight of the clergy and all complaints were to be handled by the church. All cases of complaints about priests in 2000 – 2004 were investigated, altogether 159 cases concerning 135 priests. The complaints were about a wide range of issues: from sermons and presiding at common worship to adultery, rape, greed and addiction. The complainants were parish councils, private persons, colleagues, and bishops. In 45 cases the diocesan chapter opened a case leading to admonition, period of probation or prohibition. The decisions were as follows: admonition or period of probation in 12 cases; prohibition in 10 cases; male priests were significantly over-represented. In 7 cases no measures were taken and in the rest of the cases the chapter criticized the priest in a statement, remanding the case to (mostly the bishop); in one case the complaint was rejected. Clergy misconduct in the 21st century is compared with earlier research.

The Swedish Principal: Leadership Style, Decision-Making Style and Motivation Profile2007In: International Electronic Journal for Leadership in Learning, ISSN 1206-9620, Vol. 11, no 8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish schools have been under pressure for change for several decades. How leaders behave can be of vital importance in times of change. The principal is responsible for both the educational program and for the school budget. Two hundred Swedish principals (male and female) responded to questionnaires concerning their leadership style, decision-making style and motivation profile. The results show that 49% of the principals have a change centered leadership style, 38% were primarily intuitive when making decisions, and 44% were achievement motivated. No significant gender differences were found. The results indicate that many principals have fair prospects of leading their schools successfully in times of change.

Vicars as Managers Revisited: A Comparative Study2008In: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society, ISSN 0809-7291, Vol. 21, no 1, p. 91-111Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The possibilities for Church of Sweden vicars to manage their parishes in change were explored

in 2000. The results indicated that vicars had a low capacity for initiating and implementing organizational

change. The aim of this investigation is to assess whether vicars have a managerial

style that differ from other groups of civil servants. Using tested instruments, 240 Swedish vicars

(response rate 64%), 300 school principals (66%) and 64 social insurance officers (95%) were

asked about their leadership style, decision-making style, motivation profile and perceived operational

demands. The vicars stand out as a special group of managers with a strong relationshiporientation.

Headmasters and social officers are similar to each other in behaviour. The results are

explained by that pastoral work is founded on relations, the pastoral training of the vicars and the

«weight of history». A contributory cause may be that many priests are perceived as having a

    «helping approach» to leadership.

A Study of Professional Development of Swedish School Leaders and their Views on how it needs to be Navigated2008In: World Studies in Education, ISSN 1441-340X, Vol. 9, no 1, p. 55-72Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A school principal has to play many different roles, such as a decision maker, problem solver, instructional leader and change agent. Research studies on profiles and preparation of school leaders have demonstrated many similarities and some differences between school leaders in different contexts. This study undertaken in Sweden, the third largest country in Europe, but with a small population with particular problems of her own, focuses on the profiles and pre-service and in-service training received, and how the school leaders perceive that their future professional development programs requirements to be designed and provided. The sample includes both principals and vice-principals in Swedish schools. Results suggest that the most important reasons for becoming principals were to transform society and the attraction of higher salaries. Only one third had undergone some sort of pre-service training whereas almost all have undergone in-service training. In their view ‘Human resources management’; ‘Introduction and management of reforms’; ‘An induction program’; and ‘Ethics, morals and values for educational leaders’ were the most important topics for pre-service programs.

Problem eller tillgång? En studie om social och etnisk mångfald i högskolan2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The general problem I am addressing concerns the role of the university as an actor for increased equality and democracy. How does this role manifest itself in selecting and recruiting students to the university and how does it influence teaching? The aim of my empirical study is to describe and understand processes and contexts where ethnicity and class are important. The empirical material consists of interviews with students and teachers from the department of law at Uppsala University.

To analyze the consequence of ethnical and social diversity I have chosen theories which are founded in a feminist, emancipating and democratic pedagogy with a focus on connected teaching. Connected teaching is the opposite of “banking education”. In banking education the teacher deposits knowledge in the students. To analyse if the student can contribute with different perspectives on perception of knowledge and modes of learning I have studied the acting space and degrees of freedom given the students.

My investigation shows that the students thirst for being supplied with the right track to become jurists, and the teachers support this. Social and ethnical background is made invisible, at the same time as it can become an obstacle. Not every student has a voice in the seminar and most of them have not learnt to extend their space for action, but rather have a desire to be taught or just supplied with knowledge.

To strengthen the connection between teaching and the intentions in higher education the students should be encouraged, and the barriers against raising one’s own critical voice must disappear. Furthermore, acting space for participation is needed to influence a democratic educational process. The governments’ means to counter uneven recruitment has mainly consisted in increasing the number of educational seats. With the current admission regulations (autumn 2008) higher education will continue to reflect class society on a structural level.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The objective of the present study was to study the ability to influence young at-risk patients attitudes toward tobacco use through two intervention methods that were performed by dental health professionals. Materials and Methods: Two inteiventions, a brief individual motivational interview and an adapted school lecture, were studied, and both were compared with a control group Before and after interventions, a questionnaire was used Patients born in 1989 and 1992 who were judged by the dental personnel as potentially at risk for dental diseases, a total of 301 individuals, were included. Results: Both before and after interventions, the results showed a generally negative attitude towards tobacco use A majority of the participants were positive towards measures that were taken to control the spread of tobacco use, younger participants (born 1992) to a greater extent (73%) than the older participants (born 1989) (54%) Important factors that kept the participants away from tobacco use were the harmful effects and the approaches of parents and friends The older participants believed to a greater extent that they would try smoking as adults No change in tobacco use was registered after intervention, although the participants reported an increased use among friends Conclusions: The two pedagogical methods that were used in the present study influenced the young people's attitudes towards tobacco use only to a small extent However, the period between 12 and 15 years old seems to provide a good opportunity to influence attitudes towards tobacco. The adolescents' demand for interactive learning and their development of attitudes and tobacco use habits in relation to family and friends provide opportunities to use new pedagogical models
