Ayatollah Khomeini: I ljuset av imam Alis esoteriska läror om rättvisa och politisk makt, i Nahjul Balagha2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The gathered texts and letters from Ali Ibn Abi Talib, found in the book Nahjul Balagha, constitute one of the most important writings of Shiite Islam, next the hadits and the Quran.Imam Ali´s ethics and moral approach in Nahjul Balagha, is considered by imam Ali, to beseen as a guideline for both individual purposes as for any kind of governance. The esotericteachings, about truth and justice in Nahjul Balagha, should therefore probably have been of agreat concern to Ayatollah Khomeini and the Islamic revolution. This essay will from an deductive approach, on a relatively contemporary historic event, try toanalyze Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini´s interpreting on imam Ali´s texts and preaching inNahjul Balagha. The Islamic revolution, as the Islamic Republic of Iran, led by AyatollahKhomeini, was confirmed as both brutal and violent. My ambition in this essay, will there forconcern a possible interpreting on justice and political rule, from Ayatollah Khomeini and theIslamic Republic of Iran, on imam Ali´s teachings in Nahjul Balagha.

Kravet på godhet: en analys av etiska krav inom kristen etik2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis will discuss the ethical demands that are given by Stanley Hauerwas and William Schweiker in their theory about Christian ethics. The question at issue being discussed is which ethical demands to act good is revealed in Hauerwas and Schweikers understanding of Christian ethics and do they put a stronger demand on Christians to act good? This thesis finds out that both of them put some special ethical demands for Christians that are not the same as to other people. In their writing about the special claims for Christians, when it comes to moral behavior, they have their own way of understanding what these claims are.

Hauerwas claims that Christians should act good because of Jesus Christ. To learn to be like him humans need to develop their virtues in a community of virtues. The church is the place where your person and character can develop in a certain way. This view is, according to this thesis, not reasonable in a world with global dynamics. Schweiker claims that the agent and his actions have a special relation and that humans as agents needs to take responsibility and use it as a moral imperative. For Christians responsibility gets more important because of their belief. Schweiker presents an ethic that is both reasonable and applicable to other worldviews in a world with global dynamics.

Re-Imagining Civic Influence in Contemporary Uganda: A Study of Pentecostalism´s Role in the Empowerment of Kampala Youth2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores what role Pentecostalism has as an emerging actor in Uganda in terms of empowering the largely marginalised youth population. Therefore, the purpose of the thesis is to examine how Pentecostalism may contribute to youth´s participation and influence in society and, as such, the realisation of their civil rights as the sovereigns of the country. Based on two months of field research, the thesis is constituted mainly by empirical material from interviews with Pentecostal youth1 in Kampala, as well as contextualising secondary material. This material is then analysed through a theoretical framework based, mainly, on agency theory as it explores the social circumstances in which the agency of the youth is both disabled and enabled, as well as marginalisation and identity-making theory. First, it is argued that the generational gap, characterised by patronage, as well as government`s deployment of physical and psychical violence against youth has worked against the youth and deprived them of their agency. Second, it is argued that Pentecostal churches empower youth to critically reflect over their marginalised position in society, out of which as sense of agency may grow at an individual level. Finally, it is argued that as the churches establishes constructive behaviours among the church youth, this has positively contributed to their social standing in society and the realisation of their civic influence. In turn, potentially contributing also to the wider youth population´s influence, as well as the democratic development and security in Uganda.

Mänskliga rättigheter vid en naturkatastrof: En jämförelse mellan Haiti och Thailand2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There are three main purposes for this thesis; the first is to distinguish the possible violations that can occur in time of natural disasters. The second is to analyze if there is a correlation between political systems and how the effected country handles the aftermath of a natural disaster. The third purpose is to determine the role of the global community and what responsibility lies with them. The issue is often that the aid becomes the main object for discussion and analysis, but the focus rarely shifts to the effected State. Therefore the focus in this essay is the political system and how they cope with the human rights violations that can occur in a time of natural disaster. The questions are; what human rights are at risk of being violated during a natural disaster? What general impact do the different political systems have on how they handle the human rights violations that arises? In which ways can other countries assist in a natural disaster and what responsibility do the global communities have?To be able to discuss human rights, it is necessary to know one perspective of how they came to be. For this purpose, this thesis will explain human rights from the perspectives of Jack Donnelly and Ronald Dworkin. They speak about rights and obligations; Donnelly means to say that all rights are universal and Dworkin put rights in a perspective of equal respect and concern. Some of the rights violated in the aftermath of the natural disaster were the right to a family life, the right to personal security and the right to ones property.

When analyzing the political systems and the responsibility of the world in the consequences of a natural disaster, I applied Ulla Erikson-Zeterqvists explanation of early institutional theory that implies tree conditions that make an organization successful. The first condition is where the administrative control lays, second the commitment of grassroots organizations and third, the participation of the local community. In this analysis the conclusion is that the political system is not the main factor in upholding human rights. The main factor is the stability of the State and what the State is willing to do for its citizens. The stability of the States determines the standard for what human rights mean and how the aid is structured. If the State is corrupted it makes it harder for the global community to assist. The countries history affects their behavior and in a time of crisis, the States true commitment is shown.

Pathways of participation: Considering the case for empowering participation within humanitarian action2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When consulted, aid-recipients consistently report not feeling included or adequately consulted regarding the planning and execution of programmes. On top of a serious lack of opportunities to be engaged or empowered this seems to provide a sufficient reason to explore ways of making participation in humanitarian action an empowering experience in itself. This paper will explore how empowerment could be used in practice and employs the term empowering participation to refer to the desired process of including aid-recipients. To do so it uses a hypothetical example of how it might be accommodated in a programme’s feedback mechanism (FM), that controls a certain access to information and influence, identified as key to empowerment, as a case study to understand some of the potential, and limits, of empowerment as praxis. To get a better idea of how the special circumstances of different groups affect the process youth have been singled out as the programme’s hypothetical target group. The key finding is that for a FM to facilitate empowering participation a clear focus has to be on a commitment to, and recognition of, an incentive to see the relationship within it as one between experts. Requiring the reasons for entering into a communicative relationship to be clearly stated as well as clarifying the roles of those involved. Perversely, confusion or vagueness could frustrate or counter empowerment efforts. There are certainly challenges, but without confronting them we will not know what benefits could have been reaped and if we take serious the view that people should fundamentally be supported to help themselves, we should not shy away from asking and giving serious consideration to difficult questions.

Redefining Gender Roles: Developing relationships between Sacred Texts and Feminism2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis utilized the field hermeneutics within the study of gender roles of  women within religion.  It argues the relevance of interpretation that have lead to the patriarchal structures within culture and society.  In effort to restructure their place in society, women are redefining gender roles through a combination of hermeneutics and Feminism.  They are looking at commonly misinterpreted verses that have lead to their subordination to male culture, while also bringing attention to texts and stories within the Bible and the Quran  that have long been neglected to show the equality that lies within their religions.

Församlingen som sakrament: Dop, medlemskap och ekumenik bland frikyrkokristna vid 1900-talets slut2008Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In the dissertation Free Church ecclesiology is examined from the point of view of three themes: faith, baptism and membership with certain concern for ecumenical experience.

The essential source material in the dissertation consists of 30 qualified interviews with members from five Swedish Free Church denominations. The result of these interviews have been related to a broader Free Church context in history and the contemporary situation.

In connection with these considerations a thesis about the congregation as a kind of sacrament has been applied to the material, specifically what relates to the significance of being a member of the congregation. The congregation as life form is verified through the congregation’s fellowship/communio as expressed in participation. This becomes an effective sign and instrument for the presence of Christ through the congregation in the world. The process of unity occurring within Swedish Free Church life is related to a mutual interpretation of the congregation as participant in the presence and work of Christ. The continouous process toward unity which has taken place between Free Church denominations with respect to distinctive teaching, not the least concerning baptism, along with praxis and spirituality is interpreted from such participation of the congregation in Christ’s presence and work.

The Construction of Truth and the Silence of Responsibility: A discourse analysis on the idea of justice and a Sami Truth Commission2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Throughout history the Sami community have been excluded from Swedish society. They were submitted to discrimination, abuse and the denial of rights. Although the political movement of Sami people is long, we have in recent years seen how a demand for truth and justice is taking more space within the official Sami political movement. The aim of this thesis is to gain a wider understanding of Sami political demands and the idea of justice in Sweden through a Truth Commission. Applying a post-colonial theory and Bacchi’s “What’s the problem?”-methodology I have set out to analyse how the discourse of the idea of justice and a Sami Truth Commission (STC) is being constructed by the Sami political movement, non-affiliated Sami and the Swedish government. The secondary material I have used is earlier research and pre-existing interviews with Sami people. My primary material is documents made by Sami political movement and the Swedish government regarding a STC. The conclusion is that the Sami political movement are constructing the discourse on a STC with a homogenous view of accountability. The non-affiliated Sami is constructing the discourse with a diversity of notion such as accountability, moving on and internal responsibility. The government’s discourse on STC is constructed with non- accountability and silence. However, there is a discourse on the idea of justice and it is constructed with notions of increased participation and to combat racism.

Representations of British Salafi Responses to the 7/7 Bombings: An Iconographical Analysis2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Mainstream media has markedly depicted Salafism in quite monolithic ways, giving an impression of uniformity in ideology and practice of this community. This picture has moreover been framed in particularly negative ways when destructive phenomena like transnational terrorism, violent Jihadism and radical insurgency are closely associated with the movement. I decided to study how British Salafist responses to the London 7/7 bombings have been represented. The aim has been to study how such an atrocious act with the capacity to divide society has stimulated the will to live in peace or conflict; and moreover, I aim to look at how these responses have been portrayed by Salafis themselves over against the depictions given by mainstream media. I have however chosen to focus on the visual iconographic representations of these responses because I found them intriguing: “a picture paints a thousand words.” The thesis conducts a critical discourse analysis of these visual representations of Salafist responses to 7/7.

Medical age assessments and the critique - from a human rights perspective2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to analyse and review the medical age assessments performed on young asylum seekers in Sweden in order to find out if it they are compatible with human rights and if these methods affect our understanding of human rights and human dignity. The theories human dignity and postcolonialism are used to answer the research question. The results of this thesis were that the medical age assessments are not reliable to perform on asylum seekers which originate from countries where their civil registration systems are weak. The methods are ambiguous and not reliable therefore the results could have consequences for the asylum seekers’ lives. Judicial and political decisions which permit these medical age assessments to be performed lack moral justification, because they risk violating the human dignity of asylum seekers since they do not consider the consequences these medical age assessments can have for the asylum seekers lives. The discourse on young asylum seekers are also included to understand the overall context of which these methods are being performed and the results showed that the young asylum seekers are racialised and the methods have effects which are discriminatory and do not respect the inherent human dignity of the asylum seeker.

The Role of Human Rights in EU-Belarus Relations2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

It has been proven that the burgeoning power of the EU is not negligible. However, it is still debatable whether the EU acts as a smart power in its external human rights policy. Through Joseph Nye's theory of hard, soft, and smart power, this thesis will offer a critical understanding of a wide range of factors which merits the EU's role as a smart power. The contemporary history of Belarus also illustrates that the political, economic, and cultural endeavours of the EU reveal the institution's role as a smart power. Within the theoretical framework predicated on Nye's theory on the aforementioned powers, the EU-Belarus relations will be be analysed in order to lay bare the power of the EU and to shed light on the significance of human rights in the EU policies.

”What, so genesis is a lie? Shocker.”: en kvalitativ studie om banal religion i TV-serien Supernatural2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine how religious phenomena in the TV show Supernatu-ral, with focus on banal religion, can be viewed as a part of the mediatization of religion in society. Furthermore, to find out if the representation of religion in the show is differ-ent in its later seasons in comparison with its earlier seasons. Through a qualitative analy-sis and with Hjarvards mediatization theory, as well as his concept of banal religion, Su-pernatural and its religious content has been examined. The research questions used in this study order to reach the aim of the study are what differences in the representation of religion can be found in the later seasons, in comparison to the earlier seasons? is there an increase in loosening of the Catechism of the Catholic Church in the later seasons? and can the representation of religion in the later seasons of the series, according to Hjarvard, be regarded as banal religion? In addition to a qualitative method, an abduc-tive research approach has been used as well as certain parts of Andersson and Hedlings (1999) film analysis process. In the comparison of the series later and earlier seasons, this study finds that some differ-ences exist. These differences are among other things shown by the representation and the personification of God, in the series. Further, the study shows that a slightly increased loosening of the Catechism of the Catholic Church can be seen in the later seasons. An example of this is the introduction of an entity that is God’s sister. In conclusion, this study demonstrates a number of examples of how Hjarvards mediatization theory can be applied to the representation of religion in the series. Moreover, the study can, in some ways, confirm that the representation of religion in the later seasons of the series, accord-ing to Hjarvard, can be viewed as banal religion.

The Role of Personal Relationships in German-American Relations2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

For centuries, statesmen have engaged in personal encounters and correspondences with their political counterparts abroad and thereby exercised what can be called ‘personal diplomacy’ with the aim of influencing the other’s foreign policy. By tracing the use of this strategy in the history of the transatlantic relations between Germany and the United States of America from WWII to the present day, this research aims to analyze the applicability of the concept in this particular bilateral relationship and highlight the successes and failures of different statesmen’s attempts at exerting several types of power. To do so, Raven and French’s so-called ‘Power/Interaction Model of Interpersonal Influence’ is applied to the five case studies, which are the personal relationships between American presidents or secretaries of state and German chancellors or foreign ministers, namely Adenauer and Dulles, Ford and Kissinger, Kohl, Reagan and Bush Senior, Schröder and Bush Junior and Merkel and Obama. What transpires from the examination of their friendships or enmities is that personal relationships do indeed have an impact on statesmen’s political decisions in the German-American relationship, though, whether this influence has been essential or minor differs from case to case. Be that as it may, by presenting the numerous historical instances in which personal diplomacy can be said to have taken place and thereby demonstrating that there exists a trend, this thesis arrives at the verdict that personal diplomacy is a considerable factor in the two countries’ relations and one that demands attention if the scholarly discourse seeks to gain a full understanding of international political processes.

European External Border Management and its Narratives: Aspects of Dominance and Neocolonialism in European Foreign Policy during the “Refugee Crisis”2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Large numbers of incoming refugees since 2015 were perceived as a major challenge for European cooperation and migratory regimes and the situation has within Europe soon been seen as a crisis. Since then, European states and the European Union (EU) have intensified measures to shut down migrant routes to Europe as well as their attempts to externalise means of protection of refugees in Africa. Based on a theoretical framework consisting of political science border studies, postcolonial studies and the method of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) together with the study of narratives in politics, this thesis analyses two critical events in this field, the 2015 Valletta Summit on migration where European and African leaders discussed the terms of migration cooperation and the 2018 debate on disembarkation platforms. The focus in this work lies especially on neocolonial elements in the power relations between Europe and Africa and how these are expressed in the narratives that were used to justify and explain the action taken. For this purpose, official documents, speeches, interviews and additional utterances from European heads of states and European politicians as well as from African heads of states and African Union (AU) representatives are analysed. Eventually, the thesis comes to the conclusion that a form of neocolonial exists that is here named implicit or indirect neocolonialism.

Facets of Male Violence Against Women With Substance Abuse Problems: Women With a Residence and Homeless Women2018In: Journal of Interpersonal Violence, ISSN 0886-2605, E-ISSN 1552-6518, Vol. 33, no 9, p. 1391-1411Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aims of this study were to investigate the type and extent to which women with substance abuse problems have been exposed to male violence during their lifetime, and to examine possible differences between women with a residence (WR) and homeless women (HW). The total sample included 79 women (WR, n = 35; HW, n = 44; M age = 47.8 years). Of the total sample, 72 women (91%) had experienced different kinds of male violence, 88% from former partners, and 26% from male friends or acquaintances. Of the 72 women, 71% further reported Countless occasions of violent events, and 36% had been forced to commit criminal acts. Abused women who had been forced to commit criminal acts were significantly more frequently found to be homeless, have reported parental alcohol and/or drug problems, have witnessed domestic violence in childhood, have been victims of sexual violence, have used illicit drugs as a dominant preparation, and have injected illicit drugs. Almost half of the abused women (46%) met criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), where HW showed an almost 4-time higher risk (RR 3.78) than WR. In conclusion there is a particular vulnerability in women with substance abuse to male violence, which has an important impact on their health status. Thus, from a public health perspective, it is suggested that for those women who have experienced male violence, treatment protocols need to include both assessing and addressing the impact of such experience in relation to substance abuse as well as concomitant health concerns.

Clergy Existence Challenged: An Existential Psychological Exploration of Meaning-Making and Burnout Related to the Church of Sweden2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores the prevalence of stress-related burnout among clergy in the Church of Sweden in the current postmodern context. The study focuses on the seriousness of the problem and the role of burnout’s existential dimension. It involves an existential psychological approach in relation to clergy health, connecting to the area of meaning-making and existential health in psychology of religion. A mixed-method design has been used. The study’s first phase has included survey questionnaires related to the work environment of the parish priest, and a self-appraisal burnout measure. Lay members of parish councils have received a shorter questionnaire emphasizing expectations of the clergy. The second phase has included a second burnout measure and semi-structured reflective interviews with parish priests. A method for interpreting lived experience has been used Results indicate a strong connection between vocational doubt and emotional exhaustion, including items with existential themes. A particularly important category of items related to the experience of meaning has been found to have a significant relationship with questions concerning vocational doubt. The laity’s understanding of clergy identity is clearly dominated by managerial categories. It appears that the understanding and role of the minister is insufficiently distinctive. Reactions among the clergy express concern about the level of stress and the absence of dialogue and response. A strong connection between vocational doubt and emotional exhaustion points to void and lethargy. Relations between emotional exhaustion and responses relating to meaninglessness, career choice, and isolation have proven statistically significant. Existential themes related to risk areas and job resources have emerged. Results point to the need for pre-emptive measures in the parish context involving both laity and priests. A Clergy Relational Model of Burnout and Existential Quest is offered for studying mixed samples of parish priests and laity.

Individuellt ansvarstagande som metod för rättvisa: Hannah Arendts ansvarsbegrepp i relation till Nancy Frasers rättviseteori2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The premise of the study is that a person who has no rights is treated unjustly. The claim is strengthened through Nancy Fraser's theory of justice. Her interpretation of justice means that individuals should have the opportunity to participate as equals in structures that affects the individual. She argues that the individual lacks the ability to participate as an equal if she has no rights. The main question under consideration is how Hannah Arendt's concept of responsibility can contribute to reduce the injustice that people with lack of rights suffer from. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether Arendt's concept of responsibility is relevant. Fraser's theory of justice is a tool to examine Arendt's concept of responsibility. The analysis of the concept of responsibility is performed with an argumentation analysis and a conceptual analysis.

The result of the examined question is that Hannah Arendt's concept of responsibility can serve as a method to increase justice in Nancy Fraser's perspective. My interpretation of Arendt's theory is that responsibility includes an obligation to act if one has the possibility to improve other people's lives. The individual responsibility for other people results in strengthening human's rights. When human’s rights are strengthened the injustice reduces, according to Fraser.
