    Abstract [en]

Birgitta Holm, Who died at Leopold's Hotel?

A split subject is signalled already by the twofold naming of Victoria Benedictsson/Ernst Ahlgren. More than most writers she herself took her pen-name seriously (ernst), and in literary history the naming of her has fluctuated more than in most cases. What effect has this split had on her writing? And what part did it play in her death, the brutal suicide at Leopold's Hotel? In Pengar, her first novel, the split manifests itself most clearly in a conflict between the protagonist Selma, in different stages of self-consciousness, and the narrative perspective, an instance close to Selma but not identical with her. The result is a tension between an intense narcissistic pleasure in the text and an equally intense assurance of (or dream of) self-forgetfulness. As seen by the names, the split in the subject is also a split in sexual affiliation. This split finds a curious and uncomfortable outlet in her cooperation with Axel Lundegård, as exemplified by her writing a passage for him about a woman's hand. It culminates in her confrontation/relation with Georg Brandes, ending in the death at Leopold's Hotel. The person dying there is a person driven to death by a deep split combined with a demand, from without and within, for unity and a unified sexual identity.

    Abstract [sv]

Private dreams and public expectations: Lotteries and dilemmas of progress and social welfare in early 20th-century Sweden2002In: Journal of Consumer Culture, ISSN 1469-5405, E-ISSN 1741-2900, Vol. 2, no 1, p. 53-79Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores morality and contradictions in Swedish political discussions between 1899 and 1939 concerning lotteries in general and the state lottery in particular. The seemingly narrow debates on lotteries reflected general dilemmas of the emerging modern consumer and welfare society. In order to balance economic value against the perceived lack of moral and social values, politicians were forced to define and redefine the concept of lottery. They also tried to handle the contradictions it presented. This article first argues that a paradoxical change occurred in the understanding of lottery in relation to modernity. Politicians redefined lottery as a modern consumer practice during this period. Lottery is then investigated as a means of envisaging the future. In the practice of playing the lottery, the community’s planning for the future and the individual’s dreams about his or her own future had come into conflict. A proposed solution to this was to let the lottery finance the general pension insurance. The contradictions between backwardness and progress, individualism and collectivism or hedonistic dreaming and rational calculations were not solved, but this article suggests that these notions may not have been as incompatible in practice as in theory.

Directing Deir el-Medina: The External Administration of the Necropolis2002Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    ABSTRACT

HÄGGMAN, SOFIA, 2002. Directing Deir el-Medina. The External Administration of the Necropolis. Uppsala Studies in Egyptology 4, Uppsala. x + 453 pages.

This study analyses the administrative structure of the Theban Necropolis, with focus on the changes it underwent in the mid- and late 20th dynasty. The structure of the administration is studied in terms of a patterns of contact between the Necropolis and officials representing other institutions. The officials and institutions that are discussed are the king, the vizier, the mayors of Thebes, and the House of Amun, most commonly represented by its head, the high priest of Amun.

The analysis is divided into four chronological phases. The 19th and early 20th dynasties (c. 1294-1153 BC) represent a period during which the administration followed the pattern established in the late 18th dynasty. This phase of relative stability is followed by a period of change in the mid-20th Dynasty, including the end of the reign of Ramesses III as well as the short reigns of Ramesses IV-VIII (c. 1153-1123 BC). The source material from this period reflects a change in the patterns of contact between the Necropolis and external authorities.

An examination of the administrative patterns of the late 20th Dynasty, covering the reigns of Ramesses IX-XI, with the era termed wHm mswt, (c. 1123-1070 BC) as well as the early 21st dynasty (c. 1070-996 BC) concludes the study. The administrative structure detectable in the documentation from the reign of Ramesses XI is further crystallized in the wHm mswt. In the 21st Dynasty the same pattern is found in a more condensed form, as formerly independent offices linked to the Necropolis are merged and held by one person, as the complex central government of the New Kingdom is replaced by a regional administrative focus.

This study also deals with the effects that these changes had on the workmen’s community of Deir el-Medina. In this context the abandonment of the walled village and changes in the character of Necropolis work, as well as in the internal administration of the work force, are discussed.

Common Knowledge : lowland Maya urban farming at Xuch2002Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

During the second half of the first millennium AD, several large urban communities developed in the Puuc region of the northwest Yucatán Peninsula. Investigations of architecture and ceramics at Xuch provide a spatio-chronological framework demonstrating the rapid growth of an urban settlement culminating in the Terminal Classic, and its subsequent decline. Archaeological, ecological and geochemical data are used to document the development of the Xuch archaeological landscape. At the time of maximum population, urban community structure comprised complexes of monumental civic and ceremonial architecture, extensive areas of residential settlement and vacant urban spaces. Surface and sub-surface data are used to interpret the long-term dynamic relationships between population density, land use patterns and ecology. The results demonstrate that vacant urban spaces formed part of a subsistence strategy emphasizing settlement agriculture. Cost effective methods of data recovery and analysis developed here can be applied elsewhere to obtain spatio-temporal frameworks of archaeological landscapes and rapid appraisals of socio-environmental interactions.

Kvinnofrid: Synen på våldtäkt och konstruktionen av kön i Sverige 1600-18002002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The present dissertation deals with attitudes towards rape in early modern Sweden. The narratives from rape cases show certain similarities and differences, all of which provide a basis for a categorization. In somewhat generalized form, the documents identify a cast of six different-type characters: the unruly soldier, the despotic household head, the foul-minded hired hand, the honorable wife, the naive servant girl and the innocent under-aged girl. Reports by representatives of any one of these types, display a common view, judgmental elements often included.

Views of rape between 1600 and 1800 were subject to changes of four kinds. One is, the woman is made an active subject, whose will and actions come under sharper focus in rape trials. A second type can be termed the sexualizing of the crime, where attack and assault aspects of a rape crime diminish, but purely sexual aspects increase, in importance. Amounting to a third change is growing interest in the remaining physical aspects of the rape crime. With this type as with the second type, brighter light falls on material and physical sides of the crime, while social matters and matters of honor became of less concern. A fourth change is that discussions of male authority run high at the outset of the period under study, but in time give way to talk of female qualities and morals. On the conceptual level the change can be interpreted as due to the shift which now linked violence and sexual practice directly to the individual and his/her morals, instead of as before to his/her social position in patriarchal society.

On the immediate plane the actions of a single male individual were under review in a rape case, but on a larger scale the main issue was how much authority and power the male should have by virtue of the position he held. There was yet a scale where questions lurked concerning the legitimacy of the patriarchal system as a whole and of political power in any form.

Gud för oss: Om den non-metafysiska realismen och dess konsekvenser för religionsfilosofins uppgift och natur2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The question this study seeks to answer is whether a rejection of metaphysical realism implies that it is impossible for us to make statements about an independent reality that we share with one another, statements that may be evidence-transcendent truths. Some of the problems that are discussed in the philosophy of religion presuppose metaphysical realism. Sometimes metaphysical realism is seen as our only chance to conceive of utterances concerning God as statements about a shared independent reality. This study argues, in contrast, that metaphysical realism is an untenable philosophical perspective that ought to be rejected.

In reconstructing and criticizing relevant aspects of the work of Quine, Putnam, Alston, Dummett and Davidson a non-metaphysical realist position is developed, a position which allows us to understand utterances made in religious contexts as statements about a shared independent reality and to consider them as evidence-transcendent truths without being challenged by the shortcomings of metaphysical realism. The non-metaphysical realist’s rejection of metaphysical realism forces us, however, to reflect afresh on the task and nature of the philosophy of religion. The philosophical enterprise is concerned with problematical situations that we human beings encounter. The philosopher of religion tries to resolve problems caused by the existence of religion; problems that people in our time have to tackle. While the problematical situations that we encounter change as our society changes, the problems that the philosopher of religion devotes herself to cannot once and for all be summarized as in a textbook. They are not limited to questions concerning God’s existence and properties, but include problems hitherto unnoticed in the philosophy of religion.

From Roman to Native: Colonialism and the archaeology of rural water management in the Maghreb2002Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis considers the archaeology of rural water management in the Maghreb in relation to modern colonialism. An attempt is made to recover the attitudes to people and landscape expressed in the archaeological literature, and to analyse them in a colonial/postcolonial context. The primary focus lies on works relating to early water management in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Libya.

The study consists of three sections. In the first of these (Chapters 1, 2, 3), colonial legacies in the archaeology of the rural Maghreb are considered, and the archaeological material related to rural water management is briefly summarised. Common issues of geography, history and archaeology with relevance to the study of ancient water management are addressed in Chapter 3. In the main section of the thesis (Chapters 4, 5, 6), a selection of archaeological works are examined with respect to the representation of Roman and indigenous people, and attitudes to landscape. In these three chapters I deal respectively with early colonial writings from the turn of the nineteenth century, post-Second World War writings from the late 1940s through the 1950s, and recent archaeological survey publications produced during the period of political independence in the Maghreb, from c.1960 to the present. In the concluding section (Chapter 7), my observations are brought together in an analysis of colonial mindsets manifested in the archaeological literature. These include studies of the production of knowledge, nationalism and colonial ideology, the use of stereotypes in representing the Other, and Western attitudes to landscape. Finally, the concept of creolisation is suggested as an alternative interpretive framework for rural water management in the Roman-period Maghreb.

A shift of focus from Roman to native is observed in archaeological interpretations of Roman-period rural water management in North Africa, changing over time from the late nineteenth century to the present. It is concluded that there is a strong relationship between modern colonialism, including decolonisation, and the representation of ancient, Roman colonialism. Dualistic approaches to colonialism are a common feature of the literature, as is a similar attitude to man and nature.

Hospitaltidens lyrik: Textkritisk edition av Gustaf Frödings lyriska produktion dec. 1898 - mars 1905. : Med inledning och kommentarer 2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the poetry written by Gustaf Fröding (1860–1911) during his stay at Uppsala lunatic asylum between December 1898 and March 1905. His production from this period is remarkably innovative. There he wrote the eccentric poems that were later to become part of the collection "Mattoidens sånger" ("The Songs Of The Fool").

There are two main parts to the study: an extensive introduction, and the established texts, which include "Mattoidens sånger," and hitherto unpublished poems and fragments, in fact, all of Fröding’s lyrical production that I have encountered from this period.

In the introduction I discuss the genealogy of the poems, the status of the manuscripts, Gustaf Fröding’s ideas on the art of poetry, his literary workprocess, various factors involved in attempting to date and establish the texts, e.g. Fröding’s handwriting, his spelling and punctuation, and his opinions on these issues. Further, in a section on earlier publications, I examine a hitherto unpublished correspondence between Cecilia Fröding and the Albert Bonnier publishing house, before I finally discuss the reception of the poems, the selection of the poems, and the principles of establishment.

The second part is comprised of the established texts and includes poetry and fragments from the asylum period, two translations, and two attempted translations. My comments, and brief descriptions of the manuscripts with the author’s comments and corrections, are placed in immediate conjunction to the texts. The appendix contains one precariously dated poem, a selection of Fröding’s axiomatic statements, a few of the manuscripts in facsimile, and comments on three poems.

"Det romantiska tidehvarfvet": De svenska romantikernas medeltidsuppfattning2002Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The dissertation deals with the view of the Middle Ages in the Swedish Romantic Movement in the first half of the 19th century. A presentation is given of the treatment of the Middle Ages in the historical and fictional works of the Romantics, and it is shown how this treatment was influenced by both their philosophical outlook and their view of contemporary morality and politics. Special attention is paid to the writings of Per Daniel Amadeus Atterbom (1790—1855) and Erik Gustaf Geijer (1783—1847), two of the most prominent exponents of Swedish Romanticism.

According to the Romantics, the Enlightenment and the French Revolution had caused a total breakdown of the established order and left society in a state of chaos. In their ideological struggle to lay the foundations of a new and better order, the Romantics looked to the Middle Ages for inspiration. In important respects, they found medieval culture to be an ideal to be emulated. They claimed that medieval man — contrary to the contemporaries of the Romantics — had ordered his life according to noble values and that he had striven to realise idealistic purposes. They were convinced that a revival of the medieval spirit — termed ’the Romantic Spirit’ — could form the basis of a future civilisation that would outshine the preceding ones.

Conquête, survie et disparition. Italien, français et francoprovençal en Vallée d’Aoste2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The present study deals with the linguistic situation in the Aosta Valley, which is situated in Northern Italy. Several languages, dialects as well as "patois" are used in this area and this thesis concerns three of them, namely Francoprovençal, French and Italian. Francoprovençal used to be the language of the people but is now decreasing. French was until the reunification of Italy in 1861 the language of religion, culture and administration but is now, in spite of the official bilingualism, more a symbol than a language. Italian, which was hardly spoken in this area a hundred years ago, is now the dominant language and the Aosta Valley tends to be unilingual.

The study is based on a corpus established in 1998 and which consists of a questionnaire on linguistic abilities, habits and attitudes concerning the three linguistic varieties named above.

The domains in which a language is used are essential for its existence and survival, and this thesis focuses on the vitality of Italian, French and Francoprovençal within the family, the community and the arts. The presence or absence of a language in a domain of use depends on several factors, such as environment, culture, economy and identity.

Individual identity is considered in this study to be the most important factor for the survival or the death of a language and every result is therefore measured in relation to identity. This thesis makes a distinction between active identity, that may constantly change, and basic identity, which is inherited.

Authority-based argumentative strategies: Three models for their evaluation2002Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is on argumentative strategies based on authority. In its first half, three of the most elaborate and influential approaches in argumentation theory, related to the models developed in this work, are analyzed: Douglas Walton's dialectical frame for analysis of arguments from expert opinion; Frans van Eemeren and Peter Houtlosser's pragma-dialectical approach to strategic maneuvering in argumentation; the concept of strategy used in Else Barth and Erik Krabbe's formal dialectics.

The second half contains three models for evaluation of argumentative strategies based on authority. Argumentative strategies are explained as a specific combination of the reasoning aspects and the social aspects of an argumentative activity.

The models are developed on the basis of three case studies. Each of the models is related to a particular type of authority-based argumentative strategy. It is claimed that the criteria for evaluation of such strategies vary with respect to the type of reasoning and the type of the audience group to which the strategy is directed. The evaluative criteria vary as well with respect to the type of authorities used and to the role the authority has in the reasoning.

The models are given as a tool that different audience groups my use to analyze argumentation in situations in which the role of authorities and critical thinking is crucial.
