Borders and Belonging: Nation-Building in Georgia's Armenian and Azerbaijani Ethno-Regions, 2004–20122016Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Since the fall of the Soviet Union, scholars researching ethnic politics have approached the South Caucasus as a testing ground for theories of separatism and conflict. But the 2003 Rose Revolution brought a new generation of politicians to power in Georgia. President Mikheil Saakashvili distanced himself from the ethnic nationalism of the past, which had poisoned relations between Georgians and their Armenian and Azerbaijani compatriots. The incoming authorities instead sought to foster an inclusive nationalism, wherein belonging hinged on speaking the state language and all Georgian-speakers, regardless of origin, were to be equals.

This thesis investigates this nation-building project and its influence on the integration of Georgia's Armenian and Azerbaijani borderlands. I first examine the mode through which these peripheries were incorporated into post-Soviet Georgia. Since Armenians controlled "their own" domain to a greater extent than the Azerbaijanis, I infer that the former were absorbed along integralist and the latter along colonial lines. Moving to the time-period after the Rose Revolution, I next explore if Georgian officials and Georgian adolescents were tolerant towards Georgian-speaking minorities. With the help of elite interviews and a socio-linguistic experiment (n = 792), I reveal that officials and adolescents were open to integrated Armenians and Azerbaijanis alike. I then proceed to inspect the centre's nationalising agencies and their efforts to incentivise minorities to interact with Georgians, and to use the state language during these contacts. Last but not least, I turn to the reactions this nation-building project elicited in the borderlands. On the basis of interviews with local elites and a socio-linguistic experiment involving Armenian and Azerbaijani adolescents (n = 434; n = 483), I discovered sharp differences: Armenians reacted with defiance and Azerbaijanis with compliance.

These findings augment our knowledge of ethno-linguistic stereotypes in the Caucasus. They also demonstrate that inclusive nation-building projects can inspire minorities to integrate – despite adverse circumstances – but hint at one condition conducive to this end. Armenians perceived the state language as a battering ram against "their own" domain, while Azerbaijanis saw it as a tool to escape their isolation. This within-country comparison suggests that similar nation-building projects can trigger different reactions in integralist and colonial borderlands.

Expressions of Future in Present-day English: A Corpus-based Approach2005Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This corpus-based study of the use of expressions of future in English has two aims: to examine how certain expressions of future are used in Present-day English, and to explore how electronic corpora can be exploited for linguistic study.

The expressions focused on in this thesis are five auxiliary or semi-auxiliary verb phrases frequently discussed in studies of future reference in English: will, ’ll, shall, going to and gonna. The study examines the patterned ways in which the expressions are used in association with various linguistic and non-linguistic (or extra-linguistic) factors. The linguistic factors investigated are co-occurrence with particular words and co-occurrence with items of particular grammatical classes. The non-linguistic factors examined are medium (written vs. spoken), text category, speaker characteristics (age, sex, social class, etc.), region and time. The data for the study are exclusively drawn from computer-readable corpora of Present-day English. Corpus analyses are performed with automatic and interactive methods, and exploit both quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques.

The study finds that the use of these expressions of future varies with a number of factors. Differences between spoken and written language are particularly prominent and usage also varies between different types of text, both within spoken and written corpora. Variation between groups of speakers is also attested. Although the linguistic co-occurrence patterns are similar to some degree, there are nonetheless differences in the collocational patterns in which the expressions are used.

Methodological issues related to corpus-based studies in general are discussed in the light of the insights gained from this study of expressions of future.

    Abstract [en]

The maid who fell silent. Epic structures and gender in Swedish drama 1725-1900

Epic structures such as soliloquies and asides are frequently used in drama. The narrative function served by these dramatic conventions enables characters to provide a running commentary to the plot, and this in turn makes the characters using them a driving force in the drama.

In this paper I discuss gender and social class of the dramatic figures using epic structures in Swedish drama from 1725 to 1900. The material studied consists of 25 plays.

The main characters af interest are the servant figures. The driving force of 18th-century comedy is the cunning maid and, to a lesser extent, her male counterpart. Around 1850 these servants are replaced by other figures, such as the scheming villain, a characteristic male figure in melodrama.

With the emergence of realism and naturalism, the use of epic structures is reduced. Female servant figures in naturalist plays have few lines, and use virtually no soliloquies or asides. They are a necessary part of the bourgeois family, but are no longer the driving force of the drama.

Regionala antroponomastikon under runsvensk tid2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Temporality and the Semantics of the Biblical Hebrew Verbal System2014Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation investigates the semantic factors behind the temporal meanings of the Biblical Hebrew (BH) verbal forms. Four different forms are studied, viz. qotel, yiqtol-L, qatal, and yiqtol-S. On the basis of comparative and historical linguistic studies, qotel and yiqtol-L are classified as originally progressive forms, whereas qatal and yiqtol-S are classified as originally resultative ones. Since there is a tendency in BH to use the progressive subgroup for future meaning and the resultative subgroup for past meaning, a key to understanding how temporality is expressed in this language is to understand the meaning of the progressive and the resultative verbal types.

In critical dialogue with modern typological linguistic research, a unified theory of aspect and tense is developed. The theory defines the meanings of the progressive and resultative verbal types in terms of a distinct kind of aspect, called “stage-based aspect”, and describes how tense meanings arise through reanalysis of these aspectual meanings, a process called temporalization. It is argued that progressive aspect is a basic meaning in qotel and yiqtol-L, and that resultative aspect is basic in qatal and yiqtol-S in its so-called “consecutive” form, wayyiqtol. The study investigates various verbal usages, showing where the stage-aspectual meanings are invariant and where they have been overturned as a consequence of temporalization.

Another major question concerns the semantic difference between the forms with shared aspectual meanings. On the basis of the semiotic theories of Bühler and others, it is suggested that yiqtol-L and yiqtol-S (here: yiqtol) are distinguished from qotel and qatal with regard to their appeal function. Full appeal function characterizes utterances that prompt the listener to immediate action. Verbal forms available for this function in BH are qatal and qotel, as well as the imperative. By contrast, the appeal to action in utterances employing yiqtol is invariably non-existent, or mitigated. Hence, reduced appeal function is a semantic feature of yiqtol. This feature may explain why temporalized meanings are especially favoured by yiqtol, since non-present meaning is one among several factors that reduce the appeal function of an utterance.

    Abstract [en]

This empirically based study aims at establishing the frequency, distribution, tenacity and the nature of errors produced by more than 700 advanced Swedish learners of French, at different university levels. The errors are classified in grammatical and lexical categories. Four grammatical categories (articles, nouns, pronouns, verbs) have been selected for a thorough examination, and examples of different types of errors are presented and commented upon. The error analysis follows, principally, the steps suggested by Corder (1974) and implies the discussion of such concepts as error, norm and usage.

The verbs present the most frequent and tenacious errors constituting at each level about a third of all errors. The proportions of the different types of errors change according to task and level. The errors concerning tenses predominate in the translation tests, those concerning conjugations in the diagnostic test. As for pronouns, they cause 40 % of all errors in the diagnostic test (fill-in/transformation tests), 7 %-8 % in the translation tests. This reduction is partly due to the fact that many pronouns are necessarily regarded as part of the construction of a verb and classed as such. Put together, the errors concerning gender, orthography and vocabulary constitute 40 % at the advanced levels.

The study includes a correlational analysis aiming at confirming or confuting some hypotheses regarding the interrelation, on the one hand between the results of the different parts of the two tests given during the first term of the university studies (vocabulary, grammar, metalingual knowledge), on the other hand beween the results and some external factors such as marks in French (secondary school), stay in French-speaking country, length of previous studies of French, etc. Among other things, it is shown that the students’ results in grammar are systematically better than those in vocabulary and that six years of previous studies of French do not generally lead to better results than three years’ studies.

<ir a + infinitivo> Modalidad y aspecto en el futuro del castellano rioplatense2016In: Revista Internacional de Lingüística Iberoamericana, ISSN 1579-9425, E-ISSN 2255-5218, Vol. 27Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper tries to describe the meaning of the periphrastic future <va a + infinitive> in Río de la Plata-Spanish. In contrast to previous works on the subject, claiming that this periphrasis concerns future events with some connection to the present (Fleischman 1982, Gómez Torrego 1988, Bravo 2008), we define the meaning of <va a + infinitivo> in this variety of Spanish as the expression of speaker attitude (modality) to events aspectually marked as “not begun” ([-comenzado]). Two different grammaticalization patterns are identified, which express dynamic and deontic modality, respectively. These patterns explain different traits that other authors have assigned to the periphrasis, as relative strength of assertion, level of commitment to the truth of the information expressed, imminence, intentionality and event planning (Sedano 1994, 2007; Gómez Torrego 1999 among others). We also propose an interpretation of other forms of the periphrasis normally ignored in the literature, as <irá a + infinitive>, <iría a + infinitive> or <va a + compound infinitive>. In addition it is claimed that the morphological future in -re expresses epistemic modality about events aspectually not marked for the parameter [±comenzado] and, therefore, in traditional terms, suitable for designates both present as future events.

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

This work investigates into the semantics of tense and challenges the traditional view of tense being a grammatical category primarily encoding temporal deixis. Instead, it is proposed that tense expresses a blend of aspect, evidentiality and modality, while temporal deixis is claimed to be to a great extent an inference drawn on these. A model for describing grammatical aspect is outlined, which emphazises on the natural boundaries of events, namely their beginning and their end. According to this, an event can be characterized as [±completed] and/or [±begun]. This model also naturally accounts for the "non canonical" uses of tense, as when past tense is used to describe present or future tenses, etc. The article focuses on River-Plate Spanish

Amning, kunskap och självbestämmande: Språkliga och interaktionella perspektiv på amningsrådgivning2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
