Vad innebär inkluderande handledning?2012Inngår i: Chalmers konferenser, NU 2012: 4. Handledning - med den lärande i fokus, 2012Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [sv]

Murukak Katavul Valipatu: A Study of the Worship of God Murukan in Malaiyakam on Ilam and in Tamilakam2003Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation highlights the continuity of murukak katavul valipatu, “the worship of god Murukan”, with its distinct characteristics, in the changing history of the island known as Ilam/Ilankai/Lanka/Ceylon/Sri Lanka. The institution of the worship of god Murukan in Tamil civilization is crucial to a historical understanding of the problems of the Tamil people in Malaiyakam where they have now lived since about 1800 (two centuries). The growth of the awareness of murukak katavul among Tamils in Malaiyakam – this mountainous landscape generates a new dynamic dimension in the religious and socio-political affairs in the history of Ilam. This investigation raises the problem of when, where, how and why the institution of the worship of murukak katavul in Malaiyakam was established.

First of all, in the origin and development of murukak katavul heritage, the study presents some major characteristics of valipatu, “worship”, tiruvila, “the holy festival”, of Tirumurukan. Sacred onomatics and toponomy in Malaiyakam reveal the religious manifestations among the Tamils. The Tamil people express their belief and practice of camayaneri, “the way of religion”, not only in the family shrines, and in the temples of Murukan on the regional level. The Tamils also continue their camayaneri in the kurincik kumaran kovil in Peradeniya University. Furthermore, they are active in the great temple of Katirkamap Perumal, “the great lord of Katirkamam”, in mutur, “the ancient village”, of Ilam in the national-international dimension in the encounter with religions of the multi-ethnic Tamil-Sinhalese-Christian-Muslim-Vadda communities from the standpoint of yatum ure yavarum kelir, “all are[our] kin and every place is [our] village”. Hence, in this temple not merely the aniconic presence of Tirumurukan is experienced, but also this temple as “spiritual solace”, is ascribed to the evocation of “awe and reverence, love and worship among all types of people” who visit this abode of Murukan for “peace and solace”. Thus, Murukavel says, “do not fear, take care, I know of your arrival”, and bestows paricu, “gift”.

Secondly, the study shows how Tirumurukan is referred to as the redeemer/liberator in the interrelation of religions and sociopolitics in the history of Malaiyakam. An attempt is made to show how camayaneri can play a vital role in the battle for liberation to achieve urimai, “rights”, in the prevailing milieu of violence, and suffering. Thus, the slogan “out of bondage” of the population of Malaiyakam became a reality. In the interreligious relation, this study also indicates how through Murukam, Caivam and Pauttam (Buddhism) were/are involved in the ongoing process of reinterpretation and transformation, a fact which provides new insights into the controversial issues of the island.

Thirdly, the investigation aims at providing available date-information with a critical and viable interpretation of texts with reference to the study of religions. The study is based on Tamil texts and observations from field work in Malaiyakam of Ilam and Tamilakam. The texts used are: Nakkirar’s (2nd century) tirumurukarruppatai, “Directing on the Way to Holy Murukan”, Arunakirinatar’s (14th-15th century) tiruppukal, “the Divine Praise”, and, further, other relevant sources of the past which are the same as today, facts which the field work substantiates. The texts, however, constitute and preserve the continuity in the midst of transformation. The selected materials, in the form of transliteration and a new translation, are presented in an interlinear arrangement of mulam, the “original”, text.

Den vanmäktige allsmäktige: Framställningen av Gud i två senmoderna svenska romaner2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Both contemporary research in History of Religions and current public debate tell us that Christianity as a religious form is challenged in today’s society. Nevertheless, Christianity is often present in secular artistic expression such as fictional literature. The purpose of this paper is to examine how God is portrayed in two late-modern Swedish novels, Djävulen och Gud by Mare Kandre (1993) and Boken by Niklas Rådström (2013).

The examination is based on a hermeneutic method using close reading in order to answer the questions asked. The result of the examination shows that God in the late-modern novels is portrayed as a figure with shifting emotions, and in both novels God goes through changes which are in some ways similar. The creator’s understanding for the human beings increases the more he learns about the humans and their free will and the closer to humanity he gets.

Problemet religion: – En innehållsanalys av läroböckers framställning av religion i ämnet samhällskunskap för gymnasieskolan2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay was to investigate how religious topics and events are presented in five coursebooks in social studies. To do this the following questions were answered: In which context do discussions about religion take place? Are religions brought up in different contexts? To which extent do discussions about religion occur? The method consisted of a both quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The results of this essay showed that discussion regarding religion in social studies coursebooks mainly focuses on wars, conflicts, terrorism and to some degree the human rights. Islam was the religion that occurred most frequently in the coursebooks. Furthermore, the effects of the results on Swedish students’ understanding of religion were discussed with the help of Fairclough’s theory on critical discourse analysis. One of the most important conclusions was that the coursebooks give the impression that religion in general and Islam in particular is a threat against democracy.

Adonis - från Mesopotamien till Grekland2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This paper attempts to trace the journey of Adonis from ancient Mesopotamia, through Phoenicia and finally to Greece, and to see how his function and cult have evolved during this migration. It starts with a short summary of previous research regarding Adonis and goes on to describe the myths and the rites of Adonis as they were celebrated in Alexandria, Byblos and Athens. I then examine possible connections to ritual drama, the mystery religions and whether there is any evidence that the Adonia might have been a germination ritual.

My conclusions are that Adonis loses his connection to the growing cycle and the ideology of sacred kingship with the move to Greece where the political system with independent city states is different, and that there has been too much focus on Adonis as a vegetation god. Since Adonis is connected with the ancient Near Eastern cults of sacral kingship it might be more rewarding to consider the death aspects associated with his cult and the possibility of ancestral worship in relation to a ruler. This would make some of the otherwise puzzling aspects of his cult more understandable.

Breaking the Bonds of Oblivion: An Analysis of the Role of Fate and Providence in the Apocryphon of John2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to investigate the role of fate in the Apocryphon of John – an issue which, with a few exceptions, has been surprisingly overlooked by modern scholarship. In the few modern publications available on the subject, the concept of fate has previously solely been examined in the light of the Greek Philosophical schools, often neglecting texts from a Jewish-Hellenistic context.  Here it is argued that the depiction of fate in the Apocryphon of John, as well as the dualism between Pronoia – the providence of god – and its negative counterpart, the imitating spirit, is closely related to Jewish speculations about external influence and free will in literature such as the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs and the Community Rule from the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Furthermore, it is argued that the author – much like Philo of Alexandria - presents Pronoia – the providence of god - as an extension of God, a concept which preserves his transcendence and at the same time allows him to intervene in earthly activities. Similarly, the imitating spirit, which is also presented as identical to fate, works as an extension of the demiurge. As a result of this reading of the text, the dualism between God’s providential activities carried out by Pronoia and the influence of fate over mankind, carried out by the imitating spirit, becomes more evident and radical.

It has recently been argued that the discourse of enslavement under fate only was applied to “the other” and that it was used primarily to draw boundary demarcations between the own group and the ones outside it. In this essay, I go against this hypothesis and suggest that the threat of enslavement under fate primarily appears in conjunction with paraenetic discourse and is used to exhort the followers to emulate a certain behavior.

    Abstract [en]

The Jesuit missionary St. Francis Xavier was the first European missionary to embark Japan in 1549. His letters show us how he depicted the Japanese faith. Thiis papers´ main question has revolved around how we can better understand Xaviers depictions of the Japanese faith in his correspondence to his peers. Until today, many scholars have been taking for granted that Xavier described this, for him, alien beliefs as separate religions. Xaviers depictions revolves overall around major differences labelled such as idolatry, heathendom and demon worship. In the light of critical religion theory and hermeneutic method the study shows that Xavier most likely did not regard the Japanese teachings as religions at all. This kind of “labels” was rather a way to express something that was not regarded as a separate religion.

    Abstract [en]

The subject of religion in Swedish schools is the single most talked about topic in the curriculum. One explanation could be that it is the oldest subject in Swedish schools and the topic has undergone the biggest change through time. This process of change has been anything but undebated. The subject of religion within schools has met debates through almost its entire history, partly from the state and from the church, but also from the teachers and the students. Debates concerning the existence of Christianity in Swedish schools as well as the Swedish traditions constantly reoccur in today’s government debates and various media but in different versions. The focus of this essay is to tackle these historical debates through the last century. The essay starts with the training plan of 1919 and continues through the 20th century to the current curriculum in 2013. The aim of the essay is to examine how the changing role of the subject of religion is viewable through the ongoing debates in the 20th century as well as the beginning of the 21st century. The essay tries to understand contemporary debates in the light of the social and educational bureaucratic changes that have occurred over the past decade against a background of long historical changes.

Zaynab bint Jaḥsh in 20th century English biographies on the life of the prophet Muḥammad2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The prophet Muḥammad’s marriage to Zaynab bint Jaḥsh has been viewed as one of the more controversial events in the life of Muḥammad. In the West, Christian authors have long used the events surrounding the marriage to attack Muḥammad’s character, suggesting a lack of morals and unquenchable sexual appetite.

This thesis explores whether these negative portrayals of the marriage has been carried over into modern depictions of Muḥammad’s life. A close examination of the historical sources and a discussion of the concept of “Orientalism” precede an analysis of three prominent 20th century English biographies of Muḥammad’s life.

The thesis concludes that there is little in way of “Orientalism” to be found in these works. Instead, the authors examined go to great length to exonerate Muḥammad from any immoral acts, motives or intentions, with regard to his marriage to Zaynab bint Jaḥsh.

    Abstract [en]

Swedish students in the upper secondary school will recieve informaition regarding religion from multiple sources. If we look past the students surroundings like the family, friends or multimedia school is still the primary arena for religous education. Discussions about religion will take place in other lessons than just the subject religion. History is in my opinion the subject closest related to religion and the two makes up for a lot of the values work in swedish schools. Textbooks is still one of the most important tools for education and that makes them important as objects to study. This essay examines how religion is portrayed in textbooks for the history courses in swedish upper secondary schools. By using a qualitative text analysis I have been able to identify and discuss a few important issues that future teachers have to be aware of. The most apparent issue is how the presentation of Islam differs from other religions. Knowledge about how the textbooks present religion makes it possible for teachers and students to critically analyze the texts they are working with.

Tearing Down the Secular: Religion and violence in the reporting of the Ayodhya dispute by the Swedish daily press 1986-20022014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Using a discourse analytical method with the discourse theoretical framework of Laclau and Mouffe, this thesis aims to study the changing discourse of religion and violence in the Swedish media, and how this is presented in the Swedish daily press’s reporting of the Ayodhya dispute in India during the period 1986-2002; the dispute is often cited as a typical example of the religious violence between Hindus and Muslims in India, which has plagued the country for centuries. This study would argue, in relation to the trends observed in the studied material, that the discourse of religious violence seems to become an established part of the Swedish daily press’s discourse sometime during the latter part of the 1990’s, and that the discourse itself is characterized by a tendency to portray religion and religiosity in a dichotomy with the secular, where the secular state is depicted as being in an antagonistic relationship with fanatical and violent religiosity, which is constantly threatening to tear it apart.

The Hermetic Piety of the Mind: A Semiotic and Cognitive Study of the Discourse of Hermes Trismegistos2003Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The present work explores how the concept mind is used in the discourse of Hermes Trismegistos for the bringing forth of a Hermetic piety of mind, which culminates in mystical vision and in the divinization of the initiand. In focus are some constitutive elements of a religious discourse stemming from Hellenistic and Roman Egypt, and which has survived largely in the form of spiritually instructive dialogues, written in the name of Hermes Trismegistos or in the names of those associated with him.

Thus, the work analyzes the semiotic and cognitive processes and basic components of a discourse that intended to capture and to transport the mind of the reader into a particular story world, thereby conveying a persuasive ‘presence’ of the unlimited and divine, so that this fictive world became the true version of the world. The reading and performance of the dialogues aimed at the passage of the initiand into the state of being a Hermetist, who has been reborn in nous, and who has been liberated from the physical body. Such a Model Reader perceives the All with the eye of nous, i.e. from and by the omniscient vision of the mind of God.

In particular, the work studies how the conceptual metaphors of the discourse use the body and the perceptions of the senses as a source-domain for the description of the target domain: an unlimited and incorporeal existence into which the mind of the reader is initiated.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to study the contents of two upper secondary school textbooks in religious studies and more specifically, to study the representation of the books among world religions. The first of the textbooks is Swedish. It has been written out of a non-confessional context. The second book is Finnish and it has its foundation on a religious confessional context. To do this the following questions were answered: Are the contents of the textbooks affected by their confession or non-confession? Are different religions presented in different ways in the two textbooks? What are the similarities between the two textbooks? How much space in the textbooks are each religion given, and are they equally divided? How much of the religions ethics are being presented? Are any of the religions compared to Christianity in order to facilitate the student’s understanding? The method applied while commencing this study was content analysis. The results showed greater differences within each textbook, rather than the two compared to each other. Both textbooks showed signs of confessional influence.

Living Shi'ism: Instances of Ritualisation among Islamist Men in Contemporary Iran2003Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Iranian Shi‘ism is, among other things, known for its rituals of sorrow. In the contemporary Iranian context, active participation in these rituals has become a sign of support for the Islamist regime. The aim of this study is to discuss the ritual activities in the lives of a group of supporters of the regime. It seeks to explore the purposes and meanings of intense ritual commitment among Islamist individuals on a grass-roots level. Based on interviews with five individuals and fieldwork in their mosque community in Esfahān during the years 1999–2003, the study characterises different levels of meaning in their ritual activity.

To begin with, there is a canonical level of meaning, a framework of Islamic theology and law in which religiously prescribed conduct has its given place and purpose. In the community of my informants, this canonical meaning is conveyed at public gatherings that are lead by religious authorities. The paramount concept discussed at these meetings is virtue, taqvā. At lectures, Koran classes and prayer meetings ritual activity is related to ambition to uphold moral purity in a world of temptations.

To a certain extent the values, ideas and modes of conduct that are promoted by the authorities become the thoughts and behaviour of the individual informants. This hap-pens through a social authorisation process. Although the informants are much aware of canonical meanings they also construe ritual activities in their own personal ways. They find meanings which, although they do not necessarily contradict the canonical ones, are related to the informants’ own life situations. Hence, there is also a self-referential level of meaning in the ritual activity. This level differs between the various individuals and may change from one time to another.

Finally, there is an embodied meaning in ritual activity which is difficult to verbalise. Ritual is not only performed ideas, but also bodily experience in its own right. The strongly emotional rituals to which my informants are committed are clear examples of this as they are experienced in and expressed through the body. The meaning of ritual, then, is created through a conglomeration of the culturally conveyed canonical interpreta-tions of life and of the informants’ own embodied experiences.

This study aims to take a closer look at how women in the Jewish tradition are portrayed in two Judith Plaskows books, Standing again at Sinai and The coming of Lilith: Essays on feminism, Judaism, and sexual ethics, 1972-2003. The way that Plaskow presents women in her books will be compared to Geraldine Brooks's book Nine parts of desire and Mohammad Fazlhashemis book Vems islam? and their portrayal of women in the Islamic culture. The study uses one of the interdisciplinary theories called intersectional theory to critically examine the chosen literature. The issues the study will try to answer are based upon the theory. The issues are: 1) how are women perceived in the Jewish and Muslim communities according to the different authors? 2) What aspects do the authors believe has affected the outcome of women's position within religious communities? 3) Do the authors mention men and if they have affected women's discourse? And if mentioned do they believe men's influence was/is positive or negative?

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to study how Utbildningsradion’s movies about religion differ in content, how the individuals are presented, how the individuals present compared to the expert and if the movies fulfils the pedagogic aims of

Utbildningsradion. Three movies of the series “Jude”, “Muslim”, and “Kristen”, included in “UR-val: Swedish as a second language”, are analyzed through a film analysis and a comparative analysis method. Each movie consists of a religious individual who presents his/her religion, and the historian of religion Christer Hedin who gives a comprehensive picture. The thesis concludes that the presentation of the individuals differ, a clear orientalism emerges as the Christian youth is presented as more western than the other youths. The pedagogic ambitions and aim of the movies are achieved in some manner, but not entirely.

    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the presentation of Islam in textbooks used in the study of religion in high schools. The papers focus on two main questions concerning the ways in which Islam is presented in the analysed textbooks, and how the new curriculum has influenced the portrayal of Islam in the materials. Here, the paper utilizes a method of critical discourse analysis with Faircloughs three-dimensional analysis. The paper then concludes that the presentation of Islam is negative in nature, with the content and view of Islam having been simplified and stereotyped. Often the textbooks studied frame Islam as being an aggressive and oppressive religion, especially in matters con-cerning women. Furthermore, the descriptions given in textbooks can be interpreted as presenting the content of the Islamic faith as fundamentally incompatible with the values of the Swedish society. This paper claims that the wider impact of these teach-ings can be found in how we speak, write, and talk about Islam in the Swedish society. In order to overcome this, constructive discussions both in and around the content provided in the textbooks are necessary, especially in areas where such negative views of Islam are presented.

    Abstract [en]

In 2015 Skolverket presented a study which said that new editions of textbooks are too alike the old editions, and therefore have difficulties to meet the educational requirements set by Lgy11. The aim of this study is therefore to analyze how the textbooks Under samma himmel and Religion: för gymnasiet 1 portrays Judaism, Christianity and Islam to see if they reach a specific goal of Lgy11. The method that is used in this study to analyze these textbooks is a content analysis. The result of the study showed that both textbooks did not reach the goals of Lgy11. Christianity got the most space in the textbook and was portrayed as a heterogeneous religion, which may have its explanation in the exceptional position the religion has in Lgy11. Judaism although was portrayed as a Swedish religion due to lack of information about Judaism abroad, and Islam was portrayed as a homogenous religion due to lack of extended information about its different groups and ways to interpreted the religion. Therefore, the textbooks do not meet the requirements of Lgy11 and needs to be supplemented to meet the educational goals.

Shofaren - ett Guds instrument: Ett unikt ljud att hörsamma2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the shofar and it´s relation to classical music in modern and contemporary time, and examine the cause of this interest in the western world among composers and musicians, namely the unique sound. The origins of the shofar stems from the Tanakh as a sacred ritual instrument and as a marketer of time up until today. Through rabbinic efforts of interpreting and preserving the authentic doctrines it has survived throughout millennia.

With this newfounded interest conflicts and discussions of whether the shofar should be contained within its jewish sacred context of frame or whether it should be allowed to be used in profane music jewish or otherwise. With this paper I want to bring attention to the complex situation of the use of shofar and it´s motives in a profane world. Is it possible to take the shofar out of its traditional jewish context and maintain its reverence and authentic status of dignity. Through hermeneutic method these issues will be highlighted.

    Deconstructing Constructive Alignment2014Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Swedish Higher Education has formally no central curriculum (Lindberg -Sand 2004) . The education is regulated by the Higher Education Act and The Higher Education Ordinance . In the international area of educational development however, a few theoretical concepts are considered and treated as a kind of normative structure for how educational processes should be understood. Some of these central concepts are constructive alignment (Biggs 2011), the epistemological taxonomies of Bloom ( Bloom 1956 ; Krahtwohl - Bloom - Masia , eds. , 1965; Anderson - Krahtwohl - Bloom, eds. 2001) and the distinction between surface and deep learning ( Marton - Dahlgren Säljö 2005). In Academic Teacher Training courses these concepts are often used as a kind of theoretical structure to present what university teaching is all about, what it aims at and what is relevant perspectives and knowledge. Some of these concepts have even served as tools for the Swedish authorities' transformation of higher education through the Bologna process and the starting point for the University Chancellor Office when it comes to quality assurances ( www.ond.vlaanderen.be / hogerunderwijs / bologna , http://www.uk-ambetet.se/utbildningskvalitet ) . They can thus be described as key elements in the University curriculum code , if code could be understood as the principle around how education should be understood , organized and evaluated ( cf. Lundgren 1989). The professional category of Swedish educational developers have taken on the role as change agents in HE. They have used these concepts as theoretical foundations , models and tools for change. These concepts have strongly influenced how university teachers today looks at the phenomena of teaching, learning and education. The concepts are also fairly unquestioned within the educational development field . They can be described as dominant concepts, even hegemonic , because their alternatives are absent and invisible, even internationally. The purpose of this session is to stimulate discussion among educational developers and academics on one of the fundamental and dominant theoretical concepts in Higher Education, namely constructive alignment. The idea is to stimulate critical reflection on the risks associated with using only a few theoretical concepts in higher education. They perhaps force us to consider HE from limited perspectices? An apparent consensus on the basic concepts are hindering creative educational development , if we do not only want to harmonize and standardize education. Together we will discuss some of the basic assumptions behind constructive alignment and problematize its hegemonic status and try to identify any interests which might underlie its impact. I will also suggest some alternatives , if one wants to make the more exploratory, situation-specific and exploratory nature of pedagogy visible. My point is that all concepts are intellectual tools that help us to see and do things. A truly scientific approach to educational development and university teaching should be characterized by critical debate about its fundamental concepts. In this session we will discuss alternatives to the approach connected to constructive alignment and map some questions that could be raised from this discussion and adressed globally.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay compares two series of RE-textbooks written for secondary school students in Finland and Sweden. The aim of the essay is to come to a greater understanding of the similarities and differences between confession based and non-confessional religious education. The essay answers two questions, how Protestantism, Catholicism and Orthodox Christianity is represented in the books and how the different Christian churches are described in relation to the Finnish and Swedish society today. The results show that the Swedish textbook series describes the churches differently compared to each other, while the books from Finland portraits them in a more similar way. The Swedish books also focus more on secularism, and mediate a picture of the Swedish society today as non-religious. The Finnish textbooks present a picture of a society with a changing, not decreasing, religiosity.

Inga Gudar Jämte Mig: Modern islamisk ikonoklasm och dess teoretiska grunder2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In march 2001 and fourteen years later in march 2015, destructive acts were carried out against some of our most revered and treasured religious sites. These cultural heritages were demolished in modern iconoclastic acts by extremist groups in Afghanistan and Iraq. This essay examines the demolition of the two statues depicting the Buddha as well as the events in Iraq during 2015. Specifically the destruction of the museum of Mosul, the ancient city of Nimrud as well as other sites of cultural heritages. The acts were carried out by two groups who in very different ways revere their actions as connected to the sacred. On the one hand this was done to communicate devotion towards the divine. The other action was done in order to destroy the sacred of the perceived enemy as well as to enhance the iconoclastic groups' own theocracy. The two groups have a sense of historical connection with similar acts of iconoclastic destructions. Historical events will be discussed in relation to their modern counterparts.

This essay attempts to locate the theoretical core of these events and tries to explain why they might be regarded as emanating from the theocratic functional systems' need to restore and reproduce itself. I will also, like the responsible groups themselves, set the actions in relation to the relevant international context as well as the historical parallels of iconoclasm. The tendencies to regard these matters as a destructive act based upon absolute reverence to the divine are the most frequent reactions usually brought to the surface regarding these actions. This essay describes the relevant context regarding the destruction of these religious monuments and determines what type of binary codes these actions revolves around. I also add a possible environment of the recipient, which can either be profane or transcendent. The conclusion is that the events in Bamiyan, March 2001, are best viewed as instrumental orientations of actions where the greater goal is the purpose of the act. The environment which the actors attempts to communicate with is the international community and therefore the profane. The events in Mosul/Nimrud on the other hand might more accurately be described as expressive actions where the purpose of the actions are fulfilled by the act itself. The environment which the act attempts to communicate with is in this case a divine entity and therefore the sacred
