    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this essay the aim is to examine what an analysis of records of the Swedish phenomenon called the “mara” or nightmare can tell us about gender relations in the nineteenth century Swedish peasant society. From Snorre Sturlasson to studies done in the present day I go through records and the people who has written them for answers to my questions. I use the methods sex/gender and Michel Foucault’s perspective of power and my main material I study is records from DAG.With this essay I take you through methods, and descriptions of the “mara”. I also take a closer look on the people who has written down what the people thought and their believes about the “mara” during the nineteenth century. I also take a closer look on the books that has been followed by the recorders.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

My aim of this investigation has been to study Delacroix relation to the Orient, based on a number of key questions:

    • What was specific for Delacroix oriental works?
    • How did his oriental painting change and mature over time?
    • How was Delacroix relation to the oriental discourse?

The paper is divided into three parts: the time before his trip to Morocco in 1832, the trip to Morocco and the period after Morocco.

Although many have wanted to see Delacroix as a revolutionary, he worked the whole time within, and dialogue with, the classical tradition. In Delacroix quest for renewal of history painting, the oriental works play an important role. In the period before his trip to Morocco the literary sources dominated. He constructed his own Orient in his studio.

It is clear that Delacroix did not stood outside the oriental discourse. We see the same construction of the Orient, the same racist stereotypes and the same quest for historic authenticity as in other oriental painting from this period. But he mixes it with one, perhaps reluctant, admiration for "the other".

As a result of the French colonization of Algeria Delacroix got the chance to see the East for himself in 1832. He accompanied Count Mornay on a diplomatic mission to Morocco. Here Delacroix found a synthesis of classicism and romantic-oriental painting. He abandoned his quest for accuracy and focused on what is important in the painting, the poetic beauty, which spoke directly to the viewer.

After returning from Morocco, he turned away from the literary and historical sources for his oriental motifs and focused on his sketch books from the trip. That he focused on contemporary motifs distinguishes him from many of his contemporaries.

He painted a large number of paintings with motifs from Morocco. There are two motives which dominate: Moroccans who are fighting, and Moroccans resting in the shade. This double image of “the other” as both violent and uncontrolled, and lazy, is close to the racist stereotypes that were common in Europe.

Monumental painting became Delacroix principal focus after homecoming from Morocco. His proposal for decoration of entrance hall to the Palais Bourbon was a tribute to France's colonial mission. But in a draft of his memoirs from the trip to North Africa, he criticized the conduct of the French army in Algeria. One could interpret it as Delacroix did approve of the colonization of North Africa but baulked at its consequences. That he like many other French people wanted to enjoy the fruits of colonization, but did not want to see the human suffering it caused.

    Ultra High Resolution 4K/8K Real-time CG System and Its Application2013Ingår i: Proceedings of IWAIT2013, 2013, s. 4-Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We propose an 'Ultra-CG project' which promotes an extreme high-definition real-time computer graphics system with a resolution of 4K and 8K (Super Hi-Vision) which is more than the conventional HDTV. It is important for the project to study not only hardware and software requirements but also content creation methodology with which the content is displayed on extreme high-resolution display. We have first developed a functioning test system, which exhibits 'Virtual Museum' in 4K resolution to assess validity of our approach and clarify the tasks toward the further application development. The system consists of a PC with high-speed graphics cards and a 4K monitor. The real-time 3DCG software and all the CG models are built on Unity, which is a 3DCG game engine, used worldwide. We are now considering various feasible applications built on the system such as exhibition, entertainment, medical use and more. This paper describes the test system, discusses the future applications and collaboration of content creators and system engineers.

Virtual Museum on 4K Ultra-high Resolution Real-time CG System2013Ingår i: Proceedings of Virtual Reality Technical Seminar, 2013Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

We have researched and developed a 'Virtual Museum' in an extreme high-definition real-time computer graphics system with a resolution of 4K and 8K (Super Hi-Vision). We have first developed a functioning test system, which exhibits Japanese artifacts 'Ukiyoe and pannel' in 4K resolution. In our system, the artifacts have been digitized in ultra high-resolution then positioned in a high-quality modeled exhibition space. A user can walkthrough in the exhibition space enabling to view the artifacts in a distance and also to get closer to observe its detailed surface seamlessly. With this method, we have successfully enhanced both sense of being there and sense of realness. In this paper, we first survey several virtual museums in practical use, then explain the detail of our system and introduce experiment results with discussion in comparison with the existing virtual museums.

Implementation of T2V: Text-To-Visio on Game Engine UNITY2013Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

We have been developing T2V (Text-To-Vision) technology which enables to produce CG animation from given script. We have developed the application called 'T2V Player' and have been distributed it as freeware for years. The application works on Windows PC to produce TV-program-like animation from user input text using real-time CG and voice synthesizing technique, etc. In this paper, we introduce the prototype of 'T2V on UNITY' which has been developed from scratch on the UNITY game engine. We succeeded to enhance its function owing to the UNITY, such as multi-platform, availability of CG character data circulated on UNITY community, capability of applying T2V method to game development and more.

Två svenska socknar omkring nödåret 1867: en jämförelse i befolkningsutvecklingen2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Exploring Game Design Pitfalls through patterns: Experiences when making our first game2012Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this report is to analyze what went wrong with the adventure game project called Fairytale, I started together with 4 of my fellow university students at Gotland University, spring 2007. My ambition with this report is to enlighten problems in game design that arose during the game development process in order to prevent others from making the same mistakes.

The problems are analyzed according to game design patterns defined by Björk, S. and Holopainen, J. (2005). Patterns in Game Design. Boston, Massachusetts. Jenifer Niles. The game was exhibited to the public at Gotland Game Awards 2007, Leipzig Game Developers Conference 2007, Tekniska Museet 2007, Almedalsveckan 2008 and Gotland Game Awards 2008.

The results of the report show that redesigning already finished game features means a lot of troubles in relation to its dependency on other game elements. The key abilities of the main character were vaguely defined since the beginning of the project which caused problems with earlier designed levels whenever a new item was introduced. The terrain of the prior levels didn’t match the abilities of the new items, which forced changes to be made. The biggest mistake with this project was that finished game elements never were considered final.

My role in the project was the solo game programmer and co-designer. I shared the designing tasks together with Annika Fogelgren who also was the producer of our team. Albertina Sparrhult, Emma Johansson and Marie Viberg were our core graphic artists. Together, we created the Fairytale game.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The written sources concerning the process of christianization in Sweden has for a long time been limited to two main texts, Rimberts vita of St. Ansgarius and Adam of Bremen´s History of the bishops of Hamburg. This is due to a rigid source criticism in the beginning of the 20th century, which put other material – in particular the norse sagas – out of consideration. The last twenty years however, new questions have been raised concerning the christianization, partly because of new archaeological findings, new interpretations of the significance of runic stones and the recent debate about the formation of the Swedish medieval kingdom. The subject has been discussed from many different angles, and with a lot of scholarly effort.

This text raises the question whether the christianization of Sweden was a peaceful or violent process, and investigates the possibility of answering the question through an analysis of all the relevant written material available and in the light of recent archaeological findings. There are several methodological problems pertaining to written material from the early middle ages which are raised and discussed. The sources are initially presented from a critical viewpoint, and then the material is analyzed with a matrix construed from the categories Wortmission, Tatmission, and Schwertmission, each with subdivisions drawn from the texts. The author contends that the source material conclusively supports that the christianization was a violent process and also a fairly rapid one.

    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to give an account of, and to discuss the view-points and theories of different researchers on the christianization of Sweden, especially the province of Öland, during the early middle ages. Its purpose is to investigate how, and in what sense, their positions can be said to correspond to what we may know of the historical “facts”. This will be possible by comparing different points of view with a study of the development in a single parish. An overall difficulty however, is the nature of the sources relating to the time in question, they are scarce or even non-existent.

Part I of the paper consists of an outline of the field of research and the different theories put forward on the subject. The account is thematic, since there are several different problematic areas linked to the subject of Sweden’s christianization that each needs separate attention – though they all are, of course, interrelated. The account continues in part II, but with the focus on the iron-age society of Öland, its social, administrative and economic structure, and the major societal change that occurred roughly around AD 1000 – a change wherein the christianization was an important aspect. Part III consists of a micro-study of Föra parish in the north of Öland through the years 400-1300 approximately. Finally, part IV gives a summary and the results of the study in part III are compared to relevant theories and view-points discussed in parts I and II.

The conclusions that can be drawn from the comparison are A) Some of the view-points can be seen as tentatively confirmed (and some others as refuted), and B) An extended comparative approach could serve as an instrument for shaping theoretical models with a higher level of generality, since the comparison also shows that the results of historical research often is governed by a theoretical bias, even when empirical material is incomplete, corroborated or contradictory to the results.

    Abstract [en]

This essay deals with the diseases osteoporosis and osteoarthritis in a medieval population from Visby in Sweden. The aim has been to evaluate to what extent and in what way these diseases have influenced the people of a relatively large harbour town during the Middle Ages. 24 individuals were analysed osteologicaly and 19 of them became subject for measurements of bone density through DEXA readings. Furthermore four individuals were x-rayed based on external differences due to osteoarthritis and a change in the depression at the base of the medial surface of the greater trochanter. Similar studies have been made in Trondheim, Norway and Wharram Percy, Great Britain. These were exceedingly larger than the study made for this essay and showed a higher number of individuals with the above mentioned diseases, compared to only one individual with osteopenia, a precursor of osteoporosis, and two individuals with osteoarthritis in the population from Visby. Additionally reasons for a population to be effected by the diseases has been evaluated and discussed. Climate and geology have been suggested as having an impact on the frequency of osteoporosis in a population as well as heredity.  For osteoarthritis a theoretical connection has been made to the changes in the trochanteric fossa.

Hunner eller heruler?: Skånes kontinentala kontakter under folkvandringstid2012Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The intention of this paper is to explore the contacts between the Swedish province of Scania and Southeastern Europe in the Migration Period. This has been done through comparative studies of four object categories. Parallels to glass, horse trappings, jewellery with inlays and sword decorations found in Scania have been studied in southeastern and centralEurope, as well as the cultures of peoples involved in the Migration processes. The conclusion is that contacts were upheld in several ways: through trade, exchange, alliances and gifts. Old trade routes along the Vistula were used in the south-easterly direction to the Pontic area but were changed to the Moravian Gatein the latter half of the period, while westerly routes probably worked most of the time. The Heruls are thought to have been an important link between Scandinavia,Southeastern Europeand the Huns.

Flexibla förpackningar2010Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the existence of two different discourses on the causes of the wars in former Yugoslavia 1991-1995 in the editorial pages in Swedish newspapers. One discourse is titled "ancient hatreds" and explains the wars as a result of old historical ethnic conflicts typical of the "Balkans" and the second discourse, "poor political leadership," explains the wars as a result of deliberately conducted nationalistic policies by political leaders.

Parallel to this discourse analysis is a media theory perspective of how news is selected and processed in the newspaper's editorial texts.

The paper also examines the link between each discourse and a specific view on the necessity of foreign military intervention in former Yugoslavia.

The starting point of the investigation are two high-profile events in 1995 and the impact they made in the 29 editorial texts in the metropolitan newspapers that were studied.

The paper shows that none of the discourses clearly dominated in these editorial texts and that a clear link between a certain discourse and the advocated measure in the form of foreign intervention couldn´t be established in the material as a whole. However, the four texts that clearly belonged to the "ancient hatreds" discourse were all in favour of foreign military intervention.

The essay concludes that there is evidence of a medial feedback which means that the news to a high degree influences what is discussed in the editorials and that the evaluation and selection of news, is similar in all the studied newspapers.

Ryggsträckare2010Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Introduction to the Architectural Conservation Project for the Facades of the Royalty Palace of Stockholm2011Ingår i: XXIIIrd International CIPA Symposium, Prague, Czech Republic, September 12 - 16, 2011 / [ed] Karel Pavelka, 2011Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Sweden’s foremost architectural monument, the Royal Palace of Stockholm, is now officially the object of a profoundly large architectural heritage conservation project. Such projects are always challenging on many levels, not only because monuments are unique structures, but also because all actions and interventions need to be well justified, optimal, and ultimately acceptable to the public. The project for the conservation of the Royal Palace is estimated to last for the next 22 years and it includes a set of sub-programs, one of which is the “Long-term maintenance of the facades”. Focusing on the sub-program for the long-term maintenance of the facades, the authors discuss aspects related to the research that was carried out in order to investigate the structure, to suggest and justify required interventions. Additionally, methods applied to geometrically document the structure are presented here along with reflections on the information management system that will be employed so as to accommodate the documentation needs and information flow for this massive project. The entire case study is presented in conjunction to the ICOMOS “Recommendations for the analysis, conservation and structural restoration of architectural heritage” in an effort to highlight important aspects of the investigation and the decision making process.

    Abstract [en]

During the Nordic Bronze Age, houses were not exclusively connected with profane contexts, but did also feature in burial places, a peculiar fact when considering the careful separation of settlements and graves. What kind of houses do we find in these sacred contexts? What did these houses stand for? Why was the house symbolism chosen to accompany the dead? And why did the house symbolism flourish during the Nordic Bronze Age? To answer these questions three representatives for the house symbolism in Sweden are discussed in more detail, such as the burial in longhouses, peculiar houses called cult houses and house urns. Further, the phenomenon has been put in its temporal, geographic, social and ideological context, where aspects such as trade and settlement structure are presented. The house symbolism is, however, not confined to northern Europe. Through comparison with contemporary parallels in southern Europe and ethnohistoric analogies different possible viewpoints are detected.

WindSim Study of Hybrid Wind Farm in Complex Terrain2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

A annual nergy production analysis was undertaken to compare wind resources and annual energy production as estimated by WAsP and Windsim. Nordex Sverige AB has designed a wind farm with the help of WAsP and this study will involve the examination of this site with Windsim. Two site formations are of interest, one with the same class of turbine and one with a mix of two turbine types. The study is interested in the effect on annual energy production as estimated by the different software of employing a hybrid layout using wind turbines of different height. The results showed that whilst initial estimations of total energy production without wake losses appear very similar between WAsP and Windsim the ways in which the software are treating individual turbines within the planned farm can be quite different because of different physics. The analysis of the „hybrid‟ turbine layout showed significant increases in estimated annual energy production when a turbine with a higher tower and larger rotor diameter was used in a hybrid arrangement. Estimated annual energy losses on the turbines that were not changed in favour of a larger turbine were small. However, no great benefit in estimated turbine efficiency was achieved through the mixing of turbine types with different hub heights. The gains in annual energy production estimated by both software are however significant with increased production of 18 % across the entire farm when comparing the „hybrid‟ layout to a farm based on only the smaller of the two turbine types.

    Abstract [sv]

Indoor climate and energy efficiency in museums2011Ingår i: Energy Efficiency in Historic Buildings, Visby, February 2011., 2011Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The easy way to save energy in museums is to turn off the ventilation and in some cases even the humidification. The ongoing international discussion about indoor climate recommendations for museums opens up for a more relaxed and realistic view of the need for air conditioning. The first step to increase energy efficiency in museums must be to critically study the performance of the HVAC plant as well as the running hours. The second step may be to identify the real ventilation need – are there for example 50 or 500 visitors before lunch in the museum? And do we really need to follow the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendation of maximum 1000 ppm CO2? The third step may be to turn off the HVAC plant for periods during night and day and at the same time keep track of the indoor climate. This paper is about intermittent running of plants, and as an example is the operation of the 30 years old HVAC plant at the Museum of Ethnography in Stockholm discussed.

    Abstract [en]

Sweden has had a long lasting connection with the Ottoman Empire. From the Viking age to the 18th century warfare and cooperation has been ongoing. Even the Silk Road was a time extended to the Baltic. That means 1000 years of cultural contacts. After the battle at Mohacs in Hungary 1687, Swedish soldiers and officers looted the Ottoman war baggage. A great number of objects, today artefacts, were transported to Sweden. Among them, in the collection of Skokloster Castle, we will today find tents with carpets, used by high ranking Ottoman officers as well as high-tech composite bows used by cavalry soldiers. This paper discusses why the mentioned textiles and wooden objects, made for use in the Mediterranean climate, has survived so well for more than 300 years in the Baltic climate far north in Europe.

Skokloster Castle is a heavy stone and brick building without any climatisation. The castle has only open fireplaces and ovens and they have not been used for the last 300 years. There is no electric lighting installed why visitors have to admire the 17th century interior design and the large paintings collection in daylight, summertime only. We have here a very good example of preventive conservation by passive means. The main philosophy of the conservators and curators working at Skokloster Castle with the large collection (50 000 items) is to “let it rest in peace”. The indoor climate at Skokloster castle has been under observation for generations. The castle and its collections were turned into an entailed estate already in 1701 by the owner Margareta Juliana Wrangel, the oldest daughter and heir of the founder of Skokloster castle. This was for tax reasons but also to preserve the memory of her great father, the fieldmarchal. That means that by law the proprietors had to write detailed inventories for every generation of owners. Thus today´s conservators and curators have a detailed history of the preservation climate and the conditions of every object in the collection. The indoor climate follows the outdoor over the season. Stormy weather increases the air infiltration and disturbs the stable indoor climate. Subsequently warm summers may create high relative humidity which is a risk for growing mould. Never- theless the mayor part of the collection is in good condition. Today we have year long observations of temperature, relative humidity and air change rate in the castle, which will be presented and discussed in the paper.

This paper intends to invite to a discussion of best preventive climate and conservation actions having the coming climate change in mind.

    Abstract [en]

Skokloster castle, located north of Stockholm, has a rich collection of furnishing and decorative objects of various kinds dating back to the 17th century. The castle has no active climate control. The objective of this paper is to investigate the deterioration of selected objects correlated to outdoor climate over a 300 year period and to analyse the preservation strategy chosen at Skokloster. The results show that the selected object overall were in good condition, as the were selected to represent the whole collection this would indicate a major part of the collection has been relatively well preserved and that the strategy of “doing nothing” has been favourable.

    Abstract [en]

This essay deals with Swedish unemployment politics during the period 1918-1932, and can be seen as a contribution to earlier research of how the policies, established by the State Unemployment Commission, was carried out at a local level. This study bears upon  Uddevalla municipality, a town in the southwestern part of Sweden, which had about 13,700 inhabitants in 1920.

The research was conducted in Uddevalla municipality archives, and the sources used are above all municipal records and documents from the local unemployment committee. The measures taken by the local committee to reduce the effects of unemployment have then been compared with the directives of the State Unemployment Commission.

The survey shows that the local unemployment committee, at least during the first half of the 1920s, was very keen to follow the directives of the State Unemployment Commission, and they also tried to charge the municipality's economy as little as possible. The local policy was often even more restrictive than the demands from the State Unemployment Commission. During a few years in the middle of the 1920s, when the unemployment was relatively low, most of the unemployed did not recieve any help at all.

The restrictive policy, however, led to an increasing distress among the unemployed, and the poor relief had to give financial help to a lot of unemployed and their families. The unemployment committee became then a little bit more active and generouos in its policy towards the unemployed.

The political majority in Uddevalla municipality was changed in the period, but the changes that occurred in the local unemployment policy does not appear to be linked to political governance, but rather to the untenable situation of the unemployed which was no longer to ignore.

    Abstract [en]

In May 1675, the local court in the northern Swedish parish of Nordingrå, which had approximately 1,000 inhabitants, held a preliminary investigation on 113 persons accused of witch-craft and superstition. For the majority of the 113, the main accusation was to have travelled to Blåkulla, a place where witches according to Swedish folklore participated in satanic festivities and rites led by the Devil himself. The preliminary investigation was held at the request of The Royal Witch-craft Commission. Nordingrå belonged to the province of Ångermanland, one of the Swedish provinces with the highest number of witch trials in the 1670s. The trials in Nordingrå have, more or less never been examined before, mainly due to the fact that no sentences or penalties were ever imposed.

The purpose of this paper is to examine social relations and social conflicts in Nordingrå with the records from the witch trial 1675 as the primary source. The theoretical background for the paper is Emmanuel Le Roy Laduries study of the Occitan village of Montaillou along with Hannah Arendts theory on the banality of evil.

One of the paper´s main conclusion is that the relations of power can be traced in the trials, but that they, on the other hand, become less significant the further the trials go. One reasonable interpretation of this fact is that the trials in Nordingrå reflects the tendence of juridical centralization in the 17th century.

The social conflicts in the parish are more obvious in the accusations of superstitions than in the accusations of travels to Blåkulla. For example the conclusion can be drawn that at least a number of inhabitants in Nordingrå had a religion on their own, which did not always match the orthodoxy of the Protestant church. At the same time the accusations of superstition do not play a particularly important role in the trials. The main impression of the trials is, on the contrary, that they do not follow a given pattern regarding who can be put on trial, except for the fact that most of the trialed were women. Against the accused, a number of at least 173 witnesses appeared, most of them children and young people under the age of 24. The witnesses in general did not only tell the court which crimes the accused witches had committed, but also which crimes they had committed themselves.

    Abstract [en]

This scientific paper is about the changes in the skeleton caused by the diseases osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Six males and one female from Banken 1, S:ta Gertrud  and S:t Hans in Visby were chosen for an osteological analysis. All individuals are adults and dates back to the middle ages. One male suffered from both osteoporosis and osteoarthritis and one female and three males suffered from osteoarthritis. One male might have been in the beginning faze of osteoarthritis, and one male shows no sign of any of the diseases. In addition to osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, some of the individuals suffer from other pathological conditions. Some of the bones from most of the individuals were x-rayed at Visby hospital, to see if medical technique could show some additional information to the osteological analysis. The x-rays were interpreted by doctor Staffan Jennerholm from Visby hospital, but other doctors have also participated. The x-rays confirmed results from the osteological analysis in most cases, although it showed new information in several cases. Some bones from three individuals were taken to Roland Alvarssons` Doctor Practice in Visby to measure the bone density, to check if any of the individuals had osteoporosis. The result confirmed that one male had osteoporosis, as expected from the osteological analysis.

    Abstract [en]

The University of Gotland has between the years 2006-2011 conducted seminar excavations in Västergarn parish, Gotland. During this time 167 comb fragments have been registered. Out of these are 51 of importance for this study, since they are defined as either a single-sided composite comb or a comb case. The purpose of this thesis is to enlighten the earliest period in the history of Västergarn by focusing on the earliest forms of combs and their cases. And as the title expresses do the combs date to the Viking Age or the Middle Ages? The combs from the excavations will be compared to different type schemes, both Viking Age and Middle Age and different places in Scandinavia such as Lund, Oslo, Lödöse and Gotland. The conclusion of the analysis is that the combs from Västergarn are from the late 11th century to the early 13th century, during the Early Middle Age.

Citizen Wage: a study concerning the perception of citizen wage in Sweden2009Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In this Bachelor paper, I have studied the field of citizen wage, a revolutionary concept that challenges the current system of welfare, our view of society today, which can have implications on our perception of different spaces and patterns of movement between different rooms. The subject has on an academic level been discussed and accepted however not on a political level.

Citizen wage is a concept of a broader meaning of a social security system that entails providing the states citizens with economic subsidy without any form of requirements around it. The subsidy should cover all basic costs of living and be collected through taxation.

The idea is based on principles of human justice, that everyone has the right to a decent living, and the state is therefore obliged to distribute sufficient economic means for living without any conditions, as a right not as a solution.

The main focus of this study has been to investigate the opinions of citizen wage in Sweden, what the main arguments for or against an implementation of citizen wage is perceived to be. This study is based on a literature study concerning subjects relevant when discussing citizen wage, as well as a quantitative study of a number of articles derived from Swedish press concerning the theme.

The study resulted in findings that reflect a mostly negative outlook on citizen wage, however the large amount of positive articles indicate that there is an interest of implementing citizen wage in Sweden. Therefore one can ask if it is representative or not, that citizen wage is no longer found on any parties political agenda in Sweden.

    Abstract [sv]

Re-examining the Traditional Principles of Cinematography of Modern Movies: a Case Study of Children of Men and Clerks II2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis addresses the principles of cinematography and their significance for the visual outcome of a film. The purpose is to examine the importance of the principles for modern film and this is done through a study on how the principles are used and not used in the films Children of Men and Clerks II. The two films investigated are both known for being experimental and modern in their use of cinematography, and was therefore found suitable for this thesis. The limitation with this study is that only the four main principles of cinematography are analysed: camera angles, framings, points of view and camera movement, and they are only analysed in one shot from each film examined.

In the results, the four main principles were investigated when and when not applied in the specific shot from each film. In the film Children of Men the breaking of the principle of point of view was most central, but the principle of framings and camera movement were in some cases also not applied. The only principle actually followed in this shot was the principle of camera angles. In the other film examined, Clerks II, the breaking of the principle of camera movement and camera angles was most central together with the breaking of the 180 degree rule. The principles that were followed in this clip were framings and points of view.

In the conclusion the results were discussed and also the possibility of effects on the viewer, when breaking the principles. Different ideas of possible effects on the viewer were presented, but they all had disorientation in common. The possible outcome of disregarding the principles of cinematography ended up being misleading the viewer away from the narrative.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The bicycle is an individual means of transport. Many people prefer to cycle over short distances and in congested areas rather than take travel by car or public transport. This is a study of the use of bicycle as an option for commuting to work. It is a comparison between three cities: Stockholm, Copenhagen and London. The comparison is focused on solutions that benefit commuter cyclist and performed by studying cycle policies and other related documents. Results of this study shows that bicycle commuters are a targeted group in cycle policies in all three cities, for commuter traffic to increase booth an enhanced sense of security and the opportunity to travel at a high speed by bicycle is important.. In Stockholm and London efforts to increase the number of cyclists begin by improving the quality of transport for those who already cycle. The cycle network in Copenhagen is more comprehensive and the level of bicycle use and commuting is at significant higher level in comparison to Stockholm and London. The possibility to combine cycling and public transport is a target for all three cities, one important measure is to increase bicycle parking facilities at terminals and other public places.

Although there are differences in the three cities regarding bicycle commuting today, targets and measures for the futures they do correspond in quite a few places; parallels that could serve as examples of the ways in which a high degree of bicycle commuting can be attained.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to present and analyze the yearly expenses for Swedish rental apartments during the period 1999 to 2007. At the end, it will give the reader a general picture of how the cost-level has fluctuated depending on the production year when the apartment building was finished, and where the same building is located. This paper has the following questions as a starting point:

    - Can there be an identification of regions depending on where people tend to favor renting an apartment?

    - How are those regions distributed? That is, where are the cost-levels of the yearly rental expenses highest and where are the levels lowest?

Nine statistical surveys from the Swedish government agency Statistics Sweden (Statistiska Centralbyrån) have been used as primary sources for this paper. These surveys deal with price pictures of housing in general, but for this paper the only information that has been used is the one about rental apartments. After analyzing the acquired data it can be established that the highest rental level is found in Stockholm, after that come Göteborg, which is followed by Larger municipalities and at the bottom Smaller municipalities can be observed as having the lowest amount of yearly rental expenses. There could also be observed two major raises in the rental expenses that were common in all four geographical categories in addition to the more even, but substantially smaller, raises that could be observed during the surveys course. The earliest raise could be found in the apartment buildings that were produced in Stockholm after the 1940-s. The same pattern could be followed in Smaller municipalities, Göteborg and Larger municipalities the following decades. The second major raise occurred in a simultaneous similar way in the apartment buildings that were produced during the 1980-s. In this case three of the regions that were in the survey, Stockholm, Göteborg and Large municipalities were found to have an unusual amount of raises in the rental expenses during this decade. The exception were Small municipalities whose rental expenses did not experience the same raise as the other categories in the apartment buildings that were produced until the first part of the 1990-s. The rental levels that were extracted from the surveys made by Statistics Sweden are found as an appendix in the end of this paper.
