    Abstract [en]

This work investigates into the semantics of tense and challenges the traditional view of tense being a grammatical category primarily encoding temporal deixis. Instead, it is proposed that tense expresses a blend of aspect, evidentiality and modality, while temporal deixis claims to be to a great extent an inference drawn on these. A model for describing grammatical aspect is outlined, which emphasizes on the natural boundaries of events, namely their beginning and their end. According to this, an event can be characterized as [±completed] and/or [±begun]. This model also naturally accounts for the “non canonical” uses of tense, as when the past tense is used to describe present or future events, etc. The article focuses on River-Plate Spanish.

Amning, kunskap och självbestämmande: Språkliga och interaktionella perspektiv på amningsrådgivning2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Viking Age rune-carvers and their readers used runes as a semiotic resource to convey and structure the messages on rune-stones. An analysis of the ways in which this resource is used together with other resources gives us a deeper insight into the relationship between writers and readers and into the written culture in which the rune-stones were produced.

The present study treats runic carvings as multimodal texts in which different semiotic modes produce meaning by visual and verbal means. The roles played by runes in such texts are studied from three different perspectives. The empirical study in chapter 3 investigates how the verbal messages of the inscriptions interrelate with ornamental compositions. The most important convention found is that runic inscriptions usually start in the lower left part of the ornamental band in which they are inscribed. A second result is that there is a certain correlation between the visual and syntactic structure of runic texts. In chapter 4, Södermanlandic inscriptions employing more than one writing system are investigated. These carvings can be tied to a context of high social ambition in which at least two different, socially stratified discourses are expressed by means of the runes as a visual semiotic mode. Chapter 5 is devoted to non-lexical inscriptions, showing that such carvings are indeed runic texts despite their lack of verbal message.

Different types of readers can use runic resources in different ways. Firstly, runes carry meaning independent of any verbal message, giving them significance even to illiterate readers. Secondly, literate readers can appreciate certain conventions of runic composition and, thirdly, one and the same runic text can be part of different discourses and hence be aimed at different kinds of readers.

    Abstract [en]

The present study is an attempt to describe Viking Age runestones as a social medium. The argumentation is conducted in three steps. The first part of the paper deals with runestonesʼ communicative potential beyond what is actually written, namely the layout, ornamentation, and use of different writing systems. There is also a small but important group of non-lexical inscriptions that can be used to gain insight into regional literacy and social aspects of the custom of raising runestones. In the second part of the paper, these findings are used to determine whether or not it is feasible to qualify runestones as a social medium. Social media are usually characterised as networks that enable many-to-many communication, and there is good reason to argue that runestones constitute such a network. First, they are written for different kinds of readers, e.g. both literate and illiterate ones, and, second, people of different social groups have been involved in producing runestones. Finally, in the third part of the paper, runestones are compared with the modern social medium of Twitter. The most prominent common trait is connected to individualsʼ social positioning. It is argued in the paper that some of the runestonesʼ semiotic resources are used for ˮself-brandingˮ and thus are similar to hashtags on Twitter. Furthermore, both tweets and runic inscriptions appear to have affiliative functions.

    Abstract [en]

This study discusses how segmentation, both visual and linguistic, is used to structure runic inscriptions. The questions are (1) if there is any correlation in the chosen examples between the visual and the linguistic design, and, if so, (2) how a particular layout adds meaning to the verbal message. Studies are conducted on two small sets of Upplandic and Södermanlandic runestones. The first part of the paper deals with runestones with more than one rune-carved surface and demonstrates that there is indeed a strong correlation between the verbal message and the layout. In most cases, the use of a new carving surface can be seen as a means to underline thematic aspects of the inscription. In the second part of the paper, inscriptions with signatures with a dedication are dealt with. Almost all such signatures are placed in a new visual unit. They repeat, complement and accentuate the message of the memorial formulas and offer additional starting points for a reading.

Möten i dialektalt gränsland: Dialektala övergångar genom Närke : dialectal transitions across Närke2001Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The province of Närke comprises, together with Södermanland, a transition area characterised by a mixture of linguistic features from the Götaland dialects (götamål) and Central Swedish dialects (uppsvenska).

One purpose of the study is to test and develop the dialectal transition theory established by J. K. Chambers and P. Trudgill. Another one is to determine the distribution patterns for a number of dialectal transitions in the above-mentioned contact area and to discover linguistic and non-linguistic reasons for them. The third purpose is to describe an aspect of the Närke dialect (närkemålet).

The dissertation takes up six transitions covering four linguistic features: dropping of final t in endings, weakening of unstressed i and a and syncope of suffix vowels.

From the survey it can be seen that all transitions take place gradually, although there are some exceptions. This means that the transitions are to be seen as dialectal continua. Occasionally the change of a transition, at least in part, is more or less abrupt. In one or two cases there are isogloss conditions.

The fact that syncope of suffix vowels and dropped t are mutually exclusive favours retention of final t, as does the hiatus contraction. The vowel balance has some explanatory value for the weakening of unstressed i and a. However, the linguistic explanations should be supplemented with non-linguistic ones.

The distribution patterns are compared with various topographical, demographic and ethnogeographical factors. The study shows that population density is of fundamental importance for dialectal distribution. This is reflected in the fact that, in one respect, central Närke is a fairly closely connected dialect-geographical unit. But since the area is a part of several transitional zones it can from another perspective be seen as the opposite.

Sverigefinnar tycker och talar: Om språkattityder och stilistisk känslighet hos två generationer sverigefinnar : on language attitudes and stylistic perception among two generations of Sweden Finns1998Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The present thesis aims to characterize two subtle aspects of bilingualism among the Sweden Finns, the largest ethnic minority in Sweden. It includes two main parts: 1. the study of language attitudes among Sweden Finns and two control groups-one Swedish and one Finnish-towards different varieties of Swedish and Finnish, using a modified matched-guise test; 2. the characterization of the Sweden Finns' and the control groups' perception of stylistic nuances of lexical items in both Swedish and Finnish (with emphasis on Swedish). In part 2, the subjects were asked to describe the connotative and stylistic meaning of 14 pairs of synonymous words in Swedish (e.g. mamma-morsa 'mother-the old lady') and in Finnish, using Osgood's semantic differential.

The main issue is to what extent the Sweden Finns show similarity to the Swedes and/or the Finns regarding the items 1 and 2 described above. Although these aspects may seem unrelated, there is a connection between them: both language attitudes and stylistic perceptions provide relevant information on the extent to which the Sweden Finns are integrated into the Swedish speech community. Thus, similar attitudes between the Sweden Finnish minority and the Swedish majority reflect a higher degree of integration, which presumably results in a more similar language use.

The results of the analysis indicate that the various Sweden Finnish test groups (divided according to sex and generation) have a different degree of integration in the Swedish speech community. Adult men prove to be the group with the lowest degree of integration (which is in line with previous studies in the field), while adolescents show a high degree of integration in the Swedish speech community, as evidenced by their high degree of similarity with the Swedish majority in both attitudes and stylistic perception. Interestingly, this group also shows clear integration in the Finnish community. These observations suggest that integration into a new society does not necessarily imply the loss of contact with the original speech community. A positive double identity is a possible and natural option for these young Sweden Finns.

Nut - The Goddess of Life in Text and Iconography2003Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study delineates the basic characteristics of the ancient Egyptian goddess Nut as expressed in funerary texts and iconography. The goddess is treated as conceptual in character (Begriffsgottheit), i.e. as an animate expression for the ideas that the ancient Egyptians associated with the sky: space and water. These ideas are termed core attributes and are treated as the basic components employed in the imagery used to describe the goddess.

Chapter 1 presents the forms of appearance that the goddess is given in different contexts. These forms provide information as to the way in which she is perceived. The goddess's maternal role is decisive in their selection.

Chapter 2 focuses on the presentation of the goddess as space and the way in which this aspect of her character is integrated in the world of myth. The occurrence of textual references to the goddess, within the spatial arrangement of the inscribed royal tombs of the Old Kingdom, defines the ontological levels within which the process that turns death into life takes place. Specific sets of texts, connected to the different levels of this process, are categorized after thematic criteria. The reformulation of later versions of these texts is also examined.

Chapter 3 treats the metaphorical expressions used for Nut as space. An analysis reviews a number of objects and concepts, formulating the idea of enclosure ("container") associated with the goddess. These function as "vehicles" in relation to a "target domain", primarily characterized by the concept of mother.

Chapter 4 discusses the personification of the tree, the so called "tree goddess". This iconographic form was created at the beginning of the New Kingdom. With an emphatic mother symbolism, the tree was a manifestation form for a number of goddesses. An analysis of the textual and iconographic elements connected to this motif reveals Nut as the dominate identity of the tree goddess. This connection between the tree and this goddess is, once again, based on the core attributes of space and water, inherent in the life generating role of Nut.

Chapter 5 provides a comprehensive summary of the study.

Magister Mathias Lincopensis, Exposicio super Apocalypsim: Edited with an Introduction by Ann-Marie Billing-Ottosson2003Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation contains the first critical edition of Exposicio super Apocalypsim, written by the Swedish 14th century theologian Magister Mathias Lincopensis. The commentary, which covers the first fifteen chapters of St. John's Apocalypse, became well-known especially thanks to Bernardino of Siena and Nicolaus Cusanus, both of whom made copies of it. It is now preserved in 18 MSS, some of them fragmentary. Mathias interpreted the Bible text allegorice, mystice and moraliter. He citicized his own time, the heresies and the decay of the Church. The Cristians will be afflicted by many tribulations and temptations, but God will succour his Church. At the end of the time the Antichrist will come portending the last Judgement, when only a few will be saved. The manuscripts are divided into two groups, the Bernardinian and the so-called independent. This edition is founded on the last group, especially on MS U.

Unlocking Runes? Reading Anglo-Saxon Runic Abbreviations in Their Immediate Literary Context2015In: Futhark: International Journal of Runic Studies, ISSN 1892-0950, E-ISSN 1892-0950, Vol. 5, p. 91-114Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Runic abbreviations appear sporadically in a number of Old English manuscripts, including three of the four major poetic codices. A convincing rational for the apparently erratic deployment of these unusual abbreviations has yet to be proposed.

In this article I identify the immediate literary context as an important factor influencing the distribution of Anglo-Saxon runic abbreviations, noting in particular that the runic brevigraphs often appear in passages which deal with unlocking. To illuminate this association, I turn to Bede’s story of the prisoner Imma, whose chains become unlocked each time he is bound. His credulous captors believe this miracle to be the work of litteras solutorias, or ‘releasing letters’, the Old English translation of Bede’s work referring explicitly to the alysendlic, or ‘unlocking’, rune. This episode may help to explain why runes appear in a riddle about a lock and key, in the context of Elene’s prayer to open a hoard, and in a passage in which Saturn asks how he may unlock the doors of heaven. If such an association indeed exists, it has implications for our understanding of the perception of the runic script in late Anglo-Saxon England, and it also suggests that the rationale for the use of runes in the Exeter Book riddles may be connected with revealing rather than concealing information.

"Så kommer en person in som länge har stått utanför.": en jämförande studie av fyra svenska partiledares metaforbruk i partiledardebatt2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This is a case study of the People's Dailys and South China Morning Posts portrayal of the human rights lawyer Zhou Shifeng from his arrest until after his trial in Tianjin. This study analyses how media have used news frames when they have reported about Zhou Shifeng. The study also compares how often different news frames have been used by the media, as well as how this portrays Zhou Shifeng to the public.

This study finds a strong difference between the People's Dailys and South China Morning Posts portrayal of Zhou Shifeng. The results showed that in the People's Daily the attribution of the responsibility frame and the moral frame were the most common. The less common frames were the human interest frame and the economic consequence frame. The consequence frame was not identified in the People's Daily. However in South China Morning Post the attribution of responsibility frame, the human interest frame and the consequence frame were the most common. The less common frame was the moral frame. The economic consequence frame was not identified in South China Morning Post. In conclusion the portrayal of Zhou Shifeng in the People's Daily was generally negative. Due to the attribution of frames he was portrayed more as a problem to society than as a person. In South China Morning Post however the portrayal was mainly positive but neutral in certain aspects. In this case he was portrayed more as a member of a group than as a central figure in this trial.
