Does power drive out trust?: Relations between labour market actors in Sweden2010Ingår i: Political Studies, ISSN 0032-3217, E-ISSN 1467-9248, Vol. 58, nr 1, s. 143-166Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Although power and trust are crucial to human cooperation, and considerable attention has been paid to both these concepts in the social sciences, the relationship between them has been poorly investigated. In this article, based on data about a complete network of labour market actors in Sweden, it is investigated whether power ‘drive out trust’ or if power a requirement of trust. In contrast to previous research, it is concludes that there is a positive relationship between power and trust, although it levels out when power is at a very high level. Also in disagreement with previous findings, it is shown, that symmetry in power relations is not a guarantee of trust: two actors with symmetric low power do not trust each other, at least not in this specific institutional setting. Moreover, the theoretical argument is developed and refined by showing that shared beliefs and group membership also have independent impact on trust, as well as a perception that the other actor is pursuing the common good. Hence, the presumed negative impact of power on trust, is not only neutralised, but also transformed into a positive impact in the social context investigated here. However, more research is needed to show whether this finding is true only within certain institutional settings, and, if so, within which ones.

Power, Trust and Deliberation in Swedish Labour-Market Politics2002Ingår i: Economic and Industrial Democracy, ISSN 0143-831X, Vol. 23, nr 4, s. 451-490Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The article focuses on labour market relations and particularly the following aspects:

To what extent do main actors share key opinions? Which actors are considered influential? Who is trusted by whom, and how much? Does communication take the character of deliberation?

Since relational data in industrial relations is rare, 71 actors in Sweden were asked about each other (770 elite positions, slightly more that 300 answered).

Asserted changes as regards power in the Swedish industrial relations system seem over-estimated. The state still hold key positions. The peak-organisations and the Social Democratic Party are also influential, although less than the ministries. All these powerful actors are less trusted over class borders, while the Labour Court and the Conciliators’ Office are considered trustworthy, rational ‘deliberators’. It is hypothesised that they produce “the cement of society” that holds the system together.

Disrupted Exchange and Declining Corporatism: Government Authority and Interest Group Capability in Scandinavia2011Ingår i: Government and Opposition, ISSN 0017-257X, E-ISSN 1477-7053, Vol. 46, nr 3, s. 365-391Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Denmark, Norway and Sweden are still among the most corporatist democracies in the world. Although corporatism has declined in Scandinavia over the last decades, it still exists, albeit at a lower level. Based on comparative and longitudinal data, we argue that this is a consequence of the disruption of some of the prerequisites to corporatist exchange. Neither governments nor the relevant interest groups in Scandinavia control what their exchange partner desires to the same extent as they did during the heyday of corporatism. Despite the involvement of different factors in the three countries, the main pattern is the same. Consequently, the character of state–interest group relations in Scandinavia is not as distinctive as it used to be.

Civil Society Making Political Claims: Outcries, Interest Advocacy, and Deliberative Claims2014Ingår i: PAR. Public Administration Review, ISSN 0033-3352, E-ISSN 1540-6210, Vol. 74, nr 3, s. 413-422Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Increased citizen participation is proposed to remedy democratic deficits. However, it is unclear whether such participation improves reason-based discussions or whether it serves mainly as a safety valve for discontented citizens. To what extent does citizen-initiated participation involve reason-based arguments? This study examines citizens’ reason giving based on unique data on citizens’ contacts with local authorities in Sweden. It provides support for proponents of deliberative participation, as an unexpected amount of contacts provided reasons for clearly stated positions and invitations to a constructive dialogue with authorities. There is variation across issues. More conflictual issues involve fewer intentions to participate in a reasoned exchange of arguments. The study shows that citizens deliver more reason-based input to democratic decision making when they prepare their position in groups than when they participate as individuals. Findings are preliminary but clearly illustrate the fruitfulness of widening the research agenda on civic engagement in politics and public administration.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a normative study of immigrant policy. The main question asked is how liberal democracies should respond in terms of immigrant policy to the fact that they now constitute multicultural societies. Divergent answers to this question are provided by two different schools of thought in the liberal tradition of political philosophy - liberal nationalism and liberal multiculturalism. The arguments presented by some prominent proponents of these two political philosophies are investigated and a favourable stance is taken towards liberal multiculturalism and its policy of immigrant integration as opposed to a liberal nationalist policy of immigrant assimilation. A question of great importance for liberal multiculturalists is whether the social stability and unity provided by national identity can be replaced in the multicultural society by new forms of postnational identities and communities. Some thoughts regarding this issue are presented and it is concluded that the development of such postnational identities and communities is likely since they already exist in some multinational states. The next object of investigation is the current Swedish immigrant policy expressed in a 1997 government bill. It is concluded that the current Swedish immigrant policy accords well with the policy of immigrant integration favoured by liberal multiculturalists.

    Abstract [en]

Rolling Out the Map of Justice2008Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Traditionally, the promotion of socio-economic justice has been seen as an exclusive concern for the state and its citizens. Many contemporary political thinkers criticize this view and argue that the principles of justice which apply within a state also apply to the global level. Further, they often argue that this conclusion is strengthened by the increased level of interconnectedness between people and states created by globalization. It is said that even if principles of justice are constrained by institutional boundaries, these boundaries no longer coincide with state borders but rather extend transnationally, or even globally. In this thesis it is argued that the impacts on justice inferred from globalization are often seriously overstated. The demand for socio-economic justice is created exclusively by a special relationship between citizens. This relationship is constituted by a common membership in the kind of coercive institutional structure epitomized by the state. Under current state of affairs, state coercion has no counterpart in the global arena. The conclusion is that concerns of socio-economic justice should be reserved for the domestic arena. Yet, it is also argued that justice is pluralistic and other kinds of concern are applicable on a global scale. Issues of fairness in international trade are discussed as examples of such concerns, and it is concluded that the international trade regime should institutionalize a number of safeguards that reduce the vulnerability of developing states.

    Underwater Self-determination: Sea-level Rise and Deterritorialized Small Island States2014Ingår i: Ethics, Policy & Environment, ISSN 2155-0085, E-ISSN 2155-0093, Vol. 17, nr 2, s. 225-237Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Global climate change is likely to become a major cause of future migration. Small Island States are particularly vulnerable since territorial destruction caused by sea level rise poses a threat to their entire existence. This raises important issues concerning state sovereignty and selfdetermination. Is it possible for a people to remain self-determining even if it lacks a stable population residing on a specific territory? It has been suggested that migrants from disappearing Small Island States could continue to exercise sovereign control over their abandoned territory. Such an arrangement would allow them to retain a measure of selfdetermination. The question posed in this paper is whether this ‘deterritorialised state proposal’ is conceptually plausible and normatively acceptable. I argue that the proposal is conceptually plausible if we adopt a gradual understanding of ‘self-determination’, but that its normative acceptability is weak even if it is supplemented with compensatory measures.

Multiculturalism versus Civic Integration: - A discourse study of Sweden and Britain2016Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Immigration is a phenomena with increasing importance today, with a larger number of immigrants coming to Europe than in several decades. How nation states in Europe handle this is essential for the development of their respective society as well as for international relations and the shaping of public opinion around the globe. A crucial question is how immigrant's, with the inevitable culture that comes with them, are perceived; are they seen as individuals that could bring possible benefits to the destination state, or rather as something to be overcome once integrated to the society?

Sweden and Britain are two states with a history of having a multicultural approach towards immigrants. Multiculturalism in the meaning of state-minority relations that allow and celebrate differences in cultures and facilitates the distinctive practises and rights of these cultures. It is essentially seen as a liberal alternative towards assimilation. On the other side of multiculturalism civic integration is found, with the view that immigrants should adjust to the culture of their destination state once immigrated. Kymlicka and Banting argue that a liberal form of civic integration is becoming of importance in many nations, compatible and layered on top of existing multicultural policies. Joppke on the other hand, argues that multiculturalism is failing throughout Europe, blamed for segregation and extremism.

This study of political discourse shows that Sweden is a state with relatively similar discourse as their high score on MCP index indicates. Differences due to spokespersons can be detected but the overall result is showing consistently multicultural values. In Britain on the other hand the story is not as solid. Government representatives are not as consistent with one and other, all dimensions of the scale detected. In both states, however more frequently in Britain – statements are inconclusive. The British representatives of the government claim incompatible aspects of multiculturalism and civic integration. This is believed to be due to populist reasons, in so called mainstream politics, something the Prime Minister of Britain has been accused for before, both from opposition and scholars.

Important findings. concerning that assumptions made on the failure of multiculturalism, is detected to be precipitous. It is reasonable to believe that this could be detected in other European countries as well, why further research is necessary.

Nationality, Sexuality & Liberation: A Field Study of the Interconnections of Feminism and Nationalism in Palestine2016Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates the interconnections of feminism and nationalism in the context of Palestine, and is based on a Minor Field Study of interviews with Palestinian women working for women’s rights. The study investigates their views and opinions when it comes to issues related to sexual proprietariness; the view that men own women and their reproductive abilities (Taylor & Jasinski, 2011:249f), and demography in relation to the Palestinian national struggle against the Israeli occupation. The women interviewed in this study argue for the importance of struggling for women’s and Palestinian rights in parallel, partly because the Israeli occupation is said to hinder the work for women’s rights in different ways. The ideology of the Palestinian women’s rights activists interviewed in this study can be said to be an example of nationalist feminism (McClintock, 1997:109) since they are trying to combine feminism and nationalism. By basing their rhetoric on the concept freedom from oppression combining feminism and nationalism is made possible, especially within national liberation movements. The thesis concludes with a discussion about why it might not be nationalism per se that is negatively correlated with women’s rights, but rather conservatism, and it argues that finding a way to theoretically connect individual and collective rights is of great importance in order to manage the struggles.

The Factories of Men?: A study of Hamas’ statements and politics concerning women within a theoretical framework of Islamic feminism2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines Hamas’ policies and opinions on women’s rights and participation in the public sphere from a perspective of Islamic feminism. A theoretical framework of Islamic feminism is developed in this thesis and can be applied to other Islamist organisations and parties. The study shows that Hamas’ policies and statements on the topic of women’s rights and political participation have changed from not qualifying as feminist at all to showing tendencies of an Islamic feminism in line with the Legalist model presented. This is partly due to the democratic elements of Hamas, which points towards that this might be a possible future for other Islamist parties which have gained power democratically, such as from the Arab spring.

The Heart and Soul of the Party: Candidate Selection in Ghana and Africa2004Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The ambition of this book is to shed light on the power dynamics within African political parties through studying how different parties select their candidates for parliamentary elections. Having control over who should represent the party in elections is often considered an important factor in the distribution of power. This is however the first time that this research endeavour has been attempted in an African context. The study’s main focus is on the level of centralisation in the selection process and the vulnerability of incumbent Members of Parliament to challenges from others interested in standing for the party. In addition, attention is given to potential electoral effects of different selection systems and to local expectations on aspirants and MPs.

The analysis takes place on three levels. A comparative study brings together information from 31 parties in 17 African countries. Thereafter, the selection process in Ghana’s main parties during the latest elections is analysed. Finally, Ghanaian constituency level case studies provide detailed information about the processes.

All three studies indicate that the selection process is often significantly more decentralised than general theories about African parties would have us assume. In addition, incumbent MPs regularly lose out to challengers from within the party, often due to local discontent. It is argued that the clientelistic ties that play an important part in many African political parties go far in explaining these findings. Although such ties may generally strengthen the power of the centre, they often create possibilities for local party activists to reject patrons who do not fulfil their expectations.

Fair and Equitable Participation?: A case study of access and benefit sharing processes in India and Samoa2016Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The third main objective of the Convention on Biological Diversity aims to guarantee that the process of using traditional knowledge in research and development of new products is fair and equitable. The framework put in place for implementing this third objective, access and benefit sharing, is supposed to enable and ensure the participation of traditional knowledge holders. Using a qualitative study to examine two cases of access and benefit sharing, the TBGRI-Kani case and the Samoan-Mamala case, this thesis seeks to develop an understanding of how power structures affect these processes. Drawing on theories of participation, deliberation and social dominance the findings show that access and benefit sharing runs the risk of being an empty space controlled by the strongest actor, which in most cases are the receivers of traditional knowledge. Rather than celebrating the mere inclusion of traditional knowledge holders in the access and benefit sharing process, attention should be given to the hierarchies within the process as such.

"Pink and Proud" HBT-aktivismen i Zimbabwe och dess kamp för politisk inkludering2013Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Education, Stratification and Reform: Educational Institutions in Comparative Perspective2017Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The main argument of this thesis is that research has to take the institutional character of education seriously. Educational institutions carry considerable weight for outcomes of education and their design is a matter of intense political debate. This work focuses in particular on the institution of tracking that has wide-reaching consequences for the structure of education. The thesis consists of an introductory essay, together with three empirical essays. The empirical essays all acknowledge the main argument but study different outcomes and relationships connected to education. Essay I studies how the institutions of political economy and education together affect equality of income and equality of educational opportunity. This essay contributes to the literature by distinguishing the effects of the different institutions of political economy and education, as well as how they interact to affect the two contrasting conceptions of equality. The results reveal that tracking hinders equality of educational opportunity but is also related to better incomes for vocational education graduates in certain institutional settings. Wage bargaining coordination reinforces the more equal educational opportunities of weakly tracked contexts and improves the relative income of vocational graduates in these contexts. Essay II explores how education and tracking affect social trust. It makes two contributions. First, the empirical approach provides strong support for causal inference. Second, it is the first study to consider how tracking affects social trust. The empirical evidence finds no general effect of educational attainment on social trust, but decreasing tracking has a positive effect on social trust for individuals who come from weakly educated backgrounds. Essay III aims to explain cross-country differences in tracking by focusing on the impact of government partisanship. The study contributes to the literature by being the first comparative study to explore how partisan politics may explain differences in tracking and being one of few comparative studies there are on the topic at all. The results show that tracking is strongly related to a dominance of Christian democratic governments, whereas detracking reforms have mainly been carried out by social democratic governments.

    Abstract [en]

This paper focuses on the relationship between equality of educational opportunity and equality of income in different institutional contexts. By combining insights from the literature on Varieties of Capitalism and education sociology, the study investigates how the educational system and the political economy jointly affect the social stratification of educational choices and condition income differentials between graduates of vocational and general education programmes. The empirical analysis contributes to the literature by contrasting the two conceptions of equality and applying a richer institutional approach than previous studies within the fields of education sociology and Varieties of Capitalism.

The results reveal that tracking hinders equality of educational opportunity but is also related to higher incomes for vocational education graduates in certain contexts. Wage bargaining coordination reinforces the more equal opportunities of weakly tracked contexts and improves the relative income of vocational graduates in these contexts.

    Abstract [en]

Education is one of the most prominently proposed sources of social trust in the literature. Nevertheless, the evidence of a causal relationship between education and social trust leaves much to be desired. This study contributes to this discussion in two ways. First, it uses a design based on educational reforms in European countries, providing strong grounds for causal inference that travels beyond a specific country. Second, it is the first study to consider how the institutional context of education, specifically tracking, impacts the relationship between education and social trust. Tracking has clear effects on the diversity of schools and classes and is argued to be a decisive factor in the effect of education on social trust. The results do not support a general effect of education on social trust. However, detracking reforms do have a substantial positive impact on social trust among individuals from poorly educated backgrounds.

    Abstract [en]

The present essay explores political explanations for differences in institutional tracking. Tracking refers to the practice in which school children are separated into different tracks according to ability or future plans for further education. Some countries more or less abolished tracking during the decades after the Second World War, whereas others have largely retained that traditional institutional structure of education. What role do partisan politics play for these different trajectories? Tracking is argued to be a truly political issue, as it is closely connected to the reproduction of social stratification and the conditions for social mobility. Hardly any previous comparative studies have aimed to explain the institutional development of tracking, and none have focused on partisan politics. The empirical evidence of this study is based on a novel dataset collected by the author and addressing the development of tracking institutions and reforms from 1960 to 2013 in 31 developed democratic states. In the analyses, government partisanship is used to explain differences in age of selection and in the propensity to decide on detracking reforms. The results show that early selection is strongly related to a dominance of Christian democratic governments, whereas detracking reforms have mainly been carried out by social democratic governments.

    Abstract [sv]

Uppsatsen granskar kritiskt Gøsta Esping-Andersens inflytelserika teori om västerländska välfärdsstatsregimer från boken Three Worlds of Welfare Capitalism.

The Just War Tradition and the War on Terror: A Discourse Analysis of the American response to September 11, 20012017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to assess the applicability of the Just War Tradition to a declaration of war on terrorism. The specific content that the paper will be analysing is the U.S. decision to declare war on terror in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. I will be focusing on three conditions used to justify preemptive attacks, which are essential to the Just War Tradition. (i.e. the scope of the self, the existence of evidence, and military intervention as a last resort). The method used, will be discourse analysis, focusing on how the United States justified their decision to go to war on terror. This study suggests that the U.S. justification was built upon their knowledge and use of the principles of the JWT. The findings shows that the conditions of a justified preemptive attack can be applied to the U.S. justification to declare war on terror. However, when the three conditions are applied, some important questions and implications arise. The main interpretation of the findings is that problems arise when the scope of the self is defined too widely. This, in combination with further implications, indicates that there is a need for a more structured framework in which terrorism can be analysed.

The Road to Women’s Empowerment in a Man's Crop: A field study of Ugandan women's empowerment process in the coffee farming industry2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In recent years the concept of empowerment has flourished to a large extent, not least in development studies. Empowering marginalised communities, poor people and women has become a priority for development agencies and organisations. This thesis aims to assess how women are empowered by a top-down approach through International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA) and a bottom-up approach through the women themselves. The paper is based on a field study that took place in the coffee farms of Uganda where women face enormous challenges as they work in an exploited industry and live with husbands who often withhold the income of the work the women have done. Drawing on Naila Kabeer’s definition of empowerment, this paper looks at if and how the resources, agency and achievements of the women have led to empowerment in the levels of household, workplace and community. The research strategy used for this paper is data collected from semi-structured interviews with women working in coffee farms in Uganda. The results show that women become empowered to a large extent in the workplace and community levels but struggle in the household level. There is not sufficient transformative power from IWCA and the women themselves to change the structures regarding gender-norms that are vastly embedded in the culture. There is a need to raise more awareness and knowledge, not only for women and organisations but for the men as well, in order to reach women’s empowerment and gender equality.
