(Re)constructing a Saint’s Life in an Electronic Edition

The necessity of electronic editions of medieval texts is obvious to everyone who needs apply to primary sources for studies in linguistics, paleography, codicology and textual criticism. The kind of electronic edition I have in mind is not simply a scanned copy of a manuscript, nor of a critical edition, but one that makes use of all the advantages of modern computer technology, such as footnotes and comments, hypertext, the possibility of generating different views and versions, automatic indexing, etc. Among the foremost assets of electronic editions is that they make the sources accessible, and allow one to avoid time-consuming work in numerous libraries and archives, not to mention that electronic resources minimize the devastating manual handling of manuscripts. The possibility of adding supplements and corrections in accordance with new findings is perhaps still more valuable, something that is impossible in a traditional paper edition. An adequate electronic version should contain both a reproduction of the manuscript as well as a typeset version, with support for features such as searching at different levels, processing of forms and lists, etc. An editorial work of this type will meet with technical and structural difficulties.

A palette of cultural traces: A sample study of Predynastic animal depictions on palettes and D-ware pottery2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There are no written sources are available from the Predynastic period, but an array of art decorated artefacts has been found. This essay will take a closer look at one type of these artefact; the animal shaped stone palette to see what art of this artefact can tell us about the culture that made them.

I will do so by looking at the animal depictions found on the palettes, to allow comparison I will include D-wear, a decorated Predynastic pottery type. I have put together two data sets for the respective artefact that forms the base for this study. My theoretical perspective is that the art depictions of artefact as traces of the culture that made them.

The palettes show a variety of patterns that can be seen as such traces in which type of animals are most common, how the animals can be connected by habitat and which animal depiction gets decorated features. My look at the D-ware data set is only brief but shows that animals are quite rare on the pottery and includes only three different kinds of animals. These still correlates with the animal palettes by both artefacts having birds as the most common. The bovids has an almost equal occurrence on the palettes and D-ware in my data sets. Other than this the animal depictions differ notably between the two artefacts.

As the traces of culture does not provide any details, this study has given new questions that can be studied further in greater depth.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine the possibility of calculating the total weight of coins in poorly documented Viking Age silver hoards found on Gotland. A method for calculating the total weight of the silver coins in the hoards, and thus the weight relationship between minted and un-minted silver, would facilitate further and deeper studies using the hoards from Gotland. The method will be based on the average coin weights obtained from numismatic sources. Two calculations, one of Arabic coins and another with mixed coin, is attempted.

Apart from the calculations of the Viking Age coins, earlier studies of the relation between silver coins and silver object will be discussed in the earlier research. The different Viking Age coins in the calculation and the development of the Viking age minting will also be discussed in earlier research.

The result of the study demonstrate that an estimated total weight could be calculated for the Arabic silver coins. Unfortunately the mixed coin hoards could not achieve a calculation that could estimate an equivalent total weight of the silver coins

Det tidigvikingatida runmaterialet: En inventering2019In: Futhark: International Journal of Runic Studies, ISSN 1892-0950, E-ISSN 2003-296X, Vol. 8, p. 7-88Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this article is to make an inventory and then establish a register of the Scandinavian runic inscriptions that belong to the period of the early Viking Age (circa 700–950/970). The beginning of the period is demarcated by a change in the system of writing characters: the older Proto-Nordic rune-row with twenty-four characters is replaced by the younger Viking Age rune-row with sixteen. The spread of the tradition of Christian memorial inscriptions marks the end of the period. The inventory necessitates the formulation of criteria for this delimitation based on these two pivotal moments. A secondary purpose of this article is therefore to elaborate such criteria. The transition from the older to the younger rune-row can be used as a criterion for the entire Scandinavian rune-carving tradition, although it is necessary to develop separate selection criteria with respect to the end of the period for Danish, Swedish and Norwegian territories respectively. The group of inscriptions found outside Scandinavia is also discussed separately. On the basis of the established criteria, a total of 132 inscriptions are classified as belonging to the early Viking Age. This includes both inscriptions on portable objects and on stone. Of the 132 inscriptions, fifty-six are from Danish territory, fifty-three from Swedish, nineteen from Norwegian and four from outside the Nordic region.

Interpunktion i runstensinskrifter från tidig vikingatid2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sm 144 Gursten: En småländsk runsten från tidig vikingatid2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The point of departure for this ethnomusicological study is the increasing interest in vocal genres and expressions in Swedish folk music milieus from the late 1980s. This “vocal vogue” is linked to the process in which folk music moves from a state of revitalization to a state of established “genre” or subculture/micromusic. The aim of this study is to explore how contemporary folk singers, practically and conceptually, relate to source singers, stylistic traits, repertoire etc., in Swedish traditional music. The conceptual background is a discussion of cultural heritage, musical canon, tradition and revitalization as connected and overlapping phenomena. To this is added my model of recreation, reshaping/transformation and renewal/innovation as a way of describing contemporary singers’ approaches to “tradition”, as well as the creativity and re-creativity of a mainly oral/aural music. A great part of the source material consists of interviews with active folk singers and records issued by them. Using my own experience as part of my field studies, I endeavour to combine an insider’s and an outsider’s view.

The empirical part of the thesis is dedicated to the interviewed singers’ approaches to source singers, repertoire, singing style, and performance and arrangement. Selection, performance, and musical expression are regarded in relationship to the increasing institutionalization, formalization etc., of folk music. Some singers take a more intuitive approach to singing, where others have analyzed stylistic traits from archival recordings, using these as pedagogic tools in folk music education. Today, several of the “traditional” techniques are used simultaneously, and style markers are fortified in contemporary singing styles and arrangements. Lilting, cattle calls, and other kinds of vocable music occupy a central position, not least on the borders between folk music and e.g., jazz and improvisational music, an area where there is a focus on the instrumental use of the voice.

"Samhällets minne": En mångfaldsinriktad analys av samlingar och aktörer vid Gotlands Museum2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper compares registered objects with what was outlined in the Gotland Museum's annual reports during four management periods during the 1900s. The primary goal has been to get an idea of whether the priorities concerning the collection and highlighted objects can be linked to the managers', the employees' or the board members' professional skills and areas of interest. Furthermore, the paper intends to decide whether these relationships are so profound that these people could be considered dominant operators. The survey consists of a compilation of registered objects during the selected survey periods, which is shown through statistics. The statistics are then compared with what was conveyed in the museum's annual reports during the same periods. Interpretations of the results based on articles and other archive materials have also been made in order to identify as many potential reasons for what the statistics convey as possible. The results show tendencies that some operators may have influenced the selection of what was collected and highlighted in the annual reports more than others, but more than one possible cause for each event exists. The results also lead to a discussion of how the collections can be managed going forward and proposals for how the management of the collections can be developed and expanded to reflect diversity are presented.

Den bästa statistiken du någonsin sett: En retorisk studie av Hans Roslings användning av visuella hjälpmedel2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Contemplation et dialogue: Quelques exemples de dialogue entre spiritualités après le concile Vatican II : [examples of spiritualities in dialogue emerging after the Second Vatican Council]1998Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In the latter half of the 20th century interreligious dialogue has become a necessary and important feature in human co-existence. This study discusses the dialogue of religious experience. The essentials in this dialogue are mutual understandings of prayer and contemplation as practiced in differing religious and cultural contexts.

The dissertation consists of four parts. The first is a survey of missiological theology on interreligious dialogue, contemplation and inculturation in the Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council.

The second part considers initiatives taken in dialogue in the Benedictine Order from early 1960-ties to mid 1990-ties. Attention is given to "East-West Spiritual Exchange" which has taken place regularly between European participants in "Dialogue Interreligieux Monastique" and Zen Buddhists in Japan.

The third section focuses on Japan. Three Japanese Catholic theologians are discussed. In efforts to establish theological and pastoral communication with Zen tradition, moving towards an integration of details emerging from Zen practice to Catholic spirituality, the Japanese theologians theologize in a fashion similar to the Benedictines.

The final section analyses initiatives in dialogue of religious experience discussed in the thesis. Key concepts draw attention to distinctive characteristics of specific expressions in dialogue, partly in monastic contexts, partly in Japanese contexts. Because the particular form of dialogue presented is an ongoing process which has only recently commenced, no final results in developments can yet be identified. Suffice it to state that initiatives described are new inputs in Catholic missiological study. Both Benedictine and Japanese theologians have in many ways paved the way for official Catholic theology on interreligious dialogue.

ALCHOURRON AND BULYGIN ON DEONTIC LOGIC AND THE LOGIC OF NORM- PROPOSITIONS: AXIOMATIZATION AND REPRESENTABILITY RESULTS2008In: Logique Et Analyse, ISSN 0024-5836, no 203, p. 225-261Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The paper deals with the problem of axiomatizing three formal systems of Deontic Logic / Normative Logic in a sense derived from Alchourron & Bulygin (1973) and Alchourron (1969). First of all we consider a version DL of their Deontic Logic (= Logic of Norms), secondly a version NL of their Normative Logic (= Logic of Norm-Propositions), to which they add a number of definitions generating certain normative operators "proper". Thirdly, we deal with a third system NOBL constructed with a view to isolating the normative fragment of NL which arises as a result of adding those definitions to NL. The main outcome of this paper is then a representability result to the effect that the set of sentences provable in NOBL is exactly the set of the sentences which are provable in NL on the basis of those definitions. The distinction Logic of Norms vs. Logic of Norm-Propositions is explained and discussed rather informally both in the introduction and in the concluding section of the present paper.

Fler krav är lägre krav?: En analys av läroplansskiftets förändringar i musikämnets kursplan2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
