Unlocking Runes? Reading Anglo-Saxon Runic Abbreviations in Their Immediate Literary Context2015In: Futhark: International Journal of Runic Studies, ISSN 1892-0950, E-ISSN 1892-0950, Vol. 5, p. 91-114Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Runic abbreviations appear sporadically in a number of Old English manuscripts, including three of the four major poetic codices. A convincing rational for the apparently erratic deployment of these unusual abbreviations has yet to be proposed.

In this article I identify the immediate literary context as an important factor influencing the distribution of Anglo-Saxon runic abbreviations, noting in particular that the runic brevigraphs often appear in passages which deal with unlocking. To illuminate this association, I turn to Bede’s story of the prisoner Imma, whose chains become unlocked each time he is bound. His credulous captors believe this miracle to be the work of litteras solutorias, or ‘releasing letters’, the Old English translation of Bede’s work referring explicitly to the alysendlic, or ‘unlocking’, rune. This episode may help to explain why runes appear in a riddle about a lock and key, in the context of Elene’s prayer to open a hoard, and in a passage in which Saturn asks how he may unlock the doors of heaven. If such an association indeed exists, it has implications for our understanding of the perception of the runic script in late Anglo-Saxon England, and it also suggests that the rationale for the use of runes in the Exeter Book riddles may be connected with revealing rather than concealing information.

"Så kommer en person in som länge har stått utanför.": en jämförande studie av fyra svenska partiledares metaforbruk i partiledardebatt2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This is a case study of the People's Dailys and South China Morning Posts portrayal of the human rights lawyer Zhou Shifeng from his arrest until after his trial in Tianjin. This study analyses how media have used news frames when they have reported about Zhou Shifeng. The study also compares how often different news frames have been used by the media, as well as how this portrays Zhou Shifeng to the public.

This study finds a strong difference between the People's Dailys and South China Morning Posts portrayal of Zhou Shifeng. The results showed that in the People's Daily the attribution of the responsibility frame and the moral frame were the most common. The less common frames were the human interest frame and the economic consequence frame. The consequence frame was not identified in the People's Daily. However in South China Morning Post the attribution of responsibility frame, the human interest frame and the consequence frame were the most common. The less common frame was the moral frame. The economic consequence frame was not identified in South China Morning Post. In conclusion the portrayal of Zhou Shifeng in the People's Daily was generally negative. Due to the attribution of frames he was portrayed more as a problem to society than as a person. In South China Morning Post however the portrayal was mainly positive but neutral in certain aspects. In this case he was portrayed more as a member of a group than as a central figure in this trial.

”Letar du efter din ’precious’!”: Perspektiv på omnämningar och tilltal i en polisskribents Facebookinlägg2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The materiality of discourses and the semiotics of materials: A social perspective on the meaning potentials of written texts and furniture2011In: Semiotica, ISSN 0037-1998, E-ISSN 1613-3692, no 187, p. 141-165Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Based on two studies of different meaning-making phenomena, post-it notes and furniture, this paper highlights the role of materiality in everyday semiosis. A perspective on the semiotics of material artifacts is adopted, in which the “social” in combination with the specific affordances of materials are crucial for meaning-making. Partially in opposition to a Saussurean view of the semiotic sign, it is argued that materiality in itself contributes to meaning-making, through discourses and activity types. This paper contributes to the theoretical and the methodological dialogue between social semiotics and other approaches in the wider field of semiotic research.

    Abstract [en]

The article discusses the academic and cultural relationships between Sweden and the U.S in the early 20th century. It focuses on the activities of two key institutions, the Sweden-America Foundation in Stockholm and the American-Scandinavian Foundation in New York. Both foundations were established in the second decade of the 20th century and sought to promote educational and cultural exchanges and contacts between Sweden and the United States. Although the foundations had similar goals, the reasons behind their establishment were quite different. The American foundation had one root in the development of Scandinavian-American ethnic communities. Another source of origin can be traced to a growing interest in medieval England, Old English, and Anglo-Saxon in American universities, in which Scandinavia came to occupy a privileged position. The Swedish foundation was established partly as a result of a Swedish cultural and academic reorientation following World War I, away from Germany towards the U.K. and the U.S. The effects of the work of both foundations have been significant, both in establishing close academic contacts between Sweden and the U.S. and in creating improving and promoting closer cultural and political ties between the two countries.

Borrowability of pronouns: evidence from Uralic2012In: Finnisch-Ugrische Mitteilungen, ISSN 0341-7816, Vol. 35, p. 1-34Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In borrowability hierarchies pronouns usually occupy a relatively low position, i.e. they are assumed not to borrowed very often. This is undoubtedly true, and therefore cases where it does occur may be of some interest with regard to the question what can be borrowed, and under what circumstances. Cases of borrowed non-personal pronouns are comparatively common, but personal pronouns are borrowed relatively rarely. Such instances can usually be divided into a number of categories, and they tend to occur mostly in languages where pronouns are open classes, in neighbouring languages with different clusivity strategies, in languages with avoidance styles, and in closely related languages. In a number of Uralic languages cases of borrowed pronouns are also found, though most of these do not come under any of the abovementioned categories. Borrowed personal pronouns occur in Enets, Komi-Zyryan and Komi-Permyak and in Vote. In these languages, however, the reasons for borrowing such pronouns are different: in Enets and Vote it was probably paradigmatic systematicity, whilst in the Komi cases it is most likely due to identity of various pronominal case forms.

Negation in South Saami2015In: Negation in Uralic Languages / [ed] Miestamo, Matti & Tamm, Anne & Wagner-Nagy, Beáta, Amsterdam: John Benjamins Publishing Company, 2015, 1, p. 377-398Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Standard negation in South Saami utilizes a negative auxiliary, which has two tenses (present and preterite), and connegative forms of the lexical verb. The negative auxiliary has a full personal paradigm in the imperative (except for the third person dual), whilst normal verbs only have a second person singular in the imperative. In predicative, locative, existential and possession clauses a combination of the negative auxiliary and the verb ‘to be’ is used. The present third person singular of the negative auxiliary serves as a negative reply. There are no specifically negative indefinites, and interrogative pronouns are also used as indefinites. Negative adjectives are mainly formed with suffixes, though borrowed prefixes also occur.
