'Ob ich ein ritter wære'. Genderentwürfe und genderrelatierte Erzählstrategien im Nibelungenlied2001Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation examines the significance of gender in the Nibelungenlied, paying particular attention to the concept of femininity, and with regard to characterisation, plot and narrative strategy. It reveals a concern with social roles, above all in the transgressions of the norm, in the deviations from ideal prototypes. It is a concern which involves both class roles as well as the socio-culturally-shaped sex roles. With a broad-based research model as starting-point, there is a discussion on the inter- and intra-gender level of the interplay between the protagonists, in speech and action and by means of non-verbal gesture and objects that have associative functions. The methodological approach of the study is text-oriented, and comprises a comprehensive discussion of the relevant literature. It focuses not only on the plot and the network of relationships, but also on narrative structure and the types of intrusions by the authorial narrator. It poses the question of how the aspect of gender influences reception. In particular, it stresses the significance of the use of contrast and parallel, of vocabulary and of the narrative points of view, and shows how fundamental the question of gender is both for the plot and in the assessment of the characters. The study reveals an intention of the text, one which is marked by a critical stance towards the happenings in the epic and a clear attempt to reinterpret the mythological in human terms.

"Das Eigentliche bleibt doch zurück.": Zum Problem der semantischen Unbestimmtheit am Beispiel von Theodor Fontanes Effi Briest.2002Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyse the notion of indeterminacy in Theodor Fontane´s social novel Effi Briest. The study is interdisciplinary in that the notion of indeterminacy involves both literary scholarship and linguistics. In the survey of the research field, it is shown that linguistics uses the notions of polysemy, ambiguity, and vagueness, while literary scholars use the notion of lacuna or indeterminacy. This interdisciplinary approach is relevant to one of the main purposes of the thesis, namely to create a typology of indeterminacy in a literary text, taking Fontane´s novel Effi Briest as the point of departure. According to this typology, indeterminacy can be divided into six categories: lexico-semantic polysemy, syntactico-semantic ellipsis, grammatical function words with unclear reference, kinegrams, silence, and interruption of the narrative and the dialogical structure of the text. With this typology it is possible to make linguistic as well as literary distinctions and to point out new ways of reading the novel. The notion of indeterminacy and its subdivisions is used in this thesis to analyse six excerpts that are crucial to the understanding of the setting and the characters of the novel. This method makes it possible to reconstruct the texts and to find alternative interpretations that have not been considered in earlier Fontane criticism. The textual analyses constitute a broad critique of previous readings of Effi Briest. This criticism also draws parallels to the analyses of the specific excerpts in focus.

Intertäxtualität und Phraseologie in den drei Versionen der Panne von Friedrich Dürrenmatt: Aspekte von Groteske und Ironie1999Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this dissertation is to analyse from an intertextual perspective Friedrich Dürrenmatt's text Die Panne, which exists in three versions: as radio play, story and comedy for the theatre. By means of comparison, the study sets out to determine the extent to which the differences between the three versions are limited to the characteristics of genre, or whether new meaning has also arisen in the adaptations. A further consideration is the impact of the change of genre on the content. The intertextual comparison of the three versions is based on the structuralist conception in intertextual research and involves a particular form of intertextuality, auto-intertextuality, which concerns the relationship between texts by the same author.

The common textual features of the three versions have been brought together in a textual construct that is not specific to any genre, the textual invariant, which has formed the basis for the analysis of the characteristics of genre, as well as of the differences in content of the three variants. The intertextual perspective reveals that the three versions of Die Panne are not mere reproductions, with the aim of the author being simply a change of genre, but innovations, since each variant leads to new interpretations of meaning.

Within the framework of intertextual comparison, the forms of the grotesque and of irony as dominant stylistic devices have been investigated. A gradation in the intensity of the grotesque in the three variants becomes apparent, with a culmination in the comedy. Irony serves Dürrenmatt as a reinforcement of the grotesque.

The heightening of the irony and the grotesque is supported by an abundance of phraseological units. The analysis of the semantics of these phraseological units in their co- and contextual settings reveals that their main functions in the three variants are those of foreshadowing, manipulation of the main character`s behaviour, and creation of the characters through their own speech. Moreover, the phraseological analysis confirms the conclusion that the radio play has been the starting point for the story, which in turn prepares the way for the theatre production, the highpoint in the representation of the grotesque. Thus linguistic (phraseology)and literary (intertextuality) methods complement each other in illuminating the problematics involved in the change of genre.

Studien zum mittelniederdeutschen Adverb2002Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The present work is a corpus-based study of Middle Low German adverbs. The corpus covers the period from c. 1225 to c. 1600 and comprises several text categories (e.g. legal documents and literary texts) from the three main Middle Low German regions, Westphalia, Eastphalia and northern Lower Saxony. The extralinguistic parameters investigated are time, region, and text category. In addition, some semantic factors are taken into account, such as the type of adjective to which the derivational suffixes are added. The distinction between adjectives and adverbs and the concept of the suffix are discussed in some detail.

The presentation of results is divided into three main parts. The first part investigates variation in the distribution of adverbial derivational suffixes such as -inge(s), -like(n) and

-linge(n). The second part analyses variation in the distribution of a number of temporal adverbs, e.g. heute, immer/stets, jetzt/nun, nie, niemals and oft. In the third part, some syntactic aspects of Middle Low German adverbs are considered. In this context, the development of adverbs derived from adjectives in North Sea Germanic languages and in High German is compared.

The present study shows that the distribution of both adverbial derivational suffixes and temporal adverbs exhibits variation across time and region. In contrast, the parameter of text category is shown to be of lesser importance.

Übersetzen mit doppeltem Skopos: Eine empirische Prozess- und Produktstudie2003Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this experimental study is to examine the translation processes and the resulting translations of eight translators performing translation tasks from German into Swedish. The data about the translation processes were collected with the think-aloud technique, i.e. the translators were asked to verbalize as much of their thinking as possible while translating. The translators – four of whom had long working experience and the others substantially shorter experience – were asked to translate the same source text (a news item) for two different fictitious audiences: first for a morning newspaper and then for a children’s magazine.

With regards to the translation process, the results showed that the two categories of translators did not differ considerably from each other, neither in their dictionary use, nor in their overall accomplishment of the translation tasks. However, they did differ in their attitude. The less experienced translators were more involved in the process, which also led to quality improvements. At the same time, individual differences were substantial regarding all of the criteria examined.

The resulting translations (the products) were evaluated both by the researcher and by journalists from the newspapers or magazines in which the texts, according to the briefs, were to be published. The results showed small differences in text quality for the two categories of translators. According to the journalists, the less experienced translators even produced slightly better texts for the morning paper.
