I don’t know what you’re looking for: Professional vision in Swedish agricultural extension on nature conservation management2008In: The Journal of Agricultural Education and Extension, ISSN 1389-224X, E-ISSN 1750-8622, Vol. 14, no 4, p. 329-345Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article addresses how farmers learn to appropriate the gaze of the 'new farmer', by describing how farmers and advisers in the field discursively construct farmland under scrutiny for inclusion in government support schemes. Based on the findings, recommendations for successful agricultural extension are presented. The methodological perspective is an interaction analysis based on video recordings of advisory encounters. The analysis is focused on the professional vision of the participants. The results show how the participants manifest different professional visions when they walk through the same piece of land. Despite an interest in contributing to the encounter, insufficient access to relevant resources is an obstacle for the farmer. Due to asymmetries between the participants, the professional vision of the adviser becomes the dominating and acknowledged one, but the prerequisites are insufficient to afford learning by the farmer. To overcome this dilemma, we encourage reflection on the role of the adviser by challenging the frames for participation in extension encounters.

Varför präst?: En studie om yrkesvalsprocess bland prästkandidater2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Under utbildningstiden tycks motvärnet suddas ut och kandidaterna socialiseras in i prästrollen.

    Abstract [en]

In this article the strategies of the recreation instructor profession in relation to school cooperation are examined. On reading a column in Fritidspedagogen 1980-95 it would seem that two strategies dominate the debate. During 1980-88 the prevalent strategy was one of exclusiveness. It was argued that Ieisure-time centers had a pedacogicaI vaIue in their own right and should be built as independent enties with staff comprising solely of recreation instructors. Through information about pedagogica! ideals to decision makers, an expansion of leisure-time centers should be secured. During 1989-95 an economic crisis and change in municipal and school law forced a change of strategy. Now it is thought that leisure-time centers should be integrated inschool. The reason for this is based on pragmatic arguments, such as school development and economic effectiveness. Three different groups of the recreation instructor profession can be discerned: The Utopians (dominating the former strategy and the Realists dominating the latter, with the Avant-gards foregoing the development. It is argued that the conditions of today have changed. from the enthusiastic cooperation between Avant-gards and teachers in the beginning of the 1990s to the Realists' acceptance of an unrevokable development. Finally the question whether the teacher education is dominated by Avant-gardes leading the future development, or Realists following after, is raised.

    Abstract [en]

The restructuring of the Swedish comprehensive school has brought child care and schoolcloser together. During the 90's leisure time centres (LTCs) were physically integrated into school buildings. Therefore, today teachers and recreation instructors (RIs) often worktogether in teams. The work team is officially looked upon as an agent for educationalchange in schools. The official rhetoric on integration exerts a normative pressure onpedagogues to collaborate during the school day, and the educational aim is to merge "thebest of" from each educational culture. However, the teacher position in the educationalinstitution dominates the RI position. An unequal occupational relation has thus beenestablished, which makes collaboration in interprofessional work teams harder.

The aim of the study was to analyse how RIs' occupational function was constitutedthrough oral interaction during planning sessions in interprofessional work teams. One workteam in two schools in the same municipality was chosen, and followed during one term. Thestudy had a social constructionist/constructivist perspective. Data was constructed as episodes, and the notion of strategic context derived from Anthony Giddens theory of structuration was used in data analysis.

Results showed that in spite of great differences between the two schools in terms oforganisation and local ethos, the strategic context forced both work teams to constitute theRIs ocupational function during collaboration time as teachers' assistants. RIs acting inaccordance with a school educational logic were receiving positive sanctions. RIs had difficulties grounding their actions in a LTC educational logic. The structural constraints ofthe strategic context reproduced the unequal relation position-wise as an unequal occupational relation in interaction. It was concluded that in the future RIs wishing to keep or develop an occupational identity as the pedagogue of recreation, could best do so outside of school and outside of interprofessional collaboration with teachers.

    Abstract [en]

During the last decades, the Swedish education system has been in a process of restructuring, in terms of privatisation, marketisation, and deregulation. As a result, in 2001 a new teacher education reform was implemented. As a part of the three year long research project Teacher Educations: Recruitment and Professional Identies during Restructuring (LÄROM), 19 teacher educators were interviued on their experiences of teacher training/education from a professional perspective. The theoretical framework was derived frpm Bourdieu's praxeological theory. Results showed that from teacher educators' horizon, teacher education is percieved as "fragmentised", that academic knowledge "rules" over praxis based teacher knowledge, and a grater "distance" between educators and students has been created in the process. Seemingly there has been a shift from a predominatly oral teacher education culture, where legitimate teacher knowledge was presented in narrative form, to a textualised culture, where legitimate teacher knowledge is presented as texts inside a scientific and academic framework. A central conclusion was that developing a strong professional identity, was hard for student teachers aiming towards teacing in preschool or primary school settings, whereas professional identity development was easier for student teachers aiming at teacing as subject teachers in secondary or upper secondary school.

Medicinens lyskraft och skuggor: ― om trosföreställningar och symbolisk makt i habiliteringen 1960―19802007Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The dissertation examines the formation of specific groups, their interests and positions related to children with disabilities and their education and care in Sweden developed during 1960―1980. The theoretical framework is based on Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological theory of social space, which assumes that social life is based on symbolic and cultural systems of beliefs with respectively specific doxas and symbolic economies. Consequently, the analysis has focused on the agents’ position-takings and their struggle for recognition and preferential rights of interpretations.

The reconstruction of a “habilitation sphere” was conducted through agents, their positions of interests and position-takings as analytical tools. The positions were mainly reconstructed on articles in journals of 10 professional organizations covering 6 occupations and 4 disability organizations. The occupational groups were paediatric doctors/child psychiatrists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, psychologists and pre-school teachers. The other positions were related to the county council union, four disability organizations (DHR, FUB, RBU and HCK), two of which were parent organizations and in addition, the research field of social medicine. Other materials were e.g. reports of commissions of inquiry. In order to explore the social foundations of the occupational positions, materials from archives have been used.

The conclusion shows the significance of: a) historical structures related to the exceptional position of medicine in society, the development of the Swedish health care system in general and the organizations of “special” children b) commissions of inquiry as consecration authorities and processes of social mobilization, both important contributions in shaping symbolic economies, c) myths and ideologies in the exercising of symbolic power, d) alliances between the state and medicine, and between occupational groups and clients. The analysis also shows the strengths of the doxas which could work as a shield for the agents but also as obstacles for external agents when entering the habilitation sphere.

Perspektiv på barnuppfostran: En studie av föräldraskap i kristen miljö : [a study of parenting in a Christian context]1997Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The dissertation deals with the raising of children within the framework of the family andfrom the perspective of the parents. The study treats the parents' intentions and understanding of themselves as parents and their thoughts regarding parenting. An investigation wascarried out among parents from Christian contexts characterized as nonconformist and low-church. The purpose was to describe these parents' perspectives, strategies, and practical common sense in childrearing and to understand these aspects in the light of the socio-cultural context and the religious commitment.

A questionnaire survey was carried out in a larger group (n=114) and semi-structured,open interviews with eighteen parental couples, selected from the larger group under study.

The parents put particularly strong emphasis on the family and family child care in order to create emotional security for the children and to convey Christian faith and traditional ethical values such as reliability and honesty. As a strategy they also stressed church-related activities. In achieving these goals the parents did not want the children to feel estranged from the surrounding secular society. Therefore most of the parents put less emphasis on transmitting an old sub-cultural nonconformist life style.

The preferred parenting-strategy seemed to be a guiding and interactive authoritative style with a concomitant idea of Christian parenting as characterized by an understanding-accepting behavior toward the children, with a strong emphasis on the concept of forgiveness-a phenomenon that grew with increased religious commitment. The parents rejected oldfashioned authoritarian child-rearing and wanted to develop a relationship based on confidence and openness. Variations were found in parental patterns related to the family environments, education and religious commitment.

Staging Multilingual identities and negotiating monolingual norms in multiethnic school settings2008In: International Journal of Multilingualism, ISSN 1479-0718, E-ISSN 1747-7530, Vol. 5, no 3, p. 177-196Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper focuses on children’s language alternation practices in two primary school settings. More specifically we explore how participants (children and teachers) in episodes of language alternation invoke linguistic and social identities, thereby “talking into being” language and educational ideologies. The present study is based on multi-sited ethnography in two multiethnic educational settings where classroom activities are primarily in Swedish. Theoretically, it draws on sequential identity-related approaches to language alternation practices (Gafaranga, 2001). As demonstrated, children both draw on a range of linguistic varieties, and refrained from involving in poly-lingual practices. In so doing, they were actively engaged in producing and resisting a range of locally valued identities (i.e. monolingual, bilingual, poly-lingual student). Simultaneously a monolingual norm was brought into being, and, importantly, the children appropriated and exploited the monolingual norms-in being for organizing their social relations. Overall the study highlights the links between social and linguistic identities, language choice, and language and educational ideologies. We argue that an understanding of children’s poly-lingual practices in multilingual settings is provided by a close analysis of the local processes of identity work located within the wider socio-cultural context (e.g., language and educational ideologies).Key words: language alternation, linguistic and social identity, monolingual norm, multilingual classes, poly-lingual practices, multi-sited ethnography, Membership Categorization Analysis (MCA)

Legacy Data Migration: A pilot study on the methodological feasibility of conversion and enhancement of electronic resources.2004In: Joint International Conference of the Association for Literary and Linguistic Computing and the Association for Computers and the Humanities: Göteborg University, June 11 - 16, 2004., 2004Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we will describe a pilot study based on two different subsets of electronic resources to be used in the Virtual Corpus system developed at the Oxford Text Archive (OTA).

The Virtual Corpus system is designed to make the OTA more useful for researchers by enabling the selection of texts for a corpus on basis of metadata categories in the TEI header resource description. Currently these categories include such fields as language, date, genre, author etc. (Berglund & Wynne, 2003). In order to make the Virtual Corpus system (VC) even more useful the texts would benefit from data enhancement.

This pilot study's aim is to evaluate the necessary procedures for enhancing the metadata available in the TEI header with further categories and also to explore the possibilities for migration of legacy data in a wide range of formats into a TEI-conformant XML format.
