Att använda en plan: Fenomenet biblioteksplaner och begreppet användning problematiserat2014In: Nordisk kulturpolitisk tidskrift, ISSN 1403-3216, E-ISSN 2000-8325, no 1, p. 93-113Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Planning and evaluation has become increasingly important within the Swedish public library sphere. The aim of this article is to problematize the libraries’ (the Royal Library, the regional libraries and the public libraries) task to evaluate the design and use of ‘library plans’. The task will be described in relation to the development of the Swedish library legislation and the evolution of library plans as an administrative phenomenon. The analytical focus in the article is the concept of use as applied in government practice and library practice. The empirical material consists of documents reflecting the enforcement of use of plans and evaluation of use of plans, and of qualitative interviews with library staff reflecting plans in library practice. The analysis shows how government practice in combination with library practice creates an administrative habit regarding the use, and evaluation of use of plans. Nonetheless the government practice has the first word in deciding which concepts should dominate the library administration. In the concluding discussion we argue the current library administration – and the concepts such as plans, use of plans and plan evaluation, dominating that administration – might be altered if there would be alternatives to the current administrative trends with strong influences from market economy logics.

    Abstract [en]

The object of this two years master's thesis has been to study a specific genre of personal archives by examiningthe archives of nine parents who have lost one or several infants. Using internet-based methods, (e-mail, Skypeand digital photographs), I have conducted qualitative research using a general interview guide technique. Usingresearch from archival theory as well as other fields, my material has been arranged and analysed according tothemes and recurring thoughts picked up from my informants during the interviews. My main theoretical aid has been that the role of parent who has lost a child is the starting point for the creationof the personal archives. Another important theory is my definition of the term “document” as not dependent onmedium and format, but on usage: if an object has been used as a part of an archive, it is a document. I also claimthat study of personal archives is a way to help the archival profession and Swedish archival theory to becomemore democratic and inclusive, since especially the former is mandated to reflect all of society's many manifestationsof culture and memory. The results show that the archives contain a large selection of documents in differentformats and mediums, but that they also have many similarities. This is an effect of the fact that the parentshave all had roughly the same document-creating contacts with their relatives and friends, the authorities and theother parts of society often involved in the events proceeding the child's birth and death (or sickness and death). The reasons to create and maintain a personal archive are to preserve the memories of events, people, places, thoughts and feelings associated with the child and whatever time the parents got to spend with him or her. By remembering, the parents are also confirming the child's existence and place within the family, and helping themselvesconfirm their newly acquired role as parents who have lost a child. The archives and their constituent partsare used as physical and psychological “linking objects”, to help the parents feel (at least temporary) closer totheir child by watching, touching or talking about the most important documents. These are often the ones displayedon special memory shelves, on family photo walls or in memory boxes. It follows that arrangement of thedocuments is based mostly on the emotional attachment of the parent to the individual document, and that destructionof records are extremely rare in the studied archives. Their growth diminished with time, but does notstop completely since the parents, other relatives and friends still create new documents, mostly to observe holidaysand anniversaries. Furthermore, the way the parents use their archives and its constituent parts change astime passes. Individual documents may also change their emotional and cultural significance to the parent, orgain additional ones. Some of the underlying factors behind these findings are my informants views on creating, keeping and destroying documents. They all express a need to “save everything”, and most also want to “documenteverything”. The latter, their wish to create new documents to complement the ones created primarily byothers and as a result of specific events and processes, comes from a feeling of not having enough documents inthe archives. It can also be the result of dissatisfaction with those that do exist. Finally, as is commonplace amongpersonal archives, the archives in my study have multiple record creators within the immediate family and outsideit, even though my informants are usually the main creators. Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to investigate how the meaning of the concept of authenticity has been used in arguments about the reconstruction of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden. The museum, which opened for the first time in 1866, was closed for restoration, renovation and other engagements during 2013-2018. After the reopening, a debate took place in the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet. In the debate there were people who argued that the reconstruction had erased the museum’s history and replaced it with modern design. Other people argued that the reconstruction had made the building more true to its history as older reconstructions had distorted the original building.

The main source material for the present study consists of a final report of the project made by the National Property Board, selected debate articles from the debate on the reconstruction in Svenska Dagbladet, and an interview and two mail conversations that have been made with persons involved in the project. Through argumentation analysis, arguments from the final report, the debate in Svenska Dagbladet, the interview and the mail conversations have been analyzed. The arguments selected from the source material are arguments that either indicate that the authenticity has been preserved or that the authenticity has not been preserved. The thesis does not intend to determine whether the reconstruction of Nationalmuseum has preserved the authenticity or not, it is the argumentation about this issue that is to be investigated. The reason is that the perception differs between different people, different contexts and different views.

The analysis shows that the arguments claiming that the authenticity has not been preserved above all relate to the building's younger reconstructions with its additions that were removed during the current reconstruction. Some debaters argue that the building's younger history also has a value that should be protected. In the end it comes down to what kind of authenticity one intends to preserve. In the project, the experience values have been prioritized before the material values, which indicates that the authenticity from a material perspective may have decreased while the functional authenticity of the building has increased.

The arguments that favour that the authenticity has been preserved are primarily based on the view that great emphasis has been placed on the preservation of the building's cultural-historical value. During the project one has also been inspired by the building's original drawings made by the building's architect Friedrich August Stüler, which indicates that the authenticity of the original building has been strengthened.

The thesis ends with a final discussion where the result of the analysis is presented in relation to the theoretical framework of the thesis. This is done in order to answer the research questions. The main research question for the thesis has been; "How has the meaning of authenticity been presented in the final report, in the debate and by people who have worked with the reconstruction of Nationalmuseum?”.

Memories of Life and Death: Three Practices of Remembering in Post-Dictatorial Argentina2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss some of the memory-practices in post-dictatorial Argentina regarding the collective memory of the Dirty War and the people who were objects of forced disappearances. The practices studied are Madres de Plaza de Mayo, sites of memory established in former centres of detention and Parque de la Memoria. The thesis draws upon the theoretical framework of collective memory and collective trauma, memorial museums and material culture.

The study was formed as a case study. The materials are observations, interviews and photographs, and were gathered through field work in Argentina in 2017.

The Madres de Plaza de Mayo were analysed using theories on lieux de mémoire brought forward by Pierre Nora and commemoration ceremonies brought forward by Paul Connerton. The sites of memory were studied out of the perspective on memorial museums by Paul Williams. Parque de la Memoria was studied with theories on war memorials by Jay Winter.

The Madres de Plaza de Mayo can be interpreted as lieu de mémoire due to their material, symbolic and functional dimensions. Through them, the disappeared are alive. The sites of memory present an ambivalent narrative. The narrative of the disappeared is that of a state of limbo. Parque de la Memoria is a park of mourning, placing the disappeared in a narrative of death.

The situation of memory-practices in post-dictatorial Argentina is complex and the practices articulates three different narratives of the disappeared, ranging from life to death.

Hur spel blir kulturarv: En fallstudie om kulturarvsproduktion utifrån praktiker i Play Beyond Play på Tekniska museet2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This research explores games as cultural heritage. The purpose of this study is to contribute with knowledge about how games as cultural heritage is made. The study seeks answers to which principal museum practices that are being carried out in the work with games as cultural heritage and what constitutes them. Furthermore this study explains how these practices influences the making of games as cultural heritage. The analysis has been carried out on Play Beyond Play, a game exhibition made at Tekniska museet in Stockholm 2018, where practices is being understood and analyzed from a practice theory perspective with the use of games as boundary objects. The empiric data was collected through semi-structured qualitative interviews with people working with the content of the exhibition and an place-based observation of the exhibition itself. The concept of ”anchoring practices” has been used as an analythic method to find and sort which principal practices that were carried out. The analysis resulted in six principal practices in the work of knowledge and mediation of games as techinchal development, the role of playablity, the matter of thinking ctitically, the effect of practical limitations and possibilities, the implementation and use of research, and the certification of games as cultural heritage. These practices influence the making of games as cultural heritage by defining games, how knowledge about games should be carried out and why games is important as cultural heritage through the location, role and area of focus at Tekniska museet. The study contributes with explanations and reinforces the connection between practices and the use of objects to create and mediate knowledge about games, where the knowledge carried out is affected by the context where it is being created through a longer period of time. Abstract [en]

The purpose of this master’s thesis was to investigate how museum stores are governed, with a focus on museum stores situated in museums in Stockholm and on museums stores which are part of a government agency. The purpose was also to investigate the relationship between the museum and the consumption in the museum store in general.

The thesis shows that museum stores which are part of a government agency are governed by their appropriation directions, including the direction that the museum stores must be fully financed. However, the museum stores are also influenced by guidelines that have not been written down, expectations from the museum and from museum patrons. Other factors not within the control of the museum were also of importance, and could limit the choices available for the museum store managers as well as be a source of inspiration. The result also shows that the museum store and the consumption it’s associated with, is seen as either a threat, a necessity or a possibility: The museum store is often viewed as being at odds with the main role of museums in general, while also being considered a necessity, helping the museum to meet the patron’s expectations. In some cases the museum could benefit from the museum store, due to the stores’ possibility of improving upon the museum visit, or making a profit usable in other museum activities.

The source material was gathered from the websites of international and national organisations within the museum field. Material was also gathered during interviews with museum store managers in Stockholm. The theory used was cultural economics and consumption studies. The method for this essay was interviews, minor field studies, linguistic analysis. The focus of this essay was how the museum store is governed. The essay does not, for example, research how the museum visitors or museum patrons experienced the shop.

Family time: En studie om interaktion inom familjer vid museibesök2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A large portion of the total visits to museums in Sweden consists of children. This is in part due to school visits, where entire groups of children visit museums at the same time. However, if these school visits are excluded from the total amount of visits, children still made up 24% of the total amount of visitors in 2019. These children do not come to the museum on their own, but rather in the company of parents, siblings or other adults. This category of visitors is often called "family visits" and many of the central museums in Sweden has a specific part of their website dedicated to this group. At the same time, it is often rather unclear precisely what a family visit is, which often results in it instead being only about the children. Even if this by no means is bad, it could mean that the children are the sole focus of the museum, when other members of the family is just as important for the learning experience and enjoyment of the child in question. This study aims to discuss the methods being used by professionals working in museums, regarding stimulating interaction in families during their visit at the museum.

Cyborgbibliotekarien: Donna Haraways cyborgteori ur ett biblioteks- och informationsvetenskapligt perspektiv2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper is exploring Donna Haraways cyborg theory, in a perspective of Library- and Information Science. The investigation aims to better understand the occupation of librarians, and their position within knowledge creation through a digital and cyber technologically evolving society. The cyborg figuration, is making it possible to look at the librarian’s occupation in a postmodern-, posthuman-, and cyberfeminist perspective. The cyborg figure is a posthuman figure, a fusion between human and technology. Because of its interdisciplinary composition, the cyborg is cross-bordering and diversified in its nature. In a combination with Library- and Information Science the cyborg theory can produce new perspectives on our knowledge production.

The empirical investigation is made within the context of academic library research support, and Open Science. Throughout this development it becomes clear that the librarian is working in a coexistence between human and technology. This paper then demonstrates, that there is an analogy between the librarian and the cyborg figure, and especially in the context of the academic library. In this analogy, the cyborg librarian is constituted as a central phenomenon in a line of several developmental events – concerning the accessibility and dissemination of scientific knowledge creation, through the digital environment.

The cyborg librarian is then able to use the cyborg theory in this context, to cross over borders and create new perspectives. It can also create pedagogic tools for information instructions, that contribute to a deeper and more complex insight in knowledge production, as reality production. By evolving a critical, multimodal and reflective information literacy, and thereby also supporting the library institution in adopting to a postmodern society. Haraways cyborg feminism is also applying a perspective of social justice into the context of literacy instructions, whilst working in the same spirit as the democratic mission of the library institution.

    Abstract [en]

This master's thesis is a study of how librarians are depicted in crime fiction. 12 American and English mysterynovels featuring librarians in a central role were studied and analysed using character theory. Recurring traitswere identified and organised into themes. A number of prominent traits and themes emerged that show librariansas orderly and organised bibliophiles, but with a taste for adventure and excitement. They are keen problem solverswho enjoy a challenge, at work, or in the form of crime detection. These traits show fairly different sides ofthe characters, and hint of librarians having something of a dubble nature.

Some of the traits resonate with findings in earlier studies in the field, but the old stereotype was only parti -ally confirmed. In general the image of librarians presented in the mystery novels is a positive one, which inmany respects also rings true against the background of actual librarians and library work.

    Abstract [en]

My essay aims to illustrate how an industrial memory is created based on Sandvik AB's premises. Industrial heritage and industrial memory are interrelated, but have different characteristics and conditions. I examine what conditions are required to create an industrial memory in the form of a museum. I describe the problems that exist in the various industrial concepts and contribute with an analysis of the different concepts. I am using Sandvik AB as a case study and by using the identified criteria for an industry memory my essay show the process in which an industrial memory can be created. I further investigate whether Sandvik AB can create a museum based on there industrial heritage. My research proves this fact and I finish the essay by proposing how a Sandvik museum in Sandviken can be designed.

My research shows that Sandvik AB fulfills the criteria for being able to create an industrial memory from there industrial heritage. My research contribute with interpretations of the concepts of industrial heritage, industrial memory, living industrial memory and industrial history landscape. My essay shows that an industrial memory can represent a living company which shows against the usual view of an industrial memory as a representative of a discontinued production. My essay also examines two consulting firms which give proposals in creating a museum, a market that can be find outside Sweden. The research also contribute with supplementary proposals for the consulting firms different steps in the process of creating a museum. From a Swedish perspective, this study therefore contributes with a first proposal for the Swedish market in creating a museum.

    Abstract [en]

In the past few decades, the ways in which we look at heritage, and what the idea of heritage entails, has evolved and changed dramatically. We are constantly working on coming to grips with its complex nature and its multi-facetted ramifications. The aim of this thesis is to explore future strategies for museums in their continued work with collecting, preserving, and managing our cultural heritage in order to become more sustainable institutions. Furthermore, the thesis investigates historically what has led to the current crisis of accumulation and a profusion of heritage, with the intention of substantiating and providing background to the alternatives presented for the future of museum collections. In addition to a literature review of past research on the subject, an analysis of collection management plans and conducted interviews from four museum institutions in Sweden was carried out. The participating institutions were the National Historical Museums, Stockholm City Museum and Medieval Museum, the National Museums of World Culture and Museum Gustavianum.

The results find that a rapid expansion of the concept of heritage to incorporate a large range of new forms of material and immaterial memory, alongside an exponential growth in the number of objects and places that are identified, collected and exhibited as cultural heritage, has contributed to a crisis of accumulation. Globalization as well as a large production growth of material things have also been assisting factors. The five strategies put forward to help museums become more sustainable institutions are: identify what your museum needs to focus on, now and in the future; if your museum does not have a collections management plan it is vital to write one; implement deaccessioning as an active collections management tool; with culture in the forefront, strive for sustainable development regarding both collections management and other museum activities; and collaborate and cooperate more with various interested parties to benefit collections development.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to study how librarians perceive the identity of the public library. This is done by focusing on how librarians perceive the library’s roles, values, and the role of the librarian. One of the analytical tools used to illustrate this complexity is theories on underlying values and identity perceptions in organizations. The method is semi structured qualitative interviews with public librarians. An initial method to structure the empirical data consists of a phenomenographic approach.

The findings show that the overall purpose of the library is to promote a democratic society where all citizens are equally valued. In order to do this the library needs to fulfill three main roles and some values. The main roles of the public library are to promote the availability of information, literature, and to be an open room for meetings. The values are to promote participation, critical thinking, and empathy among library users as well as to confirm users socially. The library’s resourses and services are valued for providng quality, variety, non-comersial intrests, and new perspectives. Furthermore, two basic values are to enrich people, eliminate inequalities, and by doing so promote human equality. The role of the librarian is to make sure that the resources and services of the library meet the criteria of all these roles and values. The librarian thus acts as an intermediary between these roles and values and the needs of the users and is therefore an important part of the library’s identity. The roles, values and the role of the librarian that make up this identity are presented in a model.

The study shows that any activity, meeting or recourse that goes against any of the roles or values might be seen as a threat against the library. Another finding is that perceptions of a limitless role of the librarian could also be considered a threat against the library’s identity.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to study and analyse collections of outsider art in two Swedish Medical History Museums, Medicinhistoriska museet in Uppsala and Mentalvårdsmuseet in Säter. The work explores how the history of the museums, how art collections were established, the outsider artist as well as how the two museums work the collections today. The empirical part of the study is based on the fieldwork that the author conducted at the Medicinhistoriska museet in Uppsala and Mentalvårdsmuseet in Säter during two separate days in the winter/spring of 2022. Both observations of the museum room were made, as well as interviews with the two curators in charge of the art collections. Attentive observations and systematic notes from constitute the basis for the description of the material and immaterial features of the museum. For the chapters on the historical and cultural context concerning outsider art, art brut, psychiatric care and how the hospitals became museums, literary sources were used.

The result of the study shows that outsider art made in a hospital is a very specific part of outsider art and art brut because of the very special conditions of an often locked psychiatric care unit. It implies that outsider art made in psychiatric care have not been seen as real art, not been viewed as interesting for the public. There has existed an authorised heritage discourse (“AHD”) in the hospitals and well as in the later museums which has led to the collections not been correctly taken care of, and research about the patients has not been made. Instead, the patients work has been stored incorrectly in attics, basements and in un-locked storage areas with only a few ”aesthetically pleasing” works showed in the museum.

Further, the study shows how the art collections in the two medical hospitals correctly used and worked with, can be a part of removing the stigma around mental disease and people living with it.

The conclusions to be drawn from this are that the complexity of the art collections of outsider art made in psychiatric care lie in the fact that mental illness, psychiatric hospitals, and outsider art have been under a stigma, as well as the fact that the patients’ stories being stories from the margin.

    Abstract [en]

Introduction. I report an investigation designed to identify the contemporary role of digital resources for information retrieval, such as Alex Author-dictionary. This study proposes that it is essential to see digital resources and their specific place within contemporary structures for information retrieval, that digital resources relate to a broader context. My focus is facts beyond giving patrons access to a specific type of information about authors.

Method. This case study uses integration of qualitative content analysis from interviewees with data analysis. A pre-search interview and data-analysis along with follow-up interviews established some interesting perspectives on Alex Author-dictionary as well as aspects on digital resources for information retrieval. Transcripts of the interviews formed the data for analysis.

Analysis. Qualitative analyses were carried out from two preparatory email-interviews, one with the editor and one with a person who writes for Alex. Another pre-search interview and two following interview sessions, one with a school librarian and another with a public librarian, were conducted.

Results. It proved possible to demonstrate that Alex Author-dictionary as such has its benefits compared to sources from the internet. The results derive from and agree with some previous studies, especially that there is a where, when and how to use different resources. The web for example could advantageously give patrons access to other formats such as video interviews etc. that the library doesn’t hold.

Conclusion. I identify a need to enlarge the scope of how patrons teach users. Users of all ages would be benefited from knowing when to use Google and when benefited using other digital resources of information retrieval. This sound awareness is directly related to users need to develop skills, and then interpret their own actual information literacy. This could take place either in sessions of user education at the library, or from teachers in a school environment.

    Abstract [en]

Introduction: This thesis investigates the relationships that curators have with the collections they oversee. The aim of the study is to learn how this relationship shapes the curators, the objects, and the storeroom itself. An additional purpose is to see whether this relationship creates and maintains a hierarchy of objects in the storerooms.

Method: Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with curators working in Sweden at Nationalmuseum of Sweden, Army Museum, Swedish Museum of Performing Arts, Museum Gustavianum, The Museum of Evolution, The Jewish Museum and Skansen. The interviews were tape recorded and the transcripts composed the data for the analysis.

Analysis: A qualitative content analysis was carried out on the data. Object-love and material punctum were used as the study’s theoretical and analytical framework. Including three concepts defined by the author as formal-, informal-, and personal- object hierarchies.

Results: Personal and emotional relationships to the collections did exist. They were intertwined with the professional relationship and formed a unique love called object-love. A love that defined and regulated both the personal and professional sides of the relationship. A combination of knowledge, intimacy, interest, and time were key factors for the formation of an emotional bond to the objects. The personal relationships further helped create personal and informal object hierarchies in the storerooms but were not exclusively responsible for them. Other factors such as formal object hierarchies and old hierarchical systems contributed to their existence.

Conclusion: Object-love is a vital part of a successful curatorship, as it drives the curators to do a good job and go the extra mile. Since prioritization is a big part of the curator’s everyday work, informal and personal object hierarchies become a necessity in the storerooms. Because of object-love these hierarchies fall in line with the museums broader mission.

Teater i det museala rummet: En jämförande analys av arbetet med dramapedagogiska metoder i England och Sverige2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Theatres and museums share many similarities with each other. Therefore, it can be beneficial for museums to use the potential that performance and museum theatre can provide. The aim of this analysis is to gain a better understanding for museums’ reasons to use drama as an educational method and the different forms of drama that are being used. The following research is a comparative analysis of the use of the theatrical play “The Wider Earth” at London’s Natural History Museum as an educational tool and the active use of creative drama in Swedish museums. The main source material consists of qualitative textual data, collected by means of semi-structured interviews with staff members of all participating museums. For an additional perspective, an interview was conducted with one of the theatrical play’s visitors and my own observations of the play were considered. The theoretical frame for this analysis consists of performance theory, Susan Bennett’s model of theatre audience’s experience and Dorothy Heathcote’s and Gavin Bolton’s view on drama as a learning medium. The empirical source material was analysed by means of content analysis. The results show that more could have been done to incorporate “The Wider Earth” into the museum’s educational program to achieve a better visitor experience. The Swedish museums that are part of this research use different forms of creative drama, but the overarching goal is to combine memorable experiences with education. The main conclusion to this research is that the museum visitor plays a considerable part in every form of creative drama in the museum space because the holistic experience is created by visitor and museum together.

Önskemuseer: En undersökning av två kompletteringprojekt drivna av Moderna museet2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the processes behind two of Moderna museets complementary projects: The Museum of Wishes and The Second Museum of Wishes. The purpose of this study is to, by using these projects, examine the connection between collections and collectors, and to examine the relationship between museums, complements of the collection and representation. The aim is to compare the projects and find out if there were different reasons, methods or other significant factors that might have affected the processes. I intend to explain how these projects can be understood as a practice of complementary collecting by relating them both to collection theory and representation.

My theoretical framework primarily consist of Susan Pearce’s research. I have chosen to incorporate her concepts of the poetics of collecting, the politics of collecting and the importance of earlier collected experience in my comparative study of the projects. In addition, I have also incorporated research about categories with the intention of relating it to Pearce. By studying literature that discusses the historical aspect of the projects, as well as articles, catalogues and documents that were contemporary with the projects, I have been able to compare the backgrounds as well as ideologies that might have influenced the projects.

The result of this study shows that although there were many differences between the methods and processes, the art works that were collected during the projects can both be interpreted as a physical changing of the collection, a changing of the structure of the collection and a changing of the identity of the museum. What the museum gathered during the projects didn’t just represent what the organizer thought the museum needed, but can also be understood as a way of changing the standard of the collection in order to be able to compete with other museums or gathering more knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

The following thesis examine the former homes of Charlotte Berlin and Wilhelmina von Hallwyl, two women who in the turn of 20th century donated their homes and collections to be museums. The purpose of this essay is to examine how Charlotte Berlin’s Museum and the Hallwyl museum work with musealization and authenticity. Both Charlotte and Wilhelmina lived their life in a changing time, where emigration, industrialization and urbanization took place. They are both women from the upper-middle class but with differences such as economic ones which has an effect of the collection and the size of their homes. Further distinctions between them is that Wilhelmina was married and Charlotte was not. Wilhelmina lived in the capital of Sweden, Charlotte in the small town called Ystad. Their similarities is found in their collections of clocks, clothes, paintings and books but most of all in their determination to make their homes museums once they were gone. They sought to make sure that their changing time could be seen through their collection. By examine how this is visible in the rooms they left 137behind, it is possible to see the relationship between the props and the authentic objects. The signs of it now being a museum, as cordons and glass stands, collaborates with the presence of the former inhabitants as well as movemements, seen through objects like chairs placed slightly obliquely. This essay also establish a new term called affective authenticity, which describe and develop the sensation of the past, the relation between the imagi-nation and the reality and the connection between people, objects and the milieu, with the importance that every-thing does not have to be all authentic, but has to mediate it. Kopior av autentiska museiföremål: och deras roll i utställningssammanhang2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay uses different angles to analyze how authentic objects and copies are used in an exhibition context. The survey focuses on four research questions. The questions concern the significance of copies in exhibitions and focuses on the relationship between the information conveyed in exhibitions and the objects used to convey the information. The questions also aim to examine the relationship between authenticity and copies and the museum visitors view on copies. The purpose of the survey is to see if the answers to these questions mean that the authentic museum objects are the most significant or if the information is the most valuable and that the objects in that case could just as easily consist of copies.

The methods used for collecting the empirical material is analyzes of relevant literature and interviews. The empirical material is used to illuminate different perspectives on the use and view of copies in exhibition contexts. Previous research is used to analyze the concepts of authenticity and copies. Classic cases of exhibitions based on copies are used to get an insight into how copies can be used in exhibitions. Part of the empirical material consists of interviews with Swedish museums, the interviews are used to investigate how museums today use copies and to perceive the museums´ views on the use of copies.

The analysis of the empirical material provides many interesting aspects on this topic, and it turns out that the researchers, the classical cases, and the interviewed museums are more or less in agreement when it comes to the use of copies in exhibition contexts. The copies are perceived to have many positive qualities that can be used in different ways in an exhibition. Overall, the reasoning leads to copies having a significant role in exhibition contexts and is a somewhat unused resource that could be used more than what it currently does.

Utredningsarbete och upprättande av maritima kulturreservat: kultur, natur och reservat2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Since 1999 it has been possible for Swedish municipalities and the Swedish county administrative board to establish cultural reserves to protect particularly valuable cultural landscape. The protective character of the cultural reserve is supposed to be equivalent to the one found in nature reserves. The separation between the two protective forms have led to a marginalization of the protection of cultural landscape. This thesis has, using Posthumanist theory, studied the investigation process preceding the establishing of three maritime cultural reserves. The thesis also investigates if the general work with cultural landscape could benefit from a Posthumanist approach. To reach the purpose of this thesis, three research questions were formed: how does laws and conventions relate to Posthumanist theory, which values are highlighted in the process of investigating valuable landscapes and how does the practical work with investigating maritime cultural landscape manifest itself?

The source material for the thesis consists of a study of documentation, laws and conventions. It also includes an interview study with informants at the Swedish heritage board, The Swedish National Maritime Museums and two persons responsible for the Cultural reserves at the municipality of Haninge and the Swedish county administrative board of Gävleborg.

Research shows that the work with managing maritime cultural landscape and preservation would benefit from the use of a Posthumanist approach. The laws and guidelines that exists, based on euro-american definitions of what a valuable landscape is, limits the informants in their work to preserve all aspects of the landscape. Nature and culture are interlaced and cannot be separated. A landscape management system that acknowledge this and allows the public to be a part of the creation of cultural heritage, will lead to a more sustainable preservation.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to identify what actions of change museums have taken to adjust to the ebb and flow of societal norms and values. The empirical evidence is based on three case studies of objects in three museums: the Birka warrior from grave Bj-581 in the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm, the G’psgolox totem pole in the Museum of Ethnography in Stockholm, and the Benin bronzes in the Museum of Ethnography in Stockholm and the British Museum in London. Through observations of objects and exhibitions in combination with interviews with museum professionals and researchers, an overall picture is created that shows traces of regulation but also remaining attributes from older times. Through theories of structuration, authorized heritage discourse, norm critique and postcolonial ideas, we highlight the strong connections between social structures, social relations and authorized governing groups that exist in the process of disentangling. With this thesis, we intend to highlight how the phenomenon of change is portrayed and managed in museums.

Museums in the west were foremost established during a time when nationalistic and colonial ideals characterized societal norms and the work that took place within museums. As a result of the preservation and presentation of the national identity, museums were often attributed with a character of identity making. Over time, the world has changed and so have the norms within society. Aspects of ethics and morals have become increasingly incorporated into discussions about power and governance. In line with these changes, museums have also had to change to stay relevant in their time. The museums hold to this day some of the old nationalistic and colonial ideals which they were built upon. The old ideals can be identified within the museums’ exhibitions, and because of this, clashes may occur between older and newer norms and values in the process of change, within which transparency becomes an important key element.

Vad sägs om Kulturen: En analys av moralen i Sverigedemokraternas och Miljöpartiets perspektiv på kultur 2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this paper is to study the morality of two opposing political parties’ perspective on culture. The political parties chosen for this paper are the Green party and the Sweden democrats. These political parties were chosen because of their stated opposition against each other as well as their categorization in political attitude test like the GAL-TAN scale. The paper uses Jonathan Haidt’s moral foundation theory as a basis to examine the morality of the two political parties. Moral Foundation theory is a theory of moral psychology that uses evolutionary principles to describe how morality evolved in humans and what the foundations of morality are. These moral foundations are according to Haidt: Care, Fairness, Authority, Loyalty, Sanctity and Freedom. The material used for this paper are election manifestos and other policy programmes of both political parties. The method used is discourse analysis. The analysis of the material shows that both parties put forth similar political propositions in regard to culture. The main difference between both political parties is on which moral foundation the political proposition was put forth. This was most evident in cases where the political proposition was effectively the same, but the moral motivation behind the proposition was based on different moral foundations.

"Hemliga museer": En studie kring museers representation av erotiska samlingar2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – This thesis investigates why archaeological museums tend to have a separate section for erotic and/or sexual objects. The aim is to understand why these rooms are needed and if they are considered outdated in the year 2020. Three case studies will be discussed in this thesis: Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, Altes Museum, and Museo Arqueológico Rafael Larco Herrera.

Analysis – The qualitative data collected through interviews will be analyzed and presented in case studies. I apply two theories: power theory according to Michel Foucault and Clive Grey and queer theory.

Method – To answer my questions, I interview museum workers responsible for the erotic display from the three case studies. All museums have a separate exhibition regarding erotic objects, so-called "secret museums". Methods that have been in use is qualitative method together with phenomenology.

Findings – The findings show that the phenomenon “secret museum” was born in the mid-1700s when Pompeii and Herculaneum were excavated and several objects with erotic motives were found. Today several archaeological museums exhibit these objects in separate rooms, sometimes with restrictions. When these exhibitions were first formed only educated men were allowed to enter. It was considered that the objects would be misunderstood by the lower class and even hurt the relationship between men and women if women were to be exposed to pornography. The results from the three case studies show that people are still sensitive to objects regarding erotica or sexualities and that the separate area is for the visitors to choose if they want to enter or not. The result also shows that there is a respect for the history around this phenomenon and the rooms are in themselves museology history that needs to be preserved.

    Abstract [en]

This essay deals with the use of archival excavations documents among archeologists, with the focus on the Swedish excavation in Labraunda, Turkey. The purpose with this study was to facili- tate the work at archival institutions with excavation documents, and to create more knowledge about the use of archival excavation documents. This study can also help the archival institutions to preserve and mediate this type of documentation. In addition, this study also adds more knowledge about what type of archival documentation the users prefer to use. Method that have been used are interviews, which six persons that have or are working with documentation from Labraunda. In addition with, document studies are used as a complement, where publications, based on archival document from Labraunda, written by the interviewed individuals have been studied. Con- cluding of this study is that the archeologists using archived excavation documentation needs to process the documents before any contemporary analysis can be made. Moreover, it seems that it is a patchwork between using their own and others documentation, to fill in the information gaps or find similarities. Furthermore, some of the most used document types is, according to this study, photographs and drawings of ceramics.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to understand how museums make their establishment accessible, if there are any obstacles in their accessibility and in that case what effects this can cause. The thesis examines accessibility at seven museums in Stockholm by participatory observation area with focus on the visitor experience for wheelchair users. The thesis also investigates whether lack of accessibility and inclusion had any possible effect on the visitor experience by means of interviews and content analysis of the accessibility information provided on the museums' websites and annual reports on what measures have been taken by the museum to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.

The results from all seven investigated museums demonstrated that physical accessibility was taken into account but to a certain extent, there have been lifts, ramps, accessible entrances and accessibility-adapted toilets. There were also some positive aspects of accessibility that transcended the most basic accessibility guidelines. Obstacles were identified during all seven observations and these mainly related to exclusionary design of the exhibitions, which in turn affected the visitor experience negatively. The interviews showed that the informants had experienced obstacles at the specified museums and also other museums. In summary, it can be stated that all aspects of accessibility affect the visitor experience, even if the overall experience is positive. Obstacles in accessibility can have negative effects both on the visitor experience but also individually with a negative impact on feelings of independence and/or belonging. The museums' annual reports and the accessibility information from the museums' websites all showed that they are actively working with accessibility, although the extent to which varies. The accessibility information could vary in how well the accessibility adaptations were described and there were few measures reported for people with reduced mobility in the museum’s annual reports. This compiled material demonstrated that there is a knowledge gap regarding accessibility at the museums and together with the material from the interviews and the observations it can be claimed that there are several measures the museums can take to improve accessibility. Finally, a lack of inclusion and accessibility has major effects both on an individual and a societal level. The effects on the individual level have already been mentioned as a negative impact on feelings of independence and belonging but also a negative impact on the self-image. In summary, the effects on the societal level can be claimed to be low levels of participation in people with disabilities and a maintenance of prevailing normative systems that have a negative effect on inclusion and diversity.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines uncontested human remains from a staff- and institutional perspective in Scandinavia. Focusing on Sweden and Denmark, this study aims to understand more of the practice and approach concerning the Egyptian mummy, Bog bodies and Relics. Today, human remains are debated and treated in different ways depending on different ethical issues concerning the category. Here, we can talk about contested and uncontested human remains. Contested human remains is, for example, ancestral remains belonging to indigenous groups or remains of a more modern date that are deemed for have been inappropriately handled historically. The uncontested human remains however, are remains that do not fit in given examples above and that have not been seen as problematic as the contested human remains. With that said, the uncontested human remains are more prone to be covered, moved around or discussed, but in the end of the day they are still there in the exhibition or in the collection and not removed. This study is based on Tiffany Jenkins (2011) definition about the contested and uncontested and Berit Sellevold’s (2013) figure of ethical aspects in which groups of people and researchers view certain remains. Arisen from these theories and the earlier research of human remains this study attempts to examine the practice and the approach about uncontested human remains. The result of the nine case studies in this thesis shows that the Egyptian mummy, Bog bodies and Relics are used and being used for bringing human beings closer the human remains as the individuals they are and for telling stories of the past. In a concrete way of understanding this, it is the staff of the institution that makes this use and approach possible neither if it’s connecting humans to the individual, the history or the religious sphere. Two main results from this study are that the appearance and context are highly affecting whether the institution, mainly the museum, chooses to exhibit uncontested human remains or not.

Drawing Things Together: Understanding the Challenges and Opportunities of a Cross-LAM Approach to Digital Game Preservation and Exhibition2019In: Nordisk kulturpolitisk tidskrift, ISSN 1403-3216, E-ISSN 2000-8325, Vol. 22, no 2, p. 332-354, article id 8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Digital games have become a central part of contemporary culture and society. At the same time digital games provide numerous challenges for collections, preservation efforts, documentation, and exhibitions. This article investigates the challenges and opportunities implicit in LAM convergence and collaboration with actors outside of the LAM-sector itself. These actors are stakeholders of various kinds within game culture: game makers and industry, players, and rogue archives. More specifically, we turn to the collaboration in two Nordic museums in their work with digital games: The Finnish Museum of Games and the National Swedish Museum of Science and Technology. We draw on their actual efforts at collaboration between LAM-institutions and outside stakeholders and analyze them through the lens of political participation and agonistic pluralism. These concepts come from an interpretation of the participatory agenda in cultural policy that aims to resolve inconsistencies in the participatory agenda specifically around neoliberal logics of participation.

The paper asks: How can the preservation of digital games be supported through participation of stakeholders inside and outside the LAM sector, and what policy changes would such collaborations require?

This paper concludes that political participation and agonistic pluralism are useful concepts for the modeling and understanding of game preservation and provide a possible solution for the paradoxes of the participatory agenda in Nordic cultural policy. Our comparison of the work in two museums shows that approaches that empower participants can lead to successful and surprising exhibitions not possible without the sharing of curatorial power. Policy regulating LAM-institutions should change in order to accommodate players, makers, and rogue archives as participants in game preservation efforts. For the future the participatory agenda in cultural policy should be interpreted through the lens of political participation and agonistic pluralism as calling for truly empowering participants in order to elevate participation in game preservation from lucky accidents to a political participation policy.

Om unga kulturkonsumenter och icke-linjära texter på bibliotek.: En fallstudie av bibliotekarierna i Unggruppen och deras arbete med ett vidgat textbegrepp.2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The introduction of this two years master´s thesis points out the influence of various media on society, and subsequent effects on human behavior and self-awareness. The modern day librarian needs to take this into account when developing new tools, which correspond to society’s view of text. The purpose of this study is to investigate how librarians engage in promoting reading in the changing textual landscape of today’s society. The result is a qualitative case study examining the views of the workgroup Unggruppen at Uppsala Public Library on this topic. In the chapter “Background and prior research” a presentation of research on contemporary text, the promotion of reading among children and teenagers and public library outreach towards the young is presented.

A sociocultural perspective as described by Roger Säljö supports the theoretical framework. These theories highlight the idea of human subjectivity and communication within a social context by means of cultural tools. In order to be able to analyze the featured cultural tools, notions of theories by Colin Lankshear and Michele Knobels in the field of New Literacies are used.

The material of the analysis consists of six qualitative interviews, one observation and an analysis of a document. This study approaches questions of how an “expanded concept of text” is perceived, how Unggruppen mediates its cultural tools and how the context of the library affects the development of tools employed by Unggruppen.

The final discussion indicates that Unggruppen considers that the “expanded concept of text” might increase the rate of reading and self-confidence of young people.  The conclusion is explained trough a metaphor depicting the “expanded concept of text” as a cycle benefitting both individual and media. An institutionalization of the ”expanded concept of text” is put in relation to Uppsala Public Library’s role as a non-profit zone of contemporary text. The result of the study also shows that Unggruppen mainly mediates new cultural tools through the competence of others. Thus the effect of a secondary or a direct mediation is discussed. Finally, the importance of considering the content of young people’s literacy activities while preparing a space for this within the physical context of the public library is emphasized.  The overall conclusion, looking at the case of Unggruppen, is the democratic empowerment of young people within the library. This is made possible by the librarians’ continuous notion of emerging cultural tools within and outside the context of the library.

Aktivitetspedagogik på svenska museer: En studie om kulturella föremål i pedagogiska visningar2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on the educational activities carried out in Swedish museums. Activity pedagogy is a concept that concerns learning with a combination of activities. The museums meet a new generation of museum visitors who want to experience and participate in the educational activities. As going from being passive participants to active actors becomes more natural, this could create a problem för the museums. The pedagogical tools that are available today for the museum educators are based on cultural-historical objectess and clothes that have a direct connection to the historical time period the museum manages. The museums act as an arena för knowledge, but it has been stated that there are shortcomings in the educational activities. The basis is the objects that are available in the museums exhibition and the educational offer is based o the exhibitions, but there is an opportunity to discuss and highlight other topics. Tactile spaces and digital tools have begun to become a more natural of the museum's activities, but there are pros and cons to it. The study is based on the educational activities carried out at Old Uppsala Museum and the Nordic Museum. A combination of observation and interview studies, but also current research of museum pedagogy has been the basis for this study. The result is that the tools available in today's museums have a basic idea, but that there is room for development. Offering visitors to participate and make suggestions for improvment is a step in the right direction. Activity pedagogy and object-based tours must be preformed for each visitor group, regardless of age. It has emerged in my study that objects incorporated in the displays increase the quality of the guided tour.

Hållbar kulturarvsturism i Visby: En diskursanalys av utvecklingsplaner för världsarvet2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: This is a two years master's thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies. The purpose of this thesis was to critically examine discourses of sustainable cultural tourism, and how different sustainability dimensions and ideals can coexist and be applied in practice. The starting point was a case study of the World Heritage Site “The Hanseatic town of Visby”, where the relationship between the conservation and the availability of the world heritage site was investigated. The research questions that were formulated were which actors and agendas that cooperate in the production of sustainable heritage tourism, how global and national guidelines for sustainable cultural tourism correspond to the local development work of the Visby world heritage city, which are the prominent discourses in the documents on sustainable heritage tourism in the world heritage city of Visby and how they are described as well as whether there is opposition between the conservation and the availability of cultural heritage, and what potential solutions to such opposition can look like.

Theory: Prior to the study, previous research on sustainability, sustainable heritage tourism and the world heritage site Visby has been studied and used as a springboard for the thesis research questions. The theoretical perspectives that were used in the analysis consisted of theories regarding sustainable tourism, posthumanism, system theory and authorized heritage discourse, AHD.

Method: The method chosen for the study was Laclau & Mouffes discourse analysis. This enabled a closer examination of the development plans and documents on sustainable heritage tourism produced by local, national and global actors. This was complemented with short interviews with thirteen stakeholders.

Results and analysis: The result and analysis showed that several different actors and agendas are involved in the production of sustainable heritage tourism. However, there are difficulties in letting all actors get their voices heard and being part of the decision-making process, such as the local population, which are often disregarded. In addition, interaction between different actors could get better with more clearly defined areas of responsibility. The result also showed that, in particular, the concepts of sustainability and sustainable develop-ment were used in the documents about the development of the world heritage city of Visby, but the concept of sustainable heritage tourism was rarely used. The Swedish National Heritage Board and the region of Gotland are currently working on developing sustainable tourism strategies. At present, however, there is unclear correspondence between global guidelines and local application, where it is up to the municipalities to interpret and apply Unesco’s guidelines themselves, which may be difficult since the guidelines are quite general and vague. The study also showed that there are three clear discourses in the documents about sustainable heritage tourism. Under the overall discourse of sustainable tourism in Visby there is an ecological discourse, an economic discourse and a social discourse. In all documents, sustainable tourism is described as consisting of three discourses, but there is great freedom of interpretation in the use of the term. The discourses are also prioritized and described differently in different documents.

Conclusion: The study's conclusion is that there are both oppositions and solutions. Both documents and interviews show that there are oppositions between ecological, economic and social interests in a place like the world heritage site in Visby. At the same time, there are also various suggestions for how the different dimensions can coexist and the actors were generally optimistic. Basically, it is about finding a balance between conservation and accessibility, taking into account both contemporary and future interests. Suggested solutions are to work further with information and knowledge, improve interaction between different actors, work with conservation-based development, productize heritage, better interaction with the local society, develop creative industries in historical buildings, and include visitors in the conservation work. However, most voices agree that the issue is difficult and complex and requires more knowledge and research.

Exit game? Any unsaved progress will be lost: En praktikteoretisk analys av relationen mellan svenska spelföretag och ABM-institutioner2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis analyzes the relationship between Swedish video game companies and the institutions for Archive, Libraries and Museums (ALM). The aim is to further the discussion regarding preservation of digital games. The thesis is based on semi-structured interviews with four video game companies and three institutions; an archive, a library and a museum. The theoretical foundation resides within practice theory, with the assumption that a practice is a combination of what people do and what they say. By analyzing what video game companies say they do the authors ascertain which methods of preservation is currently. The analysis is a cross-examination of the seven interviews with the result indicating that while video game companies are interested in the preservation of digital games they do not participate actively in the discussion on the best method of doing so. Communica- tion between video game companies and ALM institutions has room for improvement, as it is virtually non- existent. Furthermore, the findings indicate different motivations for preserving games and it is unclear which perspective the preservation should have; a technical perspective, cultural perspective or for the company’s bene- fit. In conclusion the current situation is that ALM institutions preserve games with a cultural and/or a technical perspective while game companies preserve their games for the company’s benefit.

Cultural heritage, Democracy and the Labour Market2010Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This project aims to investigate if the system of ’wage subsidy’ coupled with of Lifelong Learning can result in more democratic museums and archives. The study is based on archive studies and field studies and qualitative interviews. Interviews was conducted with people in ‘wage subsidy’ programmes and people in management positions at Jamtli and the Regional Archives in Östersund and questions centres around Lifelong Learning, learning in general and the ‘wage subsidy’ system. The ethnographic material was analysed using theories on Lifelong Learning and workplace learning. I argue in this paper that learning is situated to certain contexts, e.g., the museum and archive, to the pedagogical profile, to the social and political context. I discuss these contexts in terms of Lifelong Learning and EU and Swedish labour market and cultural policies. I come to the conclusion that heritage institution is dependent on people in ‘wage subsidy’ programmes to continue to exist and to further a democratic heritage. I argue, furthermore, that Lifelong Learning needs to better define within the heritage sector if it is to be utilised in terms of labour market measures and democratisation of heritage. If museums and archives want to use Lifelong Learning as a method for personal development among people in labour market measures they need to better define the goals with Lifelong Learning. I therefore come to the conclusion that Lifelong Learning is best used as a method to approach attitudes to the society rather than investigate learning, as learning is assumed within this theory. If museums and archives are approached from this angle, Lifelong Learning can be used as a method to evaluate the heritage production.

(Re) Doing Men in Museum Exhibitions? Masculinities and the Democratization of Heritage in South Africa.2016In: Critical Perspectives on Masculinities and Relationalities: In relation to what? / [ed] Anneli Häyrén, Helena Wahlström Henriksson, Springer, 2016, p. 67-96Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter explores how democratization of heritage was played out in South African museums focusing on how museum curator represented men in exhibitions during the South African democratization process. The chapter investigates a variety of exhibitions and curatorial practices at two South African museums: the KwaZulu-Natal Museum and the Msunduzi Museum incorporating the Voortrekker complex both located in the town of Pietermaritzburg in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The material is analyzed using masculinity and performance theory revealing and explaining how hegemonic masculine heteronormative agendas in heritage presentations are protected, promoted, and also glorified in a democratic South Africa. In doing so this study seeks to question the notion that democratization has been unproblematically presented as “successful,” arguing that this claim can only be made if gender is not taken into account.

Transforming Collections : Socio-political discourses of heritage2009Conference proceedings (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Before and after the South African democratic election in 1994 South African museums had in earnest started to reconsider the production of heritage. This is referred to as Transformation and entails a transition from apartheids racial and unjust society to democracy. Transformation in terms of museums led to a body of negotiations concerning laws, regulations and policy documents aimed to change the outcome of heritage production and find new ways to represent a multicultural South Africa. This paper aims to address Transformation in collections based on field research (2004-2007) carried out in ‘Msunduzi Museum Incorporating the Voortrekker Complex’ and the ‘Natal Museum’ both located in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The museums represent an Afrikaner respectively an anglophile institutions that has become multicultural institutions. I will exemplify how Transformation in collections was brought about, what was changed and what remained and how the museums negotiated acts and policy documents to alter heritage productions. Coupled with Transformation is the critique of museums as eurocentric, colonial and apartheid productions given negative association. This is employed to polarise Transformation against past eras to locate the political position from where Transformation is argued. However the critique only reflects a simplified version of a complex heritage landscape and I will explain the many similarities in the articulation and consistency of collections in past and present times to highlight the multivocal and complex socio-political transition of South African museums.

Bernhard Schmidts kvarlåtenskap och det globala kulturarvet2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master thesis is about the Estonian-Swedish astro-optician Bernhard Schmidt (1879-1935) and his legacy. He was born on the island of Nargö outside Tallinn in Estonia. In 1930 he invented a special optical system for telescopes called the Schmidt telescope or Schmidt camera. At that time Bernhard Schmidt was working as a freelance at the Bergedorf observatory outside Hamburg in Germany. His invention contributed to astronomical research which changed our view of the sky and of the universe. The time he was living in was politically turbulent and science was flourishing. The written sources about Bernhard Schmidt and his telescope are mainly published in German, Russian, Estonian and English. Almost nothing is published in Swedish. The sources to his personal history and the archive material concerning him are partly scattered and it is difficult to assemble a complete picture.

The purpose is to find and to map out what kind of archive material is preserved about him. The aim is also to find out who is in charge of it and how accessible it is. Is there global access to the material? Observatories, museums and archives in Sweden, Germany and Estonia were visited to map his legacy. The theories of James Cuno (2008) and the triad or three principles of management: preservation, knowledge and access were used in the analysis of the findings. Most material is kept and preserved at the Hamburg Bergedorf observatory, University of Hamburg. This is also the place where Bernhard Schmidt spent the last years of his life and it is here we can find his burial site. At the Hamburg Bergedorf observatory today there is a Bernhard Schmidt archive, a Schmidt museum with the first prototype of his telescope and an archive of photographic plates with photographic pictures of the stars and other astronomical objects. The two archives are in a digitalizing process and when completed they will be globally accessible and a part of our global heritage.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the social life and cultural biography of five objects from the Valsgärde-collection at museum Gustavianum in Uppsala, Sweden. The aim of this study was to research the social life and cultural biography of five objects from the collection and what this means in relation to collections management, authenticity, digitalization and object-love. There is a special focus on authenticity and digitalization throughout the essay. There are mixed methods in the thesis, two interviews, phenomenology and object-based learning. The theoretical frame-work of the thesis were The Social Life of Things as well as authenticity, digitalization and collections management. In the analysis it showed that the social life of things as well as the cultural biography of things is something that is constantly constructed, and will shift and grow throughout time. The analysis also showed that a proper collections management will improve the cultural biography of things, it will also improve a more authentic digitalization.

The conclusion of the thesis is that the social life of things is dynamic, even though some information may seem static. A cultural biography is possible to write about objects, however, not only one person can do this since we need academics from different branches to try and understand the objects. It is also important to when possible research the objects with your hands, in order to research one owns feelings. Further research on the topic could be done by more researchers investigating the objects, as well as a combination of testing of the material in order to trace the objects’ cultural biography in the prehistoric age.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis will examine how corporate archive can be used by companies in branding and communication. The main question is: How can corporate archives be used to emphasize and shape corporate brands and identities?

Taking the overall issue into consideration, the thesis looks at any archival materials from the corporate archives that the corporate uses to reproduce their history and corporate identity, and how different archival types of materials interact on the corporates websites. Furthermore, this thesis compares the use of archival material on each corporates historical sites.

The source material consists of sites that six different corporates in collaboration developed with the Centre for Business History (CfN) were the different types of records used to present the corporate and its history. My starting point is that corporate archives and marketing in a compound is not specifically represented in research linked to the field of research of archival science. Therefore, this thesis combines corporate archive opportunities with theories of organizational framework of Corporate Identity as well as the relatively new concept History Marketing. Corporate archives can be connected with these concepts in order to increase the impact beneficial to the corporates communication and marketing.

Images are the archival objects the get the most space and appear more frequently, on the websites. They are more accessible in the way they produce different things at the same time the viewer is free to interpret them. Even text documents and films are represented in the corporate archives by choice. By using archival materials, older advertising campaigns can be produced in contemporary light, with original material.

Movies and photos can describe the same events and provide a broader perspective. Combined, they can complement each other in an article. Since archival material consists of different types of materials, older advertising campaigns can be reconstructed and shown again. Some sites use a picture to describe a sequence of events while others use multiple images.

This study shows how corporates have chosen to emphasize and promote their brand and identity by launching websites on which the information is based on corporate archives. Corporates varied activities play a role in which archival materials you choose and why. The archive material becomes part of the corporate identity both on internal organizational plan and external stakeholder consciousness.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to compare how the mathematics departments at Uppsala University and Alvar Aalto University relate to and manage their collections of mathematical models. In the thesis the importance of individuals in relation to this type cultural heritage and the situation for university collections will be discussed. Therefore the individuals’ interpretations of the approach are a major part of the study. Questions regarding the collections condition, placement, role, the knowledge about them and the responsibility for them are discussed and analysed.

The methods used in the study were qualitative and taped interviews were done with three informants. The method of observation was also used to study the condition and placement of the collections and data was also collected from e-mail and conversations. The theories chosen for this study are phenomenology, cultural heritage and ideas of objects containing social ideas.

The result from the study shows that the universities relate to and manage their collections differently. The collection at Aalto University has been cared for, been made available and used in teaching, which has resulted in that the awareness of it is high. At Uppsala University the majority of the collection is in poor condition and it is almost considered forgotten by the department. A few of the objects have been used in teaching. The collection has not been made available to students or employees. The study has also found that university collections could be considered museum objects as well tools for teaching and research. Universities are not museums, their main goal is not to care for huge collections and this affects their values and the management of them. Individuals have a significant impact on how university collections are managed and made available although this varies depending on the responsibility taken by the department itself. If the individuals’ knowledge about the collections is recorded, the collections are managed better.

    Abstract [en]

In this explorative and collectively written paper, researchers and archivists from the research project Children’s cultural heritage — the visual voices of the archive ponder, wrestle with, confront, and dig deeper into what it means to preserve and include children’s own voices in archives. The authors acknowledge that child-produced cultural objects are historical landmarks and significant parts of national heritage. The article raises questions about where and how the ‘doing’ of what is here called children’s cultural heritage takes place, what it means to archive from children’s perspectives, and what aspects of children are saved during these preservation and archival management processes. To collect, preserve and provide access to heritage might empower and affirm individuals and subordinated groups of people who have not been seen or heard in the historical past, in the present, or in future pasts. Children, as a category, is one such subordinated group in heritage contexts. Adults therefore have a responsibility to empower children by strengthening their position towards other social groups, towards society and the heritage domain. This article provides insights into the challenges that heritage establishments face in taking children’s cultural heritage seriously.

"Det är svårt med information på nått sätt": En fallstudie av Stockholms universitetsbiblioteks informationskultur2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine the information culture at Stockholm University library. The thesis examines how information culture affects information management and if the information culture is different within the organization. In order to investigate whether there are differences, two groups were studied: one consisting of four individuals in leading positions and one consisting of four employees. The thesis is based on a qualitative case-study method, where interviews and documents are used as a method to collect data and to gain a deeper understanding of respondent’s values, norms and behaviours towards information. Davenport & Prusak’s theoretical model An Ecological Model for Information Management  is used to study the organization as an ecosystem. The perspective on information management has been holistic, behaviour-oriented and human-centered. To gain knowledge about the information culture at Stockholm University library, Curry & Moore’s model The Evolution of Information Culture  has been used. The model consists of six components suggested necessary for information culture to flourish. The six components have been used as a theoretical framework and analytical tool to examine the information culture at Stockholm University library. The thesis identifies weaknesses in the information culture at Stockholm University library. Results in the thesis illustrates cultural differences between the two groups, regarding how information should be handled in the organization in relation to how it is actually managed in practice. These findings further show that information management in the organization is not as efficient as it could be. Stockholm University library has recently undergone a major reorganization and change of management, aspects which have been taken into consideration as they could have effect on the results. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library studies.

Effektiv och transparent, men subjektiv och sårbar: En studie av arkivariers syn på den verksamhetsbaserade arkivredovisningen2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The focus of the thesis is to investigate how four university archivists perceive the functionality of the new Swedish process-oriented archival description system. University archivists are at the center of the study since the organizational structure of a university is process-oriented to some degree. However universities still have activities that are more challenging to view as processes, such as research. Universities were thus identified as a suitable candidate to analyze how process-oriented archival description functions in an environment that both is and is not clearly process-oriented.

The research questions posed in this study are all related to the new archival description model, and archivists own experiences and views of the system. The main questions in the study concern the functionality of the system, its durability (if there is a repeated call for modification of the model), how the archival description system works with organizations that are not process-oriented, as well as if the system can operate as a finding aid in a long term perspective.

The theoretical aim of the study is based around two different and sometimes contrasting views on the nature of archival records; namely the life cycle- and continuum-model. According to the life cycle-perspective records follow a linear-path from birth to death, reaching pre-destined pit stops along the way. The continuum theorists imagine records not as linear but as multifaceted, having multiple lives and never reaching a “death”-state. In Sweden, earlier research has shown that the life cycle-model has dominated the archival scene, but the new process-oriented archival description system could open up for a continuum-related approach.

This study shows that no archivist made any statements that hinted in a continuum-way of thinking, and the results rather substantiated earlier research claiming the dominance of the life cycle-model. Investigation results show that three out of four archivists don’t believe that the archival description model is suitable for universities, as the organizational structure is not process-oriented. All of the archivists are struggling with describing activities as process-based, and three out of four archivists claim that description ends upcontrived. All archivists however concur that the positive effects of the system could result in government agencies increases transparency and accountability, but only if the system works as intended. The long term durability of the description model is also put in question from three out of four archivists. All archivists additionally regard the model as sensitive to organizational changes, and all universities are preparingfor and expecting numerous future modifications. The conclusion of the study is that the process-oriented archival description system is difficult to apply to organizations that have activities with unclear processes.

The results furthermore indicate that the system needs continuous effort to maintain, due to the nature of ever changing organizations. As a finding aid the model is viewed as flawed, as the classification schema will be revised several times, which will certainly demand that the user have assistance in understanding the schema. All archivists claim that the archival function (and not the classification schema) of the university will be the main search tool for all users in the future.

Att fylla luckor i samlingarna?: Dokumentations- och insamlingsprojekt på svenska arkiv2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Traditionally archives have been regarded as repositories where documents naturally generated in the different processes of organisations are stored, the emphasis being on “naturally generated”. Responsible for the long-term preservation of these records is the always objective and neutral archivist whose task is to make sure that the records will not get corrupted and can be used as evidence. In the past few decades, however, the archival community has become more and more aware of the fact that certain groups, voices and histories – mainly those of ordinary people – are missing from the archives. The purpose of this thesis was to examine how archives in Sweden approach this issue and what efforts they make to fill these gaps in their collections.

I examined three kinds of archival institutions: city archives, private archives and museum archives. By analysing their survey response and project documentation (when not available, interviews), I aimed to find out what arguments they had for and against documenting society and what groups, events or places they documented. The research showed that most public archives did not engage in such activities as most of them did not even think it was their task to collect and/or create new documents. The few institutions that have or have had documentation projects focused mainly on local people and the history of the town they were located in. When it comes to private archives, the attitude was completely different and they regard these projects as a significant part of their work. Almost all of the private institutions I contacted have an active outreach programme where they either create new primary source documents themselves or inform organisations in the private sector about the importance of documenting their activities and preserving the documentation. Museum archives were a special case: since the museums I studied document different places, phenomena and groups the documents created automatically fill certain gaps in their archives. Filling the gaps is, however, seldom the main goal of their projects and they focus more on how the new primary sources can be used in the future, for instance in exhibitions.

The argumentation behind these projects varied, some institutions argued that certain experiences and memories had to be documented before it is too late while others emphasised the importance of documenting our time for future generations. Other arguments occur too, such as gaps in the collections that need to be filled or helping a certain group integrate who, by contributing their stories, can participate in writing the town’s history.

Fotots väg från arkivboxen till allmänheten: En dokumentation av DiBiS digitaliseringsprocess samt en studie av digitaliseringens följder2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of my one year master’s thesis is to add a documentation of a data processing-process of photo- graphs to the administration of archives. The thesis is written from an archival science perspective which is to be seen in my choice of literature, method and questions at issue. To be able to form a documentation of a data processing-process I studied DiBiS, a company specialized in digitalizing old photographs and publish them on a online database. I also added a chapter where I studied how archival institutions used to handle their old photo- graphs in a traditional manner so the reader of this thesis will be able to understand and see the differences be- tween traditional and modern photograph management. Following the chapters describing traditional and modern management I formulated some questions at issue about the data-processing-process. Those questions I studied and analyzed in chapters about advantages and the complex of problems surrounding the subject. I came to the conclusion that there are a lot of advantages surrounding the data processing-process, especially from an ar- rangement- preservation and access point of view. I also came to the conclusion that the problems with data processing is the exaggerated focus on the photographic subject, the mistake of thinking that a digital copy of the subject can replace the original photograph and that retouch might distort the original outcome and therefore not live up to  archival science standards. To my assistance I had Katarina Nordin, archivist at Arkiv Gävleborg and, among others, Ingrid Fallström, ar- chivist at DiBiS. Specialist technical literature used during my work with this thesis have been Anna Dahlgrens and Pelle Snickars (red.) Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates the factors that influence whether visitors to art exhibitions experience accessible introductory art labels or not. From the need of making art exhibitions and their communication available to more people of society the aim with this study is to increase awareness about the factors that influence accessibility and generate ideas about useful theory concerning accessible labels. By connecting theory concerning the purpose of art exhibitions, the social context of art exhibitions, orientation and disorientation and different views related to exhibition labels the author, by influence from the swedish Special pedagogy educational authority (Specialpedagogiska skolmyndigheten) accessibility model ”tillgänglighetsmodellen”, creates a accessibility model concerning the context of introductory art labels. The study gathered material from visitor interviews and observations from two different art exhibition institutions in Stockholm: Bonniers Konsthall and Spritmuseum, one art gallery and one cultural museum with an art exhibition feature. The analysis from the field work then formed the content of the accessibility model concerning the context of introductory art labels. As a background to the ideas behind the labels interviews where also performed with personnel in command of the communication concerning the labels. The results show that the visitors experience of accessible introductory art labels can be related to physical, social and pedagogical factors. Where the physical factors included reading situation, placing, lighting and soundscape. The social factors included other visitors, the willingness to ”do things right” and disorientation, confusion and uncertainty. The pedagogical factors included legibility, readability and well worth reading. The study also shows that the visitors pre-knowledge of art and habit of visiting art exhibitions could influence the visitors experience of accessibility. Where visitors without pre-knowledge about art history in the art gallery Bonniers Konsthall all found the texts non-accessible depending on a mix of physical, social and pedagogical factors. At the cultural museum Spritmuseum however visitors without pre-knowledge of art could find the text accessible. There a positive experience of the reading situation, including lightning and few other visitors, made visitors feel that the text where more accessible even when they experienced some difficulty with the accessibility related to pedagogical factors like text length. The study shows that the different factors of accessibility related to introductory art labels interacted and influenced the overall experience of text accessibility.

This is a two years master's thesis in Museum and cultural heritage studies.
