Negotiating Involuntary Resettlement: A study of local bargaining during the construction of the Zimapán dam2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation seeks to present and analyze the negotiation process between the Mexican Power Board (CFE) and the peasants of Ejido Vista Hermosa, who were displaced by the building of the Zimapán dam in central Mexico. I use these negotiations as a focal point to identify the strategies, the reasoning, the priorities, and the conflicts of interest of the two main actors in the resettlement project. I try to grasp and describe some of the items, events and transformations that made up the negotiations during the implementation phase. My attempts have been to show how highly dynamic, multileveled and multifaceted the negotiation process was and how profound and extensive the impacts were in the resettled peasant society. Furthermore, I also demonstrate how a powerful national institution, the CFE, was affected by the process and that an unexpected and dynamic field of social interaction developed between the main actors during the most intense period of the implementation phase.

My main conclusion is that the resettled peasants faced a disarticulation of their society. The experts dismantled their society and chopped it up into small defined units (economic, political, social) with an emphasis on the material aspects (gate for gate, tree for tree). The peasants' way of life was scrutinized, objectified, quantified and evaluated. It was emptied of its cultural content and it became abstract and negotiable. The peasants, too, had to take a step back and look at their society with new eyes. They had to make up their minds, under the severe time pressure of the technical schedule for the building of the dam, which set the agenda, what they wanted to do with their future lives. Under these circumstances, they had to negotiate about cultural key symbols: the river, the land and the trees. This objectification, which was necessary for the negotiations, seems to have unraveled a delicate underlying socio-cultural fabric.

Throughout the thesis, I have emphasized an ethnographic perspective, even though I have touched upon theoretical issues concerning time and space structures, events and transformations within the local system. I seek this ethnographic specificity because I see it as a way out of the simplistic duality of global contra local and as a way to avoid viewing the negotiations as an inflexible, hierarchical one-way relation.

On the Austere Conception of Nonsense2002In: Persons. An interdisciplinary dialogue: Papers of the 25th International Wittgenstein Symposium / [ed] Christian Kanzian, Josef Quitterer and Edmund Runggaldier, Kirchberg am Wechsel: ALWS , 2002, Vol. 10, no 37, p. 25-27Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I criticize James Conant’s account of the ”austere conception of nonsense”. 1) Conant tells us that no distinctions are made within nonsense, according to the “austere conception of nonsense”. I argue that this is not the case. 2) Conant claims that there can be no fixed answers to whether a remark is nonsensical or not. He also provides a list of remarks that must be understood as meaningful. 3) I argue that it follows from Conant’s account that the success of the philosophical project of the Tractatus depends on the reader undergoing a certain psychological process. It is however crucial for Wittgenstein, according to Conant, to follow Frege in the separation between philosophy and psychology.

Studier i Christian Geists vokalmusik2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is an historical and analytical study of the vocal works of Christian Geist (c1650–1711), composed for the royal Swedish court and for the German church in Gothenburg. Theoretically it draws on the model of genre history advocated by Carl Dahlhaus.

The first three chapters deal with Geist’s biography and milieu, the manuscript sources and the uses of his music. The second part deals with Geist’s compositions, and the relation between use, musical design and genre traditions are studied. The compositions are analysed and interpreted as individual solutions to problems in the history of composition, related to questions of genre and to important changes in compositional techniques from around 1650.

A typical feature of Geist’s music is a resistance to regular solutions. This is manifested in the reciprocal relation between the use of generic and schematic models on the one hand, and the constant effort to break, differentiate and modify these models. The most individualistic solutions are to be found in his settings of Latin devotional poetry, some of which were composed for royal Communion services. These are designed as clearly sectionalised, stylistically differentiated arias with very strong affect, accomplished mainly by harmonic means. His concertos for regular worship services and solemn occasions stay closer to the norms of the genre. Still, they are marked by the integration of a modern, italianate approach to harmony based on cadence progressions and a regular grouping of phrases, which radically changes the design of the concerto textures.

Fautes de français2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This empirically based study aims at establishing the frequency, distribution, tenacity and the nature of errors produced by more than 700 advanced Swedish learners of French, at different university levels. The errors are classified in grammatical and lexical categories. Four grammatical categories (articles, nouns, pronouns, verbs) have been selected for a thorough examination, and examples of different types of errors are presented and commented upon. The error analysis follows, principally, the steps suggested by Corder (1974) and implies the discussion of such concepts as error, norm and usage.

The verbs present the most frequent and tenacious errors constituting at each level about a third of all errors. The proportions of the different types of errors change according to task and level. The errors concerning tenses predominate in the translation tests, those concerning conjugations in the diagnostic test. As for pronouns, they cause 40 % of all errors in the diagnostic test (fill-in/transformation tests), 7 %-8 % in the translation tests. This reduction is partly due to the fact that many pronouns are necessarily regarded as part of the construction of a verb and classed as such. Put together, the errors concerning gender, orthography and vocabulary constitute 40 % at the advanced levels.

The study includes a correlational analysis aiming at confirming or confuting some hypotheses regarding the interrelation, on the one hand between the results of the different parts of the two tests given during the first term of the university studies (vocabulary, grammar, metalingual knowledge), on the other hand beween the results and some external factors such as marks in French (secondary school), stay in French-speaking country, length of previous studies of French, etc. Among other things, it is shown that the students’ results in grammar are systematically better than those in vocabulary and that six years of previous studies of French do not generally lead to better results than three years’ studies.

"Hvad er sannhet?": Studier i Cora Sandels novellistik2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the short fiction of the Norwegian writer Cora Sandel (pseudonym for Sara Fabricius, 1880-1974), primarily the short story collections En blå sofa (A blue sofa, 1927), Carmen og Maja (Carmen and Maja, 1932), Mange takk doktor (Thank you, doctor, 1935), Dyr jeg har kjent (Animals I have known, 1945) and Figurer på mørk bunn (Figures against a dark background, 1949).

The first chapter gives an introduction to the short story genre and some of its theories. A survey of the reception of Sandel’s short stories in Norway and Sweden is also presented. This is followed by a discussion of realist and modernist traits in Sandel’s short fiction. Sandel’s exile and its meaning for her writing is also examined, as well as the complex of gender, power, and language in her stories. The use of gender theory in the readings is also discussed.

The two following chapters consist of readings of the short stories. They show how Sandel represents women in her stories as powerless, but also as connected with a hidden, not verbalized truth. This is also visible in the stories’ technique, where Sandel pays special attention to the narrative act. In the animal stories from 1945, it is shown how Sandel elaborates the same themes and techniques, and also problematizes biographical truth. Sandel’s representation of women and the Second World War, which is the theme of her last short story collection, is also examined.

The conclusion is that Sandel was an innovator of the short story in Scandinavia. Her acute awareness of the form as well as the content of the text resulted in short stories where power-related and gendered truth is examined and problematized.
