To knock Death out of the Game. An analysis of Tomas Tranströmer’s poem “Medieval motif ” (Att sätta döden ur spel. En analys av Tomas Tranströmers dikt “Medeltida motiv”)

The Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer’s (1931–2015) poem “Medieval Motif ”, from For Living and Dead (1989), takes its visual point of departure in the motif “Man who plays chess with Death about his life”. A motif also found in medieval visual arts (Albertus Pictor, 1440–1509) and in modern film art (Ingmar Bergman, 1918–2007). In both Pictors painting, ”The Game of Chess with Death” (around 1480), and Bergman’s film The Seventh Seal (1957), Death knocks man out of the game by checkmate. In Tranströmer’s poem, however, things turn out somewhat differently. In “Medieval Motif ” there is unique word in Swedish poetry, “frisörsaxklippande” (“barber-scissor-like clipping”), as a determination for a sound. The analysis of the poem tries to answer a number of questions: What is this sound exactly? Why does the sound occur in a poem about a motif from the Middle Ages? What function does the sound have for the poem as an artistic whole? The “Medieval motif ”, which besides the title consists of two Sapphic stanzas, is the subject of an in-depth motif analysis and of a composition analysis. In summary, the analysis shows that the “Medieval motif ” forms an epiphany where the motif of Vanitas contributes to the understanding of the moment of togetherness as time and space cease to exist, and a previously hidden truth is revealed. As a part of that truth, Death is knocked out of the game.

    Abstract [en]

From the Stork to Sperm Banks. Sex Education Books for Children 1965–2014 (Från stork till spermabank. Sexualupplysningslitteratur för barn 1965–2014)

The aim of this article is to analyze depictions of gender and sexuality in sex education books for young children published in Sweden between 1965 and 2014. After describing the general trends in the publication of sex education literature during the period, the article discusses the narrative address and family structures, gendered descriptions of reproduction, and the introduction of assisted reproductive technologies and non-heterosexual parenting in the studied material.

The majority of the sex education books portray white, two-parent families and focus on heterosexual reproduction. Men and sperm are normally described as more active and important during conception, and the reproductive process is often depicted from the sperm’s point of view. At the same time, there are books throughout the period that problematize gender stereotypes in reproduction and, from the late 1990s, heteronormative sexuality.

This article also shows that verbal and visual descriptions of sexual intercourse were more explicit in sex education books from the 1970s, while books from the early 21th century depict a greater variety of families and assisted reproductive technologies. After the 1970s, sex education literature for all ages disappears and the books are more clearly adapted for different age groups.

    Abstract [en]

Marika Andræ, Pappas flicka? Fäder och döttrar i ungdomslitteratur från 2000-talet. (Daddy’s Girl? Fathers and Daughters in Young Adult Literature from the 21st Century.)

How are relations between fathers and their teenage daughters depicted in early twentiethcentury young adult literature? The new research area of fatherhood, sociology of families and research concerning ethnic conflicts within the family is used as a background to the textual analysis of six novels where fathers and daughters are figured. Some modern manuals, directed separate to fathers and daughters, are used to reflect the ideal image of the relation between a father and a teenage daughter. The central notions in these advisory books are: to be a model, responsibility, communication, honesty, respect, confirmation and intimacy. These notions are used in the analysis. The fathers pictured in the novels are mostly ambivalent in their position as an adult and oftenly hand over the responsibility for the relationship to the daughters. The stories about ethnic conflicts picture fathers with strict authority. To handle this, the daughters either have to adjust to the existing power paradigm by guarding their behaviour, or use several strategies to avoid conflicts, or break up from their families. But the girls wish, nonetheless, for exactly the same relationship to their fathers as the daughters in the other novels. The girls want physical and mental intimacy, they want to be acknowledged as individuals and they long for a steady father figure who shares his daugther’s concerns. But they all seem to excuse the fathers for their inability to fulfill this. Instead they turn to a new relationship with a friend or a boyfriend. When the fathers do show some stumbling effort to develop a new kind of contact, the daughters willingly welcome the attempt with a great deal of benevolence. A comparison is also made with Vivi Edström’s study of the father and daughter theme in Swedish young adult novels from the 1970’s and 1980’s. There are resemblances between the older and the younger literature with regard to gender patterns: the daughter is described as a mature care-taker and the father as a little child.

    Abstract [en]

David Anthin, Bohuslän as a Literary Meeting Place: The Transformation of a Physical Landscape into a Literary One in Evert Taube's "Inbjudan till Bohuslän".

The essay discusses Evert Taube's poem "Inbjudan till Bohuslän" ("Invitation to Bohuslän") from the collection Ballader i Bohuslän (Ballads from Bohuslän) of 1943. My purpose is to place the poem in a specific tradition by way of a thematic analysis, while biographical aspects are also considered where relevant. "Inbjudan till Bohuslän" is read as a metapoetical treatise, in which a dialogue with broad poetic traditions is established. Taube proposes to give the province of Bohuslän on the Swedish west coast a new literary guise. Male Viking-heroism gives way to a feminine and maternal ideal. At the same time a childhood landscape is newly presented to Rönnerdahl as poet, according to the literary ideals he—as the invited guest—himself harbours and champions.

First and foremost, I argue that the poem's dialogue is characterized by an affnity with literary traditions. Further, Taube's own, biographically verifiable experiences are shown to underlie the text, although they have successively been toned down or symbolically reshaped during the many drafts of the poem.

Taube stresses the idyllic aspects of Bohuslän. He showcases a cultivated and sheltered landscape in a way similar to the previous, 1890s generation of Swedish authors: Selma Lagerlöf, Verner von Heidenstam, and Erik Axel Karlfeldt. Thus Taube also turns his back on a dominant aesthetic of the Swedish 1880s, with its emphasis on a harsh and deterministic coastal environment. At length this Taubian critique of the 1880s transforms into a criticism also of Modernism.

Taube further conducts a dialogue with the pastoral poetry of antiquity. The essay proposes that the poet is influenced by a pastoral mode in "Inbjudan till Bohuslän". Paul Alpers' research into the nature of pastoral provides the prime structure for this section. Alpers reasons that the pastoral speaker lacks the strength to control the conditions of his or her world, and only governs in the realm of song. The pastoral process (as originally identified by William Empson) also reflects a movement from the complex to the simple, and Alpers shows how this works in Wordsworth's poem "The Solitary Reaper" (1807). Here the Romantic poet hears a rustic girl's working ditty and wishes to experience a pastoral transformation. In "Inbjudan till Bohuslän" the poet's urge to Rönnerdahl is much the same, as Wordsworth's singing girl has a sister also in the landscape of Bohuslän. Her name is Karin Johansson, and she is meant to give voice to Rönnerdahl's ballads.

"Inbjudan till Bohuslän" also recalls Horace and his prizing of seclusion. A study of several drafts of the poem (in the Evert Taube archives, Gothenburg University Library) shows that this classic influence is successively muted. On a deeper thematic and modal level, however, a proximity to Horace remains striking.

With Mikhail Bakhtin one may further conclude that an idyllic chronotope pervades Taube's poem. A cyclic chronology is hailed in the landscape of peaceful dales among rocky hills and cliffs. By the same token there is no evidence of a sentimental yearning for a lost landscape—the one evoked is constantly at hand, and also available for the future. The idyll in "Inbjudan till Bohuslän" can therefore be described as progressive.

The poem has a darker streak in a theme of mortality. The poet, however, finds solace in a dialogue with Shakespeare and Horace, who give promises of eternal life for poetry: Ars longa, vita brevis.

    Abstract [en]

Mattias Aronsson, ”Ja, denna stig är stigarnas stig”. Taoistiska influenser i Vilhelm Ekelunds verk (“Yes, this path is the path of paths”. Taoist influence in the works of Vilhelm Ekelund)

In this article I show how Taoist philosophy has influenced the Swedish poet, essayist and aphorist Vilhelm Ekelund. I note that the author mentions the Taoist philosophers Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu and discusses their ideas on a couple of occasions in his later works (Atticism – Humanism, 1943; Plus salis–, 1945). Examples of such explicit influence can also be found in Ekelund’s private notebooks, posthumously published in two volumes: Hemkomst och flykt (1972) and Ur en scholaris’ verkstad (1974). I argue that Taoist philosophy implicitly influenced the Swedish author as early as the second part of the 1910’s – when he started to emphasize such principles as moderation, composure, dispassion and non-desire in his writing. I also discuss other important ideals which Ekelund shared with the Taoist philosophers, such as poverty, humility, simplicity and dishonour. Finally, I see a parallel in the anti-intellectual aspects of Taoist thinking and Ekelund’s use of the term misologi (misology), a word which often has positive connotations in his works. In Ekelund’s prose, as well as in the famous Taoist text Tao Te Ching, excessive intellectualism is frequently criticized.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish poet, essayist and aphorist Vilhelm Ekelund was not only influenced by German literature and philosophy, he also wrote extensive literary criticism on the subject of Romance language authors. This article discusses Ekelund’s relationship to some of the most influential French and Italian writers — as it can be seen in his work during the period 1909–1919. This relationship was ambiguous: he paid homage to French authors such as Montaigne, Montesquieu, Stendhal and Comte — as well as to the Italian poet and philosopher Leopardi – but he also severely criticized such distinguished writers as Baudelaire, Rousseau and Maupassant. One conclusion of this article is that the authors praised by Ekelund all venerate the Greek and Roman cultural heritage, whereas the despised novelists and poets were, in his opinion, either too “modern” or too “feminine” — both highly pejorative adjectives in the author’s terminology. It is also noted that Ekelund’s most ferocious attacks date from the first part of the decade, before he entered a more harmonic period with the works Metron (1918) and Attiskt i fågelperspektiv (1919).

    Abstract [en]

Money and myths: An exploration of models of value in early 19th-century literature and texts on economy (Myt och metall. Värdemodeller i litteratur och ekonomisk prosa under tidigt 1800-tal)

The main aim of this paper is to show how the concept of money could be treated in literary and in economic writings in the Swedish Age of Romanticism. Three texts — an early poem by Erik Johan Stagnelius and two contemporary essays in economic theory — serve as examples of how, and for which purpose, qualitative and quantitative values could be negotiated in these writings. The study shows that, in the poem, money and profit are treated as inconsistent with such qualitative values as freedom, justice, and joy, whereas the two theoretical essays both make use of different strategies of fictionalization to deal with qualitative and quantitative values in one and the same narration. In this paper, the fictionalization strategies are linked to the para-capitalist approach often to be found in the political and economic theories in the Romantic period. From the perspective of economy-discourse history, an attempt is made to link the two essays to the German economist and philosopher Adam Müller and his Versuche einer neuen Theorie des Geldes (1816).

What is Hidden in Västerbotten’s Stomach. On Augustine and Torgny Lindgren’s Minnen

(Vad döljer sig i Västerbottens mage? Om Augustinus och Torgny Lindgrens Minnen)

The article examines the intertextual relation between Torgny Lindgren’s Minnen (2010) and Augustine’s Confessions, from which Lindgren has taken the motto for his memoir. By using the patristic intertext as a starting point, the investigation aims to show how Lindgren has constructed the image of Västerbotten, his home district. The opening part of the article (1)establishes the hermeneutic principles of the study. The second part (2.1–2.4) charts parallels between text and intertext in their portrayal of grace, evil, and man. It emerges that those elements of Lindgren’s worldview which are particularly closely related to Augustinian theology are also the ones that possess a strong Västerbottenian character. The third part of the article (3.1–3.2.3) demonstrates that most of the differences between Minnen and Confessions can be linked to the cultural memory of modernity, which documents the rise and fall of industrial subjectivity. In the fourth part (4.1–4.3), it is argued that Lindgren’s memoir attempts to counteract the crisis of industrial cultural memory by reviving the Augustinian forms of memoria. Within his image of Västerbotten, Lindgren finds adequate metaphorical models for use in his compensatory project of counter-memory. In the concluding part of the article (5) it is observed that, just as Lindgren’s dialogue with Augustine recapitulates the history of Western memory, the memoir’s Västerbotten is elevated to the status of a universal symbol of European consciousness and its fate.
