Den "farliga" muslimen: En diskursanalytisk undersökning om Sverigedemokraternas föreställningsvärld2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the Swedish Democrats relationship to an islamophobic worldview. The party developed from the racist party Bevara Sverige Svenskt (Keep Sweden Swedish) and is today the third largest party in Sweden, which gives them a powerful position in the society. It is therefore important to investigate their view on minorities, and in this case Muslims. In this thesis I examine the Swedish Democrat’s material during the election campaign the years of 2006, 2010 and 2014 using Ernesto Laclau’s and Chantal Mouffe’s discourse theory. This theory makes it possible to examine implicit and explicit relationships an islamophobic worldview and provides the tools to relate it to a greater context. The research questions of this thesis are how the Swedish Democrats fixate the meaning of the words Muslim, Swedish and culture, as well as how the election material differs between the years. The conclusions suggests that the Swedish Democrats produce a islamophobic worldview by picturing Muslims as a monolithic mass and articulate an antagonism between West and East, we and the Other. The islamophobic worldview produced by the Swedish Democrats is not only a Swedish phenomenon but also a part of a Western islamophobia industry, which is common to Radical Right-wing parties in Europe.

Falun Gong i religionshistorisk kontext2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Qigong was initiated by the Chinese government in the 1950´s as a domestic medical tradition to be included within a modern scientific framework. During the first decades it became popular among the élite. During the 70´s and 80´s scientific confirmation of the existence of qi contributed to its immense popularity among the population. Charismatic leaders with a traditional background were leading their groups in parks and the movement was booming. In 1992 Falun Gong was established by Li Hongzhi as qigong taken to a higher level. Its popularity increased and Li was associated with buddha as well as the daoist messiah Li Hong. After manifestations and demonstrations Falun Gong was banned in China as a religious sect, potentially threatening to society. This reaction of the Chinese government as well as the popularity of the movement can be understood within its context of Chinese history of religion as a particular strand of traditional religion and folk sectarianism, often referred to as White Lotus, influenced by ancient Chinese traditions and Daoism as well as Buddhism and Manichaeism.

The Eucharist as Orikonso: A Study in Eucharistic Ecclesiology from an Igbo Perspective2008Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Since the coming of the Spiritan missionaries to Onitsha in December 1885, the Catholic Church in Igboland has grown and expanded. All the parishes in the 14 dioceses are alive and growing. There has been steady growth in vocations to the priesthood and the religious life. Scores of priests are ordained and greater numbers of male and female religious make their vows yearly, and these include monks and nuns. The number of priests and religious of Igbo origin who are serving as missionaries in many parts of the world is on the increase. But this vibrant Local Church is facing a big challenge. There are serious cases of double allegiance - of members who are not fully committed to the Christian faith and practice but who, in times of crisis, resort to the practices in the pre-Christian Igbo Indigenous Religion, better known as Omenala Ndigbo. I see this as an important challnge that faces the Church in Igboland. This problem can be seen from many perspectives. As an Igbo man, a Catholic, a priest and a student of theology, I chose to study the problem from its anthropological and historical perspective in service of a theological analysis and understanding for pastoral application. I undertook a detailed research in Igboland and the result serves as the intrumentum laboris for this work. Ndigbo (Igbo people) understand themselves as a covenant people. This explains why the community is of utmost importance. Any act of sin is taken very seriously since it is believed to destroy the covenant community called Umunna. And whenever there is a sin - a break in the covenant bond - an atonement sacrifice is offered. And this believed to re-enact the community. Chief among the sacrifices is the Oriko. In this work, which uses the hermeneutical and analytical method, known as inculturation, the Eucharist is studied from the Igbo perspective - with a view to take the place of the Oriko and become Orikonso - since the Eucharist "makes the Church" and is the "source and summit" of the life of the Church.

Muhammed Ibn Abd al-Wahhab och de islamska feministerna: Ett möte om kvinnans roll i äktenskapet2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The religious school of thought that is involved in the control of Saudi Arabia is called Wahhabism and is a form of Islam that is usually accused by outsiders of being misogynist. This paper will deal with the founder of this alignment of Islam, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, and his view of women in marriage. Another movement which in turn goes to work to lift the women's rights is Islamic feminists. Two branches of Islam who belief that Islam is the only right path to take for issues surrounding gender and life. In this essay, I will compare their respective interpretations of three points which concern the role of women in marriage; men's right to polygamy, men's higher status than the woman and the men's right to beat his wife. The purpose of this paper is to ask two different interpretations of the same issues, with the same verses in the Quran against each other to see how they resemble or differ from each other to try to contribute for a greater understanding of the interpretative pluralism in Islam. The paper concludes that these two movements are looking at the three points with different eyes and in different ways as they are originated from two different contexts and have different purposes when their interpreting the verses from the Quran.

Hiding in plain sight: A descriptive content analysis of the Muslim Brotherhood politicizing Islam 2005-20112019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis highlights the ways in which the Muslim brotherhood politicizes Islam, depicted in the group’s official documents. The study theorizes a social-constructivist approach to politicized religion and argues the concept as an effort to manipulate an understanding of religion with political intentions. Through a descriptive content analysis, this thesis analyzes three official political documents from the Muslim brotherhood’s English website, ‘Ikhwanweb’. The analysis identifies the religious ideology of the group as all-encompassing Islamic, as well as concludes the Muslim brotherhood as utilizing politicized religion extensively in the chosen material.

Muslimer i media: En innehållsanalys av DN Debatts framställning av muslimer ett år före och ett år efter 9/11 2001.2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine whether or not there has been a change in the way DN Debatt has been depicting muslims. This study process the time between 11 September 2000 and 11 September 2002. To reach my result I am using a content analysis, this because I found it the most useful to my material. The result I got with this thesis was that it wasn’t that big of a difference in the picture that the writers wanted to show. The biggest difference was the linguistic, the words used in the articles changed from quite positive to become rather negative. For example before 11 September 2001 the word terrorism was not to be seen in a article about Muslims, but after the same date every article used in this study has the word terrorist in some way. In my thesis I used a hypothesis, the hypothesis was that the reporting about Muslims was going to be radically changed and become hostile towards Muslims. This was not the case and my hypothesis was in one way contradicted.

Klerikal fascism: En deskriptiv innehållsanalys av Sveriges Religiösa Reformförbund, 1929-19502017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine how Christianity and fascism can be concatenated. The thesis has been conducted as a descriptive content analysis of the Swedish Association of Religious Reform (Sveriges Religiösa Reformförbund), established in 1929. In order to identify the Association’s socio-theological project and agenda, a Foucauldian inspired social constructionism theory has been applied. This thesis argues that by relying on a mission to ‘complete’ the Lutheran Reformation, which considered religion and culture alike, the Association’s struggle for a religious ‘rebirth’ also referred to the rebirth of Swedish culture and society. This assumption was correlated with contemporary conceptions of ‘race’ and Jews, culminating into the perception of Jesus as a masculine Aryan ideal.

    Abstract [en]

The synchronized terror attacks on July 22, 2011 was the worst politically motivated assault in post-WW2 Norway. To the perpetrator, Anders Behring Breivik, 22/7 was a marketing operation, designed to draw attention to his compendium, 2083: A European Declaration of Independence. While Breivik acted alone, his political philosophy is far from unique. Through a detailed analysis of the compendium's content, identifying the original authors whose texts Breivik used but did not always acknowledge, this essay discusses the political traditions that informed the assailant's worldview: Islamophobia (anti-Muslim racism), cultural conservative nationalism, antifeminism, and selected elements of White Power thought, far Right evangelical theology, and the Knights Templar tradition, all permeated by romantic male warrior ideals. The stunning violence of July 22 was a hyper-masculine performative act aimed at producing a heroic avant-garde of nationalist warriors who will rise to purge Europe from the corrupting influence of its internal enemies and defeat its external enemies. Through the cleansing fire of the civil war, he believes that a reborn Europe will arise to reclaim its ordained position of glory as the world's leading civilization. In the final analysis, Breivik's political philosophy may thus be recognized as a 21st-century articulation of the fascist legacy.

    Abstract [en]

How are we to grasp the transformation of law, authority, and border that is taking place through the current War on Terror? How are we to understand the return of public torture as a judicially sanctioned practice, presented as a just and necessary instrument to defend good society? What is the significance of Guantánamo for the future of global order? The article presents an analysis of the use of torture in the eternal War on Terror from the perspective of globalization theory, inspired in part by Agamben, Carl Schmitt, and a rereading of Foucault.
