    This Article examines the potential stakeholder-related obstacles hindering the implementation of mechanisms to re-ignite the development of novel antibiotics. Proposed economic models and incentives to drive such development include: Public Funding of Research and Development (R&D), Tax Incentives, Milestone Prizes, End Payments, Intellectual Property (IP) and Exclusivity Extensions, Pricing and Reimbursement Incentives, Product Development Partnerships (PDPs), and the Options Market for Antibiotics model. Drawing on personal experience and understanding of the antibiotic field, as well as stakeholder consultation and numerous expert meetings within the DRIVE-AB project and Uppsala Health Summit 2015, the Authors identify obstacles attributable to the following actors: Universities and Research Institutes, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), Large Pharmaceutical Companies, Marketing Approval Regulators, Payors, Healthcare Providers, National Healthcare Authorities, Patients, and Supranational Institutions. The analysis also proposes a characterization and ranking of the difficulty associated with implementing the reviewed mechanisms. Public Funding of R&D, Pricing and Reimbursement Incentives, and PDPs are mechanisms expected to meet highly systemic barriers (i.e., obstacles across the entire antibiotic value chain), imposing greater implementation challenges in that they require convincing and involving several motivationally diverse actors in order to have much effect.

    While research on reshoring generally focuses on the host-country to explain why a company brings its previously offshored activities back home, this paper stresses the relevance also of the home-country context. Specifically, relying on the IMP (Industrial Marketing & Purchasing) perspective we show how offshoring and reshoring processes and decisions are both enabled and constrained by the micro-interactions and inter-dependencies in the industrial networks stretching over the home-country and the host-country. This work relies on a longitudinal case study about an Italian manufacturing firm to develop a model indicating how offshoring/reshoring is a long-term process which unfolds depending both on the focal firm's strategy and on its interplay with the embedding network. Next to this interactive process perspective, we contribute to the literature on reshoring and the global factory also the concept of "selective reshoring", whereby companies bring back a very specific sub-set of activities, which were previously fine-sliced and offshored, and re-embed these activities in their local home context. The more flexible and selective nature of this relocation of activities between different supply markets depends both on the firm's strategy and on the structure, overlap and evolution of the network elements located in the home- and host-country contexts.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore two specific areas pertaining to industrial networks and international business (IB). First, the authors look at how business relationships influence the internationalization in time, from the establishment of the first subsidiary in a foreign market to the following ones, and in space, that is, across different markets. Second, the authors investigate how an increasing external network dependence of subsidiaries in their internationalization may cause a detachment of a subsidiary from the mother company as its knowledge becomes insufficient to guide a subsidiary's internationalization.

    Design/methodology/approach: This paper utilizes an exploratory, longitudinal, single-case study of Loccioni - a manufacturer of measuring and automatic control systems for industrial customers - to illustrate the specific dynamics of the influences of industrial networks on the internationalization of subsidiaries.

    Findings: The case study helps to elucidate the roles, entailing also free will and own initiative, of small suppliers' subsidiaries which operate inside several global factories, and how surfing on many different global factories, by means of several local subsidiaries, actually supports these suppliers' own international developments. This notion adds to our understanding of the global factory phenomenon a supplier focus that stresses how the role of suppliers is not merely that of being passive recipients of activities and directions from a focal orchestrating firm, but can also be that of initiative-takers themselves.

    Originality/value: The paper contributes to the IMP tradition by providing a multi-layered and geographically more fine-grained view of the network embedding companies that operate on internationalized markets. This paper thereby sheds light on a less investigated area of research within the IMP tradition: the link between internationalization in different countries and the interconnectedness between the industrial networks spanning these countries. At the same time, this paper contributes to IB theories by showing how a late-internationalizing SME can enter highly international markets by plugging into several established Global Factories as a way to exploit further opportunities for international expansion.

    Relying on an embedded case study over two interaction-stimulating tools of Uppsala University (AIMday and SMURF), this paper addresses four research questions concerning (1) the types of university-industry interactions, (2) the way this university crafts such interactions, (3) the perceptions and assessments made of these interactions by the various involved actors, as well as (4) the differences in such perceptions and assessments. As for the first question, we formulate a typology of university-industry interactions including “participation”, “cooperation”, “collaboration” and “relationship”. As for the second question, the paper develops a process model connecting these four types of interactions and revealing the importance of a fifth type of “potential” interactions between researchers and companies, namely “contacts”. As for the third and forth question, we identify both convergence and divergence in the perceptions and assessment of university-industry interactions made by the three involved parties – researchers, companies and university management: there is convergence in researchers’ and companies’ appreciation of contacts, cooperation and collaborations, on the one hand, and the key performance indicators applied by university management to measure such interactions, on the other hand; but a divergence appears in the relative lack of indicators measuring relationships in exhaustive ways, despite the great value that both researchers and companies attribute to them.

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate the connection between network evolution and technology embedding. To this end, we performed an exploratory case study of the network surrounding an eco-sustainable technology, Leaf House, Italy's first zero-carbon emission house. We apply theories on technological development within industrial networks, with a specific focus on their resource layer and on the three settings involved in embedding an innovation: “developing”, “producing”, and “using”. Our results contribute to these theories by developing four propositions on the connections between network evolution and embedding: first, technology embedding entails both downstream network expansion and upstream restrictions. Secondly, conflicts among actors increase as technology embedding approaches the producing and using settings. Third and fourth, the more the shapes a technology can assume, and the more each of these shapes involves actors acting in different settings, the easier it is to embed it. The paper concludes with managerial implications and suggestions for further research.

    The focus of this article is on discussing the foundations, conceptual development, and implications of resource interaction in inter-organizational networks. The article conceptualizes and classifies resources before discussing how resource interfaces enable to utilize, manage, and change resources. In doing so it provides a set of basic principles as to how resources interact at a network level, or how firms combine, develop, mobilize, and manage resources over time. This is in strong contrast to a focus on the acquisition, accumulation, and exchange of resources by the firm. The article further provides a comparison with two other research streams, the Resource-Based view (RBV) and the Service-Dominant logic (S-D logic), in order to better position this perspective on inter-organizational resource interaction. It concludes by discussing an agenda for further research.

    Relying on an in-depth case study of the incubator related to the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institute's (KI), this paper identifies new analytical and strategic dimensions of incubation. Departing from the current literature's prevalent focus on incubators as organizations performing a predefined set of activities for incubatees (facility renting, coaching, training and connecting), we perform a multilevel analysis embracing, next to the organizational and the project-specific levels, also the broader institutional and inter-organizational level. Our analysis relies on seven key components of incubation, namely its time, place, sources, resources, control/governance, activities/services and outcomes. Further, we view incubators as strategic actors engaged in value creation on a broader arena than the strict incubation context, even an international arena, where incubators' choices and interactions can be analyzed with the help of concepts from various streams in the business strategy literature. The specific strategic drivers of business incubation that we identify in the KI incubator's case are six: positioning in the value chain, risk taking/time perspective, revenue model, governance/control, internationalization, and cooperation/competition. The paper concludes with managerial implications urging incubators to take more of a strategic perspective rather than focussing only on the established components of their operations.

    This article introduces Industrial Marketing Management's special issue on start-ups and networks. To begin with, we stress the relevance of understanding the context wherein entrepreneurship unfolds – a context filled with social, technical and economic connections to which the start-up needs to relate. We also present and confront three network perspectives which bring different insights to the interplay between start-ups and networks: Social Network (SN) theory, the Industrial Marketing & Purchasing (IMP) view, and Actor-Network Theory (ANT). Next, we introduce the 12 papers of this special issue and place them on a continuum covering a start-up's process of network embedding and including the three periods of establishment, consolidation and stabilization. We conclude with a research agenda suggesting five avenues for further research: (1) tracing start-ups' process of network embedding, (2) mapping the connections between the different networks affecting a start-up, (3) grasping the negative effects of networks on start-ups, (4) making longitudinal case studies on start-ups and networks more comparable via common analytical tools, and (5) investigating how policy influences the complex interplay between start-ups and networks.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate how science is transformed into business by means of commercialization projects, and especially the interfaces these projects create with the surrounding network. We also aim specifically at identifying which different types of interfaces can be pivotal from project to project. Our methodology relies on four comparative case studies, centered each on a specific project selected from the commercialization efforts of Karolinska Institute (Sweden). Our findings stress that, except in one case, interfaces with users/potential buyers do not play a major role in setting the commercial direction (target markets) of these projects. Instead, in the absence of a strong interface to users, the most decisive interface for setting the commercial direction is the one with financiers, which further binds all projects to Karolinska’s innovation-supporting system. Moreover, we find that the interface with the project team is never pivotal for the four analyzed project, as the human resources directly employed in the project are kept to a minimum in all of Karolinska Institute’s commercialization projects. This makes commercialization projects extremely dependent on external resources and largely unable to control their long-term development.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper is to analyse howdifferent types of control are applied in different mechanisms for commercialisingscience, according to the inter-organisational interactions involved. To achievethis purpose, we followed a multiple-case study design and selected four casesfrom Uppsala University and the Karolinska Institutet that provided variationin the commercialisation mechanisms (PET Centre, Ångström Materials Academy,Actar, and Karolinska Development). We find that action and resultcontrols dominate in linear ‘spin-out’ funnel mechanisms, while interactive mechanismsentail a combination of action, result and personalcontrols. However, the inter-organisational interactions also impact whichcontrols are applied in a commercialisation mechanism: conflicting goals between a few closely related organisations or limited external interactions are associated with result controls, whileaction controls dominate in the absence of external interactions if timeand efficiency are key goals. Result controls also assume very different roles, depending on the inter-organisational context of a specific commercialisation mechanism.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper analyses four episodes of commercialization of science taken from the innovation practices of two major Swedish universities, Karolinska Institutet and Uppsala University. The four mini-cases (PET center, Ångström Materials Academy, Actar AB, and Karolinska Development) were selected to provide variation in the commercialization mechanisms and goals. Our purpose is to relate the patterns of control and governance in each episode with its goal and commercialization mechanism. In doing this we also discuss the impact that the number and typology of actors involved, as well as their relationships, have on how control is exerted in each commercialization episode.

    Purpose - The purpose of the article is to identify and analyze the challenges of B2B research relevance from the point of view of top executives.

    Design/methodology/approach - Ten in-depth interviews with top executives from different B2B industries were conducted and analyzed by using Arndt’s (1985) elements of a healthy discipline, i.e. Knowledge, Problems, and Instruments.

    Findings - The findings reveal 12 challenges that characterize contemporary B2B research relevance from a top executive perspective.

    Research limitations/implications - The research offers genuine top executive insight. More research from different perspectives is needed to broaden the understanding of B2B research relevance.

    Originality/value - Reflecting B2B research with the identified challenges can contribute to better research designs, narrowing the gap between B2B scholars and practitioners. Altogether, it contributes to the health of the B2B discipline. The study also introduces a new approach to analysing research relevance by using the elements of scientific balance.

    While most research on university-industry interactions focuses on established collaborations, this paper focuses on those interactions that occur before the emergence of a concrete relationship. Uppsala University, Sweden, applies this 'proactive' approach, based on creating universityindustry cooperation platforms before, or irrespectively of, the creation of commercializable knowledge. This study aims to analyze the structure, processes and effects of proactive approaches to utilize academic research commercially. It focuses on a conference, Academy Industry Meeting day (AIMday) and addresses three main questions: first, how does this mechanism work? Second, why do different actors, such as researchers, small and large companies, participate? Third, what values and concrete effects do they obtain from it? Our case study reflects the perspectives of industry, academia and the administrative units organizing the event. We find that some reasons to participate and values are important to all participants, but that there are also considerable differences.

    The World Health Organization (WHO) has published a global priority list of antibiotic-resistant bacteria to guide research and development (R&D) of new antibiotics. Every pathogen on this list requires R&D activity, but some are more attractive for private sector investments, as evidenced by the current antibacterial pipeline. A pipeline coordinator is a governmental/non-profit organization that closely tracks the antibacterial pipeline and actively supports R&D across all priority pathogens employing new financing tools.

    This chapter relies on a case study featuring the business network around Stella, an Italian home textile manufacturer, to illustrate the challenging issue of engaging other firms into complex “Network Process Re-engineering” (NPR) projects. While the strict technological dimension of selecting, developing, and implementing ICT solutions is certainly very important and poses several challenges to this type of projects, this chapter focuses on other types of challenges, namely those pertaining to the nature and quality of relationships between the actors taking part in a NPR project. We stress the importance of the connection between the specific inter-organizational activities that need to be redesigned and coordinated in better ways, on the one hand, and the bonds existing among the actors, on the other hand. We suggest that very advanced and complex coordination tasks, entailing sensitive communication patterns, can be tackled only if supported by strong, integrative relationships characterized by high trust and commitment between the involved parties. We conclude by discussing how the pivotal firms or the “strategic centers” of a network can support and facilitate complex change projects like NPR by carefully combining different strategies, whereby they both exert coercive power and make concessions to their counterparts in the network.

    Since most of the literature on outsourcing focuses only to the buying (outsourcing) company, this paper aims to highlight the supplier's side from a relational perspective. The paper stresses the importance of business relationships between suppliers of outsourced activities and their customers. The paper's purpose is specified in two research questions: (1) how is value created within outsourcing and (2) how does the supplier interact with the outsourcing company? Our method relies on an in-depth qualitative case study of Logoplaste, a Portuguese packaging company which supplies large consumer goods manufacturers through complex outsourcing activities. Our analysis identifies three key dimensions of outsourcing relationships: (1) value co-creation via inter-firm coordination (as opposed to unilateral externalization of activities); (2) mutual dependence between supplier and customer due to the supplier's taking over activities; and (3) the blurring of organizational boundaries because of mutual dependence. These dimensions manifest themselves, even though in different degrees, after the initiation of any outsourcing relationship: these variables are new to the literature on outsourcing, which focuses on the ex ante dimensions that influence the customer's pre-relational choices such as "make or buy" and relationship type.     This study aims to develop a more dynamic and relational view of centers of excellence (CoE) within multinational enterprises (MNEs), that is, business units with specific and highly valuable competencies and knowledge, which are transferred and leveraged by other units of the MNE. We employ a longitudinal case study to analyze how, between 1986 and 2014, an external supplier progressively became a CoE within IKEA and even improved this role, thereby becoming increasingly important for the MNE. Particularly, we develop a model linking internal (resources, competencies, and structure) and external factors (exchange volumes, interorganizational routines, mutual dependence, trust and commitment, and identities) with changed network positions, which, in turn, define the intensity and importance of a CoE's role. Thus, the elements required to establish a CoE may not originate from the MNE's core competencies, but may be extracted, recombined, and integrated externally from the MNE's global supply network.

    Since the mid 1990s the OECD, the EU and many national innovation policies have pointed to universities as the most important direct providers of solutions to use as sources of innovations for growth and societal welfare. Also, through their respective governments, universities are exposed to rather detailed requirements on how to fulfil the increased direct utilisation of research results. This paper takes a closer look at how two internationally recognised universities from the same country, namely Sweden, addressed the innovation commission. A case study investigates how the Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University interpreted and implemented the Swedish government’s commission on an increased utilisation of publicly funded research for innovation. The main finding is that both universities’ ways of fulfilling this commission are more directed towards ‘betting’ on potential innovations than on ‘muddling through’ the context of innovation.

    Smart grids play a key role in realizing climate ambitions. Boosting consumption flexibility is an essential measure in bringing the potential gains of smart grids to fruition. The collective scientific understanding of demand response programs argues that time-of-use tariffs have proven its merits. The findings upon which this conclusion rests are, however, primarily derived from studies covering energy-based time-of-use rates over fairly short periods of time. Hence, this empirical study set out with the intention of estimating the extent of response to a demand-based time-of-use electricity distribution tariff among Swedish single-family homes in the long term. The results show that six years after the implementation households still respond to the price signals of the tariff by cutting demand in peak hours and shifting electricity consumption from peak to off-peak hours. Studies conducted in the Nordic countries commonly include only homeowners and so another aim of the study was to explore the potential of demand response programs among households living in apartment buildings. The demand-based tariff proved to bring about similar, but not as marked, effects in rental apartments, whereas there are virtually no corresponding evidences of demand response in condominium apartments.

    De estimerade effekterna av en tidsdifferentierad och effektbaserad elnätstariff, i form av förändrade elkonsumtionsmönster, är förhållandevis marginella och begränsade till hushåll som bor i villa. Resultaten tyder på att villaägarna i Sollentuna, som ett led i sin anpassning av elanvändningen till effekttariffen, har minskat sin elanvändning under höglasttid med 2,3 och 1,2 procent under sommar- respektive vintermånaderna i jämförelse med referensgruppen i Saltsjö-Boo. Det finns inget som tyder på en liknande effekt bland bostadsrätter och motsvarande analyser avseende hyresrätter har inte varit möjliga med anledning av att referensgruppen i det här fallet inte var representativ.

    Resultaten indikerar vidare att effekttariffer tydligt påverkar hushålls attityder och intentioner att flytta elanvändning från hög- till låglasttid, men att dessa inte återspeglas i deras faktiska beteende. Det finns således endast ett svagt samband mellan förekomsten av effekttariff och andelen el som förbrukas under hög- respektive låglasttid bland de hushåll som omfattades av studien. De psykologiska faktorer som har störst betydelse för om, och i så fall i vilken utsträckning, hushållen anpassar sin elanvändning till en effekttariff i det här avseendet är de förväntade konsekvenserna av, och därmed attityden till, den aktuella beteendeförändringen samt den upplevda graden av kontroll över densamma. Mer konkret innebär det att ekonomiska besparingar samt positiva effekter för miljö, klimatförändringar och en hållbar utveckling för yngre och kommande generationer utgör de viktigaste drivkrafterna, medan omständigheten att man anser sin elförbrukning vara i princip obefintlig, eller att man redan idag använder i stort sett all el under låglasttid utgör de största hindren, för att anpassa sin elanvändning till effekttariffen.

    De skillnader som har observerats avseende såväl drivkrafter som faktiskt beteende är genomgående större mellan de olika boendeformerna än de båda områdena, det vill säga skillnaderna som beror på om hushållen har en effekttariff eller inte, vilket tyder på att man bör anpassa affärsmodeller för ökad förbrukningsflexibilitet till olika hushållskategorier. Denna slutsats bekräftas av en klusteranalys och påföljande segmentering, som identifierade sex för ändamålet relevanta och heterogena grupper av hushåll inom varje boendeformskategori.

    Slutsatsen som har dragits är således att viljan finns där, men att de önskade effekterna uteblir. Potentialen är med andra ord stor, men vi behöver mer sofistikerade affärsmodeller för att realisera den.

    Abstract [sv]

    Projektet utgör en fallstudie beträffande implementeringen av en marknadsstyrd effekttariff i kundsegmentet 35-63 A inom eldistributionen. Studien genomförs inom ramen för ett pilotprojekt på Sandviken Energi Elnät AB och i nära samarbete med övriga nätbolag som omfattas av nätverket Elinorr.

    En ökad efterfrågeflexibilitet, det vill säga en anpassning av elanvändningen till överförings- och produktionskapaciteten i energisystemet, är ett viktigt led i de politiska ambitionerna att minska utsläppen av växthusgaser samt att öka energieffektiviseringen och andelen förnyelsebara energikällor. En viktig premiss för realiseringen av dessa mål är så kallade smarta elnät. Dessa förväntas möjliggöra övergången från en fossilberoende till en eldriven fordonspark och den storskaliga integrationen av el från exempelvis sol och vind i energisystemet, vilket i sin tur både påverkar och ställer krav på elkonsumenters beteende. För att klara omställningen till ett uthålligt energisystem måste det således skapas förutsättningar för elkonsumenter att medverka till en effektivare elanvändning.

    Mot denna bakgrund har nätbolagen som omfattas av Elinorr utvecklat ett tariffkoncept, som kallas ”marknadsstyrd effekttariff” och syftar till att skapa incitament för efterfrågeflexibilitet inom eldistributionen. Grundprincipen är att tariffen uppdateras årligen med utgångspunkt från de två föregående årens lastkurvor. Kunderna påverkar således nästkommande års tariff via sitt elanvändningsmönster. Effektavgiften varierar från månad till månad och är baserad på den sammanlagrade maxeffekten i samtliga kundsegment. Det övergripande syftet med projektet är att empiriskt studera effekten av den marknadsstyrda effekttariffen på elanvändningsmönstret samt elkonsumenternas uppfattning om och förståelse för densamma.

    Den 1 maj 2015 införde Sandviken Energi Elnät AB, som omfattas av Elinorr, den marknadsstyrda effekttariffen i kundsegmentet 35-63A. Analyserna avseende den marknadsstyrda effekttariffens inverkan på lastkurvans profil är baserade på timvisa elkonsumtionsdata från denna grupp elkonsumenter i Sandviken och motsvarande kundsegment i referensområdet Sundsvall. Delstudien som avser kundperspektivet är baserad på djupintervjuer och en enkätstudie.

    Studiens resultat påvisar att implementeringen av den marknadsstyrda effekttariffen, trots låg kännedom om dess existens, har haft en effekt på elanvändningsmönstret och att denna tenderar att öka över tid.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis explores how to develop new lifting equipment for the membrane and filter plates of the VPA (Metso) machine satisfying all the safety requirements. The VPA is a heavy duty machine with a number of plates, developed for filtration of minerals. The plates must be replaced or removed immediately once the wear has reached a given value or an error has been detected.

    The new lifting system differs to a great extent from conventional system in which a fiber strap was used; the designed lifting equipment comprises of a variety of parts resulting in a higher capacity to be used ín different situations safer and satisfies the vital requirements such as being a secure and cost-effective method, issued by the customers.

    Several solution proposals have been developed to offer better proposals before the final candidate has been selected and theoretically motivated with FEM analysis as well as analytical calculations.

    Examensarbetet utfördes vid ett vårdföretag i Storstockholm under våren 2017. Syftet med examensarbete var att kartlägga hur verksamhetens ledningsgrupp, beskrivet genom varje ledningsgruppsmedlem, såg på mål och vision. Utifrån resultatet genererades förbättringsförslag med adekvat implementeringsplan för utveckling. Frågeställningarna grundade sig i att ta fram en kartläggning av ledningsgruppens arbete med mål och vision, vilka påverkansfaktorer som fanns på området och vad som skulle kunna utvecklas. Målet var att examensarbetet skulle vara till gagn och rendera framtida fördelar för verksamhetens arbete, genom möjlighet att ta del av framställda förbättringsförslag och tillhörande implementeringsplan. Examensarbetet grundade sig i en förstudie där förbättringsområden kartlagts, där området mål och vision valdes i samverkan med handledare, ämnesgranskare och författarna för vidare arbete. En kvalitativ studie genomfördes med fenomenologisk ansats med metodtriangulering med djupintervjuer, observation av intern ISO-revision och en dokumentstudie av mötesprotokoll från ledningsgruppsmöten. Kvalitetsstudien var induktiv, vilket ledde till att teorin sammanställdes efter resultatet dokumenterades. Resultatet bearbetades av dataanalysverktygen kategorisering, kodning och koncentrering. Det framkom att ledningsgruppen inte hade en gemensam syn på tydligheten sett till långsiktiga mål och visioner. Ett flertal påverkansfaktorer framkom under arbetet och resulterade i slutsatser med förbättringsförslag och implementeringsplan. Resultatet har främst betydelse för den verksamhet som deltagit i examensarbetet, men även andra organisationer och studier kan gagnas av arbetet.

    In recent years the construction industry has been exposed to increased time pressure which has resulted in a higher amount of wastage. Today 35 % of all construction projects in Sweden is "wasted". Time pressure has risen due to increased competition on the market, with more actors entering the construction business, therefore profit margins decreased which has led to a more pressing need for decreasing the amount of wastage.

    Bravida is Scandinavia's largest supplier of installations and provides specialist services in electrical installations (heating and sanitation), and ventilation. Mahdi Bawaqneh's task was to investigate where, how and why wastage occurs in the company's projects and how to prevent such wastage. The thesis covers the subjects of lean production, communication in projects and planning of projects. Mahdi Bawaqneh has chosen to use interviews and participant observations to understand Bravida's

    organization. For the best purposes of the thesis, Mahdi decided to focus on examining two projects in detail, namely Brf in Märsta and Skandionkliniken in Uppsala.

    The conclusion of the thesis presents that problems may always arise, however it is possible to prevent them. The main difficulties discovered in the thesis are the lack of information in some parts of the process, drawing and communication problems, and finally the lack of cohesion and thematic sense among employees. In order for Bravida to develop and remain competitive on the marketplace a higher level of commitment and willingness to improve is required from the entire company, as well as patience, when it comes to the implementation of the proposed solutions.

    The thesis project resulted in a number of improvement proposals for the identified problems. These suggestions for development are intended to prevent future wastage in prospective and upcoming projects.

    Many companies do not register all the stops that occur in a production plant, it often takes longer to report than to fix the problem. If no problems are registered, you cannot trace where the problems arise.

    This master thesis was performed at AcobiaFLUX and they have noticed an increased demand from their customers to trace problems raised in their processes. The aim of the thesis was to find out how a tool to monitor a process best could be developed. Then the most essential from the theoretical base was developed into a useful tool for operators. For the operators to know if the process utilizes the full capacity of a process, the tool presents a measure of the Overall Equipment Efficiency, OEE. OEE is calculated by  ultiplying availability, performance and quality. Availability indicates how much time the  quipment is used for production. Performance indicates how efficient production is in terms of production speed. Quality indicates how many products that have been approved.

    In order for a tool that monitors processes and present production efficiency to be helpful it must be easy and intuitive for the user. To make an easy and intuitive tool for operators some Human-Computer-Interaction guidelines where used. The tool is not the primary  orkspace for an operator and therefore the use of the tool need to be minimized so it will not steal the operator’s time. To become a tool for tracing problems in processes, all operators need to participate and use the tool properly, otherwise you cannot compare if the production efficiency has been improved.

    ABB Motors and Generators manufacture large AC machines with oil lubricated plainbearings. The machines have occasional problems with oil leakage from the bearings. aproblem that ABB wants to be solved.In this thesis the cause of this leakage were investigated, with focus on the bearingseals.The purpose of this work was also to suggest amndments for preventing thisproblem. , and to suggest improvements that can prevent this. The first step was todo a literature survey of earlier work on this problem, study the theory ofhydrodynamic bearings and different types of seals and their properties. Severalexperiments and pressure measurements were performed on machines in operation.The results were then analyzed to identify the causes of leakage and to confirm/oreliminate the hypotheses that had been stablished in the earlier stage of this work.Finally, recommendations for problem management was proposed. New designs werealso developed based on the experimental findings, interviews with the technicians inthe company, and observations on the manufacturing and repairing procedures madeduring this work.The experimental and analytical results suggests that the current design of the bearingsystmem is sensitive to oil leakage. It has been discovered that pressure is the mostrelevant parameter, while several other parameters also contribute to the problem.

    Abstract [en]

    Fiomi Diagnostics AB manufactures and develops point of care cassettes for bloodsamples to determine risk of myocardial infarction and heart failure for use within thehealthcare sector. The cassette contains of three main parts; top, bottom and a plasticchip. The bottom parts are delivered directly from the supplier to the assembly linewhile the top part has to be prepared with a membrane for blood separation byultrasonic welding before it can be sent to the assembly line.

    At present the top parts are provided with the membranes a floor below theassembly line and therefore have to be transported by carriers to the assembly line.These carriers are currently designed as large plates (400 x 600 mm) with a capacityof 120 top parts, but they are space consuming at the ultrasonic welder as well at theassembly line.To solve this lack of space the operators often place the platesdiagonally behind themselves where room is available. This causes ergonomicproblems due to the many twists of the upper body conducted at both processes.

    To solve the ergonomic problems this thesis work were initiated to develop a newmore agile carrier between the two processes. During the thesis work TRIZ wereused to trigger creative concepts, choose among them and combine the good ideasfrom different concepts. After the conceptual phase different manufacturing methodswere explored. To be certain that the concept could be manufactured by specificmanufacturing process different manufactures were contacted to help out with whatwould make the concept suitable for the specific method. The manufacturing methodsexamined were: injection molding, plastic and aluminum extrusion, vacuum molding,additive manufacturing and sheet metal bending.

    Prototypes of the three best concepts were created by 3D-printing to be evaluatedby the operators whom in the future might be using the new carriers. Complementedwith an evaluation of the carriers economic and performance data, a recommendationof which carrier should be selected were concluded.

    The result was a carrier manufactured by sheet metal bending with a pattern cut outwhich allows for the top parts to hang in the carrier. The design has a capacity of 60top parts which is half of the current carrier, but with a base area of a sixth of thecurrent carrier gives the new design an increase in surface efficiency by 300 %. Due tothe low order size the sheet metal alternative was the cheapest alternative.

    Internet of Things is an emerging technology that is expected to completely change the way that physical objects interact with each other. It is based on physical objects embedded with sensors and network connectivity that allows these objects to collect data and information. By gathering and analysing this data, it allows companies to use the information to create new business opportunities. This thesis aims to study how businesses will have to change their business models in order to adapt to the new Internet of Things mind-set. To help answer the research questions, a business case at Regal Components has been conducted.

     

    The data was gathered through interviews with researchers and companies working with Internet of Things solutions. The empirical data was analysed by the theoretical tools: business model canvas, value proposition canvas, pricing strategies and SWOT analysis.

    The conclusion of this study shows that companies similar to Regal needs to make big changes in their organisation in order to enter the Internet of Things market. Companies will need to invest in platforms to be able to make analysis with data gathered from their sensors. For companies far back in the value chain it is even more difficult to make a profit, some kind of partnership is therefore a must-do. By adapting the business model to an Internet of Things based business model, it will allow companies to create new business opportunities.

    Abstract [en]

    The entrepreneurial logic has spread via an abundance of organisations and various

    peoples that embrace the promise of prosperity it indoctrinates. Apart from the

    generation of new companies and market places this indoctrination also entails a

    flexible invention of enterprising subjectivities. Recently, we have seen a

    diversification of the contexts in which enterprising subjectivities are invited to

    undergird entrepreneurship. For example in the context of social entrepreneurship

    (Dey, 2014) and ecopreneurship (Skoglund, forthcoming). How we are invited to

    happily join in and contribute to this entrepreneurship discourse, even as critical

    scholars, needs to be seriously considered as the variety of enterprising selves

    advances. As researchers teaching in entrepreneurship we believe that it is not enough

    to contemplate upon and write papers about, but also find new approaches to,

    entrepreneurship studies and teaching thereof.

    This paper presents the development and implementation of a critical

    entrepreneurship course, “Entrepreneurship and the Enterprising Self” (EES),

    designed for master students. The course was developed with the purpose to 1)

    deconstruct the basic ontological assumptions that undergird the entrepreneurial logic

    and explore the extension and reformulation of these assumptions for various forms of

    entrepreneurship, such as social entrepreneurship and ecopreneurship, 2) to analyse

    the broadening of enterprising subjectivities that unfold hand in hand with these forms

    of entrepreneurship, and 3) to go beyond these forms of entrepreneurship and

    subjectivities to touch upon the (im)possibility to collectively construct new worlds.

    Today it becomes more and more important to work with continuous improvements to stay ahead of the competitors. Pfizer in Strängsäs started working with continuous improvements in 2010. By the end of 2012, the company’s goal is to reach 24 improvements per employee at the factory.

    Their project has two main purposes; to examine the need and possibilities for visualization regarding continuous improvements at the production department and to develop a concept for visualisation of the entire factory’s continuous improvements.

    To attain the information required to examine the needs at the production department, interviews with relevant employees at the department were conducted. Using interviews as a benchmarking instrument was also helpful in getting different points of views. The benchmarking was performed both internally at the factory and externally at Atlas Copco Craelius AB. To attain information about the visualization of the entire factory’s continuous improvements interviews were conducted with stakeholders.

    There have been different methods used to get as a good result as possible. Risk analysis, product function analysis and brainstorming have been executed to get information to both parts of the project and by that ensuring the result.

    The end result of the production department showed that two of the sections, the fermentation and the purification, are in need of visualization; visualization by using improvement boards would increase the possibility to communicate the information regarding improvements to relevant staff. However, this need varies between the two departments, resulting in different boards for each one.

    There will be a need to establish routines on how to use the boards to ensure that they fulfil their purpose. Through recurring meetings with a fixed agenda there will be an opportunity for everybody to discuss and process the work regarding these continuous improvements in an efficient and just way.

    The result for visualization of the factory’s work with continuous improvements is a concept with suggestions of different features that can be included on a wall in the entry hall. The concept’s purpose is to make it easy for employees and visitors to understand how well the factory embraces and handles these improvements. There will also be a feature that makes it possible to headlight successful improvements, relevant meetings and important groups at the factory.
