Social Media and Civil Society in the Russian Protests, December 2011: The role of social media in engagement of people in the protests and their self-identification with civil society2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The study examines the phenomenon of the December protests in Russia when thousands of citizens were involved in the protest movement after the frauds during the Parliamentary elections. There was a popular opinion in the Internet media that at that moment Russia experienced establishment of civil society, since so many people were ready to express their discontent publically for the first time in 20 years.

The focus of this study is made on the analysis of the roles that social media played in the protest movement. As it could be observed at the first glance, recruiting and mobilising individuals to participation in the rallies were mainly conducted via social media. The research analyses the concept of civil society and its relevance to the protest rhetoric and investigates, whether there was a phenomenon of civil society indeed and how it was connected to individuals’ motivation for joining the protest.

The concept of civil society is discussed through the social capital, social and political trust, e-democracy and mediatisation frameworks. The study provides a comprehensive description of the events, based on mainstream and new media sources, in order to depict the nature and the development of the movement. The structure of the protests is analysed through the new social movement theory. Also, various approaches to engagement of people in the social movements are presentedl, including political marketing framework.

The research was conducted in several main stages, using content analysis, survey and interviewing as main methods. The main conclusions of the study: relatively minor impact of social media in the engagement of people in the protest, a narrow section of the population as the audience of social media protesters (for them civil society mostly played a role of a customer need), and yet a significant potential of ICT in the future political life of the country.

En Kommunikations Illustration: Interaktionen mellan deltagare i ledarlösa samarbeten2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The objective of this study is to illustrate how participants in leaderless based projects communicate with each other. Several studies have focused on technology-supported projects, such as open source projects, with an established project manager and goal. There is a lack, to the best of our knowledge, in studies that deal with the communication pattern in a leaderless computer supported collaborative project.

Method: We have chosen to use a quantitative method where we systematically group several messages according to their content. This method was used in a similar study to illustrate the communication between participants involved in an open source project. We have taken the same Kripendorff based method and adapted it to our study by adding more descriptive variables.

Theoretical perspectives: Manuel Castell discusses the aspects of a new communication power that is rooted in the individual as part of a larger creative audience. The collaborative works we have studies are prime examples of how the creative audience works together and of mass self‐communication. In order to analyze the potential motivations behind the participant’s involvement in these collaborative works, we have adopted the ideas of Preece and Shneidermans frame theory. They have identified 4 major roles in most onlinebased co‐operations and refer to them as reader, contributor, collaborator and leader.

Result: Our results show that the communication in computer supported collaborative works is characterized by positive and energetic communication. The participants are all involved by their own will; they contribute because they want to. We believe this to be the major factor influencing the flow and form of communication between the participants. The majority of posts are comments to other participants or contributing posts that add to the progression of the discourse. We also have reason to believe that the use of smileys and embedded pictures is related to the tools available to the participants; the quicker and easier it is to add a picture the more likely the participants will use these tools.

The New York Times sommaren 2014.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

The New York Times (USA).

Israel nämns överlägset flest gånger i båda tidningar.

    Abstract [en]

With the intention to fill a gap in the research field, this thesis porposes to illuminate privatepersons’ use of Instagram simply as private actors without any profitable interest. The users with a solely personal interest may in some cases attract thousands of followers in the scale ofcelebrity fan base. This thesis aims to map out what motivates and drives a thought-through, strategic use of Instagram, to discover if there is a strategic use of Instagram among the objects of study and also to share the objects of study’s reflections about their Instagram use. Through a selection based on the number of followers of a non-profitable Instagram profile, age and an involvement in the culture and/or media business, ten people were selectedto constitute the objects of study. Through a comparision of five users with many followers (more than 1000) and five with few (less than 500), a comparative study was made to discover differences and similarities in their use and attitudes to Instagram. With an abductive approach and a rich theoretical framework, focusing on theories concering self-presentationand personal branding, in-dept interviews were made to create a deep understanding of the subject of research. The intervew answers were processed through a content analysis that concluded astrategic use among all of the objects of study, motivated by personal satisfaction and hopes of being percieved in a certain way. The users with many followers all reflected on and experience negative psychologial concequenses from their Instagram use, but the reflections and effects were absent among the users with few followers. The study demonstrate user patterns amongst those observed that suggest that a greater commitment to Instagram is more likely to have an effect on mental health.

"We are like Chameleons": Changing Mediascapes, Cultural Identities and City Sisters in Dar es Salaam2010Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The consequences of expanding mediascapes and processes of cultural globalisation during the early 21st century is the focus of this thesis. The author has conducted extensive field studies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She explores the construction of cultural and gendered identities at the intersection of notions of the local and the global, the rural and the urban, traditional and modern, female and male, and investigates the production of selves at the intersection of mediated and lived experience.

The media often gets the blame for threatening authentic, indigenous cultures, and for influ-encing young people to give up ‘traditional’ ways of living and behaving. But as this study will emphasise, Tanzanian culture has always been charac-terised by multiculturalism and cultural processes of hybridity.

This study analyses how media and popular culture produce cultural identities and gendered selves. The main characters are a group of young women from different places in Tanzania, with various backgrounds, who have in common that they for two years were secondary school students at a girls’ school in Dar es Salaam. Like for young people in most parts of the contem-porary world, particularly in urban areas, media and popular culture play a central role in these girls’ everyday lives, in a variety of ways, both positive and negative. The process of ‘becoming a woman’ turns out to be surrounded by conflicting ideas, expectations and ideals. Participation in the commercial youth culture, growing literally just outside the doors of the young women’s boarding school, may be as distant as the dream of a life in a remote country. But the imaginations and fantasies it gives rise to feed into their experiences and subjectivities as young women in early 21st century Tanzania.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

With a qualitative text analysis, we have studied how media portrays a mother and a father who have murdered their child and if, and how, this portraiture differs. This is a study based on 32 articles from the biggest newspaper in Sweden, Aftonbladet. With journalistic processes in mind, we also intended to identify potential reasons for the portraiture. The analysis is based on agenda-setting theory, to find in what way Aftonbladet has the power to portray the perpetrators. With gender studies as a complement, we have examined how social norms affects the portraiture in different ways. The results show that the mother and father is portrayed in unequal ways. The mother is always connected to her motherhood who despite her crime, becomes a victim. The father is portrayed as a former soldier and his role as a father is omitted. In summary, the motherhood gets glorified and the fatherhood discriminated. In the context of the Swedish media landscape, this study has enabled a discussion concerning how the public perceive a murdering mother and father depending on the portraiture. In turn, the portraiture could be seen reflecting on social norms and confirms how media possess the power to influence the agenda, intentionally or not.

Purpose/Aim: This essay seeks to study how the Swedish political party the Sweden Democrats was framed in Swedish local press during the month of the parliamentary election in 2010. The study is based upon eight local newspapers located in the municipalities where the voting result for the Sweden Democrats increased the most and the least.

Material/Method: The material consists of 263 articles from eight different local newspapers gathered from the month of September 2010 (the month of the election). Using a quantitative content analysis and a cluster analysis inspired by Matthes & Kohring, a comparison of the framing is made between the different newspapers. The results of this comparison are then analyzed and discussed by applying theories of political communication, media logic and framing.

Main results: The results show that some similarities and some differences occur regarding the framing of the Sweden Democrats between the different newspapers. A neutral frame of the party’s policies and the result of the election was common in all of the newspaper. This frame was, however, somewhat more salient in the newspapers where the party increased the most. While the group of newspapers where the party increased the least tended to criticize the Sweden Democrats to a higher extent, the moral evaluations in the other group of newspapers differed and also tended to criticize other parties to a higher extent. Regarding the treatment of the party in terms of bias no major differences could be distinguished.

Keywords: Framing, The Sweden Democrats, media logic, political communication, local press, quantitative content analysis.

AbstractTitle: The Debate on Google Books: a critical discourse analysis of newspapers and blogs.(Debatten om Google Books. En kritisk diskursanalys av dagspress och bloggar.)Number of pages: 44 (47)Author: Karin EngströmTutor: Martin FredrikssonCourse: Media and Communication Studies CPeriod: Autumn 2009University: Institution of Informatics and Media, Uppsala UniversityAim: The aim of this study is to survey the debate on Google Books in Swedish newspapers andblogs and to see if the arguments and opinions differ depending on media type and writer.Furthermore, the aim of this study is to put the debate in a bigger perspective, with the copyrightlaw, and the future of copyright law, in focus.Material/Method: 15 articles on Google Books from the two biggest Swedish newspapers, Dagensnyheter and Svenska dagbladet, and blogs discussing the articles were studied. The theoretical andmethodological scope of the study is critical discourse analysis inspired by Norman Fairclough'sthree-dimensional model.Main Results: The results of this study suggest that most authors and IT workers, as well as libraryrepresentatives, were overwhelmingly positive to Google Books, while publishers and somejournalists expressed a more skeptical point of view. The newspapers studied publishedcontributions from all sides – authors, journalists, representatives from publishing houses andlibraries, as well as workers in the IT sector. The arguments of the publishers' representatives wereallowed slightly more space in newspapers, while the blogs analyzed featured debate contributionsfrom authors and journalists. In addition to publishing representatives, also influental in the debatewere those who fall under the category of "academic discourse", such as the Royal Library'sresearch director Pelle Snickars. The arguments of the various media did not differ significantly, but as the majority of blogs were written by professional authors, there was a greater tendencytowards positive views of Google Books. The debate on Google Books in Sweden has also largelybeen about copyright, and many of the debaters are also arguing for a change in copyright thatbetter fits with today's IT society. Keywords: Google Books, Copyright, Newspapers, Blogs, Discourse

I samhällets tjänst: en fallstudie om socialt ansvarstagande2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Critical Policy Analysis and Legal Interpretivism On Freedom of Expression and Media Freedom in Contemporary Turkey2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

New media policy and regulations have become a democratization problem especially in most of the developing countries. By the time new ICT developments bring more new media channels on a wider spectrum, the states policies are struggling between the implementation of the democratic tools evenly and protecting their own authoritarian state. Turkey has been governed by an authoritarian state for ten years, coming along with the years, the media policies and the regulations have been threatening media freedom and freedom of expression intensively around the country. There emerged a regulation problem, which is a major outcome of treating new media tools the same as traditional media channels. Since the state owes its success mostly to its media propaganda, the stabilization of current state power has been managed by the restrictions over media freedom, which results in a great danger of violating human rights in the country. The media has been imposed by the main dominant political ideology, which is the combination of conservative values, patriarchal mentality and the authoritarian system. The media coming along with many features has protected the ultimate state power in Turkey. The media power in the country has become an intense ideology supporter, which has been accomplished by media regulator bodies, media monopoly owners, and press independency over political conservative attachments. The analysis presented in this thesis consists of many cases in relation to the media and state relationship; which has recently experienced an uprising in Turkey, revealing the struggle between the power structures due to those recent media developments over ideal, ethical, political and cultural polarization across the country.

    (re)Articulating feminism: A discourse analysis of Sweden’s Feminist Initiative election campaign2016Inngår i: Nordicom Review, ISSN 1403-1108, E-ISSN 2001-5119, Vol. 37, nr 2, s. 1-16Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this article we study campaign material of the Swedish party Feminist Initiative (FI) during the 2014 parliamentary election campaign in Sweden. Approaching the topic from discourse-theoretical and intersectional perspectives, we ask how the inclusion of various social groups into the hegemonic project of feminist politics becomes possible, what was constructed as an antagonist to feminist politics, and in what ways it impeded FI to realise such politics. Our findings show that intersectionality allowed FI to include every group/ individual into its feminist political project as long as they experienced oppression. Even though racists and nationalists in general (the Sweden Democrats in particular) were singled out as antagonists, it was mainly norms and structures that were addressed in the online material as standing in the way for FI to fulfil both their identity and hegemonic project.

The Collective Identity of Anonymous: Web of Meanings in a Digitally Enabled Movement2016Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The present dissertation explores the collective identity of the Anonymous movement. This movement is characterised by the heterogeneity of its activities, from meme-crafting to pranks to activist actions, with a wide range of goals and tactics. Such heterogeneity raises the question as to why such a diverse group of people makes the decision to act under the same name. To answer this question, the concept of collective identity is applied, which describes how participants collectively construct the definition of their group.

This dissertation is based on a three-year ethnography. The main findings show that the collective identity of Anonymous rests on five sets of self-defining concepts related to: 1) Anonymous’ counterculture of offense and parrhesia, 2) its personification into two personae (the ‘trickster’ and the ‘hero’) that have differing goals, means, and relationships with the environment, 3) a horizontal organisation and a democratic decision-making process, 4) practices of anonymity and an ethics of self-effacement, and 5) its self-definition as a universal entity, inclusive, and unbounded. The collective identity construction process is marked by tensions due to the incompatibility of some of these concepts, but also due to differences between these collective identity definitions and actual practices. As a consequence, they have to be constantly reaffirmed through social actions and discourses.

Not all individuals who reclaim themselves as Anonymous recognise the totality of these collective identity definitions, but they all accept a number of them that are sufficient to legitimate their own belonging to the movement, and most of the time to be recognised by others as such. The different groups constituting Anonymous are therefore symbolically linked through a web of collective identity definitions rather than an encompassing and unified collective identity. This ‘connective identity’ gives the movement a heterogeneous composition while at the same time permitting it to retain a sense of identity that explains the use of a collective name.

    Abstract [en]

The task of this article is to analyze the political economy of Wikipedia. We discuss the specifics of Wikipedia’s mode of production. The basic principles of what we call the info-communist mode of production will be presented. Our analysis is grounded in Marxist philosophy and Marxist political economy, and is connected to the current discourse about the renewal and reloading of the idea of communism that is undertaken by thinkers like Slavoj Žižek and Alain Badiou. We explore to which extent Wikipedia encompasses principles that go beyond the capitalist mode of production and represent the info-communist mode of production. We present the subjective dimension of the mode of production (cooperative labor), the objective dimension of the mode of production (common ownership of the means of production), and the subject–object dimension of the mode of production (the effects and products of the mode of production).

Vem är svensk?: En undersökning av olika gruppers diskussioner i relation till filmen Sveriges bästa svensk2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In a multicultural society, questions like integration, national identity and swedishness become of immediate importance. The comedy-drama Sveriges bästa svensk was created as a contribution to affect the public debate on these issues and encourage people to think about what is swedish, and to break down prejudices that exist in the society. The purpose of this study is to examine what kind of discussions develop in relation to the film. The purpose is also to examine if these discussions can be related to the purpose and goals of the film project. To examine this, theories about communications strategies of organisations and theories of humor to affect way of thoughts have been used. Two focus group interviews took place, whereof one with swedish-born swedes and another with foreign-born swedes to be able to find similarities and differences in the discussions between the groups. The analysis shows that the purpose, to start a discussion, is accomplished within both groups albeit in different ways. The discussion within the group of swedish-borns is mainly about the problematization of swedishness and the discussions within the group of foreign-borns is mainly about adjustments and belonging. The groups mutually believe that integration should not be about assimilation. They also agreed that the genre of humor for this type of question was problematic because the film, according to them, lost its message. The questions regarding swedishness and integration proved to be current and this type of effort, using film, is an important part of the public debate.

Creativity Caged in Translation: A Neo-Institutional Perspective on Crisis Communication2013Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

After early attempts to create universal models guiding managers in times of crisis - more recent attempts have focused on situational factors and the relationships between organizations and stakeholders in times of crises. Albeit this shift, structural conditions are often overlooked in the main bulk of research on crisis communication and if they are integrated they are defined as context and as such often excluded in the analysis. This is our point of departure for bringing neo-institutional theory into crisis communication research recognizing the importance of cultural, political, technological, and institutional environments of organizations. By this we shift focus from agency to structure and the social preconditions for organizational activities. However this is not to say that institutions are static or deterministic in the way they influence organizations and their behavior. On the contrary, institutions are open for innovations and interpretations. In this paper we put forward the concept of translation to illustrate and explain how organizations actively relate to and handle institutional pressure, thereby escaping the legal and moral/normative boundaries of institutions. Hereby we aim to contribute to the growing debate within the crisis communication field on new theoretical venues in understanding crisis communication as a practice but also as societal phenomenon. In our conclusion we suggest that the appliance of neo-institutional frameworks will help us understand the conditions under which crisis communication is carried out and in doing so allow researchers and practitioners to have a realistic stance on the limitations and possibility on communication in crises. Further, the framework will increase our abilities to understand the development of crisis communication, its institutionalization and the conditions for these developments.

Pokémon GO, underhållning eller arbete?: En studie om upplevelser och värdeproducerande aktiviteter i spel2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 12 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates players experience of the augmented reality game Pokémon Go in relation to value producing activities. The game uses geographical places to encourage people to walk around in the real world. The goal of the game is to find and catch all 700 different types of pokémon.

The theoretical perspective come from a contemporary marxist tradition that examine digital user activity as labour. The purpose of the study is to investigate players experiences of playing the game and if and how it changes due to being value producing activity that benefits the game producers. To examine this phenomenon we used autoethnography as basis for developing an interview guide and then interviewed 9 players of the game.

The study shows that players mostly enjoy their time in the game but that some activities can be precepted as forced in certain conditions. People enjoy having a goal to pursue and being active and social in the game. At the same time, the game calls for attention based on the location and time. This can make the players prioritize the game even when they feel they should not. The findings stress the importance of more thorough research on how the profit gaining purpose of media companies affect people's everyday lives and experiences. It also stresses the importance to have a broader societal debate about how data collection affects us, not only by being sold but by changing our behaviour to the likes of the companies.

    Abstract [en]

This article provides an analysis of the political economy of privacy and surveillance on Facebook. The concepts of socialist privacy and socialist internet privacy are advanced here. Capital accumulation on Facebook is based on the commodification of users and their data. One can in this context speak, based on Dallas Smythe, of the exploitation of the internet prosumer commodity. Aspects of a socialist internet privacy strategy are outlined and it is shown how they can be applied to social networking sites.

    Abstract [en]

The task of this paper is to analyse how WikiLeaks relates to capitalism. It deals specifically with the questions: Is WikiLeaks a counter-surveillance medium? Is it a form of alternative medium and alternative journalism? How does WikiLeaks relate to the liberal and socialist worldviews? The role of WikiLeaks as a watchdog organisation is analysed and the role of surveillance, counter-surveillance and transparency is discussed (section 2). The paper assesses how ideology and worldviews shape WikiLeaks self-understanding (section 3) and WikiLeaks is connected to journalism and alternative media theory (section 4). Finally, some conclusions about the role of WikiLeaks in contemporary capitalism are drawn (section 5).
