En utvecklande lära: En undersökning av kursplaner i religionskunskap för gymnasieskolan2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay was to investigate how the syllabuses of religious education have changed from 1970–2011. To do this the following questions were answered: How have the syllabuses of religious education changed from 1970–2011? What has been removed and what has been added? How have the training course objectives changed? How has the content of the syllabuses changed? The method used in this essay is content analysis. The results of this essay show that the content of the syllabuses has not changed, although it is now described in further detail. The modern syllabuses are far more detailed then the oldest syllabus. One conclusion was that Christianity was the only expressly named religion.

The First Islamic Chronicle: The Chronicle of Khalīfa b. Khayyāṭ (d. AD 854)2017Inngår i: Universal Chronicles in the High Middle Ages / [ed] Michele Campopiano; Henry Bainton, Boydell & Brewer, 2017, 1, s. 19-42Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The Chronicle (Ar. Taʾrīkh) of Khalīfa b. Khayyāṭ (d. AD 854) was composed in the early-to-mid ninth century and is the oldest Islamic chronicle still extant. Its compiler was a scholar of Qurʾān and ḥadīth – that is, a scholar of both of the Qurʾānic revelation and of the ‘reports’ or ‘traditions’ about the Prophet Muḥammad and the earliest Muslims. Khalīfa lived and worked in the large southern Iraqi port city of Basra – at the time one of the foremost centres of learning in the Islamic world. His Chronicle is arranged annalistically by years of the lunar Hijri calendar, beginning, after a short introduction, with year one – the year of the Prophet Muhammad's emigration (hijra) from Mecca to Medina (AD 622) – and ending with year AH 232/AD 847. It covers, in summary fashion, the political and administrative history of the Muslim polity, from its origins in Medina at the time of the Prophet and under the first caliphs through to the Umayyad and Abbasid caliphates.

Despite its early date, Khalīfa's Chronicle has received little attention in modern scholarship. Survey and textbook accounts tend to remark on its being the earliest surviving history in Arabic arranged chronologically, in contrast to earlier extant works which are structured thematically or arranged as biographical entries on individuals by generations. Modern historians have tended to dismiss it as telling us little or nothing that is not found in later, more famous works of the ninth century. It is, after all, much shorter than the surviving compendious histories produced in Iraq two or three generations later by al-Balādhurī (d. c. 892) and al-Ṭabarī (d. 923): al-Ṭabarī's History of Messengers and Kings (Taʾrīkh al-rusul wa-l-mulūk) is perhaps twenty times as long; al-Balādhurī's genealogically-arranged historical work, Genealogies of the Tribal Notables (Ansāb al-ashrāf), is perhaps about fifty times the length of Khalīfa's work.

But although Khalīfa's Chronicle may not provide many facts not known from later works, his framing of the material and the context of its compilation are markedly different from other early histories. In other words, the Chronicle itself is a hitherto-overlooked historical fact that raises important questions about the origins and development of Arabic chronicle-writing and the different ways in which the early Muslims went about finding their place in history and politics.

Mai-Kadran Massacre and opposing narratives, The influence of Ethiopian Constitution, Religion and other Institutions2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This research is about Mai kadra massacre that happened on Nov. 9 2020 during the Ethiopian National Defense Force law enforcement operation against the Tigray regional state. The massacre has ended with two conflicting narratives. This short research is therefore to clearly analyze secondary data collected (sources) against the two narratives of the massacre. Though there were difficulties to get as many documents as possible, the already collected data with some additional sources were used to answer the research questions and to give solutions for the research problems. At the beginning, this study presented the details of all the main documents to explain what claims about the Mai kadra massacre have raised. Secondly, claimed reasons about the massacre have discussed to answer one of the research questions (why the massacre has happened?) based on the secondary data collected and some other related documents. At last, the different themes formed have been analyzed against the two opposing narratives of this study. In relation to data analysis, thematic analysis under qualitative approach is used. Significant and essential theme ideas are drawn out from the data collected and organized in to different themes. All the themes are described and summarized according to their position about the two conflicting narratives in order to give clear information for readers. Opinions of the researcher are also added.

    Abstract [en]

It is often claimed that in Christian tradition trees and plants are reduced to passive material created for human exploitation, that the only important living creatures are Adam and Eve. But could such a view have less to do with Christianity as a religion and more to do with Cartesian notions in Western modernity? Earlier Christians undoubtedly exhibited a fascination with trees that exceeded a mere interest in the wood of the Cross or typologies thereof. According to literature produced by pre-modern Christians, they interacted actively with the arboreal realm, and trees interacted with them. The same body of literature suggests a sense of affinity between human beings and wooden beings. Exploring diverse texts about trees from the first Christian millennium, the article demonstrates that many Christians ascribed agency to plants. Trees could behave and communicate in various ways, those studied here were pious and acted with devotion in relation to the holy.

Some Early Christian Trees2021Inngår i: Studia Patristica. Vol. CIV - Papers presented at the Eighteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 2019: Volume 1: Introduction; Historica / [ed] Markus Vinzent, Leuven: Peeters Publishers, 2021, s. 127-137Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In the wake of the current environmental crisis, scholars of late antique Christianity are beginning to study Christian attitudes towards the natural world. How did the early Christians relate to their environment? This article explores perceptions of trees, surveying the writings of Tertullian, Basil of Caesarea, and Sozomen the historian. What did an arboreal plant do, according to patristic authors? What kind of agency did they imagine trees to have? The investigation shows that members of the educated elite might think of trees as bodies with living, intelligent souls; they saw complex variety and gendered creatures with personal characteristics when they gazed at beings in bark. Certain arboreal species engaged in and were communicating through a sexual-life; many individuals made rational choices. Although trees are not free to move around, Christians assumed that boughs and branches could bend in devotion as trees expressed attention to divine presence.

    Abstract [en]

Today modern scholars only have a few records left that discusses personal birthdays in the Roman society. This paper serves to discuss how personal birthdays during the 1 century BC were religiously charged by three components: genius, liba and the dies natalis. It will focus on four Roman authors: Ovid’s, Tibullus, Horace’s, and Cicero’s descriptions of these components. The material will be examined from the theoretical viewpoint of religious agency, religious agent and religious identity with the interest to discuss the personal birthdays celebrations. The analysis is inspired by Kathryn Argetsinger´s article from 1992 where she at length analyzed the roman view on private birthdays celebrations for the first century BC and AD. The genius, liba and the meaning of the dies natalis can be argued to charge the birthday celebrations with the religiously meaning. The genius was a god that was often prayed to and presented with offering like liba during the birthday celebration. This led to a communication between the humans who participated and the supernatural genius who created a religious experience for the humans. The meaning celebrating a person’s dies natalis on the same date led to an identity on that day. When the person then celebrated his birthday and his genius on the same day a religious identity was created.

Teater och teologi: Kristet och judiskt rolltagande i Vladimir Sharovs roman Repetitsii2021Inngår i: Religion och Bibel. LXXVI-LXXVIII.: Nathan Söderblomsällskapets årsbok 2017-2019 / [ed] Leif Nordenstorm, Dobrichovice, 2021, s. 111-130-Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The article rises questions of how ideas of chosenness are presented in Vladimir Sharov’s novel The Rehearsals (Repititii) and how the various characters in the narrative understand their identities in relation to other religious groups. Starting from Sharov’s own statement that the history of Russia could be seen as a commentary to the Bible, the article examines how different religious groups are portrayed in the novel and how the groups are attributed with various roles, put against each other in gradually more and more grave conflicts, finally resulting in the main actors viewing the killing of the Other as necessary for fulfilling God’s eschatological plan. The article aims to show how, in the narrative, themes of chosenness, religious zealotry and expectance for an imminent End lead up to the killing of the actors playing the parts of the Jews, who, according to the narrative, need to be exterminated in order to hasten the End. Applying the term heterotopia, the article concludes that The Rehearsals illustrates, in condensed form, conflicts and tensions between Jewish and orthodox Christian theology and exegesis within Russian history, and how these tensions are most acute in historical periods which are particularly dramatic externally and/or internally. The novel begins and ends claiming that the Jewish nation ceased to exist with the boy Kobylin, who in 1939 miraculously survived the massacre that was aimed at killing all the Jews, but who was no longer a Jew when he left the site of the trauma, a metaphoric theme that is also central to the article.

    Abstract [en]

This article addresses the issue of teaching Judaism for students in the teacher-trainingprogramme and those training to become clergy in a Swedish milieu. A major challenge in thesecular post-Protestant setting is to pinpoint and challenge the negative presuppositions of Judaismas a religion of legalism, whereas the student’s own assumption is that she or he is neutral. Even ifthe older paradigms of anti-Jewish stereotypes are somewhat distant, there are further patterns ofthought which depict Judaism as a ‘strange’ and ‘legalistic’ religion. Students in the teacher-trainingprogramme for teaching religion in schools can in class react negatively to concepts like kosherslaughter, circumcision and the Shabbat lift. Even if the explanatory motives vary, there is nonethelessa tendency common to ordination students, relating to a Protestant notion of the Jewish Torah, commonly rendered as ‘Law’ or ‘legalism’. This notion of ‘the Law’ as a means of self-redemptioncan, it is argued in the article, be discerned specially among clergy students reading Pauline textsand theology. This analysis shows that both teacher-training and textbooks need to be updated inaccordance with modern research in order to refute older anti-Jewish patterns of thought. As forthe challenge posed by the simplistic labelling of both Judaism and Islam as religions of law, theimplementation of the teaching guidelines concerning everyday ‘lived religion’ enables and allowsthe teacher to better disclose Judaism, Christianity and Islam as piously organised living faiths ratherthan as being ruled by legalistic principles.

Hizbullah's Construction of National Identity: "We are in principle not like Others"2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to understand how national identity is discursively constructed by Hizbullah at a time of national crisis, and to shed light on its potential effects on the social world. The critical discourse analysis focuses on how difference and otherness are constructed on Hizbullah’s television channel Al-Manar. It illuminates Hizbullah’s discursive construal of a national in-group and an ‘enemy’ out-group, and identifies the main discourses that Hizbullah draws upon. The backdrop is the violent events in the Lebanese town of Arsal, erupting in early August 2014 and soon amounting to a national crisis. How Hizbullah, one of the main political actors in Lebanon and the region, constructs the world discursively does arguably have impact on the social world. The analysis identifies an order of discourse that on the one hand is permeated by pluralism and inclusion and on the other hand influenced by an exclusionary discourse connecting the out-group to terrorism. The author suggests that the Western discourse of ‘war on terrorism’ has been recontextualised by Hizbullah, and argues that there are reasons to pay close attention to the potentially harmful socially constructive effects of this discourse. Nevertheless, a cross-confessional national unity is simultaneously highlighted in Hizbullah’s discourse.

    Abstract [sv]

The Syrian Muslim Brotherhood has since the start of the Syrian uprising in March 2011 moved from a low-key position in exile to become one of the main actors in the political opposition. There appears to be a consensus among researchers today on the democratic commitment of the Syrian Brotherhood. However, ambiguity remains regarding its commitment towards gender equality, women’s rights and participation. This essay focuses on the gender discourse of the Syrian Brotherhood’s leadership, according to its policy-documents, from 2004 – 2013. By applying a critical discourse analysis, a movement from a more Islamist, exclusionary discourse in 2004 towards a more inclusive, feminist inspired discourse in 2013 becomes apparent. Nonetheless, traditional gender roles linger and more Islamist and pan-Arab, pan-Islamic discourses are not distant features. The movement of the gender discourse towards greater inclusion confirms claims made by democratic theorists on inclusion and moderation.

    Abstract [en]

This analysis aims to examinate, with a comparative method, how the religions of Judaism and Islam are portrayed within three Swedish textbooks from 1979, 1998 and 2015 for use in upper secondary school. The three curriculums for upper secondary school from 1970, 1994 and 2011, will be used as to determined how appropriate the contents are in the textbooks. The three textbooks have all been used at different times and places in the Swedish upper secondary school’s subject of Religionskunskap (Religious education). This paper has three research questions: (1) How does the textbooks depict Judaism and Islam, (2) how are the believers and practitioners displayed in the contents and (3) to what extent does the textbooks correlate to the curriculums. The analysis showed that there are great differences between each textbook and how detailed the depictions are about the religions. Some of the depictions were negative stereotypes which did not fit the guidelines within the responding curriculum.

    Abstract [en]

When viewed on the internet, the waterslides and pools at Amman Waves look deserted, but when paying a visit they are filled with children, women and men in various kinds of swim wear. At Amman Waves women’s swim wear fashion ranges from small bikinis to swim-suits that cover every part of a woman’s body except the face, hands and feet. In this article these differences in covering are discussed and categorized in relation to Islamic law. It is argued that this variation in swim wear also has relevance for European societies since it shows possibilities for negotiations (agreement) between traditional Islamic ideals and ideals in modern Western societies.

    Abstract [en]

We can note a varied use and attitudes to song and music in Islam. In the classroom of Sana, a primary school teacher of Islamic religious education in a Muslim school in Sweden, music is an important but not uncontested part of Islamic religious education. Sana uses different genres of music, ranging from Islamic hip-hop and pop to more traditional nasheed. The music supports themes discussed in the classroom but also gives variation to the education. It happens that children comment and say that the hip-hop and pop-music Sana plays is haram, forbidden. Sana seldom touches upon the notion of music as forbidden or unlawful in the classroom, but nevertheless it is visible in her choices of music and the way she presents the music for the children. Outside the classroom, in interviews with the researcher, Sana talks about the necessity of finding Islamic role models that attract the young, instead of “bearded old men” that might have interesting things to say but have neither “the looks nor the language” to attract young people. Sana’s use of music within Islamic religious education is discussed to seize the meanings associated with music and understand the educational choices Sana makes in relation to music. The paper is based on fieldwork that took place during 2005 and 2006.

    Abstract [en]

Grön islam: En komparativ innehållsanalys av islamisk miljöetik.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to pinpoint the main rudiments of Islamic-normative environmental ethics, and also to give an overview of its similarities and/or differences from secular-normative environmental ethics, as they can be interpreted in Islamic Declaration on Global Climate Change, and in Declaration on Ethical Principles in Relation to Climate Change. As a theoretical framework, the study uses specifically selected features of Mikael Stenmark’s Miljöetik och miljövård, and of Ibrahim Özdemir’s The Ethical Dimension of Human Attitude Towards Nature: a Muslim Perspective. The material has been divided into the following four categories: Values, Humanity, Lifestyle, and Relations. The material has then been analyzed by using a qualitative content analysis. The results of the study show that the Islamic- and the secular-normative environmental ethics share many valuational standpoints, but their differences stem from what they use as the source to legitimize their ethics. The secular environmental ethics puts humanity in the center, whereas the Islamic environmental ethics places God in the center.

Teologiska fakulteten vid Uppsala universitet 1916–2000: Historiska studier2021Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

The Performative Structure: Ritualizing the Pyramid of Pepy I2018Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Billing investigates the ancient Egyptian pyramid complex as a performative structure, ritualized through the operative faculty inherent in monumental architecture, text, and image. The main body of research is given over to an analysis of the Pyramid Texts found in the pyramid of king Pepy I of the Sixth Dynasty (ca 2300 BCE). It is demonstrated that the texts were distributed on distinct space-bound thematic and ritual levels in order to perpetuate a cultic activity from which the lord of the tomb could be transformed by moving through the different chambers and corridors towards the exit. Just as the decoration program of the mortuary temple once delineated the ritual and ideological structure of the royal mortuary cult, the corpus of texts distributed in the pyramid provided a monumentalized performative structure that effectuated the perennial rebirth for its owner.

"I detta sibiriska Babel": – Coping och religiös föreställningsvärld hos svenska soldater i kriget mot Ryssland 1707-17212014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to study diaries and letters from Swedish soldiers during the Great Nordic War, more specifically those written during the campaign 1707-1721 against Russia, in search of religious coping and religious parables. The theoretic framework is evolved around Kenneth Pargament’s theory about religious coping, and Ana-Maria Rizzuto’s theory about object relations. The method used can be described as hermeneutic.

    The questions at hand were:

    - How did Swedish soldiers during the war against Russia relate to God, and express image of God and religious concepts?

    - Did the soldiers express themselves in terms of spiritual coping and in that case to what extent?

The conclusions were that the soldiers used religious coping as a method of survival. They used all methods as stated by Pargament, except the method that involves cooperation with God, unless you count being God’s humble servant as a way of cooperation.Several diaries features songs and poems and many expresses prayers and faith in God. The soldiers express themselves with parables to the Old Testament, for ex-ample to the Babylonian captivity. The language of the diaries changes after the defeat of Poltava 1709, to a richer one full of religious parables.

Keywords: Spiritual coping, soldiers, Great Nordic War, Charles the XII, Kenneth Pargament.
