    Abstract [en]

In this paper the diagnostic process of bacterial tonsillitis at two Swedish health centres is described and analysed as to how this disease comes into being, or how it is enacted. The concept of enactment implies that disease is constituted in, and through, relational practises involving human and non-human elements. The study is based on interviews with nurses and doctors as well as field observations from the health centres. In the analysis it becomes apparent that different and sometimes conflicting enactments of tonsillitis appear in medical practices, depending on the organization of relations between different elements. It is concluded that diagnostic agency is created in relations between both humans and non-humans, and who and what is given diagnostic agency is changeable depending on the relations at hand. The diagnostic process of tonsillitis shows how the most mundane medical diagnoses involves a number of complex relations, that stretches beyond categories such as social and medical.

    Abstract [en]

This article addresses the issue that even though we can witness a change in attitudes and practices towards animals in contemporary western society, main stream sociology has been reluctant to treat research on human–animal relations seriously. The point made is that such research should be of great interest, not just for empirical reasons, but also because human–animal interaction challenges some of our most common sociological concepts and traditions. With the help of some illustrative examples from the zoological park of Slottsskogen, Göteborg, I review some new currents from the field of the sociology of human–animal relations and investigate such challenges with regards to concepts like interaction, personification and social identity. Some less common concepts, derived from the same research field, such as anima urbis, speciesism and significant otherness, also get introduced. The article concludes that main stream sociology could learn a lot from this sub-field, and I especially draw on symbolic interactionism, urban research and feminism to make that claim.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Taking Sweden into the future – Bio-objectification of new medical technology

In this article, we analyze how contemporary discursive silences around new biotechnologiessuch as cybrids and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), have been enabled by earlier policyprocesses in the area, e.g. boundary work around what is human and non-human, livingand non-living, subject and object. The analysis of policy processes around xenotransplantationsand the use of human embryonic stem cells, shows that the stem cells’ and xenografts’“bio-identities” become stabilized through high expectations for the future, a lack of therapeuticpossibilities and struggles over definitions of life. The policy processes around humanembryonic stem cells and organs from other animals, are characterized by a normalizationof certain understandings of ”life”, trust in scientific progress and it’s national financial potentialsand a categorization of criticism as irrational. Through these “bio-objectificationprocesses”, debate and decision making has been moved from a political and public contextinto ethical committees and research funding bodies. The article concludes by discussingconsequences of this political non-handling of biomedical technologies and how these bioobjectscould be re-politicized.

    Abstract [en]

"The blind spot:Mind, body or matter". Taking its startingpoint in an acclaimed work by Nick Crossley, where he argues for a "non-reductive" materialism, the author tries to show that Crossley like many others in his attempt to steer free of "idealism", contrary to his stated aims ends precisely in material reductionism. By means of an illustration taken from Merleau-Ponty, where it according to Crossley is neither necessary nor possible to isolate a "mind-content", an "inner intention" etc. he draws his (erroneous) conclusion about the fundamental materialism. He does not even consider the possibility that the illustration rather reveals matter as intrinsically "knowing" or "knowing" as embodied among other things in forms which are designated "material", thus collapsing the very dualist distinction which is the starting point. Since to talk about a situation, present, remembered, imagined presupposes meaning and a knowing of a whole situation, always arbitrarily delimited, which can and need not be reduced to the inner of some separate individual observer or "knower" but rather signals an unlimited "space" of knowing(ness) which allows for different presentation of reality, distinctions, such as that between matter and mind, matter and knowing. The "being" of a situation is thus confused with the "words" that are "analytically" used to single out this or that, "making up" the relative level. A common view of "mind" inspired by G.H.Mead is critisized in the same way as based both on an understanding of interaction that intially presupposes a split between mind and matter, then projecting that backwards assuming that "mind" appeared somewhere along the line, as were it some kind of gaseous substance. This view consequently has in tow a confusion of the question how "mind", "knowing" or "knowingness" ever appeared in "evolutionary" history with the question how a particular self-identity or self-image is created. However, the author argues, Meadian theory does not allow for an explanation of mind in general as suddenly arising out of matter, but does if not to its explicit intention by its logic rather presuppose mind or "knowing" as an everpresent "aspect" of reality. It is further argued that the assumption of an unreducible "knowingness" characterizing "reality" by no means commits us to a "theoretical" idealism - that means another confusion of levels quite common in social theorizing about dualism. It is at last asked why dualism is constantly brought up as a problem in social science given some very common declarations of social scientists that their task or ambition is not to present views that encompass the whole, but rather to describe, interpret and explain parts or aspects of (social) reality. The tendency to worry about "the problem of dualism", i e between individual and society, agent and structure etc. is also strange both considering the widespread methodological view that theoretical distinctions and concepts do not "mirror" reality "as it is" but rather are conceptual tools more or less useful for the elucidation of different aspects of reality also dependent on the particual research tasks. Add to this the postmodern doxa of "difference" as basic to reality. Could it be that the constant recurrence of "the problem of dualism" within social science in direct opposition to the explicit disavowal of such goals signals an unacknowledged, "indecent" drive away from "alienation" towards a theoretical wholeness which also spells existential? This implicitness is then contrasted with the view of certain "eastern traditions" where "the problem of dualism" from the start is tackled not as a theoretical problem, but explicitly as a deep existential issue, where the root-cause of suffering is seen as basically embodied in the self/world, me/other split, that is the identification and reification of a certain identification with a presumed separate self, which in its turn branches off in a myriad of other seemingly unavoidable dualisms. In this view dualism is a lived problem to be solved in practice -a (dis)solution which in its turn may dissolve the concern with dualism as a theoretical problem. Considered as a theoretical problem it probably remains just that: A disturbing, constantly recurring theoretical problem unresolvable on its own terms.

    Abstract [en]

While research show that individuals of foreign background are being discriminated against and stigmatized in Sweden, an increasing number of them still choose higher education and also show a tendency towards choosing an elite education. In this article, I examine if there is a link between experiences of discrimination and the choice of elite education. The study is based upon semi-structured interviews with five female and five male law students of Middle Eastern background. The findings show that discrimination, either against the students or their parents, has led to a high study motivation where the choice of elite education can be understood as an anti-discrimination strategy. Other anti-discrimination strategies are to resist a victim mentality and to destigmatize by challenging stereotypes. These anti-discrimination strategies can be understood as strategies for recognition, that is, striving for equality by being ascribed a positive status.

    Abstract [en]

This article examines how older people make sense of their situation in calls to a helpline a few months into the Covid-19 pandemic. By drawing on the sociology of everyday life to analyse callers’ various understandings of the crisis, the article nuances current knowledge about older people’s situation. The thematic analysis shows that the callers make sense of the crisis linked to social relations on a personal, anonymous, and abstract level. The callers’ responses to challenges to their everyday routines – adjustment or critical evaluation – are connected to different approaches to trust: basic trust in a shared social reality with someone or regulating trust in a set of norms independent from that other. Whereas the calls demonstrate very few positive adjustments in personal relations, they show that anonymous and abstract relations serve as important resources for both maintaining and re-evaluating everyday life during a crisis. Although older people’s lack of secure personal relations during the pandemic points to vulnerability, their resourcefulness is apparent in their active engagement in important anonymous and abstract relations.

    Abstract [en]

Covid-19 as a health crisis has affected all spheres of private and public life, both nationally and internationally, locally and globally. This article aims to contribute knowledge about people's levels of worry during the pandemic's first phase in Sweden.Worry is examined in relation to sociodemographic background, social capital, and judgements concerning potential threats and the national measures implemented. The theoretical framework utilized resides upon concepts and theories of worry and social capital. The data was collected in Sweden in April and May 2020 through an online survey of experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic.Multiple regression analysis and multiple correspondence analysis revealed that higher levels of worry were closely associated both with the judgement that the national measures implemented were not correct, and with the perception that Covid-19 as an illness comprised a greater threat than its financial and social consequences. These factors were also related to advanced age, chronic illness, and lower levels of social capital. Our findings point to the need for further sociological research - both quantitative and qualitative - concerning the pandemic's various consequences in everyday life.

    Abstract [en]

Multilingualism in a globalized society: The minority language as a future resource In this article the author investigates how the globalization of society is used as a reference in the discussion of future opportunities among minority language speaking youths in Sweden. A spatial typology of four different types of societies are constructed, the national, the multicultural, the diasporic and the transnational society, all giving the expression of different levels of globalization. These are used as layers of reference put upon the empirical data, functioning as a raster on a screen. The result is a pattern of expressions in three societal dimensions, the economic, the social and the cultural dimension. The findings of the investigation show that the minority language as a future resource of opportunities is anchored in all four societal types and in all three dimensions. In the empirical data (the youths interviewed) the ability of anchoring (finding stories, opportunities etc.) is less frequent when it comes to the diasporic and the transnational as a foundation for opportunity and more frequent when it comes to the national and the multicultural.

    Abstract [en]

    Social reproduction in Värmland, Sweden

This study uses the 2014 SOM-survey of the Swedish region of Värmland (n = 1420) to study the ways in which social reproduction is expressed in a regional setting. Following the sociology of Bourdieu the study presents statistically significant results that highlight that a.) class habitus shapes the type of home one creates for oneself and b.) one’s level of education, and that c.) the orientation towards the ”legitimate” culture is particularly pronounced among those with relatively high volumes of economic and cultural capital and finally that d.) a regional elite is consecrated in the cultural and urban center of the region. Although the sociological explanation to ”why we do what we do” is not the only one, this study shows that it is an important one. Class, expressed as class habitus and volume of economic and cultural capital, continues to shape peoples’ life choices and their orientations in the social world.

    Abstract [en]

The article examines temporal governing in the Swedish asylum bureaucracy through a qualitative analysis of the case files of ten asylum-seeking families. The documents studied include more than 5,000 pages of asylum investigation protocols, decisions, court judgments, certificates, appeals, submissions, personal letters, memos, and other material. The study focuses on decisions made by the Swedish Migration Agency and the oral investigations documented by the agency's officers. Three inherent and overlapping contradictions related to the temporal governance of the Migration Agency are identified: 1) migration officials insist that asylum seekers provide a strict chronological narrative, whereas what they have lived through has been chaotic, 2) migration officials rush asylum seekers through the asylum process, but the applicant is then subjected to a stressful period of prolonged waiting, and 3) migration officials discount any speculation by asylum seekers when they explain why they are seeking protection, although speculation is unavoidable when conveying fears for the future. The contradictions affect the procedure for judging the asylum claim as well as the outcome of the assessment. The article also highlights consequences of time management paradoxes for asylum seekers and on the societal level in general

    Abstract [en]

perspectives everyday Previous research has demonstrated that many children experience racism in the Swedish school system, a public institution that formally aims to combat all forms of discrimination. The question posed in this article is how racism can endure despite the school system's anti-racist agenda. Everyday racism is examined from children's perspectives, based upon eight focus groups with primary school pupils and a group of 11-year-old co-researchers who contributed to the interview planning and data analysis. The focus group discussions show that while everyday racism is typically concealed, invisible to teachers and other adults, racial microaggressions are nevertheless often detected by children themselves. The analysis reveals that children have the intention to speak up against everyday racism, but lack the necessary support and protection from adults. The article concludes that to fight racism in the Swedish school environment, adults must learn how everyday racism operates and in that learning process actively consult children for their perspectives.

    Abstract [en]

Consensus and personified conflicts: Representations of elderly care issues in Swedish newspapers Elderly care issues are commonly framed in public discourse. In mass media the representations of such issues are influenced by media logic. The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyse how elderly care issues were represented in three Swedish newspapers during the first half of 2007. How were the problems characterized? How were different actors characterized and which roles were they assigned? How are conflicts of interests described? Finally, we aim to discuss how media contribute to an understanding of the complexity of elderly care as a whole. Taken together, the articles do not provide a coherent picture. However, costs, quality of care and demographic issues were common themes. The elderly were commonly represented in personal narratives about. problems that occurred when they needed elderly care. The elderly in the future are projected as more active and demanding than the elderly today. The care workers were active voices in discussions about working conditions, but absent in discussions about their education and professional identity, which was an issue commonly advocated by politicians. Many issues were represented as conflicts between the individual elderly and the care system or between care workers and their employers. More elaborated discussions about how to prioritize between different needs and demands were rare. This can be seen as examples of how the media tends to use personification, simplification and polarization as means to tell interesting stories.

Dokumentationens roll för klientskapande processer i äldreinriktat socialt arbete: Spelar utlandsfödd bakgrund, kön och ålder någon roll?2021Inngår i: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, E-ISSN 2002-066X, Vol. 58, nr 3, s. 287-310Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [sv]

The practice of bodily differentiation: Overweight and internet dating on the market of intimacy2010Inngår i: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, E-ISSN 2002-066X, Vol. 47, nr 1, s. 5-28Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The practice of bodily differentiation: Overweight and internet dating on the market of intimacy With the emergence of Internet dating, the procedure for choosing a partner has been radically changed. Given the initial invisibility of the body when Internet dating, one might presume that looks become less important when searching for partners online. Unfortunately, this is far from the truth. Based on twelve interviews with Internet daters of which six define themselves as overweight, the reproduction of bodily distinction in both mediated and direct communication is here being studied. A recurrent theme among the interviewees is the disappointment of the first date face to face. Ironically the importance of looks (or bodily capital) appears to be even more vital when dating on Internet than when building relationships "in real life". Besides the disappointment of the first date in real life, the obese women in this study could also gather information of their value on the market of intimacy through being met by serious harassments and in exclusively being treated as sexual objects. Despite its strong association with the physical body, bodily capital can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from other forms of capital. From this point of view, the possibility of less repressive forms of intimacy is discussed.

    Abstract [en]

Displacement in the making. Renoviction as cultural traumaBased on interviews with tenants in an area facing eviction following forced renovation, this study presents an analysis of the reactions and forms of resistance that arise among residents in the early phase of a renovation process. The concepts of cultural trauma, resistance and action repertoires are used in the analysis to understand the processes that residents in renovation areas have to face and how their collective self-image and strategies for action change during these. We argue that the exceptionally high trust in Sweden, based on the Swedish welfare state and housing policy, results in traumatic experiences among tenants when facing forced renovation. In this study, we respond to questions about how traumatic experiences are expressed, what causes are identified by the tenants, and what forms of resistance emerge among tenants who face costly renovations. We hereby demonstrate how the experienced cultural trauma can be transformed into individual and collective resistance actions.

    Abstract [en]

Are forgiveness and reconciliation left to the theologians to define or can these concepts also be genuine concepts in sociology? In spite of the fact that sociology and social psychology have a lot of research about relationship, interaction and groups, there is not much research about forgiveness and reconciliation. This article presents the understanding of how relations can be revived, if once broken, if using these conceptions. The discussion also includes the concepts of shame and guilt and even confidence, particularly in relations where you find victim and perpetrator. The discussion is developed in a perspective of symbolic interactionism with examples from sociological research about men's violence against women and adults, especially fathers, abuse to their daughters. In this article the perpetrator feels guilt and the victim shame and the feeling of guilt makes the perpetrator to ask for forgiveness. When hate and hard feelings have come to an end, the reconciliation can occur as a consequence of the forgiveness.
