    Abstract [en]

    This thesis was performed at SverigeGrepen AB. SverigeGrepen is a company that hasone product on the market; a manure fork that is designed to be used for mucking inshavings or peat. The aim of this thesis was to develop a new manure fork that isadapted to be used in straw.

    The development started with a pilot study where experience of mucking wascollected to be able to understand what and why certain characteristics are importantfor the function and use of the manure fork.

    A basic concept was developed where the main function was fulfilled, which meantthat a separation between dung and straw could be performed in a way that wasbeneficial for the user.

    The work resulted in four concepts of how a manure fork could be used in the strawthat can be designed and constructed. The conclusion that the work gave was that allconcepts met the main requirements required by a manure fork to use in straw.However, concept four provides a good visual impression, while its benefits areassumed to be important qualities.

    Abstract [en]

    The study has investigated a group of 20 people in one of Sweden's major authorities. The group was divided into three teams and worked as Administrative Officers. The study investigated the meeting decision process which, according to a preliminary study, proved to take more time and energy than necessary. The purpose was to map the current situation, make suggestions for improvement and create a theoretical implementation plan for improvement. The aim of the study was to provide solutions for a more effective and enjoyable meeting decision process for all parts. Theories were chosen based on the nature of the study - a qualitative improvement study which the Cornerstone model was in the center. The greatest focus was on group development, communication, processes, change and leadership. The method was a qualitative study with an inductive approach. The study followed the PDSA and conducted field research through observation supplemented with document collection and SPGR survey. The result showed three teams of different degrees of maturity and a process that had improvement opportunities in four areas; Structure, Roles, Process and Meeting Climate. The conclusion was to implement improvements in one area at a time, start with the Role area and create structure to increased participation and efficiency. The change would be carried out by the employees themselves with the support of the immediate manager. If the change become successful, the Cornerstone model reach its purpose and a more efficient and funeral meeting decision-making process is created for everyone. When that happens - meetings will give energy instead of taking energy.

    Abstract [en]

    This study investigates the multisided platform business model this implies that there is a requirement for several stakeholders to be active dependently on each other to obtain value from such a business model. The study uses qualitative interviews to investigate some of a company’s stakeholders and these interviews are coded and analyzed using Osterwalder’s Value Proposition Canvas. The company that is the basis for the interview is called Tillögur AB and the product evaluated was their application named Epic Eats. There is an underlying problem for fast expanding, start-up companies to properly evaluate their potential market and thereby they may try to focus on a market segment which sees no direct value in the offerings of the goods and services of the company and as such are unwilling to pay for such a product. Using the tool of Value Proposition Canvas, each stakeholders' pains, gains, and jobs are evaluated against the pain relievers, gain creators and products and services that Epic Eats hopes to deliver. The result of the study shows that the VPC helps analyze a stakeholder’s interests but yields no conclusive evidence for a company’s business model to be valid or not. Furthermore, the results show that we should recommend to Epic Eats to focus on their consumer market to be their paying customer for their specific business model as they derive most value from their product. This conclusion is done using deductive reasoning on the part of the analysts.

    The industry has during the past decades been changing towardsdigitalization at a rapid pace, adapting new frameworks and digitalsolutions, with the thrive to improve efficiency, and output quality.This thesis covers how a hyped industry concept, digital twin, incontext of smart manufacturing, could be applied in this changingclimate. Focus is put on what strategies a Product LifecycleManagement (PLM) principal could adapt when approaching theutilization of digital twins, in a customer setting. The research project, using a qualitative exploration format,incorporated a thorough review of journal articles and standards,interconnected with conducted interviews with industry experts, inorder to develop two strategies on how to approach the conceptof digital twins. The two-part strategies were formed on the basis of Mintzberg(1978) emergent and deliberate strategies. The former, consisted ofIDEF0 function modeling diagramming, where a digital twin businessprocess was portrayed, based on the literature review and interviewdata. The latter, approached the digital twin application challenge ina theoretical manner, based on the concept’s high risk anduncertainty, incorporating organizational structure theory andinnovation theory. The two strategies showed two different pathsto approach the digital twin phenomena and how to, boththeoretically and practically, adapt digital twins in a customer setting.

    Abstract [en]

    In this study we have examined the possible quality standards and methods for applications with service workshops in the forest industry. The purpose of the methods presented here was to start the work of standarardising the maintenance service in the industry and be of use for service providers in their quality effort.

    The methods we used to accomplish the study were interviews and field visits together with a comprehensive literature research. Our results are presented in the form of four solution proposals: a standard based on existing SIS standards for terminology and key indicators, checklists that are filled in by mechanics with customer participation, the construction of a instructions database, and the implementation of the method 5s.

    We believe our suggestions can help the service providers in the four problem areas that we have identified: long term strategy, documentation, recruitment of competent technicians, and standard procedures in their operations. These improvements will be beneficial for both the service provider and the customer.

    Abstract [en]

    Today, in a situation where global requirements of sustainability are high, and where sustainability and energy use has received renewed interest because of the Great East Japan Earthquake, we address one of the sustainability efforts that Japanese companies are making - namely Green IT. Basically, Green IT means both to reduce environmental impact by using IT, and to reduce the environmental impact of IT as such. In the U.S. and Europe, Green IT is gaining speed, but might it be the case that Japan is lagging behind? In this presentation, we present the current state of Green IT in Japan and situate it in a global context. We also discuss its importance for the future.

    Markvibratorer används för att packa ihop marken och stabilisera underlaget för att öka dess bärighet vid byggnationer av till exempel vägar eller hus. Företaget Steelwrist har som affärside att tillverka tillbehör som effektiviserar användandet av grävmaskiner. I deras produktprogram ingår en maskinburen markvibrator. Som ett steg att göra vibratorn mer sofistikerad vill företaget ta fram koncept för att kunna variera vibrationskraften, en funktion som idag saknas. Målet med arbetet som redovisas i denna rapport är att ta fram en lösning på hur man kan variera kraften i en befintlig markvibrator av typen Steelwrist HC60 under drift.

    Inom ramen för detta examensarbete har en förundersökning gjorts för att kartlägga  vad som används idag och två intressanta lösningar presenteras i rapporten. Vidare redovisas resultaten av en påföljande konceptgenerering som gav upphov till flertalet idéer som senare presenterades för företagets utvecklingsavdelning. I samband med detta möte togs beslut om att konstruera ett av förslagen som huvudkoncept och att utreda en annan ide som alternativt koncept.

    I denna rapport redovisas processen med konstruktionsarbetet som utförts med datorstödd design i form av CAD-programmet Solidworks. Resultat presenteras av två framtagna koncept som båda uppfyller kravspecifikationen. Några förenklade beräkningar av krafterna som systemet utsätts för är utförda, samt FEM-analyser som bekräftar att dimensionerna i konstruktionerna är tillräckliga. I en efterföljande analys och diskussion utvärderas resultaten samt ges förslag på fortsatt arbete.

    At the Division of Electricity at Uppsala university a project isconducted to develop a smaller wind turbine for conditions in theAntarctica. This is a part of a larger, international researchproject in the field of particle physics known as the Ariannaexperiment. The project consists of developing and installing avertical axle wind turbine of screwed Savonius type. A prototypeof this has been manufactured and installed 2016 in Antarctica forinitial testing and measurement.Wind turbines are subjected to complex and varied loads from windand rotation which gives rise to cyclical strain. The rotor bladesare particularly vulnerable, which imposes high material andconstruction requirements to avoid fatigue and failure, whichoften is caused by vibrations and oscillations. Vibrations can becharacterized in terms of the natural frequencies witch in shortmeans that the system, at specific frequencies, tend to oscillatewith increasing amplitude and at worst, resonate if these areexcited. How a complex design will behave by external periodicinterference is complicated to calculate analytically. Naturalfrequencies are therefore most often calculated using FEM-methodsand computer simulations.The aim of this thesis is to study how oscillating forces interactwith the natural frequencies and rotational loads for a specificSavonius wind turbine. How these are influenced by engineering,design and material selection. The goal is to draw conclusionsabout design and possible materials selection to avoid unnecessaryvibrations. Without this analysis, there is a risk of increasedwear and damage to the structure.The project includes such analysis of two different sizes of theSavonius turbine. A small 200x400 mm and a larger 1000x2000 mm.To understand the problem, a preliminary study of basic harmonicoscillation, strength of materials and of the existing prototypewas made. Following a requirement specification, somedelimitations were made so that the simulations would not be tooextensive. Subsequently, a minor design work was done to obtain 13different configurations of the turbine for simulation using FEM-methods.The result showed that none of the turbines rotational frequenciesis close to the turbine’s natural frequencies. However, accountmust be taken of cogging frequencies in the generator. These arewithin the range of the design's natural frequencies.All simulations of centrifugal force found that there isrelatively little tension at the selected maximum speed of 660 and132 revolutions per minute. However, as the results showed thatthe plates which are mounted between the rotor blades to providestability, creates greater stresses in the structure than thosewithout. Two proposals for the configuration of turbines have beenpresented in the report.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis describes the universalization, improvement and further development of a

    compact crane support frame for flatbed trucks. The work has been conducted at El

    och Fordonsteknik AB (henceforth EFAB) in Uppsala.

    The aim of the work has been to shorten the assembly time of the product. By doing

    so, the product can be kept on shelf, which in turn results in shorter lead time. This

    has been done by universalizing the support frame to be compatible with most of the

    chassis EFAB works with. Additionally, the entire construction has been made lighter,

    which will make it a more attractive choice for customers.

    A pre-study was conducted and information was gathered internally, as well as

    externally, in order to ascertain that no limitation or possibility was overlooked

    during the course of the project.

    One such limitation has been the geometry of the truck bed that the support frame

    shall be compatible with. This has set the focus of the project more towards further

    developing and improving the already existing product rather than developing a brand

    new one. The project has resulted in a compact crane support frame that fits eight

    different chassis and is 22 kg lighter than its predecessor. The assembly time has been

    approximated to 60 % of that of the original product.

    No prototype test has been conducted due to the lack of a suitable vehicle and time.

    However, theoretical comparisons done through the use of 3D CAD and FEA suggest

    that the new support frame is a worthy replacement for the previous one.

    Product structure modeling for ETO system product considering the product lifecycle: A case study of ABB Mine Hoist2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    In order to gain competitive advantages in markets, companies have provided a variety of customized products to satisfy customer-specific requirements, leading to not only a large amount of product data but also high cost, long lead-time and complexity of quality control. Efficient product data management throughout the product lifecycle has become increasingly crucial, of which product structure management is regarded as the most important constituent. 

    The study took ABB Mine Hoist system as a case to investigate how to construct a generic product structure model fit for engineer-to-order system offerings with the consideration of their sales-delivery product lifecycle. The aim of the model is to facilitate the product-related information sharing and reuse across a company, and the integration of different business operations throughout the entire product lifecycle as well.

    Based on the current situation analysis of product data management on ABB Mine Hoist, three major issues were identified which need to be addressed in the formulation of a generic structure model: namely the integration of requirements of multiple disciplines; the consistency of product information throughout the product lifecycle; and the constant update of product repository.

    Through illustrating the formulation of ABB Mine Hoist generic structure model, the method of how to construct a generic product structure model for engineer-to-order system product was presented. The model was achieved by applying the framework of the step-based product model and was regarded as a result of integrating domain-specific requirements. The adaptive generic product structure model was then employed to display the role of this generic model in the different phases of a sales-delivery lifecycle.

    The model could serve as a “master concept” to transfer common product information in the product lifecycle. It’s expected to benefit the business of engineer-to-order system product through improving the integration of different disciplines, enhancing information exchange and reuse. It could also provide an abstract and conceptual basis for potential product repository to reinforce data consistency and completeness.

    Abstract [en]

    Internet of Things (IoT) means that physical objects will be able to interact and communicate via embedded systems. This will lead to a distributed network of devices that can communicate with both humans and each other. One application area is in improving supply chain management. The goal in supply chains is to move a product or a service from the producer to the customer as efficient as possible. Implementation of IoT will have many benefits but it also raises security issues that can affect integrity, security and privacy for both individuals and companies.

    In 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto created bitcoin and more importantly, blockchain. Blockchain is a ledger of facts, data is not stored in only one network with a common processor, but it is distributed among all the clients on the network. This technology may be a solution to some problems that IoT are facing.

    This paper looks into up to date research of blockchain and IoT with the purpose to study blockchain as a potential solution to secure IoT data management within supply chains. Both blockchain and IoT are relatively new research areas with little existing research, which support our use of a qualitative inductive method. Semi-structured interviews, which will be further explained in the methodology section, have been conducted with people working within the fields of blockchain, IoT and supply chain.

    The result indicates that blockchain can be used to secure data management within any given supply chain that uses IoT technology, but blockchain should be seen as a tool, and not as a complete solution. Many of the security issues within IoT are related to the devices and blockchain will not be able to provide a solution to these problems. Blockchain can however be used for handling information, securing identities, traceability of goods, transactions being made without human interaction, automated storage management and time stamped actions to name some examples. There are still barriers to make these benefits work in reality but there is a lot of research currently on-going, trying to make it happen.

    Utvecklingen av motorstyrsystem på Scania CV AB är en komplicerad process där hård- och mjukvara kombineras i en färdig enhet för användning i de lastbilar som företaget producerar. Styrsystemet består bland annat av en datasats med en mängd parametrar som styr olika typer av funktionalitet. Parametrarna måste vid utvecklingen av en ny motor först kalibreras med korrekta värden och därefter måste dessa värden granskas för att kvaliteten på produkten ska kunna säkerställas. I dagsläget saknas ett standardiserat arbetssätt för hur kalibrering och granskning ska gå till på de grupper som är inblandade.

    Studien syftade till att kartlägga hur arbetet med kalibrering och granskning går till samt att om möjligt utveckla denna arbetsprocess för att uppnå en högre grad av kvalitetssäkring. Vad gäller processkartläggningen förekommer både skillnader och likheter mellan de, i processen, inblandade grupperna. Ett antal positiva rutiner och arbetsmetoder kunde urskiljas och dessa föreslås i den mån det är möjligt spridas i hela processflödet. Bland dessa finns exempelvis användandet av en sektionsövergripande roll med ansvar för granskningsarbetet, återkommande gruppgranskningar och noggrann dokumentation.

    Ett antal, i kalibrerings- och granskningsprocessen, inneboende problem har också identifierats. Med utgångspunkt i teori kring lean produktutveckling har förslag på förändringar i verksamheten som kan hantera dessa problem tagits fram. Sammanfattningsvis kan det konstateras att kalibrerings- och granskningsprocessen i många avseenden redan bedrivs utifrån LPS principerna. Det finns emellertid en del ändringar som ytterligare skulle kunna förbättra processerna och göra dessa mer lean, vilket också skulle bidra till kvalitetssäkring av slutprodukten.

    The Smart Grids development is driven by forces concerning safe electric

    transmission done in an energy efficient way. Vattenfall Eldistribution AB has a vision

    to transform their electricity network into Smart Grids. To invest in Smart Grids they

    have a need to show their customers what advantages they will get from the

    development. This led to the formulation of this dissertation project where the aim is

    to identify products and services related to Smart Grids that will increase the

    customer satisfaction for Vattenfall Eldistributions private customers.

    The project started with a mapping of existing products and services on the Swedish

    electricity market. From the mapping several development possibilities for Vattenfall

    Eldistribution were identified. Two of these development possibilities where analyzed

    more deeply as they seemed to have a grate possibility to fulfil the aim of the project.

    The two services that where studied more closely were follow-up on new electricity

    connections and an electricity usage report. The two services where analyzed from a

    market, organisation and strategy perspective.

    The findings from this study show that Vattenfall Eldistribution should introduce an

    electricity usage report for their private customers and that a pilot project should be

    carried out for follow-up on new electricity connections.

    Background

    Antibiotic innovation has dwindled to dangerously low levels in the past 30 years. Since resistance continues to evolve, this innovation deficit can have perilous consequences on patients. A number of new incentives have been suggested to stimulate greater antibacterial drug innovation. To design effective solutions, a greater understanding is needed of actual antibiotic discovery and development costs and timelines. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) undertake most discovery and early phase development for antibiotics and other drugs. This paper attempts to gather a better understanding of SMEs’ targets, costs, and durations related to discovery and early phase development of antibacterial therapies.

    Methods

    DRIVE-AB, a project focused on developing new economic incentives to stimulate antibacterial innovation, held a European stakeholder meeting in February 2015. All SMEs invited to this meeting (n = 44) were subsequently sent a survey to gather more data regarding their areas of activity, completed and expected development costs and timelines, and business models.

    Results

    Twenty-five companies responded to the survey. Respondents were primarily small companies each focusing on developing 1 to 3 new antibiotics, focused on pathogens of public health importance. Most have not yet completed any clinical trials. They have reported ranges of discovery and development out-of-pocket costs that appear to be less expensive than other studies of general pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) costs. The duration ranges reported for completing each phase of R&D are highly variable when compared to previously published general pharmaceutical innovation average durations. However, our sample population is small and may not be fully representative of all relevant antibiotic SMEs.

    Conclusions

    The data collected by this study provide important insights and estimates about R&D in European SMEs focusing on antibiotics, which can be combined with other data to design incentives to stimulate antibacterial innovation. The variation implies that costs and durations are difficult to generalize due to the unique characteristics of each antibiotic project and depend on individual business strategies and circumstances.

    When a hydraulic cylinder is about tobe repaired it needs to bedisassembled. Because hydrauliccylinders usually work in dirtyenvironments and are heavilyworn some types of cylinders arealmost impossible to disassemble.Today the disassemble is made by hand,which means extra work for themechanics. In order to facilitate thedismantling of this type of cylindersa machine is to be developed for thispurpose and this is where this thesisbegins.

    The thesis has been organized in threephases: Literature study in whichfacts and theories are acquired.Concept generation in which differentconcepts, calculations, and solutionswere identified and selected. Thedesign phase where all the differentconcepts of components were assembledand simulated in SolidWorks. Similarstructures have also been studied inorder to identify necessary functions.

    The thesis resulted in a structurewhich is believed to meet therequirements. The design is flexiblein adjustment and easy to modify fordifferent tools. The construction issuitable for using the engine packageand 3-jaw chuck that Dione previouslypurchased.

    Abstract [en]

    This degree project was performed at Sherwin-Williams in Märsta, Sweden over a period of ten weeks. The purpose of the work was to optimize the manufacturing process of heavy fillers due to a problem with achieving consistent quality. An optimization of the process would lead to a larger produced volume and thus increased sales. This would also help provide a better insight in all the parts of the manufacturing process. The company uses an index called OTMIS that describes how many of the products that are approved in the quality control directly after being manufactured. A higher OTMIS-index would result in a lowered total process time as it would lead to fewer time-consuming adjustments of non-approved filler batches.

    The work is based on a literature study and lectures in filler production to gain a basic understanding of how the production works. Daily observations of the manufacturing process led to the design of experiments being made for own laboratory tests. The purpose of these tests was to identify the parameters that had the greatest impact on the properties of the filler and how these should be controlled.

    Using the MODDE software, the key variables and their impact on the filler’s final quality and utility could be found and optimized. The time between the completion of the manufacturing process and the quality control, and how much variation there was in the amount of filling material used to give the filler the correct rheology proved to have the greatest impact on the results. After developing an analysis of possible sources of errors and how much they affected the result, a plan of solutions was submitted for continued improvement work. The proposals in this plan focus on lowering the average process time by introducing new routines for control, changing the manufacturing process as per the filling material’s effect, improved documentation of the manufacturing process and striving for a longer term planning process prior to manufacturing.

    The International Energy Agency has stated that it is more sustainable to improve the energy efficiency of already existing buildings than increasing the national energy production to provide inefficient buildings with even more energy, which would result in that an increased amount of resources required to power the existing energy inefficient building stock. Taken into consideration that buildings in Sweden consume about 40% of Sweden’s final energy consumption and count for about 36% of the total greenhouse gas emissions it becomes evident that in order to decrease Sweden’s carbon foot print, it is important to understand real estate investors decision-making process. The aspiration is to provide stakeholders both on a micro and macro level with a better understanding of the real estate investors decision making process. This will enable companies (micro level) in the field to better customize their value propositions and there by enable companies to contribute to decreasing the primary energy consumption of buildings in Sweden. The macro level, referring to governmental institutions, will be provided with a better understanding of what kind of measures can be taken, to increase investments into buildings energy efficiency. It could be found from the literature reviewed for the study that there is a gap in research what comes to the Swedish market. Majority of the existing literature covers bigger markets e.g. the USA and UK but very little or if at all the Swedish market. During the literature study an existing framework on decision drivers for real estate investors was developed. The study uses mixed method consisting of qualitative and quantitative methods to answer the research questions. The study showed that the most prominent drivers on the Swedish market were the customers strategic decisions, environmental and energy certificates, reporting protocols, investment horizon, rental agreements, internal investment policies decreased property costs and building specific characteristics. It was found that the Swedish real estate investors experience very little pressure from the government to increase the energy efficiency of their buildings. It was also found that governmental subsidies are more considered a gamble than an encouragement to invest in energy efficiency due to long processing times and heavy bureaucracy.

    This is a thesis performed at GEMS PET Systems AB in Uppsala. GEMS PET Systems AB is a company within GE Healthcare. GEMS PET Systems develops and manufactures equipment for manufacturing of radioactive isotopes for PET which is a scanner used in medical applications. The systems includes an accelerator of cyclotron type and other support equipment. One system is shipped in two or three containers depending on order configuration. The main difference in these order configurations is whether radiation shielding will be included in the system or not. If not, there will be a radiation shielding concrete bunker built on site where the systems will be housed. The problem that is to be solved is that some of the components being shipped lacks sufficient shipping boxes which needs to be created. Once created these componenets will need more space in the containers which in turn creates the need for a new cargo plan for each container. This to make sure the loading process is efficient. Along with the cargoplanning a loading instruction is to be created. Using CAD the existing cargo along with the new crates was drawn and a cargoplan for each container. The outcome of this work were new shipping crates and cargoplans for each container.

    EXPLORING THE POTENTIAL IMPLICATIONS OF HAVING BOTH RETAIL AND DISTRIBUTION PRICE SIGNALS FOR DEMAND RESPONSE IN A DEREGULATED ELECTRICITY MARKET2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    As the share of weather-dependent generation and the electrification of products increase, new challenges arise as supply and demand of electricity becomes more variable and the balance between them more difficult to manage. A system where demand adapts to the available supply has been envisioned as part of the solution to this problem, and price signals that can incentivize such system are under constant development. 

    In markets with retail competition, where the distribution and sales of electricity are separated, consumers may be faced with multiple price signals. Inconsistencies between these signals could in theory distort the incentives for demand response and demand side management. We explore this issue by investigating how hourly retail supply contracts and time-of-use distribution network tariffs may vary in relation to each other, and how appropriate hourly retail supply contracts are to use as a signal for demand response in local distribution networks. 

    Our analyses show that the incentives for demand response provided by a time-of-use distribution tariff counteracts the incentives given by hourly retail supply contracts in a substantial proportion of the hours over a year. The extent of this counteraction is more severe for consumers who have less possibilities to engage in demand response over the course of a day e.g. due to a lack of technical solutions for scheduling their consumption. Our results also indicate that the hourly wholesale price of electricity may be inappropriate as an incentive for demand response from a local distribution network balancing perspective. We conclude that if distribution tariffs and retail supply contracts are to properly incentivize demand response they need to be more coherent and better reflect the actual situation in the local distribution network.

    To enable and cope with an increase of intermittent electricity generation, the power industry and regulators are trying to incentivise users to use electricity at certain times through dynamic pricing and feedback. The effects of such interventions on patterns of electricity use have been extensively studied, yet little is known about how and why householders do or do not respond to such interventions. Using interviews and activity-based diaries, this study provides a qualitative exploration of how and why householders who are subject to a demand-based time-of-use distribution tariff, real-time retail pricing and real-time feedback, do or do not respond to such interventions in their daily lives. We find that the householders have adapted a range of existing practices and have started to engage in new ones that aim to reduce peak demand during peak hours, partly without the support of feedback. Drawing on theories of practice, we challenge common preconceptions about how and why price signals work by demonstrating how the size of the financial incentive that a price signal provides does not have that much influence on householders’ willingness to engage in demand response. We argue that price signals work by providing new meanings to practices that use electricity, that feedback can mediate these meanings, and that what matters for householders’ willingness to engage in demand response is that the changes they undertake do not cause them any inconvenience by limiting the temporal flexibility of other doings in their daily lives.

    As peak demand for electricity continues to rise, distributors have begun charging small and medium-sized users for their short term demand rather than just their energy use. This is not only to meet the political aspirations for increased demand-side flexibility that now exist in many corners of the world, but to make sure that users are charged for the costs they incur. As it is only until recently that this type of users have come to face demand charges, there are however very few studies on what the actual effects of such pricing policies are, and those studies that do exist suffer from different methodological shortcomings that reduce their validity as a basis for real-world policy evaluations. This study provides the first state-of-the-art causal analysis of the demand response effects of a billing demand charge involuntarily introduced to small and medium sized users (35–63 A), using novel two-level time series models on retrospective observational consumption and survey data. Our analyses suggest that the tariff has induced an average response of −0.32 kWh/day per user over a two year long posttreatment period in comparison to a matched control group, equal to 7.4% of their daily average use during the pretreatment period. The response seems to have increased over time and to be greater during wintertime: around −0.70 kWh/day or 16.2% of the treated users’ average daily use during the pretreatment period. Comparing the individual users’ response to the size of their financial incentive to respond given the new tariff as well as their self-reported perception of the relative importance of electricity expenditures, we did not find any support for the common assumption that users with a higher financial incentive to respond do so to a greater extent. This might suggest that small and medium-sized commercial users, just as residential users, may exhibit non-financial drivers and barriers for engaging in demand response that may be vital to understand as policy makers and industry continue to seek increased demand-side flexibility.

    During this project a mechanical design proposal has been developed for the Veritas project at Uppsala University. The Veritas resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrometer aims at becoming a world leading beamline for RIXS in the 275-1500eV range. The instrument is almost 10 meters long and will rotate 120 degrees in the horizontal plane. Usually similar instruments are rotated manually. This project has developed a design proposal that allows the instrument to be rotated to a set angle without the need to manually move the instrument.

    The project started off with a phase of information gathering. It focused mainly on available products and suitable components. The information gathered here was later used to create concepts. To focus the concept generation on the most critical funcionality the challange was divided up into four different problems. Conecpts were generated for each of these problems. By comparing the conecepts against one another the most suitable concepts was merged into a final design proposal during a phas of embodiement design. This resultet in a motorized trolley. The trolley pulls or pushes the instrument around its rotational axis by moving along a rolled stainless steel T-profile. The final design proposal meets the mechanical and finiancial requirements set at the beginning of this project.

    An often encountered problem when implementing a mass flow regulator in a rolling mill is the one with measurement of speed. The most widely used solution is to fit a pulse counter to a wheel that is in contact with the strip. Common problems with this design are for instance scratch marks on the strip and problems with the flatness measuring system.  One way of circumventing the aforementioned problems would be a non-contact measuring system. The market of today only offers systems based on the Doppler principle.

    This report evaluates three different systems for non-contact speed measurement. Important areas in the evaluation have been the ability to operate under normal rolling conditions, integration in existing control system and how well the sensor can be fitted to the rolling mill. The potential gains and possibilities for improvements have also been evaluated. 

    To be able to calculate the possible earning potential of the implementation of a mass flow regulator it’s very important to know how much scrap the rolling mill in question generates. The approximation showed that the average loss is 250 kg per coil which equals 2,5 % of the weight of a full size coil. It’s possible to improve this number with a perfectly tuned mass flow regulator. Focus for the near future ought to be on designing a solution for measuring speed with existing components with a Laser-Doppler system as a backup plan.

    Epiroc Rock Drills AB in Örebro manufactures and develops machinery for the infrastructure required to maintain a fully operational mining industry, such as ventilation, drilling rigs, trucks and loaders etc.

    In these environmentally conscious times, a large market focus forzero emission machines has begun to emerge. By replacing today'sinternal combustion engines, mining companies can save large sums of money in ventilation costs and fuel while creating a more pleasant working environment in the mines. Due to these rapidly changing needs, Epiroc's machines must also change in design and performance. Epiroc has thus chosen to use interchangeable batteries in their new generation of mining machines. When the battery is discharged, it must be easy to replace with a fullycharged one. From an economic point of view, it is also important that the machine is always in production without any stops, making fast and efficient battery switches desirable. At present, the battery change is usually done with a mono-rail crane down the mine. This has proved to be very difficult and ineffective as the battery is too often jammed into the machine due to the fact that the machine is poorly positioned against the crane. Ceiling heightis also a problem, preferably one should have about 6-7 meters to accomplish a safe lift with the crane, which is not always possible down in a mine.

    In order to find a more long-term solution to this problem, this degree project took its start. During the course of the process, a number of methods in product development and concept generation have been used to develop different concepts and screen them based on the needs identified at the beginning of the work. The main problem was divided into four sub problems to facilitate conceptgeneration, the most promising sub concepts were visualized using CAD and then put together in different combinations. These combinations were then evaluated against today's solution to easily see what concept should be further developed.

    This resulted in a concept that consists of a separate platform,which can either be placed on a vehicle or as a stand-alone station. On this platform there are two telescopic arms, one on each side. These arms lifts the three ton heavy battery from the mining machine in an arcuate motion over a charged battery on the platform, placing it in a designated location and then lifts the charged battery into the machine. With this concept, it is also possible to accomplish a safe change with a limited ceiling height of approximately 3.5-4 meters, which is an improvement compared to today's solution.
