    Abstract [en]

How do letters differ from other letters, or other symbols? Is it the shape, sound, or use? The metaphysicality and ontology of words has been discussed extensively, but the discussion about letters is far from being conclusive. Due to this I will, by bringing forth a background on words, discuss letters’ origins and metaphysical distinction.

I will examine a Platonist proposal of words, and then theories about shape, sound, meaning and origin. Nurbay Irmak opposes said theories and instead means that it is history that makes words ontologically distinct, which J.T.M. Miller disagrees with. I apply all these theories on the metaphysicality of letters and symbols and explain why they do not work for symbols either. Herman Cappelen and Ernest Lepore have previously discussed symbols and sign systems, and I will use their conclusions to strengthen my arguments. Lastly, I will argue for and against three of my own theories: Relation, Equivalence and Context. The point of this essay is to examine the metaphysicality of letters and symbols. What is it that makes symbols metaphysically distinct?

"13 meter från marken": Poetiska texter i en svensk niondeklass2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This master’s thesis investigates poetic text writing through a teaching project conducted on a secondary school class in Sweden. Inspired by ekphrastic poetry, the teaching project consisted of poetry and literature reading. The students visited a sculpture related to the literature, upon which they wrote poetic texts about the sculpture. The main purpose of the study is to describe how teaching in the Swedish subject can make use of Swedish language teaching by developing students’ poetic texts that touches on topics such as living conditions and identity. Drawing from thematic narrative analysis, most notably Bamberg’s positioning model, the analysis investigates the narratives constructed in the students’ poetic texts as well as identity aspects negotiated through the narratives. The students’ identities were further discovered through participant observation and semi-structured interviews to deepen the understanding of the meeting between art, identity and learning. The general perception drawn from the interviewees’ answers is that the Swedish subject rarely includes knowledge of nor writing of poetic texts. However, the study emphasises that poetry could have an integral part of the education in the Swedish subject in secondary education. The results show that the students’ poetic texts tend to relate to the sculpture and the physical environment, as well as the social context of the environment. Furthermore, the identities of the students were shown to have a high relevance in the writing process. The teaching project was based on principles of culturally sustaining pedagogy and aimed at contributing to the sociocultural support of the school. As the students’ language and cultural backgrounds proved to be significant in the writing process, it became evident that multilingualism was a natural part of the student’s everyday school life.

2D Reflection Seismic Imaging of Rødby Structures, Denmark: Geological Conditions for CO2 Sequestration2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis delves into the realm of Virtual Reality (VR) to explore its potential for visualizing data flows in intricate systems. Focused on the transition from conventional 2D representations to immersive 3D experiences, the study employs Unity and Oculus Quest 2 for prototyping. The theoretical framework encompasses Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Extended Reality (XR), User Interface (UI), Oculus Quest 2, Unity, XR Interaction Toolkit, Data Visualization, Data Flow Visualization, and Archi. The methodology involves the development of four prototypes, each building upon the previous version’s insights. The first prototype introduces basic VR interactions, progressing to the second, which incorporates data integration. The third prototype advances further with immersive 3D iconography, while the fourth refines the user experience by introducing multiple rooms and enhanced interactions. Results are evaluated through both technical and non-technical feedback. Technical interviews with four individuals, primarily focused on the data flow model, reveal positive responses regarding ease of interaction, intuitiveness, and insights gained. Non-technical participants, in a Likert-scale questionnaire, express favorable perceptions regarding the ease of understanding, engagement, and the system’s ability to provide valuable insights. In conclusion, the VR data flow visualization showcases promise in enhancing understanding and engagement, as evidenced by positive user feedback. The transition from 2D to VR brings notable advantages, with users finding the immersive experience more intuitive and informative. This exploration lays the foundation for potential applications in industries where complex data flow comprehension is crucial.

A Call for Action: Placing Emergency on the Agenda: A Study on Irish Public Opinion and the Climate Emergency Declaration2024Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study researches how public attitudes can affect policy, which is done by examining if climate change issues can be placed onto the agenda by actors outside of the policy process. The study centers on Ireland as the first nation to declare a climate emergency, with the UK taking the role of control group due to them not having made such a declaration. Ireland is therefore hypothesized to have a population that is more concerned about climate change than the UK. The public attitudes from Ireland and the UK are gathered from data collected by European Social Survey. The findings are then presented through mean comparisons to measure and compare public attitudes of the two populations. Surprisingly, the results reveal that Ireland does not have a significantly more concerned public than the UK, which causes the initial hypothesis to be rejected. This outcome leads to alternative hypotheses regarding other factors, such as differences in wealth distribution or education level, being explanatory to which part of the public that can impact the agenda. It is also concluded that the decision of Ireland to declare a climate emergency was initiated from the top, i.e., the policymakers, perhaps in order to foster public mobilization. Further studies are encouraged, to look at other factors within the public that can affect the policy agenda and explain Ireland’s declaration of a climate emergency, or to lift the focus and conduct a similar study on a larger scale.

A Captured and Divided Civil Society: A Study of Democracy and Civil Society in Central Eastern Europe2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the interplay between pernicious polarization, autonomy of civil society - here called civil society capture, and liberal democracy in Central and Eastern Europe from 2006 to 2020. In the absence of prior time-series data on pernicious polarization and civil society capture, this study built and analysed a dataset of these variables across the region, testing six hypotheses. The findings confirm that both pernicious polarization and civil society capture exhibited an increase during the study period across most CEE countries, the findings also confirm hypotheses linking polarization/civil society capture with democracy, revealing a negative correlation between these variables and liberal democracy. Moreover, a qualitative analysis conducted on four countries highlighted mechanisms through which polarization might contribute to democratic decline. Factors such as the depth of polarization, divisive rhetoric, and sociocultural divides emerged as crucial elements in potentially fuelling democratic backsliding.

A Comparative Analysis of Whisper and VoxRex on Swedish Speech Data2024Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

With the constant development of more advanced speech recognition models, the need to determine which models are better in specific areas and for specific purposes becomes increasingly crucial. Even more so for low-resource languages such as Swedish, dependent on the progress of models for the large international languages. Lagerlöf (2022) conducted a comparative analysis between Google’s speech-to-text model and NLoS’s VoxRex B, concluding that VoxRex was the best for Swedish audio. Since then, OpenAI released their Automatic Speech Recognition model Whisper, prompting a reassessment of the preferred choice for transcribing Swedish. In this comparative analysis using data from Swedish radio news segments, Whisper performs better than VoxRex in tests on the raw output, highly affected by more proficient sentence constructions. It is not possible to conclude which model is better regarding pure word prediction. However, the results favor VoxRex, displaying a lower variability, meaning that even though Whisper can predict full text better, the decision of what model to use should be determined by the user’s needs.

A Crisis of Identity: National Identities’ Impact on Approval of Government Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In the face of ever-present crises, this thesis aims to investigate if national identity is a factor that can contribute to our understanding of why individuals have different opinions of government crisis response, focusing specifically on the COVID-19 pandemic as a most likely case for this. The research question is “Does national identity impact approval of government crisis response?” By using regression analysis to study national identities generally, as well as some subdivisions of national identity, the investigation finds an (albeit) weak relationship between having a strong national identity and approval of government response to the COVID- 19 pandemic. The central finding is that approval was generally higher among people with strong national identities, especially in the subgroup of uncritical patriots. This indicates that national identities may have a role to play in shaping government approval during crises.

A group of Swedish speakers’ performance on Swedish adaptations of the Bedside WAB-Rand CLQT: The performance of cognitively and linguistically nonimpaired adults on measures of language and cognition and its relationship to verbal fluency2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

A Hidden Voting Gap?: How the Interaction Between Income and Depression Affects Voting2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Depression has only in recent years been explored within political science, despite its deeply political causes and consequences. Previous research has found significantly lower political participation among people with depression and has especially focused on its negative effect on voting. While there are reasons to expect that depression among low-income earners could result in even lower voting than depression among high-income earners, no research has investigated whether the relationship between depression and voting could depend on income levels. The thesis therefore quantitatively tests the interaction between depression and income on voting behavior on the individual level using Dutch panel data from the Longitudinal Internet studies for the Social Sciences (LISS) from the years 2008-2021. It hypothesizes and examines whether a combination of a low income and depression creates even greater obstacles to voting than what has previously been recognized. Leaning on regression analysis with individual-level fixed effects, the main finding is a relatively robust and significant negative interaction effect whereby a low income is associated with a significantly lower intention to vote among people with depression compared to individuals with depression and a high income. Potential mediators - political efficacy, trust, and mobilizing resources - are furthermore tested through mediation models, but no support is found for the hypotheses that these variables mediate the interaction. Altogether, the study highlights a potential voting gap among people with low income and depression that has previously been unrecognized. It also deepens the general understanding of the how economic and mental health factors relates to political participation, emphasizing the need for further research to fully comprehend the complexity of this relationship.

A Novel Method for Measuring Low Energy Excitations with BLS2024Studentarbete övrigt, 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This report presents the work done on an optical setup combining Raman and BLS spectroscopy and discusses the achieved improvements of the system. After some general optimization and minor redesigning, a new alternative beam path was implemented. This new beam path allows to freely adjust all three volume Bragg grating filters in the setup, which are used to suppress the elastic line and which feature an exceptionally narrow filter window. This enables measurement of BLS signal closer to the elastic line, with a frequency separation of only 30 GHz from it achieved during the project. For measuring below this threshold, additional suppression is needed. As a first technique to achieve this, the Fabry-Pérot interferometer provided by the BLS spectrometer was partially put to use. At the point of this report, this has not been completed successfully and the setup also suffers from other adverse effects in the form of signal fluctuations and spurious measurements close to the elastic line. Nonetheless, the setup has showed promising intermediate results and can be expected to perform well once these challenges have been overcome.

A Path Towards Empowerment?: A study on the perceptions of Men and Masculinities within Microfinance Investment Funds2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Feminist research as well as the growing field of ‘Men and Masculinities’ have identified how targeting women and excluding men from development initiatives could have unintended repercussions. As a common tool for development, microfinance is a fitting representation for this emphasis on women. At the same time, Microfinance Investment Funds (MFIFs) have emerged as established actors within the microfinance landscape, and their potential to shape microfinance approaches has been highlighted within literature. This thesis builds upon this previous research to delve into the discourses of MFIFs concerning men and masculinities within the context of microfinance initiatives. Using a theoretical framework that intersects models of empowerment and hegemonic masculinity, the thesis explores the extent to which MFIF discourses incorporate men and masculinities, as well as attempting to explain the presence or absence of these discourses. An analysis reveals that there is mixed alignment with models of empowerment and a lack of discussions concerning men and masculinities.

A Radical Restructuring of Development Aid: From Liberal Justice to “From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs” Assessing the Failures of Development Aid and Providing A New Normative Alternative2024Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I will argue for the need for a change of norms in the global governance system in regards to development aid. I argue that liberal norms of justice and distribution of wealth have a negative effect on development aid practices. This study is a normative political theory and the material researched is relevant literature sources. The suggested new norms are, first; anarchic theory which views the state as an instrument to inforce inequality and second; the communist theory of redistributive justice “From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs”. The global governance system’s institutions will be argued to solely include civil society organisations. The argument for a new structure additionally lies in the need to make development aid less prone to creating and re-institutionalising neo-colonial relations. Development aid, or as it largely has been practised, loans, has historically forced underdeveloped nations into submission by global power states. Power states that through the use of the loan and specifically the lender's debt can further drive their interests. Instead the wellbeing of the receivers shall stand in focus, and it is the communities who receive development aid who shall dictate the terms, not their governments nor other governments. The aid shall hence be proportionate. This will enable development aid to be given in a contextual and more constructive way, by and for the people who have requested to receive funding.

A risk of conflict – Perception or Reality?: A media study of securitization and strategic narratives in the Suwałki Gap.2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis studies news media published by Lithuanian, Polish and Russian news outlets on the Suwałki Gap and the Kaliningrad Oblast. It analyses whether and how these online news articles portray a risk for conflict in this geopolitical area for English-speaking audiences. The methodology uses qualitative content analysis and a theoretical framework based on the theory of strategic narratives and both the Copenhagen School approach and the sociological approach to securitization to code the content that has been published. The timeframe spans from 2021 to 2023, which corresponds to the Russian and Belarusian ‘Zapad exercises’ in the region. Analysis of the online news articles finds a series of narratives. Some confirm that Russia’s main goal is to either justify Russian (military) actions towards ‘the West’, or to spread chaos through malign information influence. Others, against the expectations of the literature, show that Polish and Lithuanian uses of securitization are significantly different, especially due to a different kind of portrayal of vulnerability in the securitization process. However, the large-scale invasion of Ukraine has also caused strengthened (military) cooperation between the two countries. This study contributes to developing a better understanding of securitizing narratives that national and state-owned media outlets use to portray risk, especially when Russia is involved.

A space-time shape for easier spatiotemporal visualization in traffic networks2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (yrkesexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Modern big data systems are enabling new possibilities that never were thought possible in the past. The ability to gather massive data on an individual level has made fields like space-time geography bloom in the latest decennia. The usage of shapes in a 3D space allows us to visualize certain phenomena over time. This project seeks to widen the scope of such shapes by considering another way of visualization, specifically for traffic networks.

With the use of tools like OTP Analyst and traffic data provided by Skånetrafiken, a new space-time visualization method is constructed. It simplifies the task of visualizing temporal change in accessibility and traffic opportunities from one point and serves as an aid to easily spot problems. Multiple origin points can also be chosen to to aid collective accessibility assessment. The process involves constructing polygons by applying the concave hull algorithm on generated point sets. These are in turn clustered, intersected and plotted.

The result is evaluated by professionals within transportation and traffic planning. It is deemed potentially useful in various applications such as trip feasibility and finding gaps in the travel network. However the resulting visualization is also judged to be too simple and lacking interactivity. To further realize the goals of the project, different tools would need to be used along with improvements to the data and method. Still, the result indicates that simple visualizations using space-time constraints could aid planning and execution within transportation and in turn alleviate issues caused by poor accessibility.

Abstract: Guided by the research question ‘Why do some governments use child soldiers while others do not?, this article examines the relationship between conflict intensity and government use of child soldiers. Through a qualitative and comparative analysis between Chad and Somalia 2012-2022, the study specifically investigates how low education provision and the strategic need for military innovation impact this phenomenon. The findings suggest that the combination of these factors could make child soldier recruitment into government forces especially prevalent. However, these findings are limited and more research is needed to better understand the complex interactions among various factors influencing child soldier recruitment by government forces.

A study on sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) in wind farms with PMSG and how to damp SSR with E-STATCOM using positive damping: A simulation study in PSCAD2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (yrkesexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The power grid is changing, more intermittent renewable energy is connected to the grid using power converter technologies. This can create new problems in the power grid and one of these problems is the sub-synchronous oscillation (SSO) and the subgroup sub-synchronous resonance (SSR). SSO/SSR can create power quality issues, decrease the system performance, and damage turbines in the power grid. Since 1970s this problem has been reported in the literature, many studies have been conducted to prevent and damp out resonance events in the power grid. A new type of SSR was discovered in 2015, which is the SSR between permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind farm and a weak grid.

The objectives of this master thesis are to review what parameters cause SSR to occur between a wind farm with PMSG and a weak grid and investigate how an E-STATCOM can damp SSR in a PMSG wind farm with positive damping. Additionally, STATCOMs ability to damp SSR will be reviewed with a literature study. Electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations in PSCAD were done with a system from Hitachi Energy including an offshore PMSG windfarm connected to a grid with the possibility to connect an E-STATCOM.

Firstly, wind speed, Short Circuit Ratio (SCR) and X/R-ratio were varied to see how they affect the SSR to occur in the system without E-STATCOM connected. The results showed that high wind speed had the largest effect on the SSR, almost independent of the SCR and X/R-ratio. With low SCR the amplitude of the resonance increased with higher wind speeds. A combination of low SCR and high X/R-ratio created SSR for lower wind speeds as well.

Secondly, an E-STATCOM were connected to the system and were able to damp the SSR successfully. According to literature STATCOM can also damp SSR with an additional power oscillation damping controller.

In conclusion, wind speed, SCR and X/R-ratio are parameters that affect the possibility for SSR to occur in a wind farm with PMSG connected to a weak grid and wind speed had the largest effect on the system. If the resonances occur, E-STATCOM can successfully damp the resonances using positive damping.

A Verified QBF Solver2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Quantified Boolean Formulas (QBFs) extend propositional logic with universal and existential quantification over Boolean variables.  A QBF is satisfiable if and only if there is an assignment of Boolean values to the free variables that makes the formula true, and a QBF solver is a software tool determining if a given QBF is satisfiable.

This thesis introduces formalizations of, and correctness proofs for, two QBF solvers in the Isabelle/HOL interactive theorem prover.  One solver is based on naive quantifier expansion, while the other uses a search-based algorithm.  While experiments show that the verified solvers have performance far behind the state-of-the-art in QBF solving, they provide unparalleled confidence in correctness.  To our knowledge, these are the first QBF solvers to be formally verified using interactive theorem proving.

Addressing Health Hazards or Promoting Commercial Interests?: An application of the Advocacy Coalition Framework on contemporary EU Alcohol Policy2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Throughout its history, the EU has been centred around economic integration. Today, however, the EU's political ambitions extend to more areas, such as environment and health. How does the legacy of economic integration affect the EU's ability to pursue policy in these areas, especially when it may offset commercial objectives?

One such area is alcohol policy. While alcohol policy often involves a trade-off between health and commercial objectives, EU alcohol policy has historically prioritised the latter. This appeared to change with the announcement of Europe's Beating Cancer Plan in 2021. This thesis, using the Advocacy Coalition Framework, studies EU alcohol policy to determine whether or not a policy shift towards a more ambitious public health policy occurred as a result of the plan.

The results show that policy change did not happen in the wake of the cancer plan. Instead, policy was delayed or changed to not interfere with commercial goals. The findings also show that two coalitions fought for influence over the policy process. One, centred around public health actors, and one centred around alcohol industry actors. The study shows that the industry coalition was more influential at key stages that affected the outcome of the policy deliberations.

The conclusions show that the political culture and commercial structures set up to accommodate single market integration also act as defenders of commercial priorities. Notably, corresponding structures for public health were either limited or non-existent. This suggests that a bias exists that hinder significant political progress on health policy.

Affectionate Behavior on Screen: Unveiling Cultural Nuances in Chinese and Western Media through Addicted and SKAM2024Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines how affectionate behaviors are portrayed in Chinese and Western media, with a particular emphasis on the Chinese television show Addicted and the Norwegian television show SKAM. The study seeks to find cultural subtleties in the way that same-sex relationships are portrayed, all against the backdrop of China's distinctive media environment. Through the use of inductive thematic analysis, the research finds numerous themes that are prevalent in both series, but are presented in different ways in terms of cultural reflections. These themes are analyzed and discussed, and the two cultural elements are compared. The power theory of Michel Foucault is applied to examine how censorship and societal standards affect the way queer people are portrayed in Chinese media. The results draw attention to the nuanced interactions between cultural norms, power relations, and queer identity in visual storytelling, revealing both differences and similarities in how affectionate behavior is portrayed. Differences emerge showcasing culture-specific acts like communal eating and special linguistic terms. Both series depict the challenges of young men falling in love, emphasizing shared obstacles.
