    Abstract [en]

    An organ culture technique is described which permits the lymphoid development of the thymic anlagen of 10-day-old chick embryos for at least 10 days in vitro. Grid organ cultures of a modified Trowell type were employed. Among several tissue culture media tested, Waymouth's MB 752/1 medium gave superior results. In initial experiments this medium was supplemented with heat-inactivated horse serum and embryo-extract. Subsequently it was found that this supplement could be substituted for by chicken serum alone. The morphological development of the embryonic thymic anlagen in organ culture has been characterized. Typical lymphoid cells developed from the initial lymphoid precursor cells. Late in the culture period, large numbers of small lymphocytes appeared. Extensive cell proliferation was demonstrated during the first 6 days of culture by means of autoradiography. This organ culture technique should facilitate the further analysis of factors influencing thymic lymphocytopoiesis as well as of the role of the thymus in the development of lymphocyte functions.

    Abstract [en]

    MO LCAO SCF calculations have been performed to investigate the molecular astructure and vibrational spectrum of the bifluoride ion in its normal and deuterated form. The potential energy for nuclear motions has been evaluated as a function of the molecular degrees of freedom, taking only linear geometries into account. The vibrational Schrödinger equation has been solved by expanding the vibrational part of the total wavefunction as a sum of products of linear harmonic-oscillator eigenfunctions. The calculated properties are in good agreement with experiments, and even the minute effects of deuteration are well reproduced.

    Abstract [en]

    The spin structure of the metallic hexagonal B 35 phase of FeGe has been studied by means of susceptibility and magnetization measurements. Below the Neel temperature TN = 411 K hexagonal FeGe is a uniaxial antiferromagnet with the spins parallel to the c-axis. In each c-plane all spins are ferromagnetically coupled with an exchange constant J0 ≈ 22 meV. The antiferromagnetic exchange constant between nearest neighbour and next nearest neighbour c-planes are J1 = -3.5 meV and J2 = -0.9 meV resp. in the molecular field model. Susceptibility and spin flop experiments indicate that the spins tilt away from the c-axis below 30 K. We suggest that the spins then form a double cone structure with a cone halfangle of 20° at 4.2 K. In the double cone the c-plane components have a turn angle in the vicinity of 180° between nearest neighbour planes, which implies absence of long range order. The result is in good agreement with Fermi surface calculations by Sundström (Physica Scripta, following paper), which show the existence of several spin density wave vectors between Q = 0.89 π/c and Q = 1.3 π/c calipering different parts of the Fermi surface in a direction parallel to the c-axis.

    A procedure for summing a power series based on a Darboux function ansatz is developed. It involves computation of poles and residues of logarithmic derivatives using rational functions. Applications to the helium isoelectronic sequence condense the power series expansion (˜ 40 coefficients) to a few-parameter formula, which exhibits the singularity determining the radius of convergence. Accurate extrapolations of electron affinities and shielding factors are obtained.

    Spin-measurements have been performed on some neutron-deficient promethium, samarium, europium and gadolinium isotopes using conventional atomic-beam magnetic resonance techniques. The results are: 141Pm (20.9 min) I=5/2, 140Sm (14.8 min) I=0, 141Sm (11.3 min) I=1/2, 141mSm (22.9 min) I=11/2, 142Sm (72.5 min) I=0, 143Sm (8.8 min) I=3/2, 145Eu (5.93 d) I=5/2, 146Eu (4.65 d) I=4, 147Eu (22 d) I=5/2, 148Eu (54 d) I=5, 149Eu (93.1 d) I=5/2, 150Eu (12.6 h) I=0, 145Gd (22.9 min) I=1/2, 147Gd (38.5 h) I=7/2, 149Gd (9.4 d) I=7/2, 151Gd (120 d) I=7/2. The investigated nuclei appear close to the shell closure at neutron number N=82. A systematic review of the low-lying states of odd-even and doubly-odd nuclei in this region is presented.

    Cells of the ascomycete Ophiostoma multiannulatum became sensitive to inorganic salts after a heat shock or a treatment with 2,4-dinitrophenol. The induced sensitivity to chloride and bromide ions could be largely reversed by histidine and certain other imidazole derivatives. No other organic compounds tested except imidazoles possessed this ability. The sensitization is interpreted as a consequence of an injury to cellular membranes, in particular those of the mitochondria, and to an impaired oxidative phosphorylation.

    The effects on apparent photosynthesis in the green alga Scenedesmus quadricauda of four chelating substances, 8-hydroxyquinoline (= oxine), β-isopropyltropolone (=β-thujaplicin), sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate and 3-(β-hydroxyethyl)-C-pentamethylene-3-aza-dithiocarbamate have been investigated. The first three compounds mentioned had all an inhibitory effect on photosynthesis, measured as oxygen production with a manometric, a volumetric or a polarographic method. In combination with certain concentrations of CuSO4 bimodal dose response curves were observed, similar to those obtained on the growth of different microorganisms. Calculations of the amounts of different complexes that appeared in the nutrient solutions during the experiments are compared with the recorded degrees of inhibition. The results strongly indicate that the 1: 1-complexes between Cu2+ and the chelating substances are the most toxic agents at low concentrations of these compounds.

    Ab initio MO SCF calculations in a Gaussian basis for a number of molecules have been performed to study the chemical shift of sulphur 2p-electrons. Estimates of chemical shifts and comparison with experimental shifts are reported. Sulphur 3d-orbitals are shown to be important for the magnitude of the shifts.

    Abstract [en]

    The study of molecules in the gas phase by ESCA offers several advantages. Particularly, the opportunity to make direct comparisons between theoretical and experimental results is of importance. From such comparisons a more complete understanding of several fundamental phenomena in ESCA has been gained. The present paper reviews some recent work in Uppsala along this line. The effect of electron reorganization on core binding energies in atoms and molecules is analyzed. Chemical shifts in ESCA and n.m.r. are discussed. The existence of a general relation involving these chemical shifts and nuclear spin-rotation constants is pointed out. A model for analyzing ESCA intensities of the valence electrons in molecules is presented. It is shown that the analysis may be useful in identifying the molecular orbitals.

    For most applications of ESCA it is highly desirable to improve the resolution and the intensity. An instrument, particularly designed to achieve this for gases, is discussed. It can also handle solid samples. It makes use of a high-emission, fine-focus electron gun, a rotating anode and a double focusing quartz crystal. The first electron spectrum recorded with this new instrument is presented.

    The properly symmetrized second order energy, epsilon(Q)(2). has been observed to approach one half of the correct dispersion energy epsilon(2) for large interactomic distances. We contend that the proper quantity to be examined is epsilon(Q)(2)lambda(Q). lambda(Q) approaches epsilon(Q)(2)/(epsilon(Q)(2) - epsilon(Q)(3)) approximate to 2 at R=8a(o) for H-2 and epsilon(Q)(2)/epsilon(Q)(3) approximate to 2. Hence E-o - epsilon(Q)(1) + epsilon(Q)(2) is a bad approximation.

    A generalization of the Pade approximant technique obtained by inner projections leads to approximate Green functions whose spectral densities satisfy a certain number of frequency moments. This approach contains decoupling schemes previously given and their explicit representation in terms of the moments.

    Abstract [en]

    Results, obtained by means of the ESCA-technique (Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis), are reported on the correlation between the binding energy of the inner electrons of sulphur and the chemical state and environment, with particular emphasis on the sulphur-oxygen bond. A charge-binding energy correlation is established which can be used for the estimation of charge on sulphur in compounds with uncertain structure or composition.

    Abstract [en]

    Ionization energies for the molecular orbitals in methane and ethane are obtained by means of the ESCA technique. In methane the 2a(1) electrons are found at a binding energy of 23.1 eV: in ethane the 2a(1) level is split up in two levels due to the interaction between the carbon atoms.

    Abstract [en]

    It is proved that certain convolution inequalities are easy consequences of the Hardy-Littlewood-Wiener maximal theorem. These inequalities include the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality for fractional integrals, its extension by Trudinger, and an interpolation inequality by Adams and Meyers. We also improve a recent extension of Trudinger's inequality due to Strichartz.

    Assume that a random sample of size n has been taken from a multinomial distribution with N cells. Let ξk be the number of observations in the kth cell and set

    Zn=(ξ1, 1/N)+Fnn,N/N).

    It is proved that, under general conditions, Zn is asymptotically normal when n and N tend to infinity so that n/N ↑ α > 0. This result is used to study asymptotic efficiency for certain goodness-of-fit tests. The chi-squared statistic turns out to be optimal in some situations.
