Mapping Out the "Wasteland": Testimonies from the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees in the Service of Tudjman's Revisionism2009In: Holocaust and Genocide Studies, ISSN 8756-6583, E-ISSN 1476-7937, Vol. 23, no 2, 263-284 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In a 1989 monograph, Franjo Tudjman used reprints of witness statements by Serbian former inmates of Jasenovac concentration camp that depicted the Jewish prisoners in a negative light. A close examination of the original documents indicates that Tudjman used these highly problematic accounts of life in the camp uncritically. The descriptions of events contained in the statements do not always correspond to one another, and some are contradicted by other sources. The author of this article shows that a conflict emerged between some Jews and some Serbs in Jasenovac in March 1942, and suggests that this may explain in part why some of the Serbian refugees made negative remarks about "Jewish" behavior. Although Tudjman almost certainly was aware that the sources were problematic, he nevertheless used them - apparently, the author concludes, in an attempt to foster political support within segments of the Croatian nationalist diaspora in North America.

Collaboration and Resistance during the Holocaust: Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania2004Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This book assembles contributions from the conference "Focus Reichskommissariat Ostland - Collaboration and Resistance during the Holocaust", which took place in Stockholm and Uppsala in April 2002. It presents new perspectives based on new archival sources and oral historiography of the Holocaust during the German occupation of the Baltic countries and part of Belarus: the Reichskommissariat Ostland. Acclaimed historians and new researchers from Belarus, Estonia, Germany, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden and the USA focus on the issues of collaboration with or resistance to the Nazis and their extermination policy. The studies of collaboration concern that of the German civilian administration as well as the native local «self-defence» administration in the occupied countries, particularly in Latvia and Lithuania. Several studies deal with resistance in the ghettos, especially Minsk ghetto, and among the partisans in the forests of Belarus and Lithuania.

This book has distinctive relevance in bringing together a large amount of archival research done during the period since the fall of the Soviet Union.

War Within: Everyday Life in Sarajevo under Siege2000Book (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

In this ethnography of the war in Bosnia, the author examines the ways in which the people of Sarajevo negotiated the meaning of normality in their everyday lives, which became dominated by the war situation and the siege of the town. The study explores the ways of dealing with everyday threat to life, ways of providing the subsistence, changes in social relations, and the role of religion and ethnic traditions in the process of constituting national identities.

Six months of fieldwork was conducted in Sarajevo between 1994 and 1996, and an additional six months in Croatia and Hercegovina between 1991 and 1993. The analysis is based on extensive informal interviews with about 60 people in Sarajevo as well as the author’s own experience of the war.

The study shows that the need to establish a normality in a situation where pre-war norms of conduct and ideology had become obliterated, was the key to a successful coping with the war. The constant fear for one’s life could be counteracted by ignoring the dangers, creating a distance by joking, and inventing personal magic routines. In their struggle to uphold pre-war norms of subsistence Sarajevans demonstrated an immense creativity in their ‘imitation of life’, as they called it. Social relations of friendship in neighbourhoods, and in families changed as roughly half of the pre-war population left the town during the war. Changes were also brought about by the deterioration of material living conditions, as well as by the emerging differentiation into three antagonistic nations. People witnessed an increasing public presence of religious customs and symbols, and as ethno-religious traditions were the only difference between the different Sarajevan nations, they were confronted with the question of the meaning of their own national identifications as well as those of the people they interacted with. Finally, the study examines how a firsthand experience changes our perception of the phenomenon of war.
