Introduction to the Uralic languages, with special reference to Finnish and Hungarian2023In: The Uralic Languages / [ed] Daniel Abondolo & Riitta-Liisa Valijärvi, London: Routledge, 2023, 2, p. 1-80Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter introduces the rest of the book by rapidly surveying the names of the Uralic languages and their speakers’ numbers, as well as discussing the relative size and age of the family and its nine branches. It outlines the prehistory of these branches and then goes on to sketch in outline the phonological and lexicogrammatical features that the editors think most interesting, problematic, suggestive, and instructive. The reader should come away from reading this chapter with an understanding of the four kinds of information contained in the rest of the book. These are (i) how and which speech sounds are used (vowels and vowel harmony, stress, consonants, and consonant gradation); (ii) how nouns and verbs change their shapes in sentences—case, number, and predestination (in nouns) and tense, mood, and object indexing (in verbs); (iii) how words are put together to make clauses and complex sentences; and (iv) how new words are made (derivation and compounding). The chapter also introduces the more important theoretical conventions that the editors have found most useful in characterizing Uralic languages. To make the chapter accessible to as wide as possible a readership, most of the terminology used is cast in a basic linguistic theory framework.

The Uralic Languages: Second Edition2023Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The Uralic Languages, second edition, is a reference book which brings together detailed discussions of the historical development and specialized linguistic structures and features of the languages in the Uralic family.

The Uralic languages are spoken today in a vast geographical area stretching from Dalarna County in Sweden to Dudinka, Taimyr, Russia. There are currently approximately 50 languages in the group, the largest one among them being the state languages Finnish, Estonian, and Hungarian; other Uralic languages covered in the book are South Saami, Skolt Saami, Võro, Moksha Mordvin, Mari, Udmurt, Zyrian Komi, Mansi, Khanty, Nganasan, Forest and Tundra Enets, Nenets, and Selkup. The book also contains a chapter on Finnic languages, the reconstruction of Uralic, the history of Uralic studies, connections of Uralic to other language families, and language names, demographics, and degrees of endangerment. This second and thoroughly revised edition updates and augments the authoritative accounts of the first edition and reflects recent and ongoing developments in linguistics and the languages themselves, as well as our further enhanced understanding of the relations and patterns of influence between them. Each chapter combines modern linguistic analysis and documentary linguistics; a relatively uniform structure allows for easy typological comparison between the individual languages.

Written by an international team of experts, The Uralic Languages will be invaluable to students and researchers within linguistics, folklore, and Siberian studies.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on the lived multilingualism of a group of young Russian-German adults who as children migrated together with their families from post-Soviet states to the Federal Republic of Germany during the 1990s. Today these adults live in a ‘Plattenbau’ housing estate in a small town in one of the new federal states of Germany. The large pre-fabricated concrete-slab system-built housing estates that were built during the GDR-era are today generally considered as deprived areas due a combination of decreasing population and high unemployment.

This thesis shows how young Russian-Germans create a multilingual community of practice and use various aspects of language and non-linguistic resources for identity construction. The data analysed in this thesis comes from ethnographic studies conducted during three phases of fieldwork between Spring 2011 and Spring 2012. The data was collected at a youth centre where the group of young Russian-German adults regularly met.

Combining intensive participant observation, field notes, photos, and narrative interviews the thesis is a mixed-method investigation. Underpinning the analysis of the research data are theoretical models of the relationship between language, identity, and space. Methodologically this study combines linguistic ethnography, narrative analysis, and membership categorization analysis.

The thesis argues that an ethnographical-narrative approach is a powerful tool that is able to highlight the role of language(s) and non-linguistic resources for identity construction in social spaces, illustrates how young Russian-Germans construct a web of multilingual identities by using social categories to position themselves and others, and shows how the lived multilingualism of  young Russian-German adults influences all aspects of their social lives. For example, the thesis shows the maintenance of Russian as a heritage language within Russian-German families, yet and an avoidance of visible signs of the Russian-German heritage in public spaces.

Collaboration across scales in education for mother tongue teachers2023Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the Swedish school system, mother tongue education has been available, under certain regulations, as an elective subject, since the Home Language Reform of 1977 (Reath Warren, 2017). Since its introduction, the subject has been the subject of debate and contestation (Salö et al., 2018) but nonetheless, researchers have found that mother tongue instruction offers opportunities for development of literacies in the mother tongue and other languages as well as supporting learning in general (see Utbildningsdepartementet, 2019, for an overview of research). Among the structural challenges the subject faces, is that there are no specific qualifications required to become a mother tongue teacher, nor regulated educational pathways in Sweden, although several universities in Sweden do offer courses and programmes on different aspects of mother tongue instruction. In this presentation, an online resource for professional development for mother tongue teachers in Sweden will be presented, and analysed. This resource is the result of an initiative and funding from the Swedish National Agency for Education, and collaborations between researchers, mother tongue teachers and The National Agency for Education over one academic year. The online resource comprises seven units which each include a theoretical text exploring didactic or pedagogical perspectives relevant for mother tongue teachers, discussion questions addressing central concerns in the theoretical text and a classroom activity which mother tongue teachers are then invited to discuss, test and evaluate together with colleagues. The theoretical texts and activities were produced by a team that included both researchers and mother tongue teachers. In each of the seven units, perspectives from Sweden’s five national minority languages are also provided, given the very particular conditions under which students and teachers of these languages work.In the presentation, we argue that the ideological space created by policies that provide the opportunity to study mother tongues at school in Sweden stimulated the creation of this online resource, which opens up an implementational space for the development of mother tongue education (Hornberger 2005). The professional development programmes are moreover, created through collaboration across the scales of context, anchoring them in both20research and best practice, as well as providing a valuable space for interaction and learning for mother tongue teachers.

Actitudes y estereotipos hacia el lenguaje femenino, a través de una carta de autopresentación2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

This article studies the translation flows of picture book series between Scandinavia (Sweden and Norway) and France between 2011 and 2021. According to studies on literary flows, countries having so-called « dominated » and « peripheral » or « semi-peripheral » languages, for example Norway and Sweden, should import more literature from the core (France) than the other way around. However, the present study shows that this theory does not hold water regarding picture books for children aged 3-6 years, where the literary flows from the core to the (semi-)periphery are uneven, or even non-existing. We are able to ascertain that the status of the picture book series is maintained as they cross the borders between France and Scandinavia. Moreover, the series translated to French are almost always characterized by a high literary legitimacy (symbolic recognition of authors and works, limited number of titles per series, affirmation of graphic and authorial creativity), with often a representation of a Scandinavian perspective. The fact that the books originally are part of a series is rarely foregrounded as a marketing device in Scandinavia, but on the contrary, this could be the case in France. The translation flows concerning picture book series show that seriality, sales figures and literary legitimacy are compatible.

Contemporary translated children’s literature in Sweden with a focus on literature from French-speaking regions2022In: STRIDON: Journal of Studies in Translation and Interpreting, E-ISSN 2784-5826, Vol. 2, no 1, p. 79-95Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article sheds light on translated children’s literature in Sweden during the period 2015−2020. A relatively large portion of children’s literature in Sweden (36% in 2020), from books for toddlers to young adult literature, comes from translations. It has been shown in polysystem research, that ‘semi-peripheral’ countries such as Sweden, or places having a so-called ‘dominated language’, are known to import much literature because, for example, their internal production is rather limited, which a priori is not the case in Sweden. We first present a panorama of the kinds of books that are translated to Swedish and the languages they are translated from. We then focus on the particular position in Sweden of African children’s literature from French-speaking regions and assume that French is used as a tool that enables this literature to reach a Swedish audience, as part of the global phenomena of serial books and the emerging wimmelbooks. We conclude that even if Sweden’s national production is greater than book importing and translation, there is still a not insignificant number of translated picturebooks through which authors and illustrators from French-speaking regions occupy a stable share of this production, and may in this way transport cultural values from more peripheral countries.

    Abstract [es]

Jahrhunderts2013Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis addresses the decline of the preterite tense, referred to as der Oberdeutsche Präteritumschwund (Upper German Preterite Loss), in favour of the present perfect tense. Its main focus is to examine and compare the distribution of the two tenses. The present work combines synchronic and diachronic perspectives in order to provide a thorough account of the process of change; special attention is paid to the development of the present perfect and its different readings. The historical change in the German verbal system – the possibility of using the present perfect instead of the preterite – is a very noticeable feature of Early High German. This change gave the German verbal system two possibilities of expressing states of affairs with the same time reference.

According to this study, the present perfect is a polyfunctional category carrying not only the perfect but also the preterite reading, which can express the same semantics as the preterite: E,R<S. The two variants coexisted in the 16th century. The analysis is based on a text corpus containing forty political pamphlets belonging to different text types from the period 1509-1552 and considers the distribution of the two tenses according to verbal lexeme, situation type, inflectional class, voice, person, sentence type and the presence of temporal adverbials. Some textual-based factors are also studied.

Although the preterite is gradually being replaced by the present perfect, it is the preferred tense for the expression of E,R<S in the corpus, accounting for 69% of the data. The highest proportion of preterites is found with the verb sprechen and with the temporal adverb da/do (especially in combination with each other), in temporal clauses (particularly when initiated by da/do and als), in clauses of result and in clauses with modal verbs. High proportions of present perfect verb phrases with preterite readings correlate with second-person subjects, interrogative sentences and adverbials with calendar references. While the preterite is the pure narrative tense, the textual analysis also shows that the proportion of present perfect verb phrases are higher at the beginning of texts and when historical events are being interpreted, evaluated and judged.

Igualdad de género y sexismo en la música comercial hispanoamericana2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This work aims to relate Spanish America music with the research from Glick et Al (2000) in their study Beyond prejudice as simple antipathy, where they conclude that the level of sexism in a society correlates to that country's gender equality. To analyze this relationship, the ranking published by the UN on gender equality between countries has been used as source and the Spanish-American country that occupies the first place in the ranking in gender equality and the country that occupies the last were selected. Then, the first three top selling songs in these two countries have been analyzed to find out if the sexist content of these songs could differ, and thus see this correlation with the study by Glick et al (2000). The data obtained did not match with the first of the conclusions reached in said study regarding the correlation between the UN gender equality index and sexism in society. However, other conclusions, also stated in the aforementioned study, have matched due to a coincidence perhaps, for instance, in the type of sexist expressions. In the country with a better position in gender equality, the most successful songs had a greater number of hostile expressions against women. This could possibly be explained that as women achieve greater gender equality in society, they are also seen as a threat by some men and are consequently discriminated against in a hostile way, either by treating them as an object or by accusing them of using their feminine power against men. The conclusions coincidences between the present work and Glik et al (2000) work are been considered fortuitous.

    Abstract [en]

Aurora von Konigsmarck and Eva Margaretha Frolich, two noblewomen of German descent in late seventeenth-century Sweden, were both influenced by currents in contemporary theology and piety. Aurora von Konigsmarck, her sister, and two of their female cousins formed a circle around the Swedish queen Ulrica Eleonora (the elder). Together they wrote strongly emotional religious poetry in German, which is preserved in an exquisite volume in the Uppsala University Library.Eva Margaretha Frolich expected the Swedish king Charles XI to play a central role in the imminent apocalyptic drama and become the ruler of the world. After she had been exiled from Sweden, she propagated for these views in a number of tracts published in Amsterdam. The present article explores some important paratextual features in Nordischer weyrauch', the manuscript collection of religious poetry written in Aurora von Konigsmarck's hand, and in the works by Eva Margaretha Frolich. The discussion shows the importance of paratextual analysis for the interpretation of texts from the literary and intellectual culture of early modern Europe.

    Abstract [en]

The doctrine of the seven source-spirits is a central element in Jacob Bohme's thought. His first book, Morgen Rote im auffgang (1612), contains a detailed discussion of the origin, development, and the function(s) of the source-spirits as the foundation of all reality. In this article, the author uses concepts from Aristotle's Politics to explore how Bohme utilizes ideas of political organization to describe how reality developed in stages from original harmony to the discord of this world.

Maria Aurora von Königsmarck, Amalia Wilhelmina von Königsmarck, Ebba Maria De la Gardie und Johanna Eleonora De la Gardie. Nordischer Weÿraúch. Ein exklusiver Geschenkband mit geistlicher Lyrik. Edition, Kommentar und Kontextualisierung von Bo Andersson2022Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Nordi∫cher Weÿraúch oder Zú∫ammen Ge∫úchte andachten vom Schwedi∫chen Fraúen Zimmer (Nordic incense or collected devotions from the room(s) of the queen at the Swedish court) is one of the most beautiful books in the Uppsala University Library. The manuscript, written in the hand of Aurora von Königsmarck around 1690, contains twenty-two religious poems in German. They were composed by herself, her sister Amalia Wilhelmina, and their cousins Ebba Maria and Johanna Eleonora De la Gardie. There is also one poem signed with the initials A.M.G., but her identity has never been disclosed. The young countesses von Königsmarck and De la Gardie belonged to the highest ranks of the Swedish nobility. There is very clear evidence that the book was a personal and exclusive gift to the Swedish queen Ulrika Eleonora the Elder, married to King Charles XI.

The goal of the present edition is twofold: Volume 1 contains the poems in facsimile and with a diplomatic transcription. Volume 2 brings a commentary and extensive contextual analyses of the poems and the exquisitely bound manuscript. These contextualizations comprise courtly, political, religious, literary, linguistic, socio- and gender-historical perspectives.
