    Abstract [en]

The present Bachelor thesis deals with the portrayals of evil in the two novels Dvärgen (The Dwarf) and Bödeln (The Hangman), both written by Swedish author Pär Lagerkvist and published in the first half of the twentieth century. The theoretical starting point of the thesis is based on a text centered analysis in which I will assume that the fictional characters can be treated as if they were real. In two separate analyses of how evil is portrayed and what functions it can fill, I illuminate a number of examples of how evil is expressed in the narratives. I also show that evil can be portrayed as something that creates meaning within the framework of the literary texts.

Animal and Human Subjectivity in Cixous' Algerian narratives2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the place of the human and the animal in Hélène Cixous' work. It takes the figure of Fips, the dog of the Cixous family that she writes about in her autobiographical narratives, as a starting point. By thinking through this figure, I argue, Cixous analyses the dehumanizing logic of colonialism and anti-Semitism in Algeria and develops her own response to it, arguing for human relationality and animal corporeality. The paper shows that Cixous’ primal encounter with Fips produces a stigma that, belatedly, ruptures the barrier between herself and this specific dog; its dehiscence reveals a profound animal humanity generated by suffering, finitude, and compassion. The lesson Cixous learns from the memory of the Dog is how to become ‘more human’. This becoming is also an assault on the false humanism of the colonial project, on the closed gates as markers of colonial dehumanization and racialized social exclusion.

Assault on the Borders: Hélène Cixous on Animals and the Human2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Despite the continual displacement of nearly every established conception of the human, the figure of the human remains a powerful idea for political and ethical theorizing. In the era of human rights, the language of dehumanization has become a dominant frame for accounting for and criticizing a wide range of abuses and social harms. Likewise, the human has come to mark a status that promises protection from the dehumanizing effects of violence, discrimination and other modes of injustice. Cixous’ recent work on the concept have contributed to this discussion by providing an analysis of the borders between what we call human and inhuman and by pointing to the precarious conditions of hospitality towards other beings (human and nonhuman). This paper examines the place of the human and animals in Cixous’ work. It takes the figure of Fips, the dog of the Cixous family in Algiers, as a starting point. By thinking through this figure, Cixous analyses the dehumanizing logic of colonialism and anti-Semitism in Algeria and develops her own response to it, arguing for human relationality and animal corporeality. The paper shows that Cixous’ relationship with Fips produces a stigma that, belatedly, disrupt the barrier between herself and this specific dog. The lesson Cixous learns from revivifying the memory of the Dog is how to become ‘more human’. This becoming is also an assault on the false humanism of the colonial project, on the closed Gates as markers of colonial dehumanization and racialized social exclusion. The lesson of hospitality Cixous learns by another primal event: the resurrection of Fips in the form of another animal – the unexpected arrival of a cat (Thea) that puts conditional hospitality into question simply by demanding (and giving) an unconditional hospitality.

Franz Kafka’s and Hannah Arendt’s perceptions of membership in a human community2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the complex, paradoxical and tortuous relationship between human, nonhuman and inhuman in the fiction of Franz Kafka and the philosophy of Hannah Arendt in connection with the issues of the ethical importance of being human and the political processes that produces the ideological concept of “the human.” Whereas Arendt, as a philosopher, is especially concerned with the legal or quasi-legal norms that should entitle every subject, even a stateless refugee, to appear as a member in a political community, Kafka, as a literary writer, analyzes the social norms of “imagination” that determine whether a human being appears to fellow human beings as a member of the human community at all.

    Abstract [en]

This article examines the place of human and animal subjectivityin two autobiographically informed texts by Hélène Cixous. It takesher view on the word ‘human’ and the figure of Fips, the dog ofthe Cixous family, as a point of departure. By thinking through thisfigure, I argue, Cixous analyses the dehumanizing logic of colonialismand anti-Semitism in Algeria and develops her own responseto such kinds of political evils, arguing for human relationality andanimal corporeality. The article shows that Cixous’ meeting withFips creates a stigma that, belatedly, breaks through the barrierbetween herself and the dog; the reopening of the wound takesplace in a poetical writing that reveals an intense ‘animal humanity’formed by communal suffering, finiteness, and love. The lessonCixous learns from the memory of Fips the dog is how to become‘better human’. This becoming is also an assault on the falsehumanism of the colonial project and on racialized social exlusion.

Refugees, rights and writing: An Arendtian Perspective2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Ours is a time of global institutional change. It would perhaps be premature to refer to this situation as a condition of statelessness, but there is a sense in which the modern state has lost its privileged position in the exercise of democratic politics. Partly through its own act of outsourcing and outlawing, partly through pressure from global actors and economic structures, it has assisted in creating a growing call of ‘precarious’ people around the world: migrants, refugees, stateless persons. The number of people without rights or work in Europe is growing. In political life, this group is the subject of increasingly hostile discourse on ‘illegal immigrants’ and ‘international terrorism’. This paper explores how a rereading of the work Hannah Arendt can contribute to the analytical and political task of giving an alternative meaning to the presence of this group in our societies. She shows us the stateless person as a victim subjected to a very specific form of domination; as an emblematic figure whose status exposes the contradiction of state-centered citizenship and the discourse of human rights; and as an important political actor whose protests can become visible sites of active citizenship.

    Abstract [en]

Hélène Cixous’ engagement with animals is a significant but neglected aspect of her work. In this article I trace one specific character among her animals, Fips, a dog she had when she was living in Algiers during the late 1940s. By reflecting on this figure, I outline the way the dehumanising logic of colonialism and anti-Semitism are critiqued by Cixous. I lift up her themes of relationality and corporeality as constructive for animal studies. Taking the work of Jacques Derrida as a starting point, the article shows how Cixous’ primal encounter with Fips produces a wound that, belatedly, ruptures the barriers between herself and this dog; its dehiscence reveals Fips’ ‘profound animal humanity’ generated by shared suffering, finitude, and love. The lesson Cixous learns from revivifying the memory of this dog is, I suggest, how to become more human. The ‘humanity’ of the dog is the capacity to see and indeed love outside preconceived ideas: ‘Perhaps the irony is that we are never more human than when we are dogs.’ Becoming more human is an assault on the borders of racialised exclusion and a challenge to the false humanism of the colonial project.

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of the thesis is to investigate the possibility of bridging the dichotomy between Islam and the criteria of modern society by means of reinterpreting the principles (foundations) of Islam. The reformists Abdolkarim Soroush, Sedigheh Vasmaghi and Tariq Ramadan seek to prove that the methods keeping strictly within the boundaries of tradition interpreting the Quran along the lines of previous generations is not necessarily the sole means of coming to an understanding of the Quran’s message. The thesis discusses these reinterpreters’ critique of tradition and their arguments for the possibility of uniting the principles of Islam with the prerequisites of modern society. In conjunction with this, the question whether modern society presupposes a strict division between the private and the public sphere is problematized from a point of departure in Jeffrey Stout’s Democracy and Tradition. The thesis attempts to show potential conceptions of a modern society based on the principles of Islam.

    Abstract [en]

This study deals with the way how people think about life after death from the perspective of individualization. Individualization is something that affects all aspects of society, especially in

Sweden, which is of the most individualized countries. It also affects how people think about their own death.

I have compared what people think about life after death with five theologians who have different views; Per Block, Sallie McFague, Krister Stendahl, Maurice Wiles and Jürgen Moltmann.

I have compared the difference between individualism and individualization, and

formulated some problems regarding how to think of individualism in terms of good and bad. Finally, I have finally discussed how I think Svenska kyrkan, the Church of Sweden, should meet the individualization, individualism and people´s opinion about life after death.

The main question of the essay is partly unanswered because there is very little material and studies made about life after death contra individualization. One conclusion of my study, however, that I have reached is that people are allowed to choose freely nowadays, and that leads to a big difference in the system of beliefs. Svenska kyrkan should be sensitive about the change in society and be open for discussions. At the same time I would suggest that Svenska kyrkan should be clear about the different theological stands and be ready to tell what they believe.

    Abstract [en]

Although the ideal of liberal neutrality remains common in political philosophy, some authors argue that moral judgments are indispensable in public decisions. In particular, Michael J. Sandel has proposed that the question of legalizing same-sex marriage cannot be settled without ideas about the value and purpose of marriage. In this study, the final debate in the Swedish parliament about gender-neutral marriage is analyzed in terms of members of parliament’s opinions on state neutrality. It is shown that the ideal of moral neutrality are either rejected or accepted, but in the latter case the value-neutral ideal is not sustained throughout the course of the debate. Instead, members of parliament invoke ideas about the moral value of marriage and same-sex relationships. This adds some credibility to Sandel’s opinion that important public decisions rely on conceptions on what constitutes a good life. However, the ultimate success of Sandel’s argument depends on whether state recognition of civil marriage in itself can be justified on value-neutral grounds.

The New testament texts I refer to as the texts about women’s subordination are: 1 Cor. 11:2–16, 1 Cor. 14:33–40, Eph. 5:21–6:9, Col. 3:18–4:1, 1 Tim. 2:8–3:15, Tit. 2:1–10 and 1 Peter 2:11–3:9. The material I analyze is exegetical commentaries, but also other material that reflects the exegetical debate about the subordination texts. The material is both Swedish and international. The purpose of this study is threefold: First, to examine and analyze how the New testament texts about women’s subordination have been interpreted in exegetical literature during the last 60 years. Secondly, to discern whether women’s subordination function as a hermeneutical category in the interpretations of the texts. And thirdly, to – with the conclusions of the investigation pursued and my analytical tools and theoretical considerations as points of departure – discuss and propose criteria for interpretation of biblical texts.

With the term women’s subordination as a hermeneutical category I mean that women’s subordination can be viewed as a structure, or a motive, that influences the texts as well as the interpretation. This hermeneutical category functions in a way that women become “the Others” in texts and interpretations. To theoretically discuss the meaning of woman/women as “the Other/Others” I, for example, examine the work of Simone de Beauvoir. In the material I find patterns for interpretation. One of these patterns is that subordination is interpreted as an expression of love and a response to love. I propose four criteria for the critical exegetical work and one criterion for biblical interpretation in a broader sense. United Nations declaration of the Human Rights from 1948 and the convention on women from 1979, expresses the equal value and freedom of every human being – woman or man.

United Nations declaration of Human Rights may function as a criterion in biblical interpretation, a criterion that destabilize women’s subordination as a hermeneutical category and avoids the reproduction and production of androcentrism.

    Abstract [sv]

Ethics and the management of spent nuclear fuel2015In: Journal of Risk Research, ISSN 1366-9877, E-ISSN 1466-4461, Vol. 18, no 3, p. 392-405Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In March 2011, Swedish Nuclear Fuel Management Co (SKB) submitted an application to the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM), and the Nacka Land and Environmental court to build a repository for high-level spent nuclear fuel (SNF) in the municipality of osthammar. The purpose of this paper is (1) to present the KBS-3 method for the direct disposal of high-level SNF and the debate about the method, (2) to analyze the ethical principles involved, and (3) how to resolve possible conflict between these principles. The paper is divided in three parts. Part 1 contains a presentation of the KBS-3 method and different items in the debate about it. Part 2 concerns the ethical dimension of the method and the different ethical principles that can be discerned explicitly or implicitly in the discussion and the regulatory framework that informs the discussion. Part 3 contains an analysis of the conflicting principles and how this conflict can be resolved. For example, it is argued that some kind of ethical meta-norm might be formulated and that the ethical principles involved in the management of SNF might be assessed in reference to such ethical meta-norm. Finally, it is discussed if and how the conflict between different principles for the management of SNF might be resolved through closer consideration of the relationship between ethical principles and technical practice.
