Curating a historical source corpus of 20th century patient organization periodicals.2024In: Proceedings of the Huminfra Conference (HiC 2024), 2024Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Acting out Disease: How Patient Organizations Shaped Modern Medicine (ActDisease) explores the history of patient organizations in 20th century Europe. By combining traditional historiographic methods with text mining techniques, the project aims to shed light on how patient organizations co-constructed concepts of and management of disease. Part of the project is to digitize print sources and build a digital corpus for historical text mining. The corpus consists of periodical publications from selected British, French, German and Swedish patient organizations, a type of material that poses a number of challenges in scan quality, layout, and lack of consistency. This paper discusses the technical process of building the ActDisease corpus from digitizing patient organization periodicals to OCR post-processing. It touches upon the methodological questions and challenges of curating a corpus of fragmented and heterogeneous historical source material tailored to a specific project.

    Abstract [sv]

Between responsibility and escape: The future as an object of knowledge in the humanities and social sciences2024In: European Journal of Social Theory, ISSN 1368-4310, E-ISSN 1461-7137, Vol. 27, no 2, p. 174-190Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The future has been a central object of inquiry in the twentieth-century social theory. In this essay, a first generation of intellectual concern with the future is represented in the post-war turn towards a hermeneutics of time and reflections on modernity in the writings of conceptual historian Reinhart Koselleck and philosopher Paul Ricoeur. In their writings, the future was both essential reflection on the limits of human existence and a fundamental liberation of political potential. As such they situated the future in what was defined as historical time. A second wave of scholarly thinking came in the explosion of a post-war field of futures studies. The future, to post-war futurists, was a loss of telos and an indication of the fundamental immaturity and hubris of the human subject. History was a cumbersome remnant of past destruction, and the imperative was to move beyond. In a third generation, currently taking form, the future is considered as part of a postmodern, indeed posthuman existence. 'There is no such thing as humanity' makes human history impossible and opens the question of whether it is even possible to engage with the future without a clear anchoring in the history of what it is to be human.

    Abstract [en]

This timely edited volume gather’s a number of Sweden’s leading historians who specialize on the profound transformations of the late 20th Century. Each chapter starts from an image, and at the center is the “market turn” – a multifaceted, but at the same time distinct historical process through which the market as an institution, an ideal, and a metaphor has become a focal point of social life. How did this happen?

The market turn left a big mark on Swedish politics, but it also changed people’s everyday lives, their language use, and frame of reference. The book shows that the market cannot be understood as a monolith – there have been several different market concepts and visions in circulation. Some overlapping and mutually reinforcing, others in direct competition. Together they have interacted with different political and intellectual traditions, from the “people’s home capitalism” of the Welfare state era to libertarian and neoliberal understandings.

The edited volume sheds light on dramatic ruptures, but also on important continuities. The book reveals the often overlooked social, political, and cultural alliances of the market turn, and renders clear the sometimes large differences between the actor’s intentions and the actual consequences.

Niche development: the International Foundation for Science and the road to Sweden2023In: British Journal for the History of Science, ISSN 0007-0874, E-ISSN 1474-001X, Vol. 56, no 4, p. 553-566Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the crowded landscape of conferences and organizations within which the International Foundation for Science (IFS) was shaped in the early 1970s. The IFS aimed to support scientists from developing countries, circumventing the bureaucracy of established international organizations such as UNESCO and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The new foundation was a potential rival to such institutions, which ironically provided the conditions essential to its emergence. Their conferences, board meetings and assemblies, where scientists and policy makers convened, provided key infrastructure for the development of the IFS. This infrastructure appears simultaneously both as an almost invisible feature of international science policy, and as a political problem. The solution to this problem was Stockholm: a geographical place that was also placeless, occupying both national and international status, desirable in its political, scientific and geographical neutrality. In an organizational context, academies and scientific societies who found their role circumscribed by existing international institutions used the IFS to argue for their particular role and expertise in funding and promoting scientific development. Geographically and politically, neutral Sweden provided a setting which was located between East and West, and which added to the country's own reputation for championing the causes of developing nations.

Navigating between Risk Discourses: On the Early Adoption and Development of Obstetrical Ultrasound Imaging in Lund, ca. 1960–19802024In: Histories of Fetal Knowledge Production in Sweden: Medicine, Politics, and Public Controversy, 1530-2020 / [ed] Solveig Jülich, Leiden: Brill Academic Publishers, 2024, p. 329-351Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Soon after the invention of ultrasound visualization as a method for fetal diagnostics in Glasgow, Scotland, in the late 1950s, the nascent technology was transferred to Lund in southern Sweden, where its application was further developed by the gynecologist Bertil Sundén. This chapter explores how the early adoption of diagnostic ultrasound within obstetrics and gynecology in Lund was dependent on several factors: networking and personal international contacts, a preexisting local interest in diagnostic ultrasound and similar technologies, and access—possible thanks to Swedish legislation and local circumstances—to women undergoing abortion; but also, not least, on Sundén’s ability to navigate strategically among several different risk discourses. Some of those centered on ultrasound itself as a risky technology, while others presented it as a technology for risk management. Further on, this maneuvering also helped to facilitate the establishment of obstetrical ultrasound visualization as a harmless, routine procedure in Sweden.

Rays of Death and Visions of Life: Ultrasound Narratives, Risk Evaluations, and Prenatal Imaging2024In: Technology and culture, ISSN 0040-165X, E-ISSN 1097-3729, Vol. 65, no 3, p. 933-965Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Diagnostic ultrasound visualization was initially developed and introduced as a more benign alternative to X-rays and is today established as a harmless routine procedure and tool for risk management, but as this article shows, it took several decades to overcome the popular notion that ultrasound itself was a high-risk technology, a potentially deadly weapon. Swedish newspaper material provides a window into internationally circulated narratives portraying ultrasound as both a frightening and promising phenomenon. These ideas also constituted an important context for risk assessment during the early adoption and development of obstetrical ultrasound imaging, as shown by the case of Lund, Sweden, where the still-experimental technology was first imported from Scotland in the early 1960s. The article repositions ultrasound in the history of risk and risk management in modern societies and also sheds new light on the history of ultrasound visualization by situating it in a broader context of media culture.

Visual Wonders and Shocks: Images of Human Fetuses in Television Programs on Abortion and Fetal Research, 1969-19882024In: Histories of Fetal Knowledge Production in Sweden: Medicine, Politics, and Public Controversy, 1530-2020 / [ed] Solveig Jülich, Leiden: Brill Academic Publishers, 2024, p. 352-375Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter explores and compares the different uses of images of human fetuses in a number of Swedish television programs dealing with the controversial issue of fetal research in the period from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. Drawing on previous discussions on fetal imagery and ‘the public fetus,’ the analysis focuses on the different representational strategies used in a sample of programs produced during the era and reactions to the images in other media. The chapter begins with a discussion of a controversial television program on abortion broadcast in 1969 and proceeds to discuss three different examples of programs reporting on the issue of fetal research in the 1980s. The conclusion is that images that—in contrast to Lennart Nilsson’s famous images—represented the fetus as dead or dying met with much criticism in the decades following the 1960s. Hence, they were generally avoided in television. Moreover, the chapter highlights the transnational circulation of images of fetuses during the era and discusses how fetal images originating from US sources were understood in the Swedish context.

Rethinking the Public Fetus: Historical Perspectives on the Visual Culture of Pregnancy2024Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Exploring a wide variety of visualizations of pregnancy and fetuses through 300 years of history, this timely volume offers a fresh look at the influential feminist concept of the "public fetus."

Images of pregnant and fetal bodies are today visible everywhere. Through ultrasound screenings at maternity clinics, birth videos on social media platforms, or antiabortion propaganda, visualizations of pregnancy are available and accessible as never before. The origins of today's visual culture of pregnancy are often traced back to the 1960s, when Swedish photographer Lennart Nilsson's stunning photographs of human development were published in Life magazine and widely disseminated over the world. But the public display of pregnant and fetal bodies actually has a much longer and more complex history.

In this timely book, a group of scholars from a range of disciplines explores this multifaceted history by highlighting visualizations of pregnant and fetal bodies in a variety of geographical and cultural contexts, spanning a period of more than 300 years. By reengaging with the crucial concept of the "public fetus," coined by feminist scholars in the 1980s and 1990s, the volume aims to revitalize the scholarly discussion on the visual culture of pregnancy and demonstrate the constructed nature of fetal images. Including chapters on a wide variety of representations in different media, such as wet specimen collections, papier-mâché models, sculpture, film, and photography, the book provides a much-needed argument against the widespread notion of the "universal" fetus.

Thalidomide in the Welfare State: Rehabilitation and Contested Normality2024In: Histories of Fetal Knowledge Production in Sweden: Medicine, Politics, and Public Controversy, 1530-2020 / [ed] Solveig Jülich, Leiden: Brill Academic Publishers, 2024, p. 286-305Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter addresses the Swedish management of the thalidomide scandal in the 1960s. It provides a brief overview of the scandal and its various consequences, such as changes in pharmaceutical regulation and amendments to abortion legislation, as well as surveillance operations organized by the National Board of Medicine in order to find all affected individuals. It also discusses aspects of the ambitious rehabilitation program, launched in 1962, which aimed at assessing the impairments of each child and providing suitable help, often in the form of prosthetic limbs. The leading principle of the program—normalization—is analyzed through a lens of biopolitics. The push for normalization had dual consequences. One was that the children were mainly cared for in family homes, instead of being institutionalized. The other was that the urge for normality also affected how the children’s physical bodies were perceived and adjusted to resemble more ‘able’ bodies.

'It wasn't what I was suited for': regretful mothers negotiating their reproductive decision and mother role2024In: Medical Humanities, ISSN 1468-215X, E-ISSN 1473-4265, Vol. 50, no 1, p. 70-76Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study contributes to our understanding of why women without a longing to have children and who, in theory, have the possibility of refraining from parenthood still become mothers. The article is based on in-depth interviews with six Swedish mothers who never longed to have children in the first place. It illustrates howthey make sense of their reproductive decision-making process and their current role as a mother. The analysis shows how reproductive decision-making is highly influenced by cultural perceptions of proper womanhood and the idea that every woman has an innate longingto have children, as well as other people’s wishes and pressure. Although the mothers did their best to align with motherhood expectations, their narratives show that they are still oriented towards non-motherhood on an emotional level. This manifests through their experiences of existential regret about having children. Hence, the mothers’ understandings of their path to motherhood reveal a complex conflict between outer expectations and inner wishes, which destabilises the idea of reproduction as a promise of happiness.

Regretting parenthood in a family friendly, ‘gender equal’ society: accounts from Swedish online forums2023In: Journal of Family Studies, ISSN 1322-9400, E-ISSN 1839-3543, Vol. 29, no 5, p. 2195-2212Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the past decades, parents have used online forums to discuss challenges associated with parenthood, seeking support from other parents as well as professional advice. A highly sensitive topic discussed in these forums is regret about having children. Previous studies from various contexts have highlighted how regret, as expressed online, is often connected to difficulties of living up to and identifying with ideals of parenting, and that parenthood leads to feelings of exhaustion, entrapment and a negative self-image. In this article, I analyze how regret is expressed in two major Swedish online forums, including accounts from 142 parents. Sweden is a country that is often highlighted internationally as a pioneer in gender equality, with laws that protect sexual and reproductive rights and family- friendly policies that support parents in combining family life and work life. In light of this, I focus on the different decisions related to parenthood that people regret, the challenges and disappointments that family life has brought to parents, and the consequences that parenthood has had on their lives. I show how gender-equal parenting ideals are highly present in the discussions, and how they coexist and conflict with more traditional parenting behaviours and patterns.

    Abstract [en]

All Roads Lead to the Snow-Capped Mountains: An Examination of Snow in Norwegian Nation Building During the Late 19th Century. Uppsala University: Dep. of History of Science and Ideas, Bachelor of Art’s thesis, spring term 2024. This essay examines three literary works by Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen. The purpose is to explore the ways in which snow played a part in Norwegian nationalism at the end of the 19th century. At the time that Nansen’s books were originally published, Norway had been at the political and cultural mercy of its neighboring nations for the past five centuries. An ambition for complete independence was brewing, and Fridtjof Nansen became part of a group of intellectuals tasked with creating a new national identity, one that was constructed through the creation of cultural borders and visions of a nation aligned with a perceived glorious past. National romanticism had a strong grip on Europe in general during this time, and infusing the national identity with a romanticized nature was commonplace. Norway is no exception to this, but the argument put forth here is that snow played a particular part in creating the new nation, aside from the rest of nature. Fridtjof Nansen personified, through his own activism and resistance to the unions, the Norwegian identity, and became in a sense synonymous with it. Through his personal relationship with snow, snow became personal to the nation.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This article provides an account of the making of KBLab, the data lab at the National Library of Sweden (KB). The first part of the article offers an evaluative discussion of the work involved in establishing KBLab as both a physical and a digital site for researchers to use KB’s digital collections at previously unimaginable scales. Beyond explaining how the lab aligns with KB’s broader mission as a national library, we also elaborate upon the design of the technical setup and the processes of research coordination that the operation of a library lab presumes. The second part discusses how KBLab has deployed the library’s collections as data to produce high quality Swedish AI models, which constitute a significant new form of digital research infrastructure. We situate this development work in the context of uneven AI coverage for smaller languages, and consider how the lab’s models have contributed to the making of important AI infrastructure for the Swedish language. The conclusion raises the possibilities and challenges involved in continuing the type of library-based AI development we have initiated at KBLab.

Swedish Erasmus students' valuations of study destinations: How countries, cities, and institutions relate to choices and experiences2024In: Globalisation, Societies and Education, ISSN 1476-7724, E-ISSN 1476-7732Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Based on a survey of Swedish participants in the Erasmus+ exchange programme from the 2014 and 2015 application years, our study uses specific Multiple Correspondence Analysis to explore students’ valuations of their study destinations across different scales – country, city, and institution. Our findings indicate that places were valued based on three types of logic – academic, cultural, and labour market – where each type of logic emphasised each scale differently. First, the choice of the receiving institution relates to the country of destination. Students who primarily valued culture, language, and geographical location were overrepresented in Mediterranean countries, while students who emphasised the quality, reputation, and learning offer ofthe receiving institution were overrepresented in the Nordic countries. Second, the city matters in that students clearly preferred institutions inlively metropolises, which had a clear advantage over other mid-sizedor smaller cities. Thirdly, the higher education institutions themselves play a role in study abroad choices. If the institutions are prestigious and high-ranked, this can outweigh a disadvantageous location. These types of logic tend to overlap so that the most dominant and sought-after countries are more likely to have highly attractive cities and metropolitan regions where highly ranked higher education institutionsare often also found.

Den moraliska marknaden: Marknadsförfattarnas skildring av det ekonomiska livet 1839-18602024Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

During the 18th century, the publishing of literature was commercialised in Sweden. The process was intimately connected to the rise of the modern novel and paved the wave for a new type of author. These authors wrote for a large audience and portrayed the everyday life of the ordinary man, not just kings and knights as in the old tales and poems. Historians and literary scholars have recently argued that the 18th century novel can be a productive source of economic knowledge by showing the inner motivations and moral ideas connected to the material world. Previous studies have argued that the 18th century novel can be viewed as moral guidelines for consumption. In this thesis, I argue something more profound: that the novel can be seen as moral guidelines for the whole of the economic life at the dawn of the modern-day economy.

This thesis analyses novels, written between 1839-1860, by three of the most sold and most influential of the new novelists in the form of Carl Jonas Love Almqvist, Emilie Flygare-Carlén and Fredrika Bremer. By using Luc Boltanski's and Laurent Thévenot's theory of justification I show how the novels inscribed different moral ideas into economic life. The study shows that the idea of the moral merchant and moral market is prevalent in most of the novels. They speak to a need for moral market actors to counteract immoral and selfish actors.

Any Witness Competent to Testify: Witnessing Practices at the 1967 Russell Tribunal on American War Crimes in Vietnam2024Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In 1967, an array of prominent intellectuals, artists, politicians, and activists from across the world came together to investigate the ongoing war in Vietnam. Modelled on the post-Second World War Nuremberg trial but with no official mandate or legitimacy, the Russell Tribunal appropriated the form and language of international law to document, judge, and dramatically publicize American actions in Vietnam. The Russell Tribunal’s immediate aim was to incite mass resistance against the war and thus exert political pressure on Washington. The ultimate aim was to stop the war and advance national self-determination in Vietnam and elsewhere. To achieve these ends Tribunal organizers assembled a diverse plurality of witnesses who gave testimony at public sessions in Scandinavia. Although the Russell Tribunal pioneered new protest tactics and generated a vast body of testimonial evidence, it is largely overlooked in antiwar movement research and in witness studies. When mentioned, the Tribunal is often described as a failure, while its witness testimony has remained unexamined.

This dissertation reconsiders the Russell Tribunal’s impact and legacy by delving into its witnessing practices. It analyzes how witnessing was deployed as a form of antiwar knowledge production and as a political device for anti-imperial resistance, and shows how tactics and tools now often associated with human rights work emerged in a wholly different ideological framework – one in which freedom and rights, violence and complicity, harm and victimhood were conceived in a collective register. The dissertation also proposes that the Russell Tribunal’s often contradictory rhetoric and practices stemmed not from its mixing of the political and the legal, as scholars have previously suggested, but from its simultaneous pursuit of mainstream legitimacy and radical clout, leading to a tension between respectable and revolutionary tenors that pervaded all Tribunal activities.

The dissertation identifies four main witness categories to testify before the Russell Tribunal: experts, on-site investigators, perpetrators, and victims. It unpacks their functions and effects at Tribunal hearings while also tracing their histories and logics in war crimes trials, political activism, transitional justice initiatives, and human rights work across the global twentieth century. In so doing, the dissertation sheds light on why, how, and to what effect different types of witnesses are deployed in response to mass violence – whether to prosecute war criminals, counter state narratives, or mobilize resistance to war, atrocity, and injustice.

"Vitamins (Whatever They Are)": Nutrition's Developing Role as a Biopolitical Object During The First World War2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study discusses the developing role of nutrition as a biopolitical object during the First World War. As research into food led to the discovery of vitamins in 1912, the world would shortly  erupt into global warfare thereafter in 1914. Modern, global warfare tested the limits of food production. American and British authorities worked towards new methods for combating malnutrition and ensuring quality food could be allotted to civilians and soldiers alike. Research into vitamins and nutrition in general continued during the war, and this new food model quickly became vital for American and British civilians and soldiers alike- who came to increasingly rely upon vegetables and substitutes for wheat, in the form of alternative grains, and meat in the form of beans. Milk continued to be held in highest regard by doctors and governments -owing to its high nutritional content, including the two vitamins discovered in 1912. At the same time, soldiers had their rations bolstered by fresher produce on the Western Front, while in the Middle East, germinated peas proved to be effective at warding off scurvy and beriberi- even where supply lines were at their longest. These efforts, pushed by doctors and governments working in collaboration, resulted in a profound shift in the way governments treated the realm of food, in all its aspects, but also in matters of the health of their populations. This in turn altered how conscious the average person was of what they ate-owing to the greater understanding of quality food and healthy eating during, and directly after the First World War.

‘Pelves of Various Nations’: Race and Sex in a Mid-nineteenth-Century Obstetric Collection2024In: Histories of Fetal Knowledge Production in Sweden: Medicine, Politics, and Public Controversy, 1530-2020 / [ed] Solveig Jülich, Leiden: Brill Academic Publishers, 2024, p. 159-183Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines how Magnus Retzius, an obstetrician based in Stockholm and brother of prominent anatomist Anders Retzius, mobilized social networks in order to create a privately owned obstetrical collection, containing female pelvis specimens categorized according to race and nation. While previous scholarship has investigated the making of Anders Retzius’s collection of skulls at the Karolinska Institute, his brother’s collection and the relations between the two are less known. The author demonstrates that Magnus Retzius’s collection emerged within the context of Swedish nation-building during the first half of the nineteenth century, and shows how the pelvis specimens in the collection materialized intersecting concepts of sex and race. These concepts, in turn, were used to construct the notion of a ‘Swedish people’ with a shared past. Furthermore, the chapter sheds light on tensions between the Retzius brothers’ collections, and how they influenced ideas about sex and race.

Developing education in environmental health and medicine focusing on neurology: Initiatives in Sweden (the UPRISE model), France, and Turkey2024In: Journal of the Neurological Sciences, ISSN 0022-510X, E-ISSN 1878-5883, Vol. 463, article id 123117Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

The role of environmental factors in neurological disorders constitutes a topic of increasing importance. Teaching in European universities should expand and update this field gaining future health professionals including adjacent disciplines.

    Aim

To describe recent efforts to create courses that cover crucial interdisciplinary content that we believe should be included in modern education, and to adapt modern pedagogic strategies.

    Methods

In collaboration with RISE (Rencontres Internationales Santé Environnement), elective courses focused on Environmental Health and Medicine (EHM) were developed, in France, Sweden, and Turkey. The courses combined classic teaching methods and new pedagogic and digital solutions to create environment-related health awareness and facilitate future interprofessional collaboration in this field.

    Results

UPRISE is an innovative elective course introduced in 2020 in Sweden's Uppsala University with the participation of lecturers from several countries and aim to recruit students from different universities. A total of 45, mainly female students (68%), participated in the course. In Strasbourg, France, a novel course on environmental medicine was held in 2019–2023 and examined 90 students, of which more than half were female. Nine graduate nurse students in Turkey attended ten seminar series focused on EHM. Overall, students expressed satisfaction with the courses.

    Conclusions

This European project for courses in higher education arising from RISE was met with appreciation and challenges from academic institutions.

However, due to considerable efforts to introduce the EHM concept, a unique compulsory course for all medical students in the second year of training started in 2023 in all French medical faculties. In 2023, UPRISE was integrated into ENLIGHT, the European University Network to promote equitable quality of Life, sustainability, and Global engagement through Higher education Transformation.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to distinguish different perceptions about reason in lutheran Sweden during the 18th century enlightenment. By analyzing the discourse in the newly established scientific academy in Stockholm, I examine how the scientist valued reason and its relation to faith and science. Further I examine during which sociopolitical and theological contexts these perceptions formed and if the discourse can be explained by Lutheranism and a religious enlightenment. The study found a generally positive attitude towards reason as it was perceived as a gift from God and an important trait inherent only to humans. Reason had its limits however but these were not expressed as negatively as Luther warned during the 16th century. While Luther expressed great skepticism towards reason, especially in the realm of theology, the scientist had a more positive attitude. With previous research, this study finds that this shift in attitude, together with utilism, could be contributed to a religious enlightenment, in which a more orthodox church embrace enlightenment ideals – such as reason – to defend their faith and find a more solid ground during pressed times when criticism against religion grew and Pietism took hold.

    Abstract [en]

The increasing availability of digital material and tools for large-scale computational analysis has produced a growing interest in big data approaches in the humanities and social sciences. However, the vital role of data curation as a precondition for such projects remains underappreciated. This paper details the work of KBLab at the National Library of Sweden in testing AI tools to help curate the digitized newspaper archive and make it more amenable to quantitative, machine learning-based research. It provides a description of the library’s newspaper data to offer orientation to researchers interested in the material, before turning to recount the results of our exploration with automated data curation. It concludes by sketching possible next steps for these exploratory efforts, as well as situating this project within a broader recent turn to conceptualize and prioritize the notion of data readiness. Its principal argument is in drawing attention to data curation as an essential part of any digital research project, not something prior to or external from the research process.

Applying machine learning to media analysis improves our understanding of forest conflicts2024In: Land use policy, ISSN 0264-8377, E-ISSN 1873-5754, Vol. 144, article id 107254Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Conflicts over the management and governance of forests seem to be increasing. Previous media studies in this area have largely focused on analysing the portrayal of specific conflicts. This study aims to review how a broad range of forest conflicts are portrayed in the Swedish media, analysing their temporal, spatial, and relational dimensions. We applied topic modelling, a machine learning approach, to analyse 53,600 articles published in the Swedish daily press between 2012 and 2022. We identified 916 topics, of which 94 were of interest for this study. Our results showed ten areas of forest conflicts: hunting and fishing (35 % of total coverage), energy (24 %), recreation and tourism (11 %), nature conservation (8 %), forest damages (6 %), international issues (5 %), forestry (5 %), reindeer husbandry (4 %), media and politics (2 %), and mining (1 %). The overall coverage of forest conflicts increased significantly over the study period, potentially reflecting an actual increase in forest conflicts. Some of the conflicts were continuously reported upon over time, while the coverage of others exhibited seasonal or event -related patterns. Four conflicts received most of their coverage in specific regions, while others were covered across the whole of Sweden. A relational analysis of the conflicts revealed three clusters of forest conflicts focused respectively on industrial, cultural, and conservation conflicts. Our results emphasise the value of using topic modelling to understand the overall patterns and trends of the media coverage of current land use conflicts, while also highlighting potential areas of emerging conflicts that may be of special interest for planners and policy -makers to monitor and manage.

Futures of the History of the Humanities: An Introduction2023In: History of Humanities, ISSN 2379-3163, Vol. 8, no 2, p. 177-187Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Over the last decade, scholarly attention has turned to the humanities’ collective past with renewed energy and sense of purpose. As a result, a new field of research, the history of the humanities, has crystalized and received broad international attention. In this forum, we take a special interest in the question of where the history of the humanities is heading. And where do we want it to go? In order to fuel discussion, six scholars have been invited to contribute their perspectives on what the future holds for the field. In our introduction, we frame these contributions by outlining the origins, current state, and potential trajectories of the new (or possibly reformed) field of research. Summarizing the ambitions of the field as well as its transdisciplinary links and influences, we reflect on why it has emerged as well as consider the larger implications for the humanities as a whole. It is argued that although the full potential of the history of the humanities is far from being reached, the very concept has functioned as an integrative platform, opening up new lines of inquiry within a larger framework. Nevertheless, as the contributions to this forum collectively make evident, there are also a number of challenges that the history of the humanities will face going forward.

Från isolering till socialisering: Formeringen av 1890-talets kvinnliga universitetsstudenters akademiska identiteter2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

An expanding field of historical study is interested in examining the connection between gendered spaces in academia and the dynamic identities available within them, inspired by the theoretical framework of the “scientific persona”. By drawing on this discussion, the thesis aims to showcase the institutional and social circumstances through which early female university students came to produce and reshape academic identities in Sweden in the 1890s. It focuses on the establishment of “Uppsala kvinnliga studentförening” (UKSF), the first local university association for women students in Sweden, thus locating the process that produces academic identities at the crossroad of individual and collective strategies and forums. To this end, the thesis analyzes UKSF’s protocols in addition to autobiographical documents by two early members, Lydia Wahlström and Gulli Petrini.

The study shows that by providing a collective forum, UKSF managed to enable a wholly new way of being a female student. This process, which shaped both collective and individual identities, was linked to socialization and assimilation. A complete assimilation through the embodiment of an available male academic persona was, however, not possible. Rather, the female students merged identities based on several repertoires. For instance, Lydia Wahlström crystallized a persona drawing on the position as president of UKSF. At times, however, she seems to have embodied male academic personae in male dominated academic spheres. The essay additionally offers approaches to analyzing the long-lasting challenge for female students to aspire an academic career.

"Mer än bara jordbruk?": En analys av efterkrigstidens debatt om lantbrukets framtid2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A New New World: Unmapping Africa in the Age of Reason2024In: Journal for the History of Knowledge, E-ISSN 2632-282X, Vol. 5Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Over the course of the eighteenth century, European maps of Africa became increasingly empty. Rivers and mountains, kingdoms and towns that had been mapped for centuries suddenly disappeared and were replaced by unmapped, blank spaces. Though historians have scrutinized the role of the blank spaces in creating and sustaining the perception of Africa’s interior as an unknown and unclaimed territory, the blanks themselves have long been understood as the bi-products of improved scientific standards. Geographers in the European Enlightenment, we have been told, cleared their maps of imaginary wonders, and drew a sharp line between the known and the unknown. This explanation for the continent’s unmapping is not, however, congruent with the empirical evidence. Though eighteenth-century geographers argued eloquently for the principled suppression of uncertain knowledge, they were no less at the mercy of conflicting reports than their predecessors had been. Leaving parts of a map blank to represent unexplored regions was similarly not their invention—it had long been a feature on maps of the New World. What was new about the blank spaces on eighteenth-century maps of Africa was not so much the blanks as such, as their application to a previously mapped part of the Old World.

Substituting Coffee and Tea in the Eighteenth Century: A Rural and Material History with Global Implications2023In: Journal of Global History, ISSN 1740-0228, E-ISSN 1740-0236, Vol. 18, no 3, p. 461-480Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article discusses the material history of coffee and tea by drawing on mid-eighteenth-century substitute recipes collected by physicians in different provinces of Sweden, applying perspectives from economic history, the history of science, medicine, and globalization. The starting point for the analysis is that a substitute can be said to reflect what are perceived as the most important properties, in terms of look, feel, taste, and scent, of the thing being copied. The products of a predominantly self-sustained agrarian world, the tea and coffee substitutes offered a distinctive rural alternative to the new exotic beverages. In terms of ecology and economy, this context encompassed large parts of central and north-eastern Europe; it also involved areas with a history of consumption that differed considerably from those of the cosmopolitan elites which have hitherto dominated the scholarship on eighteenth-century coffee and tea. The article finally suggests that the ways in which early modern substitutes were consumed and processed helped pave the way for the mass consumption of imported goods in rural areas of Europe in the following centuries.
