    Abstract [en]

    In addition to controlling the influx of light to the retina, the pupil also reacts as a result of cognitive and emotional processing. This makes it possible to use pupil dilation as an index for cognitive effort and emotional arousal. We show how an extended version of a computational model of pupil dilation can account for pupillary contagion effects where the pupil of an observer dilates upon seeing another person with dilated pupils. We also show how the model can reproduce the effects of cognitive effort in a math exercise. Furthermore, we investigate how the model can account for different explanations for the abnormal pupil response seen in individuals with or at risk for autism spectrum disorder. The reported computer simulations illustrate the usefulness of system-level models of the brain in addressing complex cognitive and emotional phenomena.

    This study shows that the Swedish ‘housewife era’ roughly occurred in 1930–1970. During the 1950s, the ratio of women’s worked hours to men’s worked hours reached a low point. In the early 1970s, it rose to above 50%. We argue that models of joint utility maximisation, assuming equal gender power relations unrestrained by cultural and institutional settings, cannot alone explain this era. The two principal structural mechanisms behind the rise of the breadwinner household were the decline of the farm household and the increased proportion of married women. Both weakened the bargaining position of women. Three results in our study weaken the claims of the joint utility maximisation model. Firstly, marriage was much more important than motherhood in determining the probability of women’s labour force participation, although the age of the child is then not taken into account. Secondly, the labour force participation of married women was similar across different social strata outside of the farm and top income households, indicating a prevalent capitalist patriarchal structure. Thirdly, women’s leisure was valued less than men’s, demonstrating that the preferences of the husband were prioritised over those of the wife.

    Abstract [en]

    The official statistics on GDP and the labour market exclude unpaiddomestic services. Yet there are good theoretical reasons why his-torians should study unpaid work. This paper reconstructs annualestimates of time use in Sweden from 1950 to 2012 amongwomen and men. It finds substantial convergence between the gen-ders in time use from the 1960s to the early 1980s. During the pe-riod of inquiry, the gender difference in total working time vanished.The double burden for women did not increase when they enteredthe labour market. The reduction in the time women spent on un-paid work is explained about equally by the shortening of the totalamount of unpaid work and by increasing male participation inhousehold chores. In 1950-1963, the reduction was explainedmainly by the decline in the making and mending of clothes athome and the spread of domestic appliances. In the 1963–1984period, instead, it was due chiefly to men’s greater participation inhousehold work. These mechanisms were largely historically con-tingent, suggesting that it is impossible to single out just one factorto explain why Sweden today has less gender inequality than othercountries.

    Abstract [en]

      Against those who have taken anthropologists to task for flirting with the "meta-narratives" of modernity, this article argues that it is incumbent on them to engage with both modernity and modernist narratives far more directly and explicitly than in the past. This holds even, or especially, for those who, in positing a notion of multiple modernities, have managed to hold modernist narrative at arm’s length, neglecting the potential fruitfulness of juxtaposing Western and non-Western experiences of what Habermas has called the project of modernity. The encounter between anthropology and modernity is generated on the one hand by changes in the lives of the subjects of ethnographic research, but the fact of these changes raises more searching questions about whether ethnographers ever studied genuinely premodern peoples and cultures. The reflexive imperative, moreover, confirms the need to recognize anthropology’s own modernist origins. Finally it is argued that it is critical modernist theory in the Hegel-Marx-Weber tradition that is the most pertinent to the ethnographic encounter and that the exercise of bringing together critical theory and ethnographic knowledge, while conflictual, produces fruitful results for both sides.     The influence of arousal on visual attention was examined in 6.5-month-old infants (N = 42) in the context of a visual search task. Phasic increases in arousal were induced with brief sounds and measured with pupil dilation. Evidence was found for an inverted U-shaped relation between pupil dilation amplitude and visual orienting, with highest likelihood of a target fixation at intermediate levels of arousal. Effects were similar for facial stimuli and simple objects. Together, these results contribute to our understanding of the relation between arousal and attention in infancy. The study also demonstrates that infants have a bias to orient to human eyes, even when presented in isolation.

    Phonological awareness (PA), the core contributor in phoneme processing abilities, has a link to later reading skills in children. However, the associations between PA and neural auditory discrimination are not clear. We used event-related potential (ERP) methodology and neuropsychological testing to monitor the neurocognitive basis of phonological awareness in typically developing children. We measured 5-6-year-old children's (N = 70) phoneme processing, word completion and perceptual reasoning skills and compared their test results to their brain responses to phonemic changes, separately for each test. We found that children performing better in Phoneme processing test showed larger mismatch negativity (MMN) responses than children scoring lower in the same test. In contrast, no correspondence between test scores and brain responses was found for Auditory closure. Thus, the results suggest that automatic auditory change detection is linked to phoneme awareness in preschool children.

    We studied visual attention to emotional faces in 10-month-old infant siblings of children with ASD (ASD-sibs; N = 70) and a siblings of typically developing children (N = 29) using static stimuli. Contrary to our predictions, we found no evidence for atypical gaze behavior in ASD-sibs when boys and girls were analyzed together. However, a sex difference was found in ASD-sibs' visual attention to the mouth. Male ASD-sibs looked more at the mouth across emotions compared to male controls and female ASD-sibs. In contrast, female ASD-sibs looked less at the mouth compared to female controls. These findings suggest that some aspects of early emerging atypical social attention in ASD-sibs may be sex specific.

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is commonly conceived as the extreme end of a continuum. Research suggests that autistic individuals outperform typically developing controls in visual search. Thus, enhanced visual search may represent an adaptive trait associated with ASD. Here, using a large general population sample (N = 608, aged 9–14 years), we tested if higher levels of autistic traits are associated with enhanced visual search. Visual search was evaluated using both manual responses and eye movements, and autistic traits were measured using the Social Responsiveness Scale. Contrary to our hypothesis, no significant relation between autistic traits and visual search were observed. The theoretical implications of these results are discussed.

    This article suggests that we look for alternative ways to reflect upon the current Assyrian “identity crisis” and argues that it should be understood as the consequence of an uncompleted social process, namely the failure of Assyrian nationalism to evolve into a mass national movement. It identifies the Assyrian genocide Seyfo during World War I and the restructuring of the Middle East as the foremost reasons for why the Assyrians today suffer from division.

    Abstract [en]

    To fulfill the criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), symptoms must be present across domains and contexts. We assessed preschool staff’s ratings of social communication and interaction (SCI) and restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) in 3-year-old siblings of children with ASD, either diagnosed (n = 12) or not diagnosed (n = 36) with ASD, and typically developing siblings with no family history of ASD (n = 16). Ratings of SCI were more accurate than RRBs in differentiating the ASD group from the two other groups, and only the SCI ratings correlated with SCI symptoms rated by clinical experts. We conclude that while preschool staff ratings of SCI behaviors are adequate, ratings of RRBs should be treated with more caution.

    Background

    In typical infant development, parents and their children jointly contribute to establishing frequent episodes of joint attention that boost language acquisition and shape social cognition. Here we used novel live eye-tracking technology to evaluate the degree to which autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is related to reduced responding to others’ joint attention bids in infancy (RJA) and to a reduced tendency to initiate joint attention episodes (IJA). Because young infants use their gaze for both RJA and IJA, this approach allowed us to quantify these elusive processes early in life.

    Methods

    The final sample consisted of 112 infants (54 boys and 58 girls), of whom 81 were at familial risk for ASD and 31 were typically developing low-risk infants. At follow-up (36 months of age), 22 children in the high-risk group were diagnosed with ASD.

    Results

    At 10 months of age, rates of IJA were lower in infants later diagnosed with ASD than in the comparison groups (effect sizes d = 0.78–0.95) and followed an atypical developmental trajectory from 10 to 18 months (p < .002). RJA distinguished infants based on familial ASD risk, albeit not ASD diagnosis. The differences in IJA could not be explained by overall looking time, social preference, eye movement latencies, or number of fixations.

    Conclusions

    This live eye-tracking study suggests that during an important period for the development of social cognition (10–18 months of age), infants later diagnosed with ASD show marked atypicalities in IJA but not in RJA. The results indicate that IJA is an important target for future prodromal intervention trials.

    The university is the second oldest institution with a continuous history in the Western world, the first being the Roman Catholic Church. That much is generally known. Less generally known - except to those who fuss with it - is that the problem of defining ’university’ has long preoccupied politicians, planners, reformers, academics, theologians, philosophers, historians, and litterateurs. They have often found the task impossible. So much has this been the case, especially since the eighteenth century, that universities are now subsumed under a broader if less romantic category called ’higher education’. It is less romantic because ’higher education’ implies levels of bureaucratic and technocratic organisation and coordination that the word ’university’ never does. So this book is also about the tension between universities and ’higher education’, between a special sort of cultural inheritance with idealistic, ’spiritual’, and ’high-minded’ aspirations derived from important philosophical and theological traditions, and a different but no less important set of beliefs which have constantly pushed universities towards a broader and more open set of social or service obligations. Universities have both resisted and accepted, often simultaneously, the broader role. In the process they have redefined their mission and purpose or returned to older conceptions of their ’essence’. The result is a history filled with irony and ambiguity, of a struggle between simplicity and complexity, of outrage and accommodation, of ideals lost and regained; and to understand that history, we are required to narrate how universities have dealt with specific kinds or categories of education - liberal education, the professions, science, technology, research, vocationalism.

    This chapter provides an overview of reactions to Harry Frankfurt’s influential theory of bullshitting, addressing the four main features he ascribes to it, and considers some alternatives to Frankfurt’s account. Among others, issues raised by Thomas Carson and G. A. Cohen are examined in the discussion. A proposal to characterize bullshitting in terms of Gricean maxims is discussed, and it is argued that these views fail to capture the full range of cases. Here, works by Stokke and Don Fallis are cited. An alternative view that analyzes bullshitting in terms of the speaker’s attitudes toward the communal project of inquiry is canvassed, and the chapter ends by discussing the relation between bullshitting and lying.

    Introduction. Most philosophers agree that lies are assertions.1 In particular, most agree that you lie only if you assert something you believe to be false.2 You can avoid lying if you can avoid asserting disbelieved information. A well-known strategy of cunning disingenuousness is to mislead by asserting something one believes to be true and thereby convey something one believes to be false.

    Thinking about the nature of lying, and in particular the important relation between lying and other ways of deceiving with language, therefore involves thinking about what can be asserted by particular utterances.3 In ‘Lucifer’s Logic Lesson: How to Lie with Arguments’, Roy Sorensen tries to expand the canvas by drawing attention to a species of information that is conveyed by a variety of utterances, but which has received relatively little attention in the philosophy of language. This is the category of conventional implicature. Sorensen notes that conventional implicatures are typically thought to be assertions, as opposed to conversational implicatures, one of the chief characteristics of which is that they are not asserted. While conversational implicatures provide the default strategy for misleading while avoiding lying, Sorensen suggests that conventional implicatures will be lies in the right circumstances.

    Sorensen is interested in a particular type of construction, namely, the construction P therefore Q. He argues that therefore contributes a conventional implicature to such utterances, and that if what is conventionally implicated is believed to be false by the speaker, she is lying.

    Five interrelated claims can be distilled from Sorensen’s (2017) discussion:

    (s1) You lie only if you make an assertion (p. 106).

    (s2) Conventional implicatures are assertions (p. 110).

    (s3) You can lie with conventional implicatures (p. 107).

    (s4) P therefore Q conventionally implicates that P implies Q (p. 106).4

    (s5) You can lie with P therefore Q (even if you believe P and believe Q) (p. 105).

    My plan is as follows. In §ii, I will comment on (s1) and (s2). §§iii–v will be concerned with (s4) and (s5). Finally, §vi will turn to (s3). We will see that there is reason to agree with (s1)–(s3) while disagreeing with (s4)–(s5). In other words, there is reason to agree that conventional implicatures are asserted, and therefore you can lie with conventional implicatures. But I think the case Sorensen focuses on, that of therefore, is ill-chosen. We will see that the evidence suggests that therefore is a presupposition trigger, rather than a conventional implicature trigger. This means that the implication relation conveyed by P therefore Q is presupposed, and not asserted, by utterances of such constructions. Hence, since I agree with (s1), I will reject (s5). I think the relevant examples are not outright lies, although they may be misleading.

    This chapter is concerned with the question, what are the conditions under which insincerity blocks testimonial knowledge and what are the conditions under which testimonial knowledge may be acquired in the face of insincere testimony? The chapter argues that when insincerity blocks testimonial knowledge, the insincerity involved is a kind of unreliability. In particular, insincere testimony—in particular, lying—is seen to involve fabrication, that is, making something up. It is argued that acquiring testimonial knowledge requires that the testimony be given on a reliable basis. Yet fabrication is not a reliable basis for testimony, and hence this explains why lying testimony typically does not yield testimonial knowledge. By contrast, the chapter shows that, in cases where listeners acquire testimonial knowledge from insincere testifiers, the testimony is given on a reliable basis.

    This paper outlines an account of the ethics of lying, which accommodates two main ideas about lying. The first of these, Anti‐Deceptionalism, is the view that lying does not necessarily involve intentions to deceive. The second, Anti‐Absolutism, is the view that lying is not always morally wrong. It is argued that lying is not wrong in itself, but rather the wrong in lying is explained by different factors in different cases. In some cases such factors may include deceptive intentions on the part of the liar. In other cases, where such intentions are not found, the wrong in lying may be explained by other factors. Moreover, it is argued that the interaction between considerations against lying and considerations against telling the truth are sensitive to the practical interests of those lied to. When the topic of the lie in question matters little to the victim's rational decision making, the threshold for when considerations against telling the truth can outweigh considerations against lying are lowered. This account is seen to explain why lying to avoid little harm is sometimes permissible, and sometimes not.

    This chapter considers various ways of theorizing about lying from the point of view of Gricean Quality maxims. It first discusses attempts to characterize lying as a violation of the First Maxim of Quality and then turns to views of lying in terms of the supermaxim of Quality. The chapter suggests that both these types of view on lying give the wrong results on non-deceptive lies, the difference between lies and ironic statements, and the difference between lying and misleading. The chapter finishes by considering the view that lies are insincere assertion in relation to the Gricean view that Quality maxims have a special status in relation to the other maxims and the Cooperative Principle.
