    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on the cooperation of the archive and the school. The theoretical framework is socio-cultural perspective. The main method used is qualitative interviews with employees at the archives. I have studied three different archives which, in cooperation with the school, conduct archival education. In addition to the interviews I have participated in two observations. The research found that there was a great interest in the school to participate in the archive's educational work. Factors such as stress for the teachers and too few archive educational resources adversely affect the archive education mission. The views look different, but the goal is to present archives to the students and provide a positive experience. The fact that archives are to be regarded as an obvious place of visit, was the democratic right of citizens, and that information is being discussed what the archives want to convey to archive education. The archival material used by the archives has a clear link with the curricula and places great emphasis on teaching source criticism.

    Abstract [en]

The defence unit´s archive stretches over a time limit between the middle of 1971 to the end of 1987. The records the archive mainly contains are concerning the civil defence, inspection and construction of shelters, war- and crisis planning. The majority of the records are registered record, as often is the case with an authority’s archives. The main problems that occurred concerned what should or shouldn´t be public, the principle of provenance and what to prioritize; finish the project before deadline or make sure the records are prepared for a storage that ideally should last for several lifetimes.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is based on the work of arranging and making an inventory for an archive consisting of records from the Board of Education (Utbildningsnämnden) within the administration of the County Council in Uppsala, Sweden. This archive is kept at the County Councils Archives in Uppsala where I have done the work. I have documented the process and discussed the complex of problems relating to it. In this particular case the issue of limitation of the office of origin and the respect of the fonds, or the principle of provenance, have been of interest. This is due to the fact that the records had been rearranged and mixed with records with other origin related to the Board of Education. Records from the early existence of the board have previously been arranged and an inventory had been made. This earlier work covered the period of 1971-1978, when the board of education had a secretariat.

The aim of the work was to arrange the records of the board during the period of 1979-1997. After this period the board ended being an independent body. With support from theories of respect of fonds my conclusion is that the Board of Education is a coherent office of origin for the fonds during its entire period of existence dur - ing the years 1971-1997. I decided to make the first inventory a part of the new one in order to keep a logical continuity of the records and the inventory. Creating a subordinate archive with its own inventory would make the whole seem badly arranged and complicate the finding of records. Based on the respect of fonds I used the previous inventory to a large extent. The knowledge and understanding I gained thanks to the fact that I was able see the complete fonds made me do some changes. The archive consist of files based on journals to a large ex - tent, which makes a large part of the records easy to find.

The work in combination with the essay constitutes my one year master’s thesis in archival science.

    Abstract [sv]

This paper is an account of the work around the arrangement and registration of the archive of the Swedish Art-ists’ Association’s archive. The Swedish Artists’ Association is an association of artists that both makes exhibi-tions for their members’ works and handles the Artists’ House, called Konstnärshuset in Swedish. During the work with the archive the author faced a number of challenges and problems. These took the form of both how to structure the material of the archive into an easily accessible structure, and how to handle the occasions when accessibility and the original order of the archive would not co-exists. In the few cases where this happened the author made the choice of accessibility over the original order. Discussions of literature and the possibility of removal of extra material from the archive are discussed in the first part of the paper while the second half con-sist of a discussion of the different parts of the archive, what material was put there and why. In the end the au-thor makes some reflections upon his work and discusses what could have been done better. The work with the archive started in early April and went on to the middle of June, although the writing of the paper continued until the end of August.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis serves as a guide to the holdings of Leufsta Bruksarkiv, a small archival institution situated at a former ironworks in Lövstabruk on the east coast of Sweden. The holdings stem from a period of advanced iron manufacturing in Sweden, from the mid-17th century to the first decades of the 20th century. The holdings consists foremost of bookkeeping, but we also find documents dealing with judicial matters, maps and blueprints.

During the 17th century Lövsta bruk (also Leufsta bruk) became the largest manufacturer of iron in Sweden. Louis de Geer, a Dutch businessman who is sometimes referred to as the father of Swedish industry, was involved in the ironworks already in 1626 and took over the ownership of the facility 1643. He developed a new order in Swedish iron manufacturing by bringing workforces to Lövsta from his native region of Wallonia, today a part of Belgium. Leufsta Bruksarkiv holds records from several ironworks in the region that all have a relation to Lövsta bruk or Gimo bruk – another big facility related to the de Geer family. The relationship between these ironworks is described in the guide.

The bookkeeping shows a consistency and a richness of detail, providing an insight into the life and labour at the ironworks. The books are also a source for genealogical research and research on estates and villages in the region. Research into the judicial records, amongst which regulations of properties and ownership can be found, may help those who seek to trace the transformation of the area or the history of a specific estate. The historical maps provide a further complement in such matters.

The guide will provide an aid for visitors and help recognize what information can be drawn out of the records. It also aims to situate the holdings in its historical context by drawing the larger picture of the de Geerian dynasty and the process of iron manufacturing, as well as discussing the vocabulary found in the documents.

    Abstract [en]

For centuries it was a crime to be without work or an income in Sweden. Those breaching this law were called vagrants and could be sentenced to forced labor. They stood outside of society in many ways as they were being criminalized. Society's view of them becomes clear by the laws enacted against vagrancy. The investigations that were made in creating the laws do not only say something about society's view of vagrancy, but something about the society itself.

In Sweden we have a unique collection of investigations and referrals that are public records through Freedom of the Press. Committees and departmental records are public and contain a lot of information about the society in which they were created. The purpose of this Handbook is to show the access points which are available when you want to take advantage of the wealth of this material. Most of this material is stored at the National Archives in Stockholm and this is a guide to those documents. Between 1825 and 1965 seven committees were appointed and the guide will follow them from initiation to law. The Handbook is intended as a guide to documents legislation in general and to documents about legislation regarding vagrants in particular. Finally, it will show how to find documents on how the laws worked in practice, through the renovated court records in the archives of Svea Court of Appeal.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to reveal the age-related norms which control the process of making public archives accessible. It focuses on physical access and visitors at the physical archival institutions. More specifically, it examines which groups are not included in the archival institutions’ target groups and why this is the case, the archival employees’ views on visitors’ needs and the archival institutions’ action space regarding the process of making archives accessible.

The theoretical framework for this thesis is a combination of a norm critical and an intersectional perspective. The main method used is qualitative interviews with employees at archival institutions. Two different archival institutions have been examined, which are both departments of public authorities.

The main result of the thesis is that there exist normative systems within the archival institutions which favour elderly people and people within the academic world. Age also matters less for people within the academic world. Accordingly, people outside of these groups can be regarded as non-target groups. Factors which can contribute to exclusion are also non-western origin and to be occupied at daytime. The explanations to why some groups are excluded are lack of resources and knowledge, a reactive approach, and the institutions’ opening hours. Regarding visitors’ needs, many visitors need help searching for material and formulating their needs, which they can also expect to be helped with. Needs which the archival employees can not satisfy are extensive reading of handwriting or carrying out research for the visitor. In general, it seems that people within the archival institutions’ target groups are more likely to get the exact help they need. The archival employees have a relatively great action space when it comes to making archives accessible, as the policy documents don’t mention this activity in detail.

    Abstract [en]

Archives can tell us many things about the past. The purpose of this guide is to facilitate the work of those who want to know more about the documents associated with death sentences. The guide gives a brief introduction to the history of the death penalty in Swedish legal history, to the legal process and to the judicial authorities. It also adresses the relationship between the various bodies and the relationship between law and jurisprudence. The guide presents primarily the archives of Nedre justitierevisionen and of Svea hovrätt. The guide presents what kind of information can be found and provides guidance as to how these documents are sought. Through a case study, we learn that records can give answers to many questions regarding a person sentenced to death.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish geographer Gerd Enequist (1903-1989) left behind great amounts of private and work material when she passed away. This was donated to the University Library of Uppsala, Carolina Rediviva, in three different accessions. This resulted in three different record. The subject of this report is the progress of assembling these record into one complete record.

The registering led to many important decisions such as the role of provenance and the relation of private and public documents. Above all the special nature of personal archives have been a topic of discussion. Personal archives separate themselves from public records and therefore demand a different strategy of listing. The width of kinds of material and the mixture of private and public records are important qualities that differ them from public records.

The report is initiated with an introduction of Enequist, followed by a description of the three accessions. In the second part of the report the work with recording the archive is accounted for including a description of the headings of the record. Thereafter the problems encountered during the work are described and discussed. The report is completed with a short proposal of the research values of the archive.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine what kind of archival issues have been discussed in the legislation process that lead to the Swedish national Data Protection Act and the associated regulation with additional terms, if achange in focus occurred during this process and examine how these results show about how legislative actorsview personal privacy. To answer that aim a critical discourse analysis of the legislative documents from theGeneral Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) leading up to the complete legislative acts was used in combinationwith Pekka Henttonens theory about how the nature of privacy issues has changed in a more digitalized environment.

A result of the analysis is that the themes of the archival issues that is being discussed in the legislative processis mostly related to general rules, sensitive information, safe guards, further processing, archival materialthat has been submitted to an archive authority, and certain exceptions from some of the rights of the data subject. These themes are being discussed both in relation to those kinds of archives that is governed by archivallegislation and those kinds of archives that are not governed by archival legislation. Another result of the study isthat even though several attempts to affect the legislative process is made by respondents very few changes isactually made after the inquiry report is completed. The last result of the study is that the legislative actors havenot fully changed their view on privacy, even though some aspects of it has changed. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archival Science.

This memo discusses and problematizes the work of organizing and cataloging the archive of the Environmental Advisory Council. The archive mainly consists of records concerning meetings which the Environmental Advisory Council has participated in, but also records concerning different tasks of the council and a few records concerning the coun-cil itself. The overriding problem, which is discussed in the final part of this memo, is the lacking knowledge about the creator of the archive and the creation of the archive itself and how this effects the work of ordering and catalog-ing. An attempt is made to evaluate the archive as a source of information to the Environmental Advisory Coun-cil and its work. This is a one year master’s thesis in Archival Science

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this one-year master thesis was to examine the principles of arrangement used by the Swedish Royal Office archive from about 1540-1878, and how the principles of arrangement have corresponded with the information needs of that rules the Swedish Royal Office archive. The following theoretical premises were important: Berndt Fredriksson's empirical archival science, JBLD Strömberg's concepts of archive systems and Randolph C. Head's concepts of mirroring.

Two questions have been examined. What connections is there between the major reorganizations of the Swedish Royal Office archive, the process for governance of Sweden / the Royal Office, access to / control over archival documents, information needs, the political situation, and changes in how the archive was arranged and inventoried. What sources of inspiration have those responsible for the reorganizations had regarding the reorganizations? My source material consisted primarily of archival inventories. In this inquiry I have used a case study in which document and literature studies were conducted.

During this study I have discovered that several principles of arrangement was in use simultaneously during the examined time period. This suggests either that older ideas regarding inventory labor were present at the same time and influenced the inventory labor or that the "archivist" during this time period had great freedom to choose between different principles of arrangement. Arrangement by geographic location were used during the entire time period. The archival inventories arranged by this principle has evolved from larger descriptions over geographic places to titles in Latin over countries. It also seems likely that the countries of this archival inventories represented Sweden's foreign relations. Mirroring has been detected between the reasons for the reorganizations, major political conflicts internally and externally, changes in the governance process, the user groups of the archive, the information needs and archival inventories. Mirroring has also occurred between the principles of arrangement and information access and needs. There are several available sources of inspiration to the reorganizations and hence the principles of arrangement.

Available methods of cataloging in Sweden is primarily designed to deal with documents producedby an organisation, and can therefore be difficult to adapt to records not produced by institutions ororganisations. A conflict of sorts between provenance and pertinence in the field of cataloging is localised anddiscussed. Also discussed are issues of adapting records and catalogs for use by non-archivists, and some of theother issues that face archivists when working outside of archival institutions

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis in Archival Science was to explore the concept of electronic archives and the challenges that might be encountered when attempting to move archives into a new digital age, as well as having a closer look at the term e-archive itself. Another aim was to explore how the OAIS reference model works in practice. To explore these questions I decided to do a case study on E-Arkiv Stockholm, a functioning e-archive. I decided to do a study on several documents that were created throughout the project, these included documents related to the planning of the archive, as well as the final report. My reason for this method was that these docu-ments came straight from reality and would give a clear and unbiased view of the project and it’s many aspects.Examination of the documents showed that the OAIS reference model and its concepts had been the foun-dation of much of the planning. Thoughts and planning on the matter of digital preservation are also based in the model, with a focus on migration and conversion of digital material as a means to ensure it’s lasting existence, as well as keeping a close eye on the technical development of both hardware and software. I also reached the con-clusion that the concept and term e-archive is not so much about re-inventing archival policies and theory as it is about keeping true to already existing practices in a new digital environment. With a special focus on preserva-tion, as digital preservation might, both now and in the future, prove to be much more of a challenge then the preservation of more traditional media. This is a one-year masters thesis in archival science.

    Abstract [en]

The archives of religious communities is a sparingly treated subject and christian community archives constitute the majority of the archives studied. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the relevance of James M. O'Toole's four characteristics of religious archives put forward in his article What’s different about religious archives? Another implicit purpose is to expand the knowledge of religious community archives and include archives from other world religions. The thesis's theoretical starting-point is O'Toole's characteristics which are also used as a basis for the questions that the thesis set out to answer. The main question is to what extent O'Toole's characteristics are relevant for studying archives linked to modern religious communities operating in Sweden. The method used is interviews. A total of seven people were interviewed who had knowledge of seven religious community archives. The archives were linked to the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden, the Catholic Bishopric, the Jewish Community in Stockholm, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Triratna Buddhist Community and the Baptist Union of Sweden. With the exception of interviews, the source material consisted of literature (books and articles), web pages, archive registers and email correspondence. The result is that O'Toole's characteristics are not particularly relevant for studying archives linked to modern religious communities operating in Sweden. Religion does not seem so important for religious archives as O'Toole claims. On a scale of 0–5, the relevance of O'Toole's characteristics is 1–2. For this reason, the characteristics need to be modified. There are good opportunities for future researchers to develop the subject and supplement this study. Abstract [en]

The purpose of this master’s thesis was to investigate the new archive center Stadsarkivet Liljeholmskajen in Stockholm. The aim for this case study was to research the center's archival outreach based on aspects such as physical space, architecture, design and location. The purpose of the case study was to investigate how concepts such as accessibility, inclusion, visibility and participation appear in the physical space and are promoted through architecture, design and location. Furthermore, it was examined whether the goals and visions for the project had been realized and how well they were in line with reality. The central concepts of inclusion, accessibility, visibility, participation and realization have been thematised and used to answer the questions. The case study material has been based on three different methods that constituted triangulation in the form of document studies of project plans and work material, two interviews with key persons in the project and observations that were carried out on several occasions in the archive center. Several theoretical starting points have framed the study from different perspectives and concepts used for analysis and interpretation. The theoretical perspectives are based on disciplines such as archival science, museum science and architectural science The results have highlighted that accessibility and inclusion which are an approach that the archive center has embraced as a business idea and which has been manifested architecturally and in the physical space. Another result has shown that the users' perspective has been in focus through out the project, although not everything has been realized, there are aspects that have been designed based on the users needs and wishes. This study has investigated a new archive center that is modern and forward-looking for its time, both as an idea and building for an archive. Furthermore, this case study can be of importance for other archives that seek inspiration and insight into what conditions are needed to achieve an innovative and successful business with the help of architectural and spatial aspects.

Dans som arkivmaterial: En semiotisk studie av danshandlingar2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The subject of this thesis is dance as archive material. Illustrations, dance notation, reviews, photographs, moving imagery and motion capture are studied as different types of records which preserve dance. The purpose is to find out what has happened between dance and dance record. What kind of representation of dance are the records? The study also connects to a user perspective and poses another question: what do scholars who study movement which has happened get out of these types of records? In what way can dance scholars use these record types?

The theoretical stance is semiotics and I use Ferdinand de Saussures concepts ‘signifiant’ and ‘signifié’ to orientate myself in the difference between dance which has happened and the records, which tell us something about this dance. Charles Sanders Peirce concepts ‘symbolic,’ ‘iconic’ and ‘indexical’ are used to describe the relationship between dance and record.

The method is qualitative interviews. I have interviewed four dance scholars and the recorded interviews are the source material. The scholars have knowledge of what types of representatives of dance the records are, since they study dance which has happened through records. The interviews also answer the question related to the scholar’s perspective: what do dance scholars get out of the records when they study dance which has happened?

Scholars who study dance which has happened often prefer moving imagery as a source. They do so because the moving image has an iconic relationship to the dance (a relationship built on likeness) and because it, like dance, is moving. There is no record which could give an absolute transferral of a movement which has happened, all types of records have their prerequisites. Nor is there a record type which is ‘better’ than another, which record is prefered depends on the scholar’s purpose of their study.

The different record types complement each other and many scholars prefer to use several different types. Hence, this study recommends dance archives to aim for plurality of record types in their collections.

    Abstract [en]

The subject of this master's thesis is how digitisation changes the understanding of textual archival matter. Drawing on document theory and media theory, the concept of digitisation is analysed as remediation, the repro - duction of one medium in another. A key theoretical assumption is that digitisation is not a neutral process, and conceptualising digitisation as remediation is a way of analysing the changed charasteristics of archival matter when represented in another medium. A tentative model for analysing remediated archival matter is presented, identifying three aspects or dimensions as crucial in understanding how remediation affects the interpretation of archival matter: the document dimension, the media dimension and the institutional dimension.

The source material for this thesis are four instances of digitised archival material, each conceptualised and analysed as a case study. The four case studies are: a digitised archival volume from the archives of Swedish art museum Moderna Museet; the digitised typewritten manuscript of the poem ”De sju dödssynderna” (”The seven deadly sins”) by Swedish author and poet Karin Boye, available on the cultural heritage portal Alvin; a digitised handwritten notebook forming part of the manuscript for the novel To the Lighthouse by English author Virginia Woolf, available on the website Woolf Online; the digitised verdict from Swedish court of justice Kammarrätten (Administrative Court of Appeal) regarding the age rating for the film The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part One.

It is argued that the digitised archival material in each case study has the character of a digital facsimile, whose charasteristics are dependent upon choices made in its production as well as mode of presentation. It is further argued that the characteristics of each digital facsimile shape and mediate the understanding of the archi - val matter, and that some kinds of information, e. g. textual information, are more easily represented than others, e. g. material information.

In the light of these results, the changing role of the archive and the possibilities of different kinds of rese - arch are discussed. The original value of this master's thesis lies in its further development of the concept of re - mediation as a concept in archival science as well as deepening the understanding of the interpretative fra - meworks surrounding digitised archival matter.

    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this one year master thesis in archival science was to arrange and catalogue two similar school archives at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, using two different types of methods; the traditional Swedish common archive schedule and the modern process oriented method. The result was then discussed based on the ability of the two types of archive lists to enable information retrieval and to reflect the activities of the school.

This work will show that there is a signicant difference in how these two methods for catalogueing archival records manage to reflect the activities of each school. The process-oriented method focuses on the activities when constructing the archive list, while the Swedish common archive schedule base the archive list on stipulated headings. As for each method's ability to enable information retrieval, the study shows that both the process oriented method and the traditional method face the question of how much metadata is to much, when presenting a record from an information retrieval point of view. This thesis concludes that although process-oriented method more clearly reflects the activities of the organisation behind the records, there is still no standardised way of presenting the information in an easily accessible way. Also, there is much to do before archives will be considered a part of the daily document management, and not closed , dust filled institutions.

    Abstract [en]

This paper is an account of the inventory I've made of documents in the archive at Museum Gustavianum, Collections storage Husbyborg, relating to the excavations in Asine, Greece, in the 1920s. The aim of this inventory has been to establish which of the documents in the Husbyborg archives that belong to the department of Classical Studies at Uppsala University. Documents belonging to other archives have been found alongside the one mentioned above and those are the Original documentation (loan from Carolina) and the personal archive of Professor Axel W. Persson. The documents have been arranged according to the General Archive Scheme (Allmänna arkivschemat) seeing that the department of Classical Studies already had a series named Documents relating to the departments archeological collections, and the inventory I've made will be incorporated with that. The subject of this one year master's thesis in archival science has been, other than the inventory itself, to describe and examine the difficulties I've encountered during this inventory, which are separation of archives, principle of provenance and photographs.

    Abstract [en]

This essay has its background in the work I’ve been conducting organizing and cataloging two personal archives concerning the life and work of two vicars, Johan Axel Björkman and P.A. Björkman. The time span of the papers stretches from 1823 to 1982.

The main problems I’ve been confronted with during this work have to do with respecting provenance and original order. I discuss these principles in relation to the experiences I’ve had with the vicar archives as well as to the special character of personal archives in general. I also discuss the use of Martin Grass’ scheme for personal archives.

The essay constitutes my one year master’s thesis in archival science.

    Abstract [en]

Introduction: The aim of the present thesis is to determine the line of argument presented by the clergy of the Swedish State Church in the parliamentary debates regarding the forms of census registrations during the years 1723-1812. This discussion resulted in a new form of census registration in 1812, according to which the parish registration was accorded a greater importance than before. As a result of vast tax evasion, demands were put forth by the authorities that the clergy should be compelled to hand over the parish catechetical registries. The clergy was here faced with a conflict of loyalty between the state and their parishes. To structurally examine the line of argument of the clergy may not only clarify how this conflict was met by the clergy, but also serve as an illustration of the relationship between church and state in 18th century Sweden. The effects of the form of census registration of 1812 on the parish catechetical registries are also touched briefly upon.

Method: To fullfill this aim, the parliamentary records of the clergy have been examined and analysed in accordance with the methods of argumentation analysis presented in Vedung (1971). Secondary sources regarding the historical circumstances surrounding the parliamentary debates of 1723-1812 have been utilized as well.

Analysis: In the analysis the individual arguments presented by the clergy have been distinguished according to three levels: description, evaluation and recommended course of action. These levels are furthermore presented schematically, so as to comprehensively illustrate the line of argumentation.

Results: The results of the endeavour show that the representatives of the church and state did not agree as to the legitimate extent of the state’s influence in church matters. The clergy defended the Lutheran idea of separation between church and state power, despite the fact that contemporary canon law asserted an almost unbreakable bond between church and state authority. Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to gain knowledge of how automated decision-making in Swedish public authorities affects the ability to comply with the Swedish principle of public access to official records. This is done through a Posthumanist analysis of seven qualitative interviews. With the help of the actor-network theory concept of the nonhuman actor the underlying computer programs of automated decision-making is understood as an actor who, in interaction with human actors, affects the public sector´s ability to provide the public with valuable information about how they run their organizations. The interviews were conducted with employees at two Swedish public organizations: The Swedish Board of Student Finance and Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions. The respondents were asked what kind of insight in the underlying computer programs for automated decision-making that they themselves and the public thought was needed. The interviews were recorded and transcribed, and provided the material for the analysis.

The study shows that the employees share the opinion that insight in the automated decision-making systems are not necessary for the public. As a consequence of this, the system developers are left with exclusive knowledge of how the public sector is making decisions and the decision-making becomes invisible for a majority of the public. This is not in line with the aim of the principle of public access to official records.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish goverment has recognised digitalisation as a way to increse access to the cultural heritage, for memory institutions increased access raises questions concerning availability and accessibility.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how two memory institutions, in this case one library and one archive, worked with respective projects concerning digitalisation of the cultural heritage. This thesis did not intend to compare how the two institutions worked with digitalisation, but to give exampels of two different ways of approaching digitalisation.

This qualitative study was influenced by a grounded theory approach, and the method of collecting information was to give one interview with key figures at each respective institution.

Initiating a project that deals with digitisation can originate from an idea or a desire to evolve. This depends on what experience the institution has with working with digitisation, the experience also influence the result of the project. The experience is also dependent on what the institution sees as its main purpose.

    Abstract [en]

Personal archives are a largely neglected subject in archival theory. Among the consequences of this is the absenceof any general established or formalized practices when it comes to arrangement and description. Thisstudy opposes the notion that an archival institution without formal systems of arrangement and description doesnot order and describe archives in accordance with a general conceptual framework of a correct order. Supportingitself on the anthropological theory of Mary Douglas on dirt and cleanliness, it studies the implicit notions oforder that can be found in the archival descriptions of the personal archives kept by the Swedish national archives.Several patterns where revealed by the study: among them the primacy of quantity stood out. The vaguesystem of categories based on Martin Grass description model appears only to be employed loyally where quantitiesof the particular categories are such that they constitute complete volumes, which seem to be the cardinaljustifier of categorical division within the archive. The model itself is rarely applied with orthodoxy, and itsroughness often means that the categories engage in “border clashes” over which documents belong in whichcategory. Though these are often caused and generally determined by quantities, they also reveal an internalhierarchy of relations between specific types of records and categories. Furthermore, certain categories appearsmore stable than others, and when Grass system collapses, it reveals how certain of them – based on a principleof pertinence or theme – habitually fall out of use whereas categories defined by document types appear to remainfar more stable even in smaller archives and archives with low degree of differentiation.

Att utkräva ansvar: Inskränkningar i Offentlighets- och sekretesslagstiftningen utifrån accountability-begreppet och ett tekniskt perspektiv2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The whole purpose of this essay is to see how the opportunities to demand accountability been affected by changes in the OSL. This is based on three questions. The first question is: How changes affect the OSL opportunities for accountability? The second question: to what extent, technical progress been a driving force for changes in the OSL and in what way? The third and final question is: What changes have sparked debate?

The essay initiate with a report that konstitutionsutskottet compiled, the report was called Översyn av ändringar i offentlighets- och sekretesslagstiftningen 1995-2012. In this report konstitutionsutskottet compiles the changes implemented since the OSL entered into legal force in 2009. 53 of these changes resulted in actual changes in the law, such as new paragraphs or additions to the regulations. I examined the respective committee report for these 53 amendments thereto, and have the committee reports constituted the main source material for the essay. The methodology used for the survey of the committee reports is the document analysis.

The results of the survey are that the strengthened secrecy to protect data relating to individuals becomes the expense of opportunities for accountability. In a fairly large extent, technological developments have meant that the need to revise and extend the protection for individuals and thereby also limit the opportunity for accountability. Technological developments have also been pushing for changes to the OSL .

Few of these amendments leads to debate in terms of OSL, therefore, does not question the notches of OSL in especially large extent when the real restriction is actually happening. Konstitutionsutskottets report, in the beginning of the essay, however, shows a clear concern with regard to the entirety of the amendments.

    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on the Nordic model of Extended Collective Licenses (ECL) and how this model can be used in the process of digitalising and publishing archival material such as photos, letters, maps or films. The question that this study aims to deal with is what advantages, and disadvantages, there are for archives and copyright holders when an ECL is being used. To help answering this question the ‘theory of the knowledge commons’ has been applied. The research question has been answered through a text analysis based on legal texts including Swedish law. To get a wider perspective, international literature such as official and law-binding documents from the Nordic countries and the European Union have also been consulted. Policies and contributions to the debate about making cultural heritage available online have also been included to give light to the complexity of the question.

In 2013 the Swedish copyright law was changed to facilitate for certain archives and libraries to sign an agreement with a so called Collective Administration Organization (CAO). There are no examples of ECLs being used by Swedish archives for classical archival materials even if the possibility to draw up this type of agreements has existed since 2005. One of the reasons might be the complexity of the law and that the archival institutions have problems of interpreting it. The institutions often avoid providing access to their materials online or choose material they know is in the public domain already. Finding copyright holders before publishing material online is time-consuming. One of the major advantages of functional ECLs is that they save time and resources – both for the archival institutions and the copyright holders. The ECLs provide an opportunity for the archival institutions to share their collections with the public and the copyrights holders get an organized way to communicate their terms and conditions.

Människor, miljöer och resurser: En studie av arkivariens roll som konsult.2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis is to examine how archivists work as consultants and how they perceive their professional role.  The research emanates from the notion of resources and how these relate to aspects like environment and roles. The resources that the consultant can use in their work are dependent on which environment they are located in. The resources and the environment in turn effect the archivist’s role and the exertion of their profession.

The study focuses on three Swedish archivists that are employed at the city archive of Stockholm and work as consultants to businesses of the city. The empirical study is based first on observations and then interviews.

Grounded theory is used as a method, initially in the purpose of finding a theory that originates from the viewpoint of the informants. The results from this analysis highlight the way the consultants use resources in their everyday work. Theories concerning roles and environment are used to show how the insufficiency or availability of resources effect the roles and work of the consultants, as described here above.

The result of the analysis show that the consultant’s role changes depending on which environment they are located in and whether or not they have access to certain resources. For example, time can both be an asset and a limitation. When the consultants work in an environment for a short period of time, their role are seen as an expert and they also advance in the hierarchy of the customer’s company. Simultaneously, the shortage of time can also pressure the consultant to make a less sufficient job. This in turn effects the role that the consultants have within their own establishment, in this case the city archive. Because of the shortage of time the consultants are, occasionally, instead seen as “sloppy” or not even considered to be real archivists.

The study also shows that the role as a consultant might enable the archivist to better market their knowledge and become a more significant part of companies’ and businesses’ everyday work, and furthermore that additional research is needed.

    Abstract [en]

This guide provides an overview of the 70 or so personal archives in the National Archives of Sweden that are part of the deposition of the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden. The archive guide is divided into three main parts:

The first chapter provides a description of, as well as a discussion regarding, the circumstances surrounding the personal archives. The history, organisation and archival institution of the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden are described. After that a discussion follows about problems associated to demarcation of personal archives and about the way the archival institution of the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden has chosen to solve these problems.

In the second chapter the structure and content of the archives are presented. Focus is set on the typical and particular of the personal archives of the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden,

In the final chapter the most relevant tools for finding the personal archives in the deposition are described. Some of the tools described may act as a complement to the others. The cahpter also provides some helt in finding other personal archives which do not belong in the depositions but may be regarded as having a strong connection to the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden.

Crowdsourcing som tillämpningsmetod hos svenska arkivinstitutioner: En kvalitativ undersökning ur ett maktperspektiv2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis I have chosen to study the use of crowdsourcing in Swedish archival institutions as well as the influence this methodic platform has on the work of modern archivists. This also raises the question whether the nature of the platform is in any way influenced by the attitude working professionals might have towards crowdsourcing as a legitimed working method. This investigation is based on case studies and interviews with archivists from select Swedish institutions and also the methodology of two now ongoing crowdsourcing projects.

The theoretical framework on which this composition is based comes from the work of Gregory Asmolov and his work on crowdsourcing platforms and their functionality as tools of governing. Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) is applied to analyze how the method of crowdsourcing is utilised by archival institutions and influenced by their daily routine in conjunction with Governmentality as the chosen way of studying how these platforms might control their users.

From the results of the performed case studies, two discourses emerged based on the view on quality concerning gathered information amongst the involved subjects. The first of these discourses places it´s trust and faith in users themselves where validity is of a lesser concern than the actual availability of information through the concept of ”wisdom of the crowds”. Discourse number two represents an alternate perspective where quality of information is of the outmost importance and requires the supervision of professionals upon the work of common users. Through the course of this study I have come to find that the use of crowdsourcing in Swedish archival institutions is mainly controlled by the archivist in charge´s attitude towards this specific working method and in a larger context also formed by the basic archival discourse, legal questions and financial matters of the last century.

Att bevara ett immateriellt kulturarv: En studie om hur dans bevaras i nutida arkiv2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this master's thesis is to examine how an intangible culture heritage is being preserved as records in contemporary archives, with dance as an example. The aim of the study is also to examine whether or not dance archives are in a transitional period in form of a paradigm shift, in terms in how dance records are perceived, preserved and made available.     The theoretical framework is to combine different theories in order to illuminate the subject from different angles. Phenomenology was used to illuminate the archives point of view in how dance can be preserved. Because technological and digital aspects are strongly connected to ideas about preservation of an intangible heritage; I have included theories regarding technology from a hermeneutic-phenomenological viewpoint. The technical and digital aspects of preserving dance are continually present throughout the study. Terry Cook’s archival theories regarding paradigm shifts are used as point of reference.     The methods are based on qualitative interviews and text analysis. I have mainly interviewed two archivists at two different archives whom both preserve dance records. The organizations are somewhat different, one is an opera house and the other is a university. In other words, they work within different frame works and the organizations have different purposes, conditions and strategies in how their records are being preserved.     The main results define that the central issue with the concept of preserving dance, is that there is no general consensus regarding what a dance record entails, furthermore the results based from the two case studies suggest that dance is being preserved mainly from the organizational core activity which is either the educational activities or the preservation of ballet and opera productions. The digital and technological possibilities how dance can be preserved have developed into advance methods in preservation, and at the same time traditional methods are still relevant in terms of preserving dance. Advanced methods, like 3D motion capture are not utilized because there is no current organizational requirement. In my conclusion, I reflect upon the idea of archive and dance that cannot be viewed as two opposite concepts. Dance archives embody dynamic processes in which the records can reflect a past time, but also be reconstructed, reinterpreted through the records substance and context.      This is a two years master's thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

När analogt blir digitalt: En studie i det nationella arbetet med digitaliseringen av analogt material2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this two year master’s thesis was to examine how Swedish archives practically assimilated the older analog material through digitization. The thesis was focused on studying the analog digitization as a common continuous national process. The aim and focus of the study was based on questions regarding, the material selection for the digitization, the users in the digitization process and the national cooperation in the digitization of the archives. Materials used in the study where government inquiries concerning digital preservation, Swedish National Heritage Board new digital guidelines and various applications for different analog digitization projects. By highlighting the different perspectives of the analog digitization the thesis obtained a more comprehensive understranding of the pratical issues.

The study was based on the theoretical framework of the media theorist Wolfgang Ernst and his notion of the links between technical progress, media changes and society’s adaptation of new technology. The study also used different media theoretical tools to analyze the issues on the analog digitization.

The result of the study showed that the analog digitization was part of a bigger technical process. The understanding of the digitization was in all perceived as a general term with several technical applications and concepts. In its entirety, the national cooperation was described as flexible and dynamic as it constantly adapted to the requirements and needs of the archives. The study also found that the national digitization consistently chose material that was considered to be in high demand. Scientists and their interest were closley intertwined in the selections of the analog matieral. The study showed that the analog digitization forced the archives to more consistently study and assess their analog material. In all, the national understanding regarding the analog digitization became a process that embraced new pratical ideas and techniques.

This study constitutes a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.
