    Abstract [en]

Aim. To describe and compare parishioners’ and minister’s 1) existential, spiritual and religious experiences, 2) expectations and conceptions regard-ing the Church and the ecclesial activities and 3) in theological terms reflect over these experiences and conceptions.

Method. A random, stratified, sample was constructed relating to parishion-ers and ministers in 24 parishes in the Stockholm bishopric, concerning men and women in the ages 25-65. The educational level of parishioners, was comparable to the average of Stockholm residents.

Results. Both parishioners and ministers described several existential and spiritual/religious experiences. It was not clear if there were any differences between the two groups concerning spiritual/religious experiences. Yet, their experiences were interpreted in different ways, inasmuch that ministers more often interpreted their experiences in confessional terms. Parishioners thought that religion could be expressed in many different ways. They considered the divine services to be too rigid and distant and wished that ministers should be on their own level and not set themselves above ordinary people. The ministers could be placed on an continuum from sender orientation to receiver orientation due to their expectations and con-ceptions regarding the Church and the ecclesial activities. Sender orientation means to primarily start with the Church statement of faith. Receiver orienta-tion means, to primarily start with the parishioners from their own world-view where religion can be expressed in many different ways. The ministers presented in total 48% sender orientation descriptions and 52% receiver ori-entation. Comparable figures for the parishioners were 5% sender orientation and 95% receiver orientation.

Conclusions. There seems to be a tension between, on one hand the view of a Church with an aim to meet the existential and spiritual needs of the pa-rishioners, and on the other hand a Church with a primary mission to com-municate the Christian articles of faith. If half of the ministers have a direc-tion in which parishioners have no interest and do not ask for, this might be a problem for the Church.

    Abstract [en]

The overall purpose of this thesis is to illuminate and critically evaluate Christian theology of atonement and redemption, in order to contribute to contemporary theology of atonement and redemption. The purpose is reached through an analysis of the work of two contemporary feminist theologians; Daphne Hampson and Rita Nakashima Brock. Hampson has formulated a sharp post-Christian position. Brock has distinguished herself through her critique of the Christian concept of atonement and through her contributions to reconciliation and redemption.

Both Daphne Hampson and Rita Nakashima Brock argue that Christian atonement-theology, primarily the so called objective model, is hurtful to children and victims of abuse and violence. They both argue that theological language is not innocent. At the same time, they illustrate broken relationships, sufferings, and problems they want to change, give theological interpretations of how that change is to take place and present methodologies on how to reach reconciliation between human beings and God as well as between human beings.

In two steps I undertake a critical analysis of content and presuppositions in Daphne Hampson’s and Rita Nakashima Brock’s theologies of atonement and redemption. In the first step, I describe Hampson’s and Brock’s critique of Christian atonement-theology. I analyze their theological critique and theological construction in a model "from-transition-to". My critical analysis focuses especially on internal consistency. In the second part, the analysis of presuppositions, I explain basic principles upon which they shape their theology. The analysis is made up by the analytical concepts; theoretical arguments of knowledge, understandings of faith, and the position of the subject. I also analyze other essential concepts out of which gender is one.

In the last chapter I present my own constructive contribution, structured by content and presuppositions. I argue that theology is both a critical and constructive discipline. In the content-response I discuss images of God, the tragic, the cross, and the hope. In the presuppositions-response I discuss the concept "space-in-between". In conclusion I propose that theology of atonement/redemption is shaped between post and Christian. I argue that space-in-between-perspectives are necessarily experimental and critical, a space on the border where marginalized voices are to be included.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this thesis literary creation and theological reflection are studied thematically in three unique, but theologically connected novels by François Mauriac (1885–1970) and Lars Ahlin (1915–1997). At the same time more general questions are raised concerning the interaction between fiction and theology. The characters’/people’s relationships with each other and their relations to a possible god, as well as the interaction between these two relational spheres make up the focal point of the analysis. This is further discussed in relation to fundamental theological patterns of thought through the problematisation of two separate visions of love.

The study makes use of a method in two stages, influenced by the philosopher Paul Ricœur. The method inspired by narratology, used in the first stage starts in the theories of Tzvetan Todorov and Gérard Genette. In the second stage texts from both theologians and philosophers (either explicitly or implicitly actualised in the novels) are used in order to broaden and deepen the understanding of the content of the novels: Martin Buber, John Macquarrie, Anders Nygren and St. Teresa of Avila, as well as a theological theoretical framework over impersonal and personal love, inspired by the thought of Vincent Brümmer. A concept of views of life serves as both reference and signpost throughout the analysis.

In conclusion, the concept of creative silence is discussed, as is the issue of how the novels studied include implicit theological thoughts, at the same time as they avoid presenting (ready made) solutions. They insist instead on the reader’s own involvement and acceptance of responsibility in – and critical relation to – existential questions. From this suggestive silence continued theological reflections are initiated. They lead to a possible way of thinking around a functioning view of life today: to live with hope, but without certainty, of a reconciling love as an attitude to life.

Främlingskap och tillhörighet: David Tracys hermeneutiska teologi och pluralitetens utmaningar2004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This present thesis explores the hermeneutical theology of the North American catholic theologian David Tracy and the challenges plurality poses to modern theology. According to Tracy this challenge is to find a way to be open to plurality and the enrichments it brings, but that openness should not degenerate into a repressive tolerance, where anything can be said because nothing is taken seriously.

Tracy thinks that theology should meet this double challenge of plurality by being both critical and self-critical. In different periods of his authorship, he has developed three different configurations of this double critique. The first part of this thesis explores those configurations. The first one deals with the content of theology. Through a double critique Tracy employs an explicitly metaphysical mode of reflection. Later he configures the double critique through a mode of conversation where he focuses the method of theology. In the third configuration, where Tracy is interested in question of form in theology, he explores the fragment as a form for theology. A fragment is both fragmenting and fragmented.

So the investigation into the different configurations of the double critique in the theology of Tracy deals with three different themes in theology: content, method and form. In the second part of the thesis these three themes are discussed and how they can be understood in a theology where self-critique is not seen as an imported but limited phase in theology but as an integral and vital part of theology’s way of existence.

The conclusion of the thesis argues that Christian theology should have a form that is christomorphic in a particular kenotic way. That means that theology should work through forms that are not colonizing the inter-subjectively shared life-world but that actively makes an effort to provide space for the other to form his or her own identity

Skapelsens mysterium, Skapelsens sakrament: Dopteologi i mötet mellan tradition och situation2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis is to investigate theological understandings in conjunction with the baptism of children and to develop such of these understandings as can be seen to be “trovärdiga” (credible or trustworthy) in the contemporary context of Church of Sweden.

The theoretical point of departure is taken in a hermeneutical theological method of correlation between interpretation of “Situation” and interpretation of “Tradition”. A trustworthy theology emerges in a critical and/or constructive encounter between the interpretation of Tradition and the interpretation of Situation. Such an encounter can be established within an area of problematics.

Three problem areas are identified that are present in the Swedish context of baptizing children in Church of Sweden. A) The first problem area concerns the theological interpretation of the relationship between those baptized and those not in a pluralistic society. B) Theological interpretation of “destruction” and what the theological tradition names original sin. How can a trustworthy baptismal theology be developed that takes suffering, oppression, the ecological crisis, seriously in the present situation and at the same time handle or solve the problems related to the theological tradition of original sin? C) How can a trustworthy baptismal theology solve or handle the problems related to a dichotomous construct of the relationship between God and the world?

Four types of material are analyzed: sociological and statistical material, ecumenical theological resources for interpreting baptism, two different orders of baptism at use in Church of Sweden and baptismal liturgies celebrated according to these orders of baptism, and primarily Oriental Orthodox traditions of the Baptism of Jesus.

Several understandings are developed and among them three over-arching concepts found fruitful for solving or handling the problems concerned: the baptismal tradition connected to the Baptism of Jesus interpreted in the light of A Trinitarian Theology of Creation that understands baptism as an expression of The Mystery of Creation, The Sacrament of Creation

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the present thesis is to investigate the importance that paranormal phenomena has for the view of life of contemporary Swedes. It is my impression that science and scientific theories generally influence the person who tries to understand specific phenomena in the world. It is therefore my assumption that a "scientific worldview" constitutes the cultural background for people's interpretation of paranormal phenomena. By "paranormal phenomena" I mean phenomena related to the following fields: Parapsychology, Spiritism, Magic, Folk-traditional beliefs, and Astrology.

Two kinds of materials were collected: A (structured) questionnaire distributed to a representative sample of the Swedish population, and 18 (longer unstructured) interviews. I combined the statistical data and interview material, because, the statistical data provided me with a general picture of the general spreading of the attitudes, while the interview material deepened and qualified the picture.

Most of the Swedes do not believe in paranormal phenomena. However, the results indicate a considerable variation of attitudes toward different phenomena. In the present thesis I state that paranormal phenomena affect three levels of a person's life: the theoretical level, the experience level, and the functional level.

The average Swede values science high. The most remarkable result of the investigation is that there is no correlation between belief in paranormal phenomena and appreciation of science. The respondents who claim to believe in paranormal phenomena express the same high appreciation of science as those who do not believe in such phenomena.

Doktoranden och forskningsmiljön: En empirisk livsåskådningsstudie2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis presents an empirical study of the meeting between a group of doctoral students and their research milieus, understood as a web of values in the social rooms. The purpose is to explore what these research milieus mean for the doctoral students and their questions about views of life.

The theoretical points of departure are on one hand the Uppsala Studies in Faith and Ideologies and on the other the concept of habitus in the study Homo Academicus of Pierre Bourdieu, including the idea that the postgraduate studies can be seen as a secondary socialization.

The study consists of three parts: an observation study, a questionnaire study and a field survey consisting of personal interviews.

    The results are in short:

    1.      Approximately seven of ten doctoral students reflect on questions about views of life every day or every week.

    2.      The milieus of views of life, as interwoven parts of the research milieus, have influence on how the doctoral students think about questions of life. The empirical material shows that there is “a now” and “a then” to these questions. There often appears to be a difference between the cluster of life values in the research milieu and the much more soft values of the students that initiates this process.

    3.      The value process mentioned above that is an important part of the secondary socialization often ends in conformity with those values that are parts of the present paradigm. However the process can also end in such a value conflict that the students (ca 25%) often or very often have reflected on discontinuing their postgraduate studies. The students’ soft values seem to be more important than the values they meet in the research milieu.

    4.      These value questions, including the research ethics and the postulates of the paradigms, have little or no place in the university education. A part of the participants are of the opinion that questions about views of life are taboo in their research milieu.

The results from the empirical study are then confronted first with the theoretical concepts of Pierre Bourdieu, particularly his overly structuralistic view of agents and their habitus, and then with some central moments in the theoretical concept of Anders Jeffner, the prominent figure in Uppsala studies in faiths and ideologies. It is Jeffner’s individualistic view of the autonomous actor with a relative constancy in views of life that is called into question by the empirical results of this study.

God as Problem and Possibility: A Critical Study of Gordon Kaufman's Thought toward a Spacious Theology2003Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The study investigates the American theologian Gordon D. Kaufman’s (born 1925) work, and focuses on the concept of God reflected in his theological method and construction. The examination of Kaufman’s thought implies an inquiry of methodological issues in contemporary academic theology and leads into discussion of central Christian ideas. The principal task underlying the entire study is to analyze the presuppositions, implications, and limits of Kaufman’s theology. His thought is located in a complex field where the methods and objectives of theology are contested issues in tension between what theology has been in the past and the role of it at present as a critical and constructive pursuit in a western context imbued with a Protestant background (chapters 1-2).

Kaufman’s work is divided in two periods, the early and the later Kaufman, exhibiting both common features and significant differences. He is generally described as a liberal and pragmatic theologian guided by the legacy of Immanuel Kant and American pragmatism, but also informed by recent cultural tendencies and current scientific directions. The carefully traced influences (chapters 3–5) converge to make Kaufman suggest theology as primarily an imaginative construction with a holistic ambition to provide a comprehensive conception of the world and to serve human flourishing (chapters 6–7). Kaufman’s proposal of a categorial scheme-constituted by the concepts of God, the human, the world, and Christ-is scrutinized and provides substantial material in relation to which this author discusses alternative ideas, with special regard to the later Kaufman’s understanding of God in impersonal terms (chapters 8–9).

The interpretation of Kaufman’s thought is carried out in a critical mode, and a framework is suggested as an analytical instrument as well as the basis for a constructive proposal toward a spacious theology, which is indicated as a contribution to contemporary theology throughout the study and culminating in the final chapter (10).

Andlighetens ordning: En diskursiv läsning av tidskriften Pilgrim2008Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis takes as its point of departure the question "is there a connection between ordinary Swedish Christianity and the extreme forms of various examples?". As a way of concidering possible connections, a "normal" spiritual context in the Swedish setting is studied: the Christian magazine "Pilgrim. A magazine for spiritual guidance".

The book presents an investigation of the magazine and its notion of spirituality over a period of twelve years (1994-2006). Questions that guide the investigation are: Which are the fundamental notions of spirituality in the magazine? How can someone be spiritual due to the magazine? Which are the bodily norms which are assumed when it comes to gender, sexuality, ethnicity and class? Which connections between the normal and the extreme in contemporary Swedish spirituality can an investigation of Pilgrim as an example of "ordinary" spirituality reveal?

The work is carried out as a discursive reading of Pilgrim with the help of Michel Foucault and his notion of "discourse". Furthermore some of the insights from the feminist discussion on so called "intersectionality" are used to widen the methodological scope. More specifically, the magazine is approached as a single textual surface.

After qualification of the rules of the discourse, they are applied to identify the discursive formation of Pilgrim. By analyzing the strategies which constitute spiritual guidance, the forms of spirituality (subject positions) that the magazine constructs are revealed. The way that social categories - gender, sexuality, ethinicity, class - are characterized in the magazine reinforce heteronormativity, orientalism and a class-structure. Through the magazine social categories function together with other vital categories in a way that the outcome is one and only construction of the ordinary subject: i.e. the western rich man as a spiritual subject.

In conclusion this study suggest that ideas about spiritual growth that flourish in an ordinary Christian cultural and intellectual environment (exemplified by the magazine Pilgrim), like ideas of resistance against the postmodern world and society's superficiality, might have a structure that can be found also in more extreme Christian contexts, and, more importantly, as a part of the problematic of these extreme examples. The extreme resides in the ordinary, and the ordinary resides in the extreme. There seems to be an order of notions, of subjects and of bodies: the Order of Spirituality.

Oreda i skapelsen: Kvinnligt och manligt i Svenska kyrkan under 1920- och 1930-talen2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Creation's Disorder. Femininity and Masculinity in the Church of Sweden during the 1920s and 1930s seeks to call attention to and analyze conceptions of and reasoning about women and men, the female and the male, at play in a broad range of Swedish Church materials from the 1920s and 1930s. The dissertation analyzes how writers in church circles during the inter-war period represented women's and men's qualities and tasks in three arenas: the home, the nation, and the church. It also endeavors to show how these representations were formed in a churchly as well as a broader non-churchly context.

Conceptions of masculinity and femininity combined in an organic understanding of society, in which the institutions of the state, the family, marriage and the church were conceived as God’s order of creation. This theological thinking about order formed a background for the ecclesial critique of what was seen as the period’s social and moral disintegration.  However, the dissertation argues that this ecclesial cultural criticism should not merely be seen as a critique of civilization in general.  Rather, the dissertation has sought to show how a central core of inter-war ecclesial cultural criticism concerned the establishment of boundaries between the feminine and the masculine.  When the masculine and the feminine “were stirred up in the most distasteful way,” this disturbed the order of society and of the church.

The final chapter of the dissertation discusses three questions.  First it reflects upon how one can understand the inter-war period’s ecclesial gender discourse in relation to its surroundings. Second, the analysis of the inter-war period’s ecclesial reasoning about masculinity and femininity has shown that the commentators of this period argued for what were de facto gender-specific interpretations of Christianity. Third, the dissertation has shown that even if a theological conception of order dominated the church texts of the time, it was not all-prevailing.  One also hears in the texts diverse voices that speak for the genders’ similarity and freedom.  Even if these voices had little impact on the church texts of the time, they raise the classic systematic-theological question about how theology is forged in the tension between tradition and context.

    Abstract [en]

The point of departure for this dissertation is the question of how people perceive what it means to be a citizen. In Sweden, voluntary work is a widespread social phenomenon and studying what voluntary work means to people enables the study of an important form of citizenship in contemporary society. The aims of the dissertation are to clarify the meaning of voluntary work and study themes in the view on society and the outlook of mankind emerging from the perspective of voluntary work.

The study consists of interviews with people who do voluntary work within environmental organizations, sports clubs, and welfare organizations.

The interviewees describe voluntary work as being: unpaid, aimed at benefiting others, a free choice, an expression of engagement, and performed in a community. These five themes constitute a departure towards a phenomenological structure of voluntary work. Voluntary work is moreover percieved as a way of gaining an identity, achieving self-realization, and experiencing meaning. These three themes seems to be fundamental functions of voluntary work. When society is described from the perspective of voluntary work, it is perceived as being materialistic and faceless. In contrast, voluntary work seems to offer an arena i a public context for people to act authentically for the good of others.

The interview responses are discussed in relation to the individualization in the modern society. There is no support for the notion of antagonism between individualism and voluntary work. More accurately, they describe voluntary work as a way of standing out as an individual in society. The interview subjects consequently portray the civil society as a free zone in which people can express their citizenship. In summary, voluntary work seems to emerge as a way for people to give shape and form to their citizenship and appear as individuals in a public sphere.

    Abstract [en]

This present thesis explores the meaning of contexts for views of life. The first aim of the investigation is to describe the existential meaningful content of views of life in perceptions of gene technology and in narratives about childlessness, assisted conception and adoption, as they are articulated in two separate sets of interviews. The second aim is to suggest a context sensitive theoretical and methodological development for empirical studies of views of life.

The study uses a functional understanding of views of life and develops the notion of existential meaning as an analytical tool. A differentiation of the concept of context in relation to the study is also made.

The way gene-technology is perceived, reveals different and sometimes ambivalent conceptions of nature, society and of individual health. The existential vulnerability of human beings is exposed when confronted with gene technology and realising this increased the understanding of the diverse perceptions.

The descriptions of childlessness were characterised by meaninglessness and lack of coherence, together with questions of meaning in life. The parents that had gone through in-vitro-fertilisation tried to negotiate the interpretations of the assisted conception to make it a natural process, and recuperate a ‘normal family pattern’. The process of international adoption actualised a ‘pattern of otherness’, which accentuated human dignity, solidarity and repudiation of ethnic discrimination. These two patterns of meaning also reflected different moods during the process.

Throughout the thesis it is argued that historical and cultural contexts, as well as the concrete situation, with its different circumstances and purposes, will affect the content and meaning of views of life.
