Abstract [en]

Using a theoretical approach that takes into consideration the options available to small states in international relations as well as those factors that influence foreign policy decision making, this article tests the usefulness of the approach on a specific case study, the so-called Mosul crisis in northern Iraq in 1924-1925. From the perspective of the alternatives opened to small states in the international arena in the aftermath of World War I and on the basis of Sweden’s stated foreign policy doctrine, Sweden’s actions in the Mosul crisis were understandable and consistent with the basic premises of the suggested theoretical approach.

Abstract [en]

In this chapter the relationship between various levels of registered migrations in Sweden during the 19th century is analyzed. While European emigration in the 19th century was in absolute numbers most likely the largest recorded migratory movement in history, it only represented the tip of the iceberg when all forms of migration are considered. On a national level 718,659 moved into or out of Sweden during the period 1871-1900. Figures on rural to urban migration indicate that a significant amount of migration was occurring in the country. Two studies of small rural parishes reveal that migration figures based on net changes, the most common form of statistic,

fail to pick up most migrations. In the parish of Trosa 1513 moves lie behind a net migration loss for the period 1881-1885. The equivalent figures for another small parish, Upsala-Näs, were

985 moves in relation to a net migration loss of 28. The population of Sweden was certainly on the move. Since migration studies most often deal with categories of people (non-migrants and migrants or various types of migrants), the results often fail to take into account the fact that each migration is an individual act and as such unique in its meaning for a particular individual.
