Abstract [nl]

Abstract [fr]

Abstract [en]

National traditions of thought have been invoked for understanding cross-national differences in scholarly practices. As these assertions remained close to common sense perceptions of nations and their peculiarities, while being at odds with universalist claims about the validity of scientific knowledge, the very idea of national traditions of thought has also been vividly contested. This chapter argues that national intellectual traditions represent a significant issue, but that their precise meaning and analytical significance have yet to be properly assessed. In reconceptualizing the question, different levels of analysis and specific meanings of the concept need to be disentangled so as to arrive at a conceptualization that is both analytically satisfactory and empirically sound.

Abstract [en]

The debate about “global” or “world” social science, however important it is, has suffered from serious shortcomings. Like much of the broader literature on “globalization,” it has been overly general and insufficiently grounded in historical, empirical, and comparative studies. Part of it, furthermore, has been ideologically driven. “Globalization” became a catchword of the neoliberal agenda that has ruled much of the policy-making in the West since the 1980s. But whatever the limitations and biases of the discourses on “globalization,” the term also designates realities that cannot be ignored.

Abstract [en]

Studying long-term processes in human history has over the past decades become a broad and multidisciplinary affair, which draws on various intellectual traditions. The work of sociologist Johan Goudsblom, to whom this special issue is dedicated, was an effort to transgress disciplinary bound-aries and to synthesise different perspectives in this field. In this introduction we distinguish four important scholarly lineages: social evolutionism, Dar-winian theory, historical sociology, and world history with its extensions into environmental history and big history. We characterise in broad outlines each of these traditions and specify how Goudsblom combined parts of them in his own work on long-term social processes, extending in particular the sociol-ogy of Norbert Elias. The final section of this introduction gives a summary overview of the content of this HSR Special Issue.
