A central issue in the reception of Lars von Trier’s films is whether they endorse or challenge a reactionary view of women. The current paper explores the interplay between biblical traditions and conceptions of gender and sexuality in von Trier’s film Nymphomaniac vol I and vol II (2013). In dialogue with the film, this contribution asks what it means to understand sexuality in biblical categories and to what extent sexual categories modify perceptions of tradition. I investigate three aspects of scriptural usage in the film: the Bible as physical artifact, the practices of transmitting oral tradition and engaging in contemplative reading, and the use of two episodes of the Jesus story, the transfiguration and the passion narrative. I conclude that the film both asserts and subverts tradition and stereotypes. Thereby, it manifests the religious complexity that characterizes contemporary Nordic societies, marked both by Lutheran pietism and secularism.

This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts.

Inger Ljung var 1978 den första kvinnan som disputerade i Gamla testamentets exegetik i Sverige. Under närmare 4 decennier var hon verksam vid teologiska fakulteten i Uppsala. I hennes forskningsgärning märks två återkommande teman. Det ena gäller  hermeneutiska grundfrågor. Vad gör vi när vi tolkar texter? Hur kan vi tydligare skilja mellan textens historiska betydelse och dess tillämpning i vår egen tid? Vilka kriterier ska vi använda för att bedöma tolkningar? Det andra rör kvinnors roll i historien och texterna, men också dess implikationer för kvinnor idag, i akademi, kyrka och samhälle. Inger Ljung bidrar till att introducera feministisk exegetik samt till utvecklingen av receptionsforskning i Sverige.

Psalm 51 is introduced with regard to composition, structure and theology. The author then considers how his own contexts (Västerbotten, Congo-Kinshasa, Uppsala) have influenced his reading of the psalm. 

Med avstamp i erfarenheter av att undervisa på kursen Bibeln i samtidskulturen (15 hp), där ett av blocken berör bibelbruk i politiken, illustrerar och diskuterar artikeln pedagogiska perspektiv på temat Bibeln och politiken. Artikeln ger exempel på undervisningsupplägg, såsom hur seminarier kan struktureras samt möjligt undervisningsmaterial. Här lyfts även konkreta exempel på bibelbruk inom politiken från amerikansk, nordisk och svensk kontext samt relevanta teorier utifrån vilka bruket kan analyseras. Författarna menar att temat Bibeln och politiken är både uppskattat bland studenter samt viktigt för den bibelvetenskapliga disciplinen, inte minst för det framväxande receptionskritiska fältet. Temat skapar även möjlighet till samverkan med andra ämnen. Förutom möjligheter framhålls potentiella fallgropar inom undervisningen, såsom att hantera studenters förförståelse avseende både bibeltexter och politisk ideologi eller teologi. Känsliga politiska frågor kan få en särskild laddning i relation till bibeltolkning. Författarna betonar vikten av att skapa och upprätthålla ett respektfullt klimat, men samtidigt våga utmana bibelsyner och tolkningar, särskilt sådana som bidrar till att upprätthålla förtyckande strukturer.
