Biography [eng]

Currently I have two main projects. One involves the documentation of Kholosi, an endangered Indo-Aryan language spoken in Iran. In the other project I am documenting and analysing traditions of mamabies (songs sung to new mothers) among Afro-Baloch and other communities in Iran. Two further projects that are ongoing concern the Dravidian language, Brahui and Indo-Aryan language spoken in Iran, Jadgali.

My research interests thus extend across languages spoken in Iran belonging to three different language families. Given the varieties concerned are highly endangered, documentation has been a priority, but I also investigate language contact, particularly contacts between Iranian and Indo-Aryan and Iranian and Dravidian languages.

In addition, my research focuses on endangered cultures and traditions such as healing and pregnancy traditions, particularly among Afro-Baloch communities.

Abstract [en]

The aim of the present study is to build a digital annotated corpus of oral narrations of the Coastal Balochi dialect. The oral texts that are annotated in this study are of two genres: folktales and biographical tales. The stories that are annotated were recorded during several field trips to Iran. The first section of the book provides an overview of the geographical distribution of Coastal Balochi speakers, situating the Coastal Balochi dialect within the broader Balochi language. This is followed by a brief discussion of the data collected. Of particular note is the fact that the storytellers are typically monolinugal, bilingual or multilingual.

The second section of the book presents six texts that have been interlinearized using the FLEx program. This book forms part of a series dedicated to the publication of oral texts from various Balochi dialects.

Abstract [en]

The aim of the present study is to build a digital annotated corpus of oral narrations of the Koroshi Balochi dialect. The oral texts that are annotated in this study are of two genres: folktales and biographical tales. The stories that are annotated were recorded during several field trips to Iran.

The first part of the book begins an overview of the geographical distribution of Koroshi Balochi speakers, situating the Koroshi Balochi dialect within the broader Balochi language. This is followed by a brief discussion of the data collected. Of particular note is the fact that the storytellers are typically multilingual.

The second section of the book presents four texts that have been interlinearized using the FLEx program. This book forms part of a series dedicated to the publication of oral texts from various Balochi dialects.

Abstract [en]

The aim of the present study is to compile a digitally annotated corpus of oral narratives from the Sistani Balochi dialect. The annotated oral texts are drawn from two genres: folktales and biographical narratives. These stories were recorded during several field trips to Iran.

The first section of the book provides an overview of the geographical distribution of Sistani Balochi speakers, situating the Sistani Balochi dialect within the broader Balochi language. This is followed by a brief discussion of the data collected. Of particular note is the fact that the storytellers are typically bilingual or multilingual.

The second section of the book presents four texts that have been interlinearized using the FLEx program. This book forms part of a series dedicated to the publication of oral texts from various Balochi dialects.

Abstract [en]

The present paper aims to present mamabies as an endangered tradition, in particular among Afro-Baloch communities along the southeastern coast of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The data for this paper was obtained through direct interviews with both Baloch and Afro-Baloch community members, and through audio and video recordings of these traditions in a natural setting. Sixty-five songs have been analysed for this study. The recorded songs were performed by four well-known singers and their choruses in the region. The results suggest that the content and themes of the songs have been strongly affected by the host culture. Some of the songs have nothing to do with the expectant mother and her child, but reflect Baloch history and the experience of slavery. This is the first detailed study of this tradition in Balochi and Iranian oral studies, and is one of the few well-documented cases of songs for new mothers-to-be worldwide.

Abstract [en]

The Balochi minstrel performing art tradition is an endangered genre as it is currently only performed by three professional minstrels called _Pahlawan _along the coast in Rask and Dashtiyari in Sistan and Balochistan, province in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The collection is the outcome of an ongoing project documenting Balochi _Pahlawan_ tradition, in particular oral poems. The project is a collaborative effort between myself and a group of Balochi community members who are involved in designing the collection content as well as collecting and recording data. The deposited data consists of various topics such as legends, religion, love, and history. The data has been recorded in video and audio-only formats.

Abstract [en]

This chapter studies the word order configuration of Kholosi, an Indo-Aryan outlier

spoken in the Southwest of Iran. Kholosi shows considerable influence of Persian

and other western Iranian languages, including phonology and morphology,

but also in syntax: It exhibits regular OV, but predominantly post-posed goals in

a manner that matches that of the neighbouring Iranian languages. Kholosi appears

to have converged more closely with Iranian than other Indo-Aryan outliers

in Iran have (e.g. Jadgali). The Kholosi case illustrates how languages that have

shifted comparatively recently into the Western Asian Transition Zone can adapt

their syntax to match the profile of neighbouring languages.
