Abstract [en]

MOF and two-dimensional (2D) MXene can be potential candidates in the field of water splitting by overcoming the material and field limitations. Here, in this work, a facile approach has been adopted for a synergistic growth of MOF onto MXene sheets to design efficient electrocatalysts. A comparative structural, chemical and morphological analysis has been made between single metallic metal organic frameworks (Mn-MOF and Cu-MOF) and bimetallic frameworks (Cu/Mn-MOF) synthesized via hydrothermal route, as well as directly grown MOF over Nb2CTx MXene sheets (Mn-MOF@MXene, Cu-MOF@MXene and Cu/Mn-MOF@MXene). All the synthesized nanostructures were implemented as working electrodes to test catalytic performances for water splitting applications. The MOF/MXene nanostructures presented enhanced hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) than plain MOFs and MXene. In-situ MOF growth over MXene prevented restacking of 2D sheets with uniform MOF distribution for aiding higher surface area, abundant active sites and conductivity. Electronic modifications due to the presence of two metals and synergy between MOF/MXene morphologies, Cu/Mn-MOF@MXene is proven to be highly stable outstanding bifunctional electrocatalyst. Its superior reaction kinetics, lowest Tafel slopes (HER = 120 mVdec−1, OER = 109 mVdec−1) and overpotentials (ηHER = 180 mV, ηOER = 270 mV) with a reduced full cell working voltage ΔV = 1.96 V to 1.65 V aid in validating its potential for practical fuel cell applications.

Abstract [en]

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have sparked intense interest among the scientific community owing to their extraordinary mechanical, optical, electronic, and thermal properties. In particular, the outstanding electronic and optical properties of 2D materials make them show great application potential in high-performance photodetectors (PDs), which can be applied in many fields such as high-frequency communication, novel biomedical imaging, national security, and so on. Here, the recent research progress of PDs based on 2D materials including graphene, transition metal carbides, transition-metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, and hexagonal boron nitride is comprehensively and systematically reviewed. First, the primary detection mechanism of 2D material-based PDs is introduced. Second, the structure and optical properties of 2D materials, as well as their applications in PDs, are heavily discussed. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of 2D material-based PDs are summarized and prospected. This review will provide a reference for the further application of 2D crystal-based PDs.

Abstract [en]

The past one and half decades have witnessed a tremendous development of graphene electronics, and the key to the success of graphene is its exceptional properties. The lacking of an inherent bandgap endows graphene with excellent electrical properties but considerably limits its applications in light-emitting and high-performance graphene-based devices. Herein, an approach for the direct writing of semiconducting and photoluminescent fluorinated graphene (C4F) patterns on monolayer graphene by an optimized electron-beam-activated fluorination technique is reported. A series of characterization approaches, such as atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy were used to demonstrate the successful preparation of C4F for maskless lithography. Specially, a sharp and strong photoluminescence located at the purple light range of ∼380 nm was observed in C4F, demonstrating a desirable semiconducting nature, and the bandgap was further confirmed by follow-up electrical measurements, where the C4F filed-effect transistor exhibited a p-type semiconductor behavior and significantly enhanced on/off ratio. Therefore, this work provides a novel technique for the fabrication of graphene devices for promising electronic and optoelectronic applications, but also opens a route towards the tailoring and engineering of electronic properties of graphene.

Abstract [en]

Composite materials and their applications constitute a hot field of research nowadays due to the fact that they comprise a combination of the unique properties of each component of which they consist. Very often, they exhibit better performance and properties compared to their combined building blocks. Graphene oxide (GO), as the most widely used derivative of graphene, has attracted widespread attention because of its excellent properties. Abundant oxygen-containing functional groups on GO can provide various reactive sites for chemical modification or functionalization of GO, which in turn can be used to develop novel GO-based composites. This review outlines the most recent advances in the field of novel dyes and pigments encompassing GO as a key ingredient or as an important cofactor. The interactions of graphene with other materials/compounds are highlighted. The special structure and unique properties of GO have a great effect on the performance of fabricated hybrid dyes and pigments by enhancing the color performance of dyes, the anticorrosion properties of pigments, the viscosity and rheology of inks, etc., which further expands the applications of dyes and pigments in dyeing, optical elements, solar-thermal energy storage, sensing, coatings, and microelectronics devices. Finally, challenges in the current development as well as the future prospects of GO-based dyes and pigments are also discussed. This review provides a reference for the further exploration of novel dyes and pigments.

Abstract [en]

Polymer-assisted wet transfer of chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene has achieved great success towards the true potential for large-scale electronic applications, while the lack of an efficient polymer removal method has been regarded as a crucial factor for realizing high carrier mobility in graphene devices. Hereby, we report an efficient and facile method to clean polymer residues on graphene surface by merely employing solvent mixture of isopropanol (IPA) and water (H2O). Raman spectroscopy shows an intact crystal structure of graphene after treatment, and the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates a significant decrease in the C–O and C=O bond signals, which is mainly attributed to the removal of polymer residues and further confirmed by subsequent atomic force microscopy analysis. More importantly, our gated measurements demonstrate that the proposed approach has resulted in a 3-fold increase of the carrier mobility in CVD graphene with the electron mobility close to 10 000 cm2 V−1 S−1, corresponding to an electron mean free path beyond 100 nm. This intrigues the promising application for this novel method in achieving ballistic transport for CVD graphene devices.

Abstract [en]

Graphene is a material with outstanding properties and numerous potential applications in a wide range of research and technology areas, spanning from electronics, energy materials, sensors, and actuators to life-science and many more. However, the insolubility and poor dispersibility of graphene are two major problems hampering its use in certain applications. Tethering mono-, di-, or even poly-saccharides on graphene through click-chemistry is gaining more and more attention as a key modification approach leading to new graphene-based materials (GBM) with improved hydrophilicity and substantial dispersibility in polar solvents, e.g., water. The attachment of (poly)saccharides on graphene further renders the final GBMs biocompatible and could open new routes to novel biomedical and environmental applications. In this review, recent modifications of graphene and other carbon rich materials (CRMs) through click chemistry are reviewed.

Abstract [en]

In this work we report the synthesis of two fluorescent 2-pyrazoline derivatives exhibiting remarkable (fluoro) solvatochromic behavior. The pyrazolines were synthesized in one step from the corresponding monocarbonyl curcuminoids and 4-hydrazinobenzoic acid in high yield and purity and were fully characterized by means of NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy and HRMS spectrometry. The structure of the novel derivative 2was also characterized by means of X-ray crystallography. Both compounds were studied computationally in the gas phase. Additionally, the effects of solvent polarity on the absorption and fluorescence spectra of these derivatives were investigated in a solvent group consisting of various neat molecular solvents exhibiting hydrogen bond donating (HBD), hydrogen bond accepting (HBA), and/or dipolar behavior. The solvent effects observed were quantified and rationalized by employing suitable multiparametric Linear Solvation Energy Relationships (LSERs) involving dipolarity, HBD-acidity and HBA-basicity terms. The contribution of each of these parameters provided insights on the predominant solute-solvent interactions occurring in solution. Importantly, some differences in the (fluoro)solvatochromic aptitude/behavior were revealed among the derivatives and they were rationalized on the basis of their structural diversity.

Abstract [en]

Moiré patterns from two-dimensional (2D) graphene heterostructures assembled via van der Waals interactions have sparked considerable interests in physics with the purpose to tailor the electronic properties of graphene. Here we report for the first time the observation of moiré patterns arising from a bilayer graphone/graphene superlattice produced through direct single-sided hydrogenation of a bilayer graphene on substrate. Compared to pristine graphene, the bilayer superlattice exhibits a rippled surface and two types of moiré patterns are observed: triangular and linear moiré patterns with the periodicities of 11 nm and 8–9 nm, respectively. These moiré patterns are revealed from atomic force microscopy and further confirmed by following fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are also performed and the optimized lattice constants of bilayer superlattice heterostructure are in line with our experimental analysis. These findings show that well-defined triangular and linear periodic potentials can be introduced into the graphene system through the single-sided hydrogenation and also open a route towards the tailoring of electronic properties of graphene by various moiré potentials.
