Abstract [en]

This article presents how a timeline can be used to improve the quality of qualitative and interdisciplinary child studies research with a focus on documents and archives. A particular case, Swedish school sex education from the 1880s until 2022, is used to present and describe the advantages of applying what we refer to as timeline-thinking practices. We, the authors, from two interdisciplinary disciplines, reflect upon our own research process during a four-year project, in which we have interpreted many document sources and actors with the help of timelines. We describe timeline-thinking practices focused on empirical sources and interpretation as a joint, collaborative, time-consuming, creative, and engaging activity. Periodization was used as a starting point, and we explore how year-triggering periodization and concept-triggering periodization actualized varying versions of school sex education. Despite the chronological structure of timelines, they forced us to move back and forth in time, which improved the quality of the joint interpretations and led to truly collaborative work. Hence, the timeline-thinking practices we employed helped us to both identify more connections and handle messiness in a systematic way; they encouraged deep thinking and reflection, and improved the reliability of the interdisciplinary research.

Abstract [en]

A challenge for history education in Sweden involves integrating questions regarding relationships and sex education. The purpose of this article is to explore how students and teachers relate historical narratives about women’s sexuality between the past and present, with a particular focus on students’ discussion of shame. To analyse shame as something beyond the individual, we focus on the interrelationship of gender, sexuality and shame. The study builds on a poststructural understanding of gender, norms, sexuality and subjectification. The data comprise video-recorded classroom observations, focus group interviews with 16–19-year-old students, and interviews with their teachers. The findings are structured into two themes: shame as regulating women’s sexuality, and sexualised shame as a historical continuity. We conclude that it is highly challenging for a history teacher to construe a classroom environment that breaks with traditional historiography without resorting to a fragmentation of history into isolated case studies of the spectacular.

Abstract [en]

Starting in the late nineteenth century, the teaching profession became increasingly feminized. This article examines the results of this process, exploring the working and living conditions of rural female primary school teachers with a focus on the experiences of loneliness, harassment, and violence that they suffered in early twentieth-century Sweden. By investigating the public debate on these issues 1900-1940, we found that two main threats to the well-being of female teachers were identified: isolation and the threat of male violence. Male politicians as well as female authors and teachers acknowledged that female teachers faced loneliness, anxiety, and possible threats from violent men. The consequences of these threats were both emotional and practical, but the debate focused to a large extent on practical solutions such as providing the teachers with telephones, guard dogs, or weapons.
