Abstract [sv]
The aim of PCBaSe is to construct a platform for excellent prostate cancer (Pca) research. The study population are a) 100 000 men in National Prostate Cancer Register (NPCR) of Sweden - with data on tumour characteristics, and treatment and b) a control population of 600 000 men without Pca. By linkages to eg, The Patient Register, The Prescription register, The Cause of Death Register, The LISA database (with data on socioeconomy), and The Multigeneration Register and to some cohorts we obtain an unprecedented longitudinal dataset. PCBaSe will be used for longitudinal studies, ie. on clincial course after diagnosis eg, long-term outcome in Pca in terms of secondary treatments and Pca-specific and overall death, and use and effects of medical treatment for Pca taking comorbidity, heredity, and socioeconomic factors into consideration. In case control studies we study etiologic factors and associations to other diseases, eg diabetes and heart disease, drug use, e.g. anti-inflammatory drugs and statins, and circulating factors in prospectively collected bloods . In 2008 we performed the first linkage in PCBaSe and as a proof of its utility several manuscripts are published or in press. We propose to enlarge and regularly update the linkages in PCBaSe in order to include additional data sources, more recently diagnosed cases, and to have longer follow-up/ exposure time in order to create a platform for excellent prostate cancer research.
