Abstract [sv]
The Ecdysozoa, consisting of the arthropods and their unsegmented relatives the cycloneuralians, are the most abundant clade, living or fossil. However, their origins and early evolution remain unclear, for several reasons. First; their inter-relationships are far from well established; second, their stem-group requires more work to understand major transitions, such as the origin of segmentation and the complex head structure of arthropods; and third, a great deal remains to be learnt about the cycloneuralian worms. this project aims to address these issues by a combination of fossil, developmental and molecular approaches: first, to address the very basal and also the highest members of the arthropod stem group by study and description of new Burgess Shale fossils; second, to continue our work on the morphological and molecular development of the priapulid worms, and to extend it to a new species; and third, by targeted research on the fossil and molecular evidence for the origin of the insects, including a doktorand position. This work is embedded in the context of an international consortium involved in the sequencing of the Priapulus caudatus genome. It thus brings palaeontology into the age of the genome, and aims to marry the two.
