Metallorganic complexes, in the form of spin-transition polymers or biomolecules in contact with metallic surfaces have an immense number of technological applications. It is foreseeable that the on-going demand for smaller devices will unavoidably lead us to single-molecule electronic devices. Spin-crossover phenomena occurring in organometallic molecules hold potential for applications in data storage, optical switches or magnetic detectors, and molecular spintronics devices, to mention a few examples. To be able to adequately develop such technological applications, a microscopic understanding of the complex physical and chemical processes in the material is needed. First-principles theoretical modeling is precisely capable of providing valuable, novel insight on the atomistic level. We propose here a collaborative effort between two groups in Sweden and India, respectively. Both groups have a proven record in first-principles theory of magnetism in organometallic materials, yet focusing thus far on complementary aspects. The Indian group studies spin-crossover phenomena in spin-transition polymers, whereas the Swedish group studies the magnetic properties of biomolecules adsorbed on metallic surfaces. It is the aim of this Swedish Research Link proposal to bring these two groups together, through stimulating the connections between the two groups, which will be done through mutual research visits, scientific collaboration and workshops.
