Title [en]
Symposium American Family 13 december 2010 and Workshop Making Home: Orphanhood and Agency in Contemporary American Novels 14 december 2010
Abstract [sv]
We seek financial support to arrange a one-day interdisciplinary symposium and writing workshop on the topic American Family. The symposium will address issues such as childhood, parenthood, and national family ideologies. The primary objective of the symposium is to create a productive interdisciplinary forum for networking within and across disciplines, and create a larger research environment for the field American Family Studies. Another goal is to map ongoing research in the area. The symposium is linked to the project Making Home: Orphanhood and Agency in Contemporary American Novels, funded by the Swedish Research Council 2009-2011.Invited plenary speakers, both of whom have agreed to participate, are Prof. Marianne Novy, University of Pittsburgh, and Prof. Caroline Levander, Rice University, leading scholars in American Family Studies. Symposium plans include plenary lectures, project presentations and a roundtable discussion. In a writing workshop, Prof. Novy and Prof. Levander will respond to three sections of the Making Home book manuscript. Unlike the symposium, the workshop only involves Novy, Levander, and the Making Home project group. The workshop will be a way for the project group to ensure that the quality of the project meets the highest international standards. In addition, networking with these leading scholars, who are also editors of journals and books, will be conducive to the international dissemination of project results.
