Metalorganic compounds formed by metal centers bridged with organic ligands are of great importance for the development of new molecule-based magnets and organic spintronic materials. Scientific investigations of metalorganics have prominently increased over the last years, in recognition of their immense number of technological applications. Metalorganic semiconductors exhibit for example extremely long spin lifetimes, making them attractive as building blocks for spintronic devices. Self-assembled metalorganic complexes in contact with metallic substrates hold promise for the realization of molecular spintronic devices down to the single-molecule limit. Spin-crossover materials with abrupt phase transition between a low-spin and high-spin state can find applications as temperature sensors, optical switches, as active elements of various types of displays, and in data storage. A further advantage of metalorganics is their modular nature. Through dedicated substitutions of chemical groups the functional material can quickly be optimized using the extensive experience of organic synthetic chemistry to tailor desired functionalities. Yet, there are many fundamental issues to be solved, e.g. why certain metalorganics perform so well and how a microscopic understanding of the complex physical and chemical interactions can be achieved. This topical workshop aims to bring together key scientists, both from experiment and theory, working in this rapidly evolving area.
